4 Free IPhone Applications You Need to Have

1. AIM – AOL Instant Messenger is still the king of the messaging world, if there is such a thing as a messenger world. And if there is, God help us.

Anyways, if you’re an AIMer, download the free AIM application and stay connected with your buddies wherever you’ve got your phone. You can do pretty much everything you can do on AIM on your phone, and of course it’s completely free. Just remember that with the iPhone’s keyboard, there’s no excuse for typing like you’re using a normal cellphone (BTW JK 45PPL OK?)

2. Remote – Once you’ve installed and set up this iPhone application, you can control your iTunes completely from your iPhone, provided that you’ve got a wireless network for both. This can be really useful if you’re the type of person that likes to fall asleep with music playing, or just listen to music and control it from across the room. Possibly the most practical iPhone application on this list.

3. Pandora – The free online radio service recently became available on the iPhone, so get it and enjoy it, because there might not be a whole lot left for Pandora–rumors are that they’re about to close due to radical new legislation that doubles their licensing fees. However, users of the site know that the service is still a free and simple way to find out about new music. You tell it an artist that you like, and it plays songs similar in style to that, using a classification system called the “music genome” that’s surprisingly accurate and fun. Give good songs a thumbs up and bad songs a thumbs down, and after a few tracks you’re sure to come across something you absolutely love.

4. Eventful – Another iPhone application that’s designed to complement a website. Eventful is a website that displays, well, events. The coolest part is that it uses the iPhone’s tracking system to tell you what’s going on around you, so if you’re out on the town looking for something to do, you’ll never draw a blank again.

These applications are all currently available as of the writing of this article. What’s your favorite free iPhone application?
