East Stroudsburg High School students share tech knowledge with seniors

By SUSAN JORSTAD April 09, 2012

The eTeam, a group of technology-savvy high school students in East Stroudsburg Area School District, will host the third in a series of hands-on, free technology workshops Tuesday that’s open to the senior population of Monroe County and beyond.

The session will focus on iPhone apps, word processing, using a GPS, a Wii gaming lounge and digital photo album creation.

It will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Technology and Learning Center, behind the J.T. Lambert Intermediate School, off Business Route 209, in East Stroudsburg.

Free parking will be available in front of the J.T. Lambert building; handicap access is available.

Participants are encouraged, but not required, to bring personal technology devices for individualized, specific instruction.

“We were thrilled at our last meeting because we tripled our participants with 35 seniors,” said Brooke Langan, eTeam adviser and district technology specialist.

“We had a lot of people who brought their iPads — 10 women and one man. our kids were so excited — a lot of them don’t have an iPad but they know how to operate it because of the iPods. they showed basic things, like how to access email.”

Attendees also were keen at the last session to learn about the fuss over apps, so the eTeam promised they would make it a topic of one of the workshop sessions Tuesday.

“We’ll go online and find apps relevant to their lives,” Langan said. “That was our goal — to develop differentiated and yet individualized topics for our participants.”

Topics for Tuesday’s workshop include:

  • Apps: What’s All the Fuss?: Learn about smart phones, tablets and more.
  • Word Processing Basics: Need to type a newsletter or a letter with pictures? Learn how to get started.
  • using your GPS: Directionally challenged? this can get you there, no problem!
  • Wii Gaming Lounge: come experience Wii bowling and more on the Nintendo Wii gaming system.
  • Digital Photo Album Creation: as an extension of last month’s session, come learn how to take digital photos and build beautiful keepsakes.

In addition to this workshop, eTeam members will host a final workshop for this school year from 4-7 p.m. May 9.

Because it’s in the evening, the tech night is also an opportunity for parents to come and learn in addition to seniors, Langan said.

“The community tech night in May will include a student showcase of technology projects that were completed in their content area classrooms throughout the year. they use a number of Web tools and programs, such as I-movie and Movie Maker,” Langan said. “It gives people a chance to see what technologies are being used at all grade levels, K to 12.”
