iPhone 4 Recall Rumors and What Did Apple Know When?

The iPhone 4’s problems have led to claims Apple will recall it soon. Apple is even planning a press conference tomorrow to discuss the iPhone 4 design and reception flaws.

But will Apple be announcing a recall of the iPhone 4? Maybe, maybe not. A leak from the formerly six-color mothership that hit the Wall Street Journal said there would be no iPhone recall announced tomorrow.

On top of this press conference leak and speculation, it had been reported by Bloomberg that a senior engineer with Apple knew of the iPhone 4 antenna problems but nothing was done about it. Apple has denied this completely.

Apple’s denial of advance knowledge of the iPhone 4’s reception woes are supported by the leak to Wall Street Journal. Apple’s testing process apparently failed to take into account Apple’s attempts to disguise the iPhone 4 in the field.

The iPhone 4 prototype that landed in Gizmodo’s hands had a case around the edges. Other test iPhone 4s had similar covers, preventing engineers from handling a bare phone. Carriers also apparently received fewer test phones than usual and for a shorter time frame.

I said in a comment on an earlier post about this issue that I’d be surprised if there wasn’t a bug report in Apple’s database about this. I may have given Apple too much credit to believe they’d allow engineers to take their test cases off.
