Native Union Moshi Moshi 03i Bluetooth Handset Review

Dr. Seuss-like product name aside, Native Union’s high-end bluetooth receiver is an essential gadget for those who rely on cell phones as their primary form of communication in the workplace or at home. while the FCC continues to approve flawed cell phone radiation studies, there is compelling evidence in the science world that cell phones do in fact promote brain tumors when used excessively over long periods of time. as a result, I’ve gone on an anti-radiation crusade, rounding up all of the gadgets that remove a cell phone from the side of one’s head. I started with the Yubz Retro Handset, but have now moved into swankier territory: the Native Union Moshi Moshi 03i Bluetooth Handset designed for the iPhone.

The Moshi Moshi 03i is not only a hands-free Bluetooth phone receiver, but it also acts as a docking station for an iPhone. with Bluetooth 2.1 support, this device can pair with up to two devices, which means I was able to connect to my MacBook and use it for Skype calls. Not only that, but the Moshi Moshi 03i is beautifully designed by a peppy frenchman and its name is indubitably fun to say over and over again for hours on end: MoshiMoshiMoshiMoshiMoshiMoshi… how did the Moshi Moshi 03i perform? keep reading on to find out.

Native Union Moshi Moshi 03i Pros

  • Impressive sound quality
  • Stealthy Batman looks
  • Overall performance exceeded expectations

Native Union Moshi Moshi 03i Cons

  • A bit pricey
  • Tailored specifically for the iPhone, though still works with any Bluetooth device

Best For: Relentless cell phone users who don’t want to develop early forms of head cancer; anyone who sits at a desk for long periods of time without a landline.Suggested Retail Price: $149.90.Native Union Moshi Moshi 03i Design

Thank French designer David Turpin for the Moshi Moshi 03i’s sleek glossy slab design. It’s minimalism with a sprinkling of futurism, especially when referencing the symmetrically sound phone receiver. with that preposterous pontification from Modern Art 101 out of the way, the Moshi Moshi 03i ships in gloss black or gloss white and comes with a manual, iPhone 3G/3GS and iPhone 4/4S adapters for the docking station, AC adapter and USB cable. If you use a phone case, just take the adapters out and the phone will slide right into the pin connector. you also have the option of plugging the Moshi Moshi 03i into your computer to charge, or using the AC adapter. I use the AC adapter because the Moshi Moshi 03i just sits on my desk all day. In addition to the Mini USB port, the Moshi Moshi 03i is equipped with a 3.5mm audio jack, which can be used to connect external speakers in order to have the iPhone be your primary jukebox.

Now let’s talk about that sexy receiver. see the dual pin connector on the docking station in the picture above? That’s where the Moshi Moshi 03i phone receiver makes contact with the charging current in order to keep the receiver fueled throughout the day. you can leave the receiver off the “hook” and take it with you into other rooms or out in public, but be sure to charge it overnight. There are three buttons built into the phone receiver: Volume Up, Volume down and the MFB button, which I like to refer to as the “Mother Fluffing Button,” only with a slight variation on word choice. Anywho, the MFB (Multi-Function Button to be official) controls pairing, call acceptance and rejection (when out of docking station) and calling back the last dialed or received number. the volume buttons can even mute a call in addition to adjusting a call’s volume.

The Moshi Moshi 03i is equipped with a few native ringtones that will sound during an incoming call. I have my iPhone set to the Mega Man II Boss Order theme, and look forward to hearing it every time I get a call because it makes me feel like a robot superhero. There was no way to disable the Moshi Moshi 03i’s ringtone entirely, but I was able to lower the volume substantially so that it was inaudible and did not steal any of Mega Man’s thunder. I found pairing to be a snap with my iPhone 4 and MacBook Pro, and the ability to use the Moshi Moshi 03i for Skype calls was worth its weight in minutes. I will say that the minimal button configuration requires frequent trips into the manual, as certain combinations and lengths of presses need to be applied to achieve particular tasks, but once you get moving, you’ll rarely have to alter any of the settings.

Native Union Moshi Moshi 03i Performance

Here is the part where I tell you why I cannot live without a Moshi Moshi 03i as long as I own a cell phone. First off, this Bluetooth handset reduces radiation emission by 95% since the cell phone is not pressed up against the talker’s head, injecting death waves into the brain. secondly, once you pair your phone with the Moshi Moshi 03i and as long as the unit is powered on, you never have to pair it again. as soon as I enter my house, I’m already connected to the Moshi Moshi 03i before I even make it upstairs. So, pairing with this device is beyond fantastic. And thirdly, perhaps my favorite feature of the Moshi Moshi 03i, is the automatic pickup/hang-up. If you get a call and the phone receiver is sitting in the docking station connected to the charging pins, all you have to do is pick the receiver up and the call is active, just like a landline phone. to hang up, simply place the receiver back in the docking station, connecting it to the charging pins, and the call will be ended.

One of the things about landline phones that I miss is the angry hang up in which the phone receiver is violently smashed within the phone cradle for the sole purpose of creating a cacophony of unpleasant sound for the unwilling party on the other end. with cell phones, you can be screaming at someone and then your only option to hang up is to gingerly swipe the screen like you’re sprinkling fairy dust on a hello Kitty cupcake. the Moshi Moshi 03i allows me to slam away, fulfilling my dreams of belligerent phone vengeance till the cows come home.

And then there’s the sound quality, which is impressive. Unless your friend owns a crappy phone with spotty coverage, the Moshi Moshi 03i will offer high quality sound. although I still think that the Native Union POP phone (review coming soon) offers the best sound quality, since it’s plugged directly into the phone, the Moshi Moshi 03i is the best Bluetooth option of its ilk. think of the Moshi Moshi 03i as a wireless landline phone that’s lighter, swankier and has a 30-foot range to boot. you can even keep your phone in your pocket and take the Moshi Moshi 03i with you in public. Wouldn’t that turn a few heads!

Native Union Moshi Moshi 03i Conclusion

I never thought I’d ever feel this way about a cell phone accessory, but the Moshi Moshi 03i officially resides within my “Gadgets I Can’t Live Without” scroll. It’s uncannily easy to use, offers splendid sound quality, works with Skype, is customizable, and allows me to fulfill my angry phone hang up fantasies with an instant connection right out of the docking station. the Moshi Moshi 03i’s only shortcomings are its daunting price tag and exclusive iPhone support, though the accessory does work with Android phones, BlackBerry phones and any other devices that feature Bluetooth connectivity. But you get what you pay for. the Moshi Moshi 03i is a beautifully crafted gadget. even the box resembles a glass display case from the MoMA. I highly recommend the Moshi Moshi 03i if you spend most of your days at a desk and/or are devoid of a landline. this one’s a bonefide winner in my book.

Why? Simply because they’re renewed and increased with all the most up-to-date great features most likely were before empty. these repaired i-phones may have been come back for various motives most likely are nevertheless beneath the brands primary assurance. As an illustration, an Apple iPhone can have by no means been contacted with a customer and would be a qc unit which had been tried and place by several testing on the manufacturing facility.it would be available to be a overhauled Apple iPhone rather than brand new one even though it wasn’t employed.

An AT&T restored i phone may possibly have been the bottom model and as a repaired iphone 4 it is just a fantastic great buy.Frequently the bundle was started out and cannot be distributed as new to ensure the store AT&Testosterone,or Iphone 3gs vendor delivers it back to the manufacturing facility and it’s also repackaged and bought inexpensively frequently with improvements extra. Depending on which i phone you’re going to buy it is possible to sometimes receive a program long term contract that is definitely practically the very first manufacturer’s warranty.

Many renovated items just like the Iphone, or ATT new iphone 4 3G have maintained modest hurt throughout shipping and delivery or possibly the exterior wrapping was split or impaired. these is going to be returned towards manufacturing plant and rebranded and frequently marketed as overhauled iPhones. Most of the damage is rather minor and can’t make sure nonetheless they can be similar in results as new apple iphones and after causing the manufacturing unit for any subsequent time they may be the best quality iPhones in the low price.

iPhone sales forecast for December quarter raised by JP Morgan – iPad/iPhone – Macworld UK

Apple will sell 28 million iPhones in the December 2011 quarter according to analyst Mark Moskowitz of JP Morgan.

Moskowitz said in a note to investors that “Santa’s sleigh needs more room for iPhones”, when revising his company’s estimate for iPhone sales for the holiday quarter from 25.3 million to 28 million, Apple Insider reports.

He said that uptake of the iPhone 4S, as well as the now-discounted iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS, had been stronger than expected in the US. Moskowitz also predicted that the older iPhones would help Apple’s push to penetrate the Chinese market.

Apple’s previous record quarter for iPhone sales was the quarter ending June 2011, when it sold 20.34 million units. Sales dipped in the quarter ending September 2011, with many customers anticipating the launch of the iPhone 4S in October. The quarter ending December 2010 saw iPhone sales of 16.24 million.

In terms of the iPad, JP Morgan revised its December 2011 quarter estimate down from 13.3 million to 13 million, citing better than expected sales of the Amazon Kindle fire in the US. Mac sales would remain steady at 5.4 million units, Moskowitz said.

In fiscal 2012 and fiscal 2013 the company will sell 105.5 million and 121.7 million iPhones respectively, according to JP Morgan’s revised estimates.

The tough phone dunk test

Motorola Defy+ versus Sony Ericsson Xperia Active

AN UNDERWATER TXT: Both phones happily survived being submerged during multiple takes (unfortunately, being a family-friendly publication, NBR can't post the one in which dunking technician @CWoodfieldNBR utters the immortal "it's not responding to my finger!" Although sometimes slower, both handsets still work with a soaked screen). While both can survive up to 1m underwater, a disclaimer with the Active notes that claim applies to fresh water – good if you get caught in the rain; less so if you're strolling the surf or get splashed around a pool. nevertheless, the Active survived repeated dousings in chlorinated Auckland tap water. (Click icon bottom right of video to watch it full screen.)

Both made calls fine immediately after a dunking. And in the clip above, the Defy+ sends the Active an underwater txt. the Defy+ also successfully received a txt while submerged.

THE WINNER:  It's a tie. the cheaper Active, with its double cover and more rugged-feeling caps over vulneable points (the USB and headphone jacks) feels like it could handle more rough and tumble. And it's hole for a lanyard or wriststrap is a simple but useful (and rare) design feature. but its 3-inch display is very much the minimum for a touchscreen; the Defy+ 3.7-inch display is more practical for typing, txting and everday tasks.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Active

HOT: Can survive for 30 minutes 1m under fresh water, scratch-proof, dust-proof, double back cover NOT: 3-inch screen is absolute minimum for a touchscreen; typing can be tricky, chunky TECH SPECS: 3-inch, 320×480 display, 1GHz processor, 512MB onboard memory, A-GPS, wi-fi, Bluetooth, micro-USB, 5 megapixel/720p HD video rear camera; front camera, Android 2.3, 92 x 55 x 16.5mm, 110.8g. Full tech specs. NETWORK: Telecom PRICE: $399 off-contract

Motorola Defy+

HOT: Big screen, water and dust resistant, scratch-proof, water resistant to 1m, NOT: Chunky TECH SPECS: 3.7-inch, 854×480 display, 1GHz processor, Android 2.3, A-GPS, wi-fi, 5 megapixel camera, microUSB, Bluetooth, 2GB of onboard memory (expandable to 32GB), 107  x 59 x 13.4mm, 118g. Full tech specs. PRICE: $749 off contract NETWORK: 2degees (Vodafone compatible; Telecom sells a near-identical model called the Defy, without the +)

Smartphones are famously fragile, and vulnerable. Get caught in a rain shower, or take it to the beach, and your flash new Android or iPhone could get water-logged, or sand-clogged and stop working.

Sony’s Xperia Active and Motorola Defy+ both claim to be rugged phones. Both are waterproof to 1m, dust-proof and scratch-proof.

Limits There are limits to their toughness. neither is rated drop resistant (unlike the Sonim XP3 tested a while back by NBR, which will lacking any smartphone smarts, survived a 2m fall, coffee dunking, being hurled into the surf and exposure to swine flu).

And water and dust-resistance depends on your ability to remember to kept rubberised covers for earphone and USB jacks clipped in place (on both models, they stayed in place over a couple of weeks of NBR testing, but NBR is dubious they could last a couple of years). another catch: water means fresh water, not corrosive salt water, or chlorinated pool water.

Still, if you’re walking at the edge of the surf, or trying to txt-2-park when the heavens open, either one of these phones will happily keep functioning.

the more cheaper Xperia Active has a double-back cover design that feels more sturdy than the Defy+’s more traditional single cover. however, the Defy+’s 3.7-inch touchscreen makes it the more usable phone. the Xperia’s 3-inch display (for point of reference, an iPhone 4 is 3.5-inch) is close to the minimum usable size for a touchscreen. If you’ve got big hands, you could find typing tricky.

If you work in a rough-and-tumble work environment, you’ll appreciate a simple but useful design feature on the Xperia Active – a hole through which you can hook a wrist strap or neck lanyard (supplied in the box).

As with all Motorola and Sony Ericsson Android handsets, both the Defy+ and the Active have custom software overlaid over Google's basic software. This either jazzes things up and makes it easier to juggle multiple social media contacts or makes for an overly fussy interface, depending on your point of view (personally I prefer plain vanilla Android).

And as with most Motorola handsets, the Defy+ requires you to sign up to its online MotoBlur service before you can use it (MotoBlur lets you backup your contacts online, plus other frills). the compulsory nature of MotoBlur irks some people. in this case, there was also a chicken-and-egg problem. I couldn't activate the 2degrees SIM (for voice and data) that came with the Defy+ until I called 2degrees, but before I could place that call, I had to enable MotoBlur – while still without a cellular data connection (the answer: find wi-fi).

Aside from the tininess of the Active’s screen, and both handsets' chunkiness (the Defy+ is roughly twice as thick as an iPhone; the Active a third ) there’s no real compromise on form or features – a notable change from rugged phones of old.

PERSPECTIVE: the Active (left) and the Defy+ (centre)  next to an iPhone 4. Although shorter and narrower, both phones are markedly chunker than an iPhone 4; the Defy+ is about twice as thick; the Active about a third as thick again.

VUNLERABILITES: the Xperia's caps over its speaker and USB jacks (above) seem more rugged than the Defy+'s more thinly attached jack cover (below).

The iPhone’s untallied success: Pre-paid and gray market

The iPhone 4S is being hailed by pretty much everyone as a success these days, including a veritable pile-on of analysts chiming in to anticipate a fourth-quarter rise in sales for the shiny new device. But Apple is also making gains in a less brightly lit area of smartphone sales: The world of gray market devices with pre-paid service.

A Mission Local story on Thursday describes this as a key growth area for the iPhone that doesn’t often get the attention of launches on major new networks such as Verizon. it mentions H20, a small regional MVNO that uses AT&T’s 3G network and also offers monthly service at rates 5o percent below what the iPhone’s authorized carriers can promise, including cheap international calling, which is a winning deal for immigrant populations. H20, and others of its ilk, are seeing new customers sign on for its contract-free, prepaid service at a remarkable rate. at one general wireless and computing store in San Francisco, sign-ups for the small carrier had exceeded 10 per day, according to the store clerk.

Small carriers and MVNOs come with significant downsides: Service could be cut off if technology changes or contracts with carriers they rent tower usage from ends, and customer service can be positively atrocious. plus, with H20 at least, there’s no way to send multi-media messages (image, voice, audio or contacts). But with monthly charges at half what you’d expect to pay on one of the big three for comparable services, it’s a trade-off many appear willing to make.

There’s also the benefit of being able to bring your own hardware, too. People can get iPhones for much cheaper than the going rate for unlocked devices on Apple’s site, either used or through less-than-legal sources, and carriers like H20 have no qualms about working with local shops that perform unlocking services to get them set up. even if they end up paying a little more upfront for an unlocked iPhone, they save big on cheaper monthly fees. even on larger networks, like T-Mobile’s, the practice of bringing unlocked iPhones to a network that can’t even fully support them has a lot of appeal, or at least that’s what 1 million users seem to suggest.

In China, the gray market is huge for the iPhone and other Apple products. for instance, half the iPads sold in the country as of October were from unauthorized sources, according to a report from Analysys International. The iPhone 4S also sparked a lot of gray market demand. when it went on sale in Hong Kong, stores were swamped with shoppers intending to resell devices, and the price soon after its launch in the U.S. was in the $2,000 U.S. range in Chinese electronics markets.

Getting its iPhone into the hands of as many customers as possible is good for Apple, even if it doesn’t necessarily happen through legitimate channels. Trends like those listed above, where users are jumping onboard the iPhone train through any means possible, eventually mean Apple will have more potential customers for its media stores. The broader potential audience can also be influenced by Apple’s halo effect, through which iOS device owners tend to buy more Macs and other Apple products.

Apple doesn’t appear to be doing much to combat its gray market success; in fact, if anything, it has taken steps to encourage off-contract business in recent years, by selling factory unlocked devices directly through its own store. These are much easier to resell on eBay or in other second-hand markets, thereby fuelling opportunities for pre-paid users. That, and the continued availability of cheaper devices like the iPhone 3GS, stand to benefit Apple more in the long run than it would appear at first glance, since they can stick around and encourage Apple’s pre-paid growth, even after their original owners are done with them.

NPD: iPhone 3GS Outsold Every Android Smartphone in Q3

Apple’s iPhone 4 was the top selling phone in the world for its entire reign at the top of Apple’s iPhone product line, but according to market research firm NPD, even Apple’s iPhone 3GS outsold every Android smartphone on the market.

In a release, the company said that the top five phones of the third quarter, which ended in September, were:

  1. Apple iPhone 4
  2. Apple iPhone 3GS
  3. HTC EVO 4G
  4. Motorola Droid 3
  5. Samsung Intensity II

In other words, Apple’s iPhone 4, which was more than a year old during the quarter, was the #1 phone during the quarter, while Apple’s 25 month-old iPhone 3GS was also enough to beat every single one of the latest and greatest Android device, including all of the 4G LTE devices that had been released in the previous six months.

These results demonstrate both the strength and weakness of Apple’s business model of offering a very limited number of models that are differentiated only by how much storage they have. during the 3rd quarter, Apple offered the iPhone 3GS and the iPhone 4 in two colors with three different storage sizes each. so, while Apple has the #2 smartphone platform, it has the #1 and #2 devices.

Compare that to Samsung, which sells Android and Windows Phone smartphones. a quick look on Samsung’s “Phone” landing page asks customers to browse by carrier, not by device. The more adventuresome can view all 136 models Samsung makes (that includes feature phones as well as smartphones). In some cases, even when Samsung sells the same device on more than one carrier, they have different features and even different form factors.

From Samsung’s Phone Page, “View All 136”

But all those models add up. Apple may have had the top two devices during the quarter, but Samsung was the #1 mobile device maker during the quarter, just like Android has been the #1 smartphone platform for much of the last year.

Then again, Apple takes a monstrous portion of the entire cell phone industry’s profits. This not only relates to the fact that Apple commands a much higher premium for its iPhone devices, it also makes a higher profit per device because of its highly concentrated product line.

During the November quarter, Apple will be offering three iPhone models, the iPhone 4S, the iPhone 4, and the going-on-three-years old iPhone 3GS, which will be free with a two year contract at AT&T. we would expect that lineup to result in Apple claiming the top three spots in rankings such as NPD’s.

The image below is a comparison to Apple’s and Samsung’s mobile product lines (limited to the first of nine pages of Samsung phones).

iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS vs. an Alphabet Soup of Smartphones

As we have repeatedly noted, there are many metrics with which to pass some kind of arbitrary judgement on who is beating whom in the smartphone market, but the reality is that Apple is playing a different game than OEMs like Samsung, HTC, and Motorola Mobility. The company’s goals are also far, far different from Google’s when it comes to that company’s Android platform.
