Have We Become a Nation of Tech Addicts?

COMMENTARY | The first step toward overcoming an addiction is admitting you have one. That goes for anyone addicted to technology and has an insatiable desire to be constantly dialed in and own the latest innovations and releases on the market.

The world according to Apple and Google

Google announced a Moto X release date of its newest smart phone that the tech gods claim is an Apple iPhone 5 killer.

Obviously, like many planned releases of new gadgets to add to one’s tech arsenal, it piqued the attention of techies and the news of Motorola’s pending release was blasted throughout the Internet.

At that moment, visuals of campers and lookie-loos staking their claim in parking lots outside of telecommunications retailers clouded my brain.

Perhaps, it was an epiphany of sorts, but instantly something became crystal-clear: We have become a nation addicted to technology, at times to the detriment of a social life (texting, uploading photobombs and “checking in” at the neighborhood froyo joint doesn’t count).

Samsung and Apple are enamored in a war of smart phone market share. And some say the Galaxy S4 maker is winning the battle because it responded to our “bigger is better” fixes, much like Nino Brown did in “New Jack City” and Tony Montana did in “Scarface.”

And don’t think for one minute that Apple and Samsung are not exploiting our deeply-seated weakness for something that brings us in contact with our inner savant.

The simple fact is electronics giants are actively exploiting our technology appetites, which makes them, well…tech pushers.

Have smart phones made us dumb and more like zombies?

There used to be a time when travelers pulled a trusty Rand McNally roadmap out the glove box and used it to plan trips over the river and through the woods to grandmother’s house.

They used their noggin to plot gas stations, 7-Elevens for smokes, Waffle House locations, and rest areas along the journey.

Today, with a few swipes on your tablet or smart phone, you can get the same information, oftentimes faster than before.

It’s mindless navigation.

Suddenly, you’ve become like a zombie, void of thought and cognition, although you can still find your way to a popular greasy spoon using a crowd sourcing app.

One big difference is that the route you mapped out using old school ways is likely etched in a portion of your brain responsible for memory. As a consequence, you can likely navigate to grandma’s house without a map, like a boss.

Conversely, with your shiny new tablet or iPhone, you only remember how to access the app using today’s methods.

Think on this: What happens if your iPad device goes bonkers and you didn’t pick up a free map by the register at the Cracker Barrel restaurant 55 miles in your rear-view mirror?

I’d say you’d be stuck upriver in a boat without a paddle.

Perhaps life is one big video game and we’re all trying to level up

Whether it’s playing Super Mario, Pac-Man or the latest Call of Duty installment, players have one thing in mind: leveling up.

From the moment someone cracks open their new video game after camping out for days at a nearby GameStop, they have the end in mind. Making progress from level to level is like a badge of honor or players’ rites of passage.

I’d also argue that owning the game runs second to getting to the next level or playing the final stage.

Undoubtedly, our inherent need for immediate gratification causes us to stand in line for days on end just to land a new iPhone, tablet, game, or pair of Google Glasses.

And then when we’ve had our fill, we roll up our sleeves and prepare to do battle by being among the first to pre-order another piece of tech-istory.

Similar to cocaine, crack, meth, and alcohol addicts, much of today’s culture suffers from some form of technology addiction.

And here’s a sobering thought: There doesn’t appear to be an app cure in sight.

T-Mobile Now Sells iPhone 5 With No Contract

T-Mobile USA on Friday started selling the iPhone 5 smartphone on its mobile network for $99 down or no money down payment plans, according to a new report.

T-Mobile was apparently very happy with the sales of iPhone 5 during its first day of selling the device, according to another report from AllThingsD.

In fact, T-Mobile Chief Marketing Officer Mike Sievert told AllThingsD "Today has been gangbusters for T-Mobile. We experienced lines out the door this morning at nearly all of our almost 3,000 stores nationwide. Clearly they want the iPhone 5, and they are voting with their feet that they want it from T-Mobile."

It’s interesting to note that T-Mobile was the last big wireless carrier to sell the iPhone 5 from Apple, as other major carriers have already done it, including AT&T, Sprint and Verizon. Even smaller prepaid carriers like Cricket and Virgin Mobile USA had joined the bandwagon before T-Mobile.

Meanwhile, I’ve also reported here on Technorati that retail giant Walmart has partnered with Straight Talk Wireless and also offer the iPhone with no contract for $45 per month. You may also want to check out and compare T-Mobile’s new iPhone 5 plan with that of Walmart’s iPhone plan here.

Are consumers going to see more affordable iPhone wireless mobile plans and more affordable Apple products in the very near future? I guess we all just have to wait and see.

Download Free Iphone Games and Movies Today

Did you know it’s possible to download free Iphone games and movies? Most Iphone users are totally in love with their little wonder machine, but it seems that hardly any of them know how to get real value from their Iphone-why not learn today?!

Iphones and Ipods etc are very neat little toys to have, and the Iphone is particularly useful as it has most of the features of the other, but it can also make phone calls and surf the web. That’s all well and good, but downloading stuff from Itunes gets old and expensive pretty soon. Check out these examples of practical alternatives:

Download Free Iphone Games and Movies 1

The most obvious way is the torrent sites. It seems like everyone has a friend who isn’t bothered about breaking the law this way, and so has mountains of music, games and movies that they downloaded. The thing is, it’s getting ever easier for the law to catch up with you for these illegal downloads. Is it really worth going to jail for a one dollar download? What’s more, torrent or P2P sites are a hacker’s playground. They really are a breeding ground for viruses and malware.

Download Free Iphone Games and Movies 2

The other popular way of downloading free Iphone games and movies is through the membership sites. Most people have no idea that sites like this exist. It basically works by you signing up for a membership with them, paying an agreed amount each month ($30-$40), and then you get access to their download catalog. It seems cool, but to be honest I never like to be part of something that I pay for regardless of whether I am using the service or not, and that’s how it works with these guys.

Download Free Iphone Games and Movies 3

The scam sites. These really are not the best way to go. It’s hard to spot these sites, but a good indicator is when you go to a site and find that there is advertising all over the site. There’ll be all kinds of popups and things all trying to get your attention. Sites like this typically work by promising you the earth to get your attention, but then not really giving up anything once you get there. They get paid for the advertising, and that’s why they really go out of their way to get you to see their pop ups etc. As I said, avoid these guys-not the ideal way to download free Iphone games and movies at all.

Download Free Iphone Games and Movies 4

Thankfully with all these sites giving you nothing but garbage, there is an honest way to get your downloads. They seem a lot like the membership sites at first, with one excellent difference-you only pay once. It’s usually something like $35 or $40, and it’s a one off payment. Once you pay, you are given lifetime access to their database, which usually holds millions and millions of downloads for you, whether you are looking for music, movies, games or whatever. These kind of sites are definitely recommended.

As you’ve seen, it’s not as tricky to download free Iphone games and movies as you may think-the only tough part is finding somewhere trustworthy to download from. Hopefully this article has shown you what to look out for.

iPhone App Developers – Secrets About How to Find the Best iPhone App Development Companies

Apple’s over-blown iPhone set off a boom in the telecommunication market, which makes it among the list of most popular cellphone over the past ten years. The slim, large touch screen Bluetooth phone with a two-megapixel built-in camera, along with web browser, phoning and text messaging features, awesome memory space, media player, and so on, makes it well-liked by all. The first letter ‘I’ means the ‘individuality’, as you possibly can change it in accordance with your needs just like an iPod or iGoogle. This was an extra feature which results into a huge demand as well as the boom of the whole market of iPhone App Developers.

Apple offers iPhone app developers a whopping 70% share for developing iPhone applications. More and more people and companies have entered this business to play the odds. With the increasing popularity, it has appealed to customers all the way.

Nowadays numerous Apple iPhone products have already been sold. In the event that a large number of mobile phones have been distributed then you are able to compute the sum of iPhone applications that have been sold virtually every month. Therefore, the race keeps going, to build up the best and most up-to-date iPhone web page or application considering the variety of challengers to beat.

Consequently, the 1st action to remember while employing iPhone designers is they should be aware of the iPhone application industry sufficiently to survive. And they must have the ability to develop apps for Blackberry, Android, Palm, etc. Be sure the iPhone application development company you work with has ever developed applications for iPhones and also have applications for sale on Apple’s App Store. If it is true, then look at screen shots and links as well. Check the way of its presentation of iPhone application ideas. Do they come up with the old boring kind of thoughts or are they ready to accept innovative ideas, prepared to experiment?

In case that the company is technologically robust with competent app developer and specialist, it’s surely a plus point for you.

Additionally, have a look at where the iPhone app developer carries excellence. Find out if they could transplant exactly the same iPhone application to some other platforms such as Palm, BlackBerry, Android, J2ME, and so on. Since this will help to get increasingly more customers.

The developer you choose should be in this field for no less than one year. Since the iPhone is not older than this, it seems sensible that the iPhone app developers need to be professional in this business.

Comparison of the BlackBerry Torch and the iPhone 4

The BlackBerry Torch is one of the latest BlackBerry smartphones which retains BlackBerry’s strength – a QWERTY keyboard and also packs in a capacitive touchscreen display. In this article, I will compare the BlackBerry Torch and the iPhone 4 and show you which is the better phone.

Since its launch in 2007, the iPhone has completely revolutionized the mobile industry. It was the first usable touch screen smartphone and had a really good user interface. It gained scores of fans in the month it launched and in the subsequent months, it went on adding more users.

While RIM was the number one mobile company in the US with the BlackBerry smartphone platform and Nokia was at the top worldwide with the Symbian platform, Apple’s market share exploded with the success of the iPhone, making it the second largest mobile company in the US. Apple will soon cede that position to Android, but both iOS and Android are growing at phenomenal rates, adding about 200,000 new activations each day.

RIM tried to counter the iPhone with the BlackBerry Storm, but it flopped. Then, RIM launched the BlackBerry Torch 9800, a touch screen smartphone with a QWERTY keyboard which slides out. With the Torch, RIM hopes to defeat the iPhone 4 and regain its lost glory. Considering how awesome the iPhone 4 is, it is going to be a tough fight. In this article, I will examine the BlackBerry Torch versus the iPhone 4 based on various aspects like display, hardware, OS, design, connectivity options, and multimedia features.

Design

The iPhone 4 is much slimmer and more compact than the BlackBerry Torch. Most of the bulk on the Torch is due to the presence of a physical QWERTY keypad. While the iPhone 4 has dimensions of 115.2 x 58.6 x 9.3 mm, the BlackBerry Torch is much bulkier at 111 x 62 x 14.6 mm. Weighing 161 gms, it is also heavier than the iPhone 4 which weighs 137 gms. Both phones are easily pocketable though.

Both the iPhone 4 and the BlackBerry Torch have excellent build quality and look very stylish. If you don’t care about any of the other features, you should get a Torch if you want a QWERTY keyboard and an iPhone 4 if you want a normal touch screen phone.

When it comes to the design, there is no clear winner. It’s completely subjective. I, myself, like both a lot. But if you do want a physical keyboard, the BlackBerry Torch is your phone.

Display

While the BlackBerry Torch’s display is much better than that of the Storm, it still cannot compare to the iPhone 4’s retina display. The Torch has a 3.2 inch capacitive touchscreen display with a resolution of 360 x 480 pixels while the iPhone 4 has a 3.5 inch retina display with a resolution of 640 x 960 pixels. The capacitive touch on the iPhone 4 is better than that on the Torch and it also wins in terms of the display size and resolution.

Hardware

The iPhone is powered by a 1 GHz A4 processor and comes with 512 MB RAM while the BlackBerry Torch comes with a 624 MHz processor and 512 MB RAM. Both support multitasking but BlackBerry’s implementation is better. Also, the iPhone 4 comes with 16 GB or 32 GB of internal storage while the Torch comes with 4 GB internal memory and support for up to 32 GB microSD cards. Despite having a slower processor, the BlackBerry Torch is much better at multitasking. There is no clear winner when it comes to hardware, but I suppose the iPhone 4 sneaks it.

OS

The iPhone 4 sports the latest version of the iPhone OS – iOS 4.1. It has an awesome user interface and now also supports multitasking. The best thing about iOS is the number of apps in the App Store. There are now more than 350,000 apps and games available for download. It is easily the best mobile platform.

The BlackBerry Torch runs the new BlackBerry OS 6.0 which is much better than the previous versions, both visually and performance wise. BlackBerry’s App World has only a fraction of the apps found in the App Store though. It you have been a BlackBerry user, you will feel right at home with the new OS.

Solely based on the strength of the App Store and the superb OS performance, the iPhone wins this round.

Camera

Both the iPhone 4 and the BlackBerry Torch have a 5 MP camera with autofocus and LED flash. But the Torch can only shoot VGA videos while the iPhone 4 can shoot 720p videos at 30 FPS. The iPhone 4 also has a secondary video camera with Facetime video calling. While the Torch captures great images, the stills shot by the iPhone 4 are really awesome. With the latest update, the iPhone 4 will also support HDR images.

When it comes to the camera, the iPhone 4 beats the BlackBerry Torch hands down.

Connectivity

Both the iPhone 4 and the BlackBerry Torch offer the basic connectivity options like GPRS, EDGE, 3G HSDPA, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP. Both have a GPS transceiver with A-GPS support. Both have Webkit based browsers, but the iPhone Safari browser is slightly better than the BlackBerry’s default browser. BlackBerry’s e-mail support, on the other hand, is the best among all smartphones. While the BlackBerry has a 1300 mAh battery, the iPhone 4 has a 1420 mAh one. But the BlackBerry Torch still offers much more battery life than the iPhone 4. I would go with the BlackBerry on this one.

The Verdict

Both the Apple iPhone 4 and the BlackBerry Torch are extremely capable smartphones. However, if I had to recommend one, I would go with the iPhone 4. It has a better display, better OS, better camera and offers great hardware. If, however, you want a physical QWERTY keyboard, the BlackBerry Torch is one of the best options you have. It is RIM’s finest phone to date.

How To Trace A Cell Phone Location – Without Them Knowing

Have you ever wanted to trace a cell phone and find out the location of the caller. There are services available that will let you preform discreet searches. The cell phone owner will never know they have been tracked down.

A decent reverse cell phone trace will reveal the callers full name and address, date of birth, address history, and some services will provide any criminal or other very personal records on that person. The first time I used a reverse call search I was pretty shocked at what info was available on me.

One of the benefits of becoming a member of a paid service is that you can request your info to be removed from their system! There are free services but I found them a complete waste of time. Almost all of them share a public info data base that is worthless. You might get back the state or city the call is from.

Joining a paid service is worth the one time fee but I found the best option is to go for the yearly membership. I learned this the hard way by paying a one time search fee thinking I would never need the service again and then having to pay again a month later when I needed to trace down a prank cell phone caller.

Cell phones are a little harder to trace then regular land line phones. The over the counter cell phones that you pre pay and do not have to give out any info on are almost impossible to trace. You can do a preliminary search for free to see if anything is returned. If you get back the city and state you can be sure there is a lot more info available once you join. I even found out my prank callers neighbors.

The information you can now get was once only available to private investigators and law enforcement. But now with a click of your mouse you can have the same access to private information that they do ready to print out for your viewing pleasure.

With more cell phones using a tracking GPS chip you can now almost pinpoint a cell phone location. This is a great service if you want to track your kids, husband or employees. Want to find out where that bimbo your husband has been seeing behind your back? Get her phone number off of his cell phone and do a reverse call search on it. You will know more about her that he does. This could make some really interesting conversation or aid in your divorce.

The service also comes in handy for those pesky telemarketers that think they are untraceable. These days unlisted will not mean untraceable. An unlisted number might not be available to the public but that does not mean you can not trace it with a reverse call look up service. I discover that prank callers think because they are on a cell phone they are safe are pretty shocked when you call them back and rattle off their home and work address along with some other juicy info about them. The prank or unknown calls almost always stop immediately after that.

What to Try when Your iPhone Won't Turn On

When your iPhone suddenly won’t turn on, it hurts on a few levels. First of all, you’re out a phone, which for many people can be disastrous, especially if the iPhone’s your only cell and you don’t have a land line. Secondly, you’ve lost access to your music, which can make a lot of people curl up into the fetal position from Lady GaGa withdrawal.

Luckily, it’s not always the end of the line. Here’s a look at a few things to try if your iPhone won’t turn on.

1. Reboot methods. The first thing to do is try to reboot the iPhone, which you can do by holding the top button and the home button for about ten seconds. In some cases, the iPhone is actually still on, but a bug stops the screen from displaying anything, so you can reverse the problem by doing the reboot. If you still see nothing on the screen, try to plug the iPhone in and again try the reboot methods to see if you can get the screen to display.

2. Restoring the iPhone. If the iPhone shows up in iTunes, but it still doesn’t seem to turn on, it’s definitely a display problem. When rebooting fails, you can restore the iPhone from iTunes, and this should fix whatever bugs caused the original issue. Realize that you’ll have to reload your music if you restore to another software version. To restore, plug the iPhone in, go into iTunes and click the iPhone’s icon on the side of the select screen. Click on the restore button and agree to the prompt asking if you really want to restore the iPhone’s software.

3. Recovery mode. You can put the iPhone into recovery mode if it has a charged battery by holding down the home button before connecting it to iTunes, then continuing to hold the button until iTunes recognizes that the iPhone’s in recovery mode. Recovery mode is a bare-bones way of booting the iPhone that allows you to perform a restore when you’re dealing with a serious issue such as the iPhone failing to turn on or display anything on its screen.

4. Last resort options. If you still can’t get any response from the iPhone, you may have a bad battery or shorted out electronics. This is far from an ideal situation, but if you’ve got a warranty open with Apple, it’s covered. If you don’t, you can send the iPhone away for repair, but it will cost you a bit to replace the damaged components. Stop by an AT&T store and they may be able to give you a loaner phone in the meantime so that you don’t lose your ability to make and receive phone calls until your iPhone is repaired.

Do you know of any other tips to try when an iPhone won’t turn on? Post in our comments section below.

Today at WWDC Apple announced that the new iPhone 4 is scheduled for release on June 24.  Pre-orders for the new phone can be placed beginning June 15.  We’ll be able to get the 16GB version for $199 and the 32GB version for $299.  Meanwhile, iPhone 3GS will drop down to a more affordable $99.

Why buy iPhone 4?  I was curious myself as to how they could possibly make it better but wow, they did!  I did a little research and found that iPhone 4G has what it takes to outsmart all smart phones before it.

 iPhone 4’s Best “Wow!â€Â Factors:

  • Flat as a pancake.  At 9.33 mm thick, it’s 24% thinner than iPhone 3GS
  • Pixeliscious.  Apple’s new “retina displayâ€Â has 4 times as many pixels as the 3GS.
  • Doubles the fun on picture taking with a double camera, front-facing and back facing.  Also has zoom, tap to focus and LED flash.  (iPad doesn’t even have a camera!)
  • Built in video editing with support through iMovie application.
  • Face-to-face phone calls with video calling.  Only available on wifi and only between iPhone 4G users.
  •  Longer battery life: 7 hours of 3G talk time, 6 hours of browsing on 3G or 10 on wifi, 10 hours of video, 40 hours of music, 300 hours of standby.  Nice!
  • E-book application even better.  Sync all of your apple products, buying e-book only once.  Maintains bookmarks, notes and all features across all products.

The iPhone 4 managed to meet all of my expectations, answering the few complaints I’ve had with my 3G version, mainly the camera.  For a little while I’ve been suffering “iPadâ€Â envy, wondering if it was worth it to break down and get one.  The new phone, with all of its capabilities, trumps iPad (it doesn’t even have a camera!) and I now see no need for it.  Apple has literally out done itself with iPhone 4.   Â
