Making an Informed and Emotional Smartphone Purchase

Now that I’m working again I wanted a good smartphone. But how to choose? I read many articles comparing flagship phone (Galaxy S4, HTC One, iPhone 5, Xperia Z) features.

* benchmark tests

* storage capacity

* camera pixels

* plastic vs. metal

* removable or non-removable batteries

* stock Android or tweaked display

I used to work for Sony Ericsson and once had their Xperia smartphone. I wanted something different. My son has an iPhone; a good phone but I wanted a path less worn. I managed to find a Galaxy S4 at Wal-Mart before it was advertised by getting friendly with a sales person. Did the same with an HTC One. Actually holding the devices in my hand compared to reading about them was like the difference between the map and the place on it. No, I couldn’t tell everything by brief inspection, but now I put a face with a name and engaged the senses always left out of a blind date..

Neither phone is cheap. The S4 was about $70 more expensive than the One. AT&T and Verizon seemed to be the premiere carriers but when I checked prices for the data plan I would need they became carriers of typhoid excess. Sprint ratted me to the credit bureau years back for a mistake they made, not me. So they were out. T-Mobile won by default (but they all leave something to be desired).

I stopped by several T-Mobile stores but none had the HTC One or Galaxy S4 at the time. They said they could order it online. I could do that myself, and did. After having held the devices and simmering for several weeks in the facts as reported by those with and without axes to grind, I made a decision in accordance with the feelings running fastest downstream and ordered an HTC One for overnight delivery.

The phone’s arrival made the next day Christmas day. I opened it on the front porch and had it working in a few minutes. The Blinkfeed function replaces the stock Android screen with news features of your choice (I chose science and technology, NFL and Associated Press). I didn’t think I would like this because I don’t generally follow news. But I didn’t have the prejudice of a stock Android user and I found many articles to be interesting and often enlightening. Also, speakers on a phone carried no weight with me until I heard those on the HTC One. After listening to a couple songs and taking a few calls on speaker, I’m hooked.

I started out with an attitude that Mr. Spock would have approved only to make a Dr. McCoy decision. Not only do I not regret it, I like it.

7 Must-Have iPhone Games

1. Doodle Jump

Once the king of the App Store, Doodle Jump is the perfect example of a classic iPhone game. The idea of the game is simple enough: control your character by tilting the iPhone to jump up on platforms and reach as high up as you can. It’s been notoriously known for its freakishly addictive property. Be warned when you get this app: you will be playing it for hours at a time.

2. Angry Birds

Yet another classic, Angry Birds is currently #1 in the App Store. Nobody can explain why flinging birds at pigs from a catapult is entertaining, yet if you see someone playing intently on an iPhone in a bus or at a subway, there’s a 90% chance it’s Angry Birds. Consider your iPhone naked until you own this game.

3. NOVA

In short, NOVA is the best sci-fi first person shooter app in the App Store. Boasting the best graphics of mobile gaming, an epic campaign that takes hours to beat, and a large multiplayer community, it has lived up to all the expectations of Gameloft games. If you love this app, don’t forget to check out NOVA 2.

4. Peggle

Anyone who hasn’t heard of Peggle has been living under a rock in Mars for the past few years. Loaded with countless levels of style and seamless graphics, this original game allows the player to harness physics to achieve his goal. Two words: get it.

5. Pocket God

It’s hard to explain what Pocket God is. In short, Pocket God is an entertainment app that allows you to become the god of your own island, complete with interactive weather, people, and more. With each episode comes a new feature that the player can do, from harpooning your men and erupting volcanoes to making a tornado and flinging them off the island. Sounds cruel? Catch fish for them or let them play around. YOU decide.

6. Zenonia

For anyone interested in RPG, Zenonia is the game for you. It’s considered the benchmark for most, if not all, RPGs. With 5 character classes and a storyline that will take nearly 40 hours to complete, Zenonia has surprising replay value and will tempt you to play through it multiple times.

7. Real Racing

Finally, what gaming pack is complete without a good racing game? Real Racing delivers that with astounding graphics, challenging AI and perfect controls. You can truly feel the rush of racing with this near perfect racing game.

The Process of Buying a Contract Phone

If we’ve been on pay as you go for a long time, it may be confusing when we begin looking at contract phones. This article will look at the full process, from choosing a place to get your phone through understanding your user profile in order to get the right blended contract.

Choosing telephone models

One of the first things you need to do of course is to choose the telephone models that you are interested in. There are so many different types of phone out there on the market, and they range in price from just £15 all the way up to £600 and more. Indeed, it is important to get something that you really like, but also fits your budget. It tends to be the case that you can get contracts from as low as £7.50 per month on cheaper phones. However, if you’re looking to get a Samsung Galaxy S4, an iPhone 5, a Sony Xperia Z or an HTC One, then you’re going to have to fork out upwards of £30 per month. Some people consider getting telephone models that are last year’s flagship phone. For example, the iPhone 4S has been superseded by the iPhone 5 but is still a very good phone.

Five Great Free Productivity Apps for IPhone

Among the many benefits of owning an iPhone 5 is the ability to have a hundreds of apps at your fingertips to improve the quality of your personal and professional life. Productivity apps are useful in every sphere of your daily routine, from grocery shopping to exercising, working on a project to cleaning your home. But which free productivity apps are worth a download?

30/30 (Binary Hammer)

The App Store is filled to the brim with task managers and timers, so an app needs to do a lot to stand out. Not only should its user interface be simple and intuitive but it needs to be attractive without being too distracting so the user can easily focus on the tasks at hand. 30/30 by Binary Hammer meets all these requirements and exceeds them. Its minimalistic interface ticks down the seconds until the next task, with buttons at the three o’clock and nine o’clock positions to add or subtract time in ten second or one minute increments. Every task you add can be color-coded, changing the entire background of the interface as a reminder of what task you’re working on now. Switch between a huge selection of alert sounds to let you know when a new task has begun or a previous task has ended. Unlike most timers and task managers on the iPhone 5, 30/30 isn’t dry and over-laden with unnecessary settings. It’s clean, graphically beautiful, and a must download to keep yourself focused and on time.

Evernote (Evernote)

The iPhone’s pre-loaded Notes app is simple but bland, and with a number of possible free alternatives available it’s an easy decision to download a replacement. But which alternative should you choose? Evernote provides a plethora of options for note-taking, scheduling, and task management. Write down an idea, take a picture and then mark your location, all in one clean note that is searchable. If you’re the sort who prefers to make your own audio notes, Evernote’s got it sorted. Record your note, tag it, and it becomes searchable, too. Compile your notes, lists and pictures into separate notebooks to ease your organization and streamline productivity. You can also sync the notes on your iPhone 5 with other devices to make them accessible wherever you are. If you have the spare cash you can upgrade and take advantage of premium features like a PIN to keep your notes secure, but the free version of Evernote is so multi-functional that it’s definitely not necessary.

Weave (Intuit, Inc.)

Now you’ve downloaded 30/30 to time and manage your tasks and Evernote to organize your thoughts and ideas. Your iPhone 5 productivity suite is filling out nicely. It’s time to get a project going. But what if you need to collaborate with colleagues, or plan a trip with friends, or divvy up housework with family? Weave has everything you need. Weave is a collaboration app that let’s you share task lists and plans with a group of people to stay organized and synchronized. Have a project due in a week for class? No problem. Use Weave with your classmates to assign duties, mark due dates, and make sure your project is turned in on time. You can track your own progress and that of your collaborators to see how much work you have left to do. Prioritize your tasks so everyone knows what needs to be done first and keep a record of how long each task takes so you can finish it even more efficiently next time.

Dropbox (Dropbox)

Of all the free productivity apps available in the App Store, Dropbox may very well be the best. For years, businesspeople, creatives, and your regular Joe Public had to email themselves documents, videos, and pictures in order to access them on different devices. The flash drive revolution made it easier to carry content around but in the age of the iPhone 5, the fewer objects between us and our content, the better. Dropbox uploads your files to its website so you can access them anywhere you go, from any device. Download the app for free on your iPhone and iPad and download and install the application on your laptop or desktop. Move the desired file into Dropbox and bam, you can access and modify it through the Dropbox service from any connected device. If worst comes to worst and all of your devices somehow suffer complete system failure, you can still see and modify your files from Dropbox’s website. Think of it as a free backup service. Every free user is given two gigabytes of storage space to use in whatever way they like. Upgrading to premium services is always an option, but for most people, cycling in and out of that two gigabytes should be more than enough for your work documents or a few hundred vacation photos.

Any.DO (Any.DO)

Many productivity apps either feature or center around the concept of making lists. Lists keep you organized and provide achievable goals that make you feel like you’ve accomplished something with your day. The best checklist app of them all is Any.DO, absolutely free for the iPhone 5. Unlike many other checklist apps (for example, the overly simplistic and costly $1.99 app Clear by Realmac Software), Any.DO offers a bevy of functions. Its voice-recognition support makes it hands-free — simply say what you want to do and the time, and Any.DO converts your words into text. It has a calendar function to look at your future and past plans and, like the best iPhone apps, takes full advantage of gestures and shaking, allowing you to swipe off and mark something as done and then shake away all of your completed tasks. Perhaps the greatest aspect of Any.DO is exactly what iPhone users want in an app apart from function — beautiful form. The gorgeous, sleek user interface is a perfect hyper-modern addition to your app collection.

Apple is Monotheistic, Android is Polytheistic

On June 23rd, 2010, Google/Android, Verizon, and Adobe release two new incarnations of their best-selling smartphone, the Droid. Smartphone aficionados will be able to select from the Droid X or Droid 2. That begs the question, “whats the diff?”

The Droid 2 is essentially a better Droid. Equipped with a faster processor (750mHz), a better keyboard, and the same size screen, the Droid 2 represents what the Droid probably should have been.

The Droid X is the future of the Droid line. “X” comes with the 1-GHz processor, a larger 854 x 480 resolution touchscreen, and HDMI port, an 8 megapixel camera, 8GB of internal storage, and Android 2.1. Droid X also records 720p HD video.

That being said, in the near future (July or August 2010) a new Droid will step out of the shadows. The version is aptly named the Droid “Shadow.”

On June 24th, 2010, Apple and AT&T releases, finally, the iPhone 4. In my opinion, if the iPhone shipped with your choice of creamy filling, people would still camp-out at their friendly neighborhood AT&T store.

Apple iPhone 4 ships with the best screen ever on an Apple iPhone, 3.5″ screen with 960×640 resolution, HD video recording, a 5MP camera, video calling, and perhaps the coolest feature of any phone, a gyroscope. The gyroscope gives the iPhone the ability to detect both gravity and motion. Expect some seriously cool apps centered around this capability.

And somehow, everyone is forgetting about the gorilla in the room, RIM’s Blackberry, which owns about 42% of the smartphone market.

On various message boards the vitriol between Apple fanpeople and anti-Apple fanpeople is yet again reaching fever-pitch. Such polarized arenas remind me of difference in religions, antagonism between monotheists and polytheists.

If Apple is God, Jobs is Christ (or at least Abraham), the prophet and voice of Apple. Apple prefers no devices other than its own. Motorola, LG, HTC, and Samsung are false smartphones, pretending to be the one true iPhone.

Apple fanpeople are devout and true to the one true iPhone. One will rarely see an iPhone user backslide to another false smartphone. Notice that when backsliding occurs that person sees their societal position slide, too. Now, they have to sit at another table at lunch, “with those other users,” or, they in sullen silence while iPhone users worship their iPhones.

Apple requires special rituals when using their iPhone. Users that want to advance their iPhone experience must also have an iPad or Mac, must apply to be part of the develop’s group, and must submit their homage/app to the upper echelons at Apple.

Android, on the other hand, allows people to develop at will. Downloading the Android SDK is free. Apps then run on any platform supporting Android, such as Motorola, HTC, LG, or Nexus.

Even Apple has their Judas. AT&T promised to support, encourage, and stand-by Apple and the iPhone. When the pre-order day arrived, however, AT&T was not ready to handle the new Gospel According to Steve. Much disappointment was had by all the fervent followers of Steve and Apple. According to news reports followers persevered and anxiously await the fourth coming of the iPhone.

Are you the monotheist/Apple smartphone user; or, are you the polytheist/Android smartphone user?

This week, you will have the opportunity to decide.

PCWORLD, PCWORLD, digital trends.

Please Do Not Destroy This Country

I see hope in the OWS movement. So long it remains peaceful it will serve its objective of educating the mass in the power of democracy. We need to keep our vigil. Powerful enemies of people are skimming to discredit this movement. Slightest provocation can create violent situations, and once that happens this movement will suffer.

A prominent Washington lobbying firm that has links to the financial industry has proposed an $850,000 plan to take on Occupy Wall Street and politicians who express sympathy for the OWS. The proposal was written on the letterhead of the lobbying firm Clark Lytle Geduldig & Cranford, and it was addressed to one of CLGC’s clients, the American Bankers Association.

The memo proposes that the ABA pays CLGC $850,000 to conduct “opposition research” on Occupy Wall Street so that “negative narratives” about the protests and allied politicians can be constructed. The memo also affirms that Democratic victories in the next election would severely harm the cause of Wall Street, and suggests this can only be averted by electing Republicans.

Two of the memo’s authors, partners Sam Geduldig and Jay Cranford, had worked for House Speaker John Boehner, before he became speaker. Cranford joined the firm this year after serving the speaker as his assistant for policy. Jeff Sigmund, an ABA spokesperson had confirmed that the association received the memo from CLGC.

The lobbying firms are extremely powerful, since the US Congress is the best government money can buy. Our hope lies with the OWS, and the movement’s success will depend on its ability to strictly adher to the principle of non violence, at all cost. If our bodies are broken by the forces of 1%, those forces are our brothers and sisters, we must remember. They would understand our suffering, and they would join us in time. When that happens this country will be rejuvenated and will rise again to lead nations for years to come. Nothing has really changed, we still have all our great institutions in place, we only need to tame the unabashed Greed that is devouring us.

Then only I will believe my friend’s faith has truly been reposed in where it shall be.
