Ten keyboard shortcuts you should know when using the Internet

Keyboard shortcuts can really speed up your browsing online, especially when doing research. Using your mouse to help you search for keywords, go from one page to another, selecting text, copying and pasting, searching for more information and navigating through multiple tabs back and forth can really add up to your available browsing time. Besides, your web browser is perhaps one of the most used applications in your computer, why not take advantage of the most important keyboard shortcuts to save time. Here, you’ll find ten of the most useful keyboard shortcuts when going online.

Ctrl-Tab/Ctrl-W/Ctrl-Shift-T

If you are like most Web users, no doubt you like to have more than one web page open at the same time. To quickly navigate through your different opened tabs, press Ctrl-Tab. If you want to close one of your tabs, use Ctrl-W. However, if you changed your mind and want to bring that page back up, hit Ctrl-Shift-T and the tab you just closed will reappear.

Pg Up – Pg Dn / Home – End

Instead of slowly scrolling down or up a Web page, use the Pg-Up and Pg-Dn keys to quickly browse the page. The Home and End keys are similar to the previous two keys. However, they will bring you to the top and bottom of the page, respectively.

F11

Toolbars and tabs help you navigate the Web. However, if you want to explore a particular page without the clutter, use the F11 key-on the top row of your keyboard-to hide the toolbars and tabs. It’s an excellent way to enjoy an article or simply to concentrate your attention on the page. Hit F11 again to bring back the toolbars and tabs.

Ctrl-F/Ctrl-G

Whenever you need to search for a keyword within a Web page, hit Ctrl-F. This key combination will open a search box for the current page. After you find the first instance of the keyword you are looking for, hit Ctrl-G to locate the next occurrences.

Ctrl-D

Bookmarking is a good way to save pages for later reading or to explore in more detail after finishing your research. Use the Ctrl-D key combination to quickly bookmark a page. A dialog box will pop up asking you to confirm, add to or change the bookmarking information. Do the necessary changes and save the page.

Ctrl-S

Other times, you may want to explore a particular page when offline. To save a page to your hard drive, flash drive or CD, hit Ctrl-S to bring up a dialog window where you can select the directory where you want to save the page to. You can save it as a complete Web page, as an HTML page or some other confituration. Once

Berkeley Test Releases iPhone App to Track Personal Success of Heart Healthy Plant-based Diets that Promote Cardiovascular Fitness

Berkeley, California (PRWEB) July 09, 2013

In 1998, the Nobel Prize for medicine was awarded for discovering the importance of nitric oxide in cardiovascular health and wellness. As the body ages, it begins to lose its ability to make nitric oxide on its own. Plant-based diets, such as the TLC, DASH, Mediterranean, Pritikin, and Ornish Diets, enriched with leafy greens, such as arugula, bok choy, kale, mustard greens, and spinach, can replenish the body’s ability to generate cardio-protective nitric oxide.

To assess whether an individual is capable of generating nitric oxide from a heart-healthy plant-based diet, Berkeley Test provides an inexpensive and easy-to-use disposable saliva test strip for monitoring dietary-derived, total body nitric oxide. In less than a minute, the results from the Berkeley Test strips can now be analyzed on the iPhone Cardio Diet Tracker & Nitric Oxide Food Recorder App. The iPhone App provides immediate and ongoing feedback on which foods elevate nitric oxide so those levels can be sustained to remain energized and fit.

The one-minute test is typically used 1-2 hours after consuming plant-based meals during which time the body transforms inorganic nitrate into cardio-protective, nitric oxide. It is well established through published clinical evaluations that elevated levels of nitric oxide decrease blood pressure in pre-hypertensive individuals.

High blood pressure — the most commonly diagnosed condition in the US — is becoming increasingly resistant to pharmaceutical drugs that lower it. It is estimated that within the next decade a billion-plus people will be hypertensive. One in three Americans already has hypertension, an underlying cause of heart attacks, strokes, and kidney disease. An individual’s heart attack risk doubles with every 20-point increase in the systolic blood pressure. Because of its prevalence, high blood pressure, or hypertension, is the greatest contributor to death worldwide.

With drug-resistant high blood pressure on the rise, there is a renewed interest in preventing hypertension through the beneficial effects of nitric oxide-potent vegetables and leafy greens — the staples of heart-healthy diets. This is particularly critical now that nearly one-third of all people using antihypertensive pharmaceutical drugs will still have high blood pressure and exhibit cardiovascular disease risk factors. In the United States, the percentage of resistance to antihypertensive drugs is lower than worldwide projections; however, elevated blood pressure among a growing number of baby boomers is placing an unnecessary burden on America’s healthcare system.

For many hypertensive individuals, compliance is a critical driver in the prevention of high blood pressure and a daily lifestyle consisting of cardio-protective natural whole food meals is emerging as the best solution. Hypertension can be delayed, if not prevented, by maintaining a daily diet of low sodium and a DASH diet-eating plan enriched with nitric oxide-potent vegetables and leafy greens.

The next step is taking full advantage of this knowledge to reduce cardiovascular risk factors and establish a daily routine of improved eating habits. For example, to follow the DASH diet, 4 to 6 daily servings of vegetables are recommended. For the vast majority of Americans, 2 cups of vegetables is often the upper limit of one’s daily intake and, unfortunately, less than 5 servings per week is typical for a large number of Americans. Sadly, society has moved away from multiple servings per day of vegetables and substituting it with processed box food or supplements to satisfy dietary needs, which are often inadequate in nutritional value and nitric oxide potency.

The inexpensive Berkeley Test strip bundled with the free iPhone app to record and track personal plant-based diets increases the frequency of consuming vegetables and leafy greens. The iPhone App analyzes your recordings demonstrating the healthy-heart benefits that these plant-based foods afford us.

Features of the Cardio Diet Tracker & Nitric Oxide Food Recorder app by Berkeley Test:

  • records Nitric Oxide status throughout the day
  • shows which natural whole plant-based foods increases Nitric Oxide
  • provides feedback as to amount, frequency and mix of natural whole plant-based foods
  • keeps users on heart-healthy plant-based diets, such as Ornish, Mediterranean, TLC, Pritikin & DASH diets
  • tracks your Nitric Oxide status as it rises and falls throughout the day, week, and month, thereby allowing dietary adjustments, and, if interested,
  • shares your cardio diet successes with your Facebook community

Results of focus group members using the Berkeley Test Strip and Cardio Diet tracker app found:

  • more heart healthy vegetables and leafy greens were incorporated into their diet,
  • new ways to add vegetables to their plate,
  • lower systolic pressure when their saliva Nitric Oxide status was elevated,
  • training and race performance enhanced,
  • workouts improved when their Nitric Oxide status was at the level of ‘Target’ and
  • an increase in the number of vegetable servings.

Functions of the cardio diet tracker and Nitric Oxide food recorder app:

  • My NITRIC OXIDE (NO) STATUS – records colorimetric reading from saliva Nitric Oxide Test strip — depleted, low, threshold, target, and high level — at a specific time of the day,
  • MY LOG – summaries NO status in context of the time, type and amount of NO foods eaten during a meal or snack,
  • MY DAY – graphically illustrates your average NO levels for the day, week, and month in context of when tested and in relationship to consumption of a Nitric Oxide potent plant-based food,
  • MY STAT – graphically shows the average NO potency of the food based on the type of foods in relationship to when the Nitric Oxide-rich foods were consumed. My LOG and My STAT includes 30 common vegetable packed with nutritious bioactives, which are ranked and weighted based on Nitric Oxide potency. This allows the app to calculate the relative potency in context of the food and the amount consumed.
  • ALERT, NOTIFICATION, and SHARING – the user will be alerted 2-4 hours after recording their NO status and when a Target-level is achieved, the user will be prompted to share their dietary success with the Facebook friends interested in maintaining a healthy-heart diet.

A recent study (April 15, 2013) conducted by researchers from Queen Mary, University of London and published in Hypertension, an American Heart Association Journal, provides further support of the blood pressure lowering effects of nitrate-rich vegetables. Subjects who drank beetroot juice containing a natural source of inorganic nitrate show an average 10-point decrease in their blood pressure. Sustaining such levels may be critical in maintaining a normal blood pressure. According to the study’s lead author, Dr. Ahluwalia, who reported the following to Medical Xpress: "our hope is that increasing one’s intake of vegetables with a high dietary nitrate content, such as green leafy vegetables or beet root, might be a lifestyle approach that one could easily employ to improve cardiovascular health."

Top Five Free Adult ADHD Apps for the IPhone

Childhood ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is one of the most commonly diagnosed childhood ailments. This condition is characterized by inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. For 60% of these children, these symptoms will continue into adulthood. Therefore, 4% of the adult population or nearly 8 million people suffer from adult ADHD. Sadly, few adults are identified or treated for the disorder (Adult ADHD Guide).

Being an adult with ADHD can be tough. You may suffer from difficulty following directions, remembering information, concentrating, organizing tasks, or completing work within time limits (Adult ADHD Guide). Because the disorder can be so life-limiting, I’ve found it important to develop coping mechanisms. With the advent of technology, the easiest way to manage the disorder has been through apps. Here, I identify the top 5 FREE iPhone apps for managing adult ADHD.

As “iWatch” Is Patented by Apple, a Smart Watch Battle Might Be Heating Up

Since the release of the iPhone 5 and after the passing of former Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, Apple fans around the world have been abuzz about the idea of the iWatch. Nothing more than just an imagined idea, the iWatch has already become a “real” thing to many people who follow the tech world closely. So far, the closest thing to a watch that is produced by Apple has been the iPod Nano (6th Generation) with its different watch faces that you can choose from and also its wristbands that the Apple store has for purchase.

The iWatch is still just an idea conjured up by someone, but as of July 1st, it may soon be becoming a reality. Back on June 3, Apple applied for a patent over the name “iWatch” in Japan, which has since gone public and is quickly coming on the heels of the iOS 7 announcement. What does this mean for Apple and the future of wrist wear? Well, it means that for the first time in a long time, Apple is coming to the party a little late with just a patent for the iWatch.

Apple has come “late” to the technology world before, but not in terms of a product that could redefine a market, such as the iPhone did with touch screen technology. In terms of a watch that can tell you who’s calling, who texted you, when an upcoming event is and what’s happening on social media, Apple will not be first.

Sony first released their original SmartWatch last year to very little fanfare and a large amount of negative feedback. So, they had nowhere else to go but up, right? As of now, Sony has been gaining better feedback and a little more hype thanks to Apple not producing a wearable phone paired accessory. The new SmartWatch 2, which is set to release in September of this year is bigger than the previous model, has better syncing ability thanks to NFC (Near Field Communication) and best of all, it’s waterproof, at least it says it will be.

Sony and Android are clearly laying down a gauntlet of sorts in Apple’s direction, baiting Apple and CEO Tim Cook to make the next move on the iWatch. We can believe that if and when Apple comes out with an iWatch or something like it, it will be with more scrutiny than one can bear. Let’s just hope this all happens sooner, rather than later.

Could This be Childhood OCD?

We must:

1. Locate all the items, which can be a major chore because she plays with them all day. I found the small teddy bear inside the oven in the play kitchen last night

2. Pick up all the items and carry her and the items up the stairs

3. Arrange all items correctly in bed

4. Read 1 book

5. Tell her one story of when I was a little girl and one story about when Daddy was a little boy

6. Give her a kiss in exactly the right spot on the cheek

The problem is, in the morning she doesn’t want to leave these items in the bed. Every single morning, she wants me to carry all of these, plus her blankie, plus her down the stairs. This means that every day these items get scattered all over the house and it’s a nightmare trying to find everything again for bedtime.

Pysch Central, in an article titled, Anxiety and OCD exposed: Seven Signs your Kids need Professional Help, states that signs for children are similar to signs in adults and consist of things like anger, general feeling of being unwell, delayed development, and feeling fatigued. The good news is that my daughter doesn’t really fall into any of these categories. I called my doctor and explained everything to him. He feels that most toddlers exhibit these desires for rituals and although my daughter’s is a little extreme, he doesn’t feel we need to worry about anything. Yet.

As a Mom though, I know I won’t be able to turn off the worrying inside me every time she obsesses over a missing item. My question is, can I really trust the doctor when he says that she’s normal? Are pediatricians today as well versed on OCD as they are autism? Only time will tell.

The IOS 7 Vs Android Face/Off! What a Predicament!

Introduction

Call it clairvoyance or déjà vu, the movie Face/Off is currently being played in a mobile near you. The protagonists Archer and Troy have been replaced by Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android. What does iOS 7 offer? Is it already present in Android? How do they measure up? Questions like these and many more entail answers.

The Great Fight

Since the time Android and iOS became the most and second most popular operating systems, a knockout between them became inevitable. Both dole out a potpourri of features, leaving it to the humble mobile user to decide which one is better. So decide we shall!

Lock screen: this feature seems to be the attention grabber, the very reason that Apple fought a pitched battle with Android using Samsung. Gone is the icon-dotted layout and in its place is a neat, clear screen displaying date, time, swipe instructions and notifications; similar to Android. iPhone users may be shocked at the lack of differentiating factor. Android users can grin from ear to ear! In Android you can customize the lock screen using widget. So that’s another plus point to Android.

Navigation: the single button for navigation that so characterized Apple and iOS is enhanced with slide out functions. This, Apple believes will smoothen navigation within an app, the need to exit a screen to get to another now being eliminated. Android though already has this function, having extended it to Apple users via Google maps.

Multitasking: Scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours! Apple has helped itself to the contextual display that Google has mastered in its various product offerings. iOS 7 tracks your usage of applications to mark the ones you use frequently. iOS 7 allows these apps to run in the background, hoping you might use access them, while the rest are pushed down in priority. This is supposed to save battery usage in eliminating the need to run all apps. These frequently used apps can be accessed in a full screen by swiping horizontally. You can swipe up to close the app.

Android too has been offering this functionality albeit with a vertical swipe of the screen. However, Android just flashes a thumbnail of the app screen with its name and logo. iOS 7, we must agree, has gone a step ahead here.

Receiving Updates: Android has a system to automatically update apps, though the flipside is the slow down in performance when such updates are happening. Apple promises to also provide updates that would automatically install in the hardware but only when the signal is strong. So no more update notifications and awful long time to update.

Sharing Content, the Wireless way: Tired of playing down Android’s easy share functionality, Apple has taken a chill pill and provided something similar. With AirDrop (thankfully no “i” prefix), Apple hopes to catch up, providing its users the ability to hare files, pictures, videos via share sheet in it UI. However, the AirDrop is available only in hardware running iOS 7.

Notifications: the iOS 7 displays notifications even without having to unlock your device. Moreover, these notifications are organized in categories. It’s a welcome change from the previous experience where you could only view the most recent notifications in the locked state. Android had been providing all updates in the order it was received your action.

Who is the Winner?

A high-five to Android for inspiring the latest iOS to draw generously from its in-function features. Apple has realized that some Android features are well received and therefore must be provided to iOS users too, lest they drift into Android territory. Besides, Android has many vendors who also tweak the OS to provide their touch. iOS unfortunately doesn’t have that diversity, cocooned as it is in just one vendor, its parent Apple. It is heartening to note that Apple doesn’t believe in in-house innovation alone to stay relevant but can look over its fence for inspiration.

Given the cut throat competition in smartphone market, it’s heartening to hear Apple mandarins humming “When the going gets tough, the tough gets going!! ” They’ve got to!

Does it Make Sense to Buy iPhone 5 Unlocked?

To be or not to be: that is to buy iPhone 5 unlocked or to just get one from your elected carrier for a seemingly saucy deal. But wait a tick, is your carrier really offering you that great of a bargain in the first place? Before you mistakenly just run out there and buy that phone from your carrier, understand that you are actually paying the full retail price when all is said and done. In fact, you often end up paying far more because you get roped into a two year contract that ties you down to a hefty monthly bill. Under this premonition, it might make sense to buy iPhone 5 unlocked.

Choose Your Carrier

With an unlocked iPhone, you have the freedom to choose the carrier that you desire. For example, Metro PCS – also known as T-Mobile – one of the largest carriers in the world, does not offer iPhones. However, if you buy iPhone 5 unlocked, you can use your iPhone on their network. Likewise, an unlocked phone will allow you the freedom to choose your network and carrier, as opposed to the contract choosing you.

Avoid Lengthy Contracts

Speaking of contracts, just try and get that new phone from any carrier without paying full retail price and while avoiding a two year contract. You can’t because that’s impossible. Carriers mandate a two year contract between user and company because they offer the phones for so cheap that they need to recoup their losses. And pay indeed you do. A two year contract will run you more than $1700 when all is said and done, and that’s excluded taxes and other charges that really add up.

Use Your Phone Overseas

When you buy iPhone 5 unlocked, you also open the doors to your traveling. An unlocked phone is fully compatible with overseas networks, and enables you to simply use pay as you go networks while traveling. Sure, you may have an overseas number while away, but who cares. Your phone is still with you, and that’s where all of your coveted goodies and numbers are stored.

Save Money on Monthly Service Fees

With an unlocked phone, you have more affordable plan options. Prepaid plans, for example, will save you about $20 per month over the alternative contract plans. Add this up over a year and the savings are immense, more than $200. In essence, when you buy iPhone 5 unlocked, it nearly pays for itself during the first six months of ownership.

How to Create the Perfect iPhone App

Ideas

To start the best iPhone application, you have to come up with a good idea. In this event, you will need to make sure that your idea is solid and has at least two out of the five success indicators, which are named above. In this instance, you may come up with several ideas, but choose the ones that will be most beneficial to society.

Proper Tools

Once you have a few good ideas, you will need the tools for success. In this event, this is known as the tool checklist. In this instance, there are a few tools that you must have, and the rest will be optional. Here, you will need to become a member of the Apple iPhone Developer Program. This program should cost around $100. Next, you will need to purchase an iPhone or iPad Touch. Once you have done this, you will have to create and prepare a non-disclosure agreement. The last item you will need in this instance is a spiral bound notebook.

Excellent Skills

Once you have completed your tool checklist, think about the things that you are exceptionally good at doing. In this instance, consider all of the skills that you possess. In this situation, a lot of people decide to create a skills checklist. Here, you should be able to figure out what’s wrong with current iPhone applications, conduct proper market research, endure sitemap creation, complete a GIU design and know a little about programming.

Research

Market research is a major part of creating iPhone applications. Here, you will take a look at applications that are currently in the mainstream and find problems within them. In this instance, you should make a list of the pros and cons of each separate product. Once you reach this step, think about your iPhone applications and determine the problems that it solves, make a note of the programs that are similar to yours and think about the value of your application.

When you are creating apps for the iPhone or iPad Touch, you should know your way around the devices and understand who they operate. When you are designing your applications, think about navigational options, organization features, available information and unique characteristics that are available.

Targeting Users

Now, you can decide who will use your application. This will be known as your target audience. A lot of people consider this factor first, and then come up with reasonable ideas. Here, you will need to decide who your iPhone applications were designed for. Once you have done this, they need to be user-friendly for your target age group or target audience.

Greek Crisis: Is This Real Unity Progress?

What made opposition leader Mr. Antonis Samaras to accept at the last minute the agreement?

Mr. Papandreou, after winning a confidence vote last Friday, proposed a unity government that would lead Greece through the implementation of the new EU package. However, the opposition leader Mr. Antonis Samaras rejected this and asked for snap elections in order for the Greek people to decide, remaining attached to his position until yesterday afternoon when suddenly accepted all the terms of the proposed agreement only if Mr. Papandreou would resign. Several analysts suggest that this revulsion was not the result of creative or patriotic thinking but rather one that occurred under immense pressure from both within and abroad.

Whether or not Greece is entering a new era of unity, serious questions remain unanswered as to the legitimacy of this latest deal and the implications that it may have in the future.
