Developing the Trib’s iPad and iPhone Apps

By MICHAEL SCHENKLER

It’s been a fun diversion. I’ve met some bizarre techies who enjoy life and are good at developing iPad and smart phone programs. they like and understand community newspapers, and so we agree to try a Queens Tribune iPad app.

four versions and 20-plus tweaks later, this rather simple application made me respect the thought and work that goes into all of those apps available on your smart phones.

Well, we got the iPad app up and running – just take your iPad and hit the App Store app and search for Queens Tribune or just go to QueensTribune.com/iPad on your iPad.

now, is that clear?

But we got more than we bargained for in the initial talks. we have an iPhone app also. I think it still needs tweaking. Those X-out buttons are too small or my fingers are too big. There are other tweaks needed, but we’ll get them accomplished with updates.

we haven’t announced the iPhone app yet, it’s just been sitting there in the App Store – like the iPad app, it’s free of course.

iPhone (above) with Queens Tribune app’s opening page. iPad with last week’s Not for Publication column. our simple instructions to get your own free iPad or iPhone app.

There’s no charge for either app (BTW – to those who are new to this stuff, that’s “app,” short for “application”).

That’s great for our readers but it’s great for our advertisers and classifieds, too. The boroughwide ads are all on the app as are the legal ads and the entire week’s boroughwide Tribune copy – special sections and my column, too.

As a matter of fact, during this test period, on the home page of the iPad app, you can push the center button and automatically go to my column on the web. we will of course, continue to maintain our comprehensive website and archives.

The app has some cute little gimmicks – try them; play a little. you can search, you can choose from all the pages along the bottom of the screen or click the “grid” button in the upper right hand corner. You’ll figure it all out in a minute or two of use.

Advertisers – other than our regular Trib advertisers – will have very limited opportunity to get their message across to our readers. we have reserved only three boxes on the home page for potential advertisers. That’s pretty limited real estate, so if you want in, ask your account rep or email me now at mschenkler@gmail.com.

The main purpose of this joint undertaking is to make our news (and ads) more accessible to more readers. we believe we will quickly accomplish this.

But as all of you who use smart phones and iPads (or their almost equivalents) know, there will be tweaks and updates. and in order to perfect our apps, we need your input. Please send your reactions to me at mschenkler@gmail.com.

In the meantime, see you in the cloud (whatever that means).

The city’s antiquated pension system has long been in need of streamlining and updating. The recent agreement reached by Mayor Bloomberg, Comptroller Liu and leading labor unions provides hope that 2012 will be a year of pension reform, but such hopes have previously arisen and been dashed on the rocks of political reality.

New York City employees have different pension plans, all under the management of the City Comptroller. each pension fund is financially independent of the others and has its own board of trustees, which include city officials and relevant union leaders. In general, the city and the unions have roughly equal authority over the funds.

Sometimes the city and union leaders work jointly on pension matters, while at others they are in disagreement, a difference largely based on the relationship between the mayor and the comptroller at the time.

Historically, the city’s mayors and comptrollers have been at odds more often than they have been united. The comptrollership has been used as a stepping-stone for mayoral candidates and under those circumstances it is not uncommon for the mayor and the comptroller to disagree on issues.

The last comptroller, Bill Thompson, left office in 2009 after a close but unsuccessful effort to defeat Mayor Bloomberg’s bid for a third term. The subsequently disgraced and convicted Alan Hevesi sought the mayoralty in 2001, but ran a poor fourth in the Democratic primary, losing to mark Green, Freddy Ferrer and Peter Vallone. Bloomberg won.

Liz Holtzman was defeated for reelection as comptroller in the 1993 Democratic primary by Hevesi, who raised integrity issues against her. she never ran for mayor. her predecessor as comptroller, Harrison J. Goldin, made a bid for the office in 1989, finishing fourth in the Democratic primary. Goldin had succeeded Abe Beame, the only comptroller in City history to ascend to the mayoralty since Consolidation in 1898.

it is one thing for public officials to disagree on a policy issue, a frequent occurrence, but another to be in chronic dispute on questions of investment and expenditure of public funds, in situations in which the outcomes can result in financial gaps of millions of dollars in return on investments. The hydra-headed current system leads to such results.

The relationship between third-term mayor Mike Bloomberg and first-term comptroller John Liu has been particularly chilly. Although they cannot run against each other in 2013 they clearly have different visions as to what the city should do in the interim.

Liu has been in full-fledged campaign mode for the 2013 Democratic nomination for Mayor from the day he took office 22 months ago. whatever justification for a particular dispute it seems clear that the mayor and the comptroller are often on opposite tracks in their judgment of the city’s financial crisis and the way for it to dig itself out of the mess. The mayor sees the solution as based on reducing expenses and increasing revenue with an economy that gets better, while the comptroller believes the city can survive the recession by continuing to spend as it has done in the past.

Of course, all this may change in the next few months, since new economic data is constantly arising and influencing the stock market, corporate earnings, and tax receipts. The financial situation may improve or deteriorate.

The tentative agreement just reached will require considerable fine-tuning in addition to approval by the State Legislature in Albany. it is by no means complete and dispositive of the main issues that have arisen. it does indicate a desire to reach common ground and the recognition that the city’s urgent and continuing fiscal troubles require more savings to be made without endangering the pension system.

Some watchers believe that the agreement is not real, but a paper gloss over a more severe situation designed to buy a few months breathing room in which city and state officials will work out a more comprehensive reform.

The working agreement will require the relinquishment of some authority by the comptroller, who now possesses almost plenary authority in making investment decisions for the $120 billion that remains in the city’s pension accounts. it is a rare for public officials to spontaneously limit their authority in any way, unless they are required to by law enforcement or other external authorities.

Liu has been under fire in the press in recent weeks for alleged fundraising irregularities, including taking campaign contributions from certain donors under the name of others in order to increase the amount of matching funds he would receive from the city’s Campaign Finance Board. if he made concessions as the result of current political weakness, it remains to be seen whether he will adhere to them when his own situation improves.

it should always be remembered that every high political office is but a few steps from the grand juries’ chambers in the county court houses. The higher one rises in the system, the more vulnerable one is to accusations of various types of misconduct.

The trouble is, as we say, that some of the charges are likely to be true.

Best iPhone headset: Choose the best iPhone headset

There are thousands of applications that you can use on an Apple iPhone, and this is just one of the great benefits that you can get from getting this phone. The great thing aside from the amazing applications that are being developed for the phone is that it has literally changed the way that people live, no longer do you have to carry around a variety of different gadgets, and you can literally do most things on this small pocket device. you can now be able to listen to your favourite songs any time you want, you can check your email any time and anywhere you are, and you can be in continuous contact with the world anywhere you are. The amazing this is that it has one of the best bluetooth technology that is out there. Bluetooth is a great way for you to be able to create an even more portable and wireless device, with very easy access to your contacts. But with so many bluetooth devices out there it can be really hard for you to know which is the best one to get for your iPhone.

Since the choice of a bluetooth device can run into the thousands of options it can be really difficult and even overwhelming at times when you want to decide which one to get, and to even know which one fits your needs the best. there are people out there that like to have bluetooth speakerphones but the majority of people out there prefer to have a bluetooth headset so that their conversations remain private in public. The great thing about a bluetooth headset is that a person can stay in constant contact with the phone even when not in use, and when you are making a call you can keep it in your pocket and talk without having to put the phone up to your ear. this is great for situations where holding a phone is hard to do such as when you are driving a car, or when you are working at the office and you have got to do several things at the same time. The most popular bluetooth headset out there for the iPhone is the Jawbone noise shield bluetooth headset made especially for the iPhone.

This headset is not only visually stunning, but it also provides an amazing crisp sound quality, that is not found in any other bluetooth headsets. Of course what most people are worried about is the visual impact a bluetooth headset has, and this one does not fail to please. it is absolutely amazing in terms of visual appeal. so the iPhone and the Jawbone go very well together and something that is definitely recommended if you are in the market for a new bluetooth headset.

With EasyPay, Apple Makes It Easier To Spend Your Money For Its Products

Apple made it easier Tuesday for Apple customers to buy Apple products with a new feature, called EasyPay, built into the latest version of its Apple Store mobile app.using Apple’s updated app, IPhone 4 and iPhone 4S users will be able to use their phones to buy Apple products and schedule a ‘personal pickup’ at any Apple retail store and track the status of their orders on the phone.

Even cleverer: the app can be used to buy ‘select accessories’ in the store by scanning the item’s barcode, making the purchase using a credit card associated with an iTunes account, and walking out.

That last feature might be hard for Apple’s rivals to duplicate. in an application with the U.S. Patent Office published in December 2007, Apple described a wireless system that would allow customers to place an order at a store using a wireless device such as a media player, a wireless personal digital assistant or a cellphone.

Apple’s application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office describes a process for placing an order and then notifying customers when an order is ready to grab at a pick-up station. One goal, the patent application notes, is to avoid an “annoying wait in a long queue if the purchaser arrives before completion of the order.”

U.S. Patent Application #20070291710 also hints that Apple may have bigger plans for EasyPay than just making it easy for iPhone users to spend money at its stores. The patent describes a device that also would keep tabs on where a user shops and what he or she likes to buy. Computers at participating stores would keep track of regular customers and their favorite orders.

Customers might tap a button to order their favorite drink, say a double-shot mocha, as they stroll up to the nearest coffee shop. when the drink is ready go to, the device–such as an iPhone–would chime or blink to let the thirsty user know it’s time to scoop up the order at the counter.

What Myf Warhurst did next

Myf Warhurst, 38, says life gets better with age. Picture: Manuela Cifra Source: Herald Sun

Myf Warhurst is hoping to travel after Spicks and Specks. Picture: Manuela Cifra Source: Herald Sun

MYF Warhurst is unemployed, and you can't help feeling happy for her.

At 38, when many of her mates are juggling kids, meetings and mortgages, the TV star is financially stable, footloose and fancy-free – and excited by what the blank page of her future holds.

Her big break was as a regular on ABC-TV’s hit music quiz Spicks and Specks, which is finishing this month after seven seasons.

It’s going out on a high while audiences "still like the show and don’t hate us", Warhurst says. "I’ve been sacked from other jobs before, so it’s nice to go, ‘I choose to leave now’." she is, of course, referring to her ill-fated stint on commercial radio, but we’ll get to that.

Comedian Adam Hills was living in London when he got the call to host Spicks and Specks. With Alan Brough installed as one of the team captains, a female counterpart was needed. Hills’ housemate suggested Warhurst, whom he’d heard on Triple J. "I went to an audition and had a job in about three days," Warhurst says. "I remember Mum saying, ‘You’d better tape the first few episodes just in case’."

She needn’t have worried. The show has since generated an average weekly audience of 1.3 million for ABC1, spawned DVDs and board games and won both an AFI and a Logie. and as a last hurrah after the final episode airs on November 23, Warhurst and the gang hit the road for a national tour with a stage version of the show, Spicks and Speck-tacular – The Finale.

As well as the odd celebrity interview for Channel 10’s The Project, Warhurst has just finished filming a six-part documentary for Aunty called Myf Warhurst’s Nice. The series, which looks at everyday cultural icons such as the Chiko Roll, is due to air next year. but apart from that?

"I’m not sure what comes next," Warhurst says with her trademark grin. "my options are open, but I’m quite happy with that. It’s exciting because I’m not ready to settle down. I’ve got itchy feet at the moment. me and my partner (her beau of two years, musician Mike Noga, who plays drums in The Drones) are thinking of maybe heading overseas a bit next year. We’ll see what happens.

"Life gets better with age," she adds. "Less insecurities, less worries and I don’t have kids to add to those, so it’s a really good time in my life. my friends have big stresses with families and that kind of thing and I’m a bit selfish, but it’s a nice position to be in. I could travel if I wanted to, and for the first time in my life I can afford to do that kind of stuff. Life’s actually pretty good. Can’t complain."

Warhurst was born in 1973 in Portland in Victoria’s southwest, and raised in Donald in central Victoria. The family settled in Red Cliffs, 16km out of Mildura, when she was eight. for several years, they also owned a citrus farm just over the NSW border, and come harvest time they’d live in a converted W-class tram bought for $500. ("It’s still there," Warhurst exclaims, showing me a pic of it on her iPhone, taken during a recent expedition to the bush to find her former home.)

Her full name is Myfanwy. She’s not named after anyone; her parents Nancye and Ed, both high-school teachers, just liked the name. "They were into giving their kids weird names before that was the done thing. (Oldest brother) Shaun got the normal name, then they lost their minds after that. my other brothers, Kit and Andre, then me."

Being the only girl, she was a tomboy. "Not that I knew what that was even ’til I got older. We’d laugh all the time. I thought it was excellent (having brothers), and meeting all their friends as I was growing up was even better."

Her brothers are all musical (Kit was in Aussie band Rocket Science), and Warhurst studied piano for 10 years but hated the performance aspect of it.

At 17, she moved to the big smoke to study music education and arts at the University of Melbourne. After graduation, she was working at The Vegie Bar in Fitzroy and doing gig reviews for Inpress when she landed the job of music editor of the street mag. she went on to become editor-in-chief, and during this time her radio career was launched with weekly entertainment segments on Merrick and Rosso’s drive show on Triple J.

Warhurst knew Tim "Rosso" Ross through her brother Kit from their uni days. The slot led to permanent work on the ABC youth broadcaster, where she hosted the Net 50 request program on Saturday nights; five years on the lunch shift followed, and a year in Sydney doing breakfast. from 2005 she juggled radio with Spicks and Specks.

In late 2007 Warhurst left Triple J to co-host a new breakfast show on Triple M in Melbourne with comedian Peter Helliar. some fans were less than impressed with her defection to commercial radio, and the move prompted a Facebook page called "Myf Warhurst is going to hell", which billed itself as "a group for anybody who is distraught over Myf’s traitorous act".

Warhurst is at peace with the perceived sellout. "Going into the commercial world annoys some people, but I was 34 and I had to go somewhere. You can’t stay at Triple J forever … You have to leave to make room for other people. It’s a youth network and I was starting to feel a bit old."

Warhurst moved back from Sydney to Melbourne to take up the Triple M post, but 18 months into their two-year contract and amid poor ratings, she and Helliar were fired and replaced with Eddie McGuire’s The Hot Breakfast.

"Everyone gets sacked from something at some point in their life," she says. "The only thing was that it was so public … I don’t think I’d work in commercial radio ever again. The people who do it are amazing, coping with the pressures and demands of the sales department and management. It wasn’t a good fit for me. I’m happy to be honest about that.

"There’s plenty of casualties out there, but we all wanted to try it. You’re not saying, ‘Poor me’, but whether or not it suits you or you can stand it."

Television has also put Warhurst in the spotlight in a way with which she’s never really been comfortable, and she does feel pressure to look a certain way. in October 2009 she wrote in her then newspaper column her feelings about MasterChef’s Matt Preston naming one of his cravats after her because it was "short and slightly wide".

"I’m not making excuses for my weight," she wrote, "but I am the height of Kylie Minogue (five foot nothing) … some people assume that because you’re on TV, you must like being photographed, or think you look good in that dress. Nope … I work in TV because I love my job, not because I think I’m hot. I could drop a dress size. Or I could just get on with life and not live in constant fear of fat content."

Having also been named a worst-dressed contender at the 2009 Logies (and burning the offending one-sleeved dress, albeit as part of a stunt for Triple M), she admits the jibes hurt.

"but then you think, ‘Who cares?’ Your friends love you, your partner loves you, your parents think you’re great, so who cares if someone thinks you’re a bit chubby or you’re really short or you wear a bad dress? whatever."

Like many of us, Warhurst has a love-hate relationship with exercise. she pounds the pavement around the Brunswick terrace she shares with her cats Terry and Steve, and completed a half-marathon several years ago even though she was still running when the road-closure equipment was being packed up. "Exercise is good for your head, but I don’t enjoy it. It’s not fun. You enjoy it after," she says.

She’s similarly philosophical about having kids and gets annoyed when celebs of a certain age such as Megan Gale or Jennifer Aniston are targeted by women’s magazines for their (usually non-existent) "baby bumps".

"Poor Jennifer Aniston," she says. "Imagine getting a new boyfriend and there’s always speculation that she’s going to get knocked up in a second. I should be (clucky) at my age, but no. I used to be, but the older I’ve gotten, the less inclined I am. All my girlfriends have got babies, and my family, and it looks like really tough work. Very rewarding, obviously."

One of the reasons Spicks and Specks has been such a good vehicle for Warhurst is the fact she gets to be herself – whether famously forgetting the name of Nirvana’s most famous track Smells Like Teen Spirit and gracefully enduring the endless mocking, or being genuinely starstruck over guests such as Meat Loaf, Dame Edna Everage and Brian Mannix.

"so many times I’ve sat there thinking, ‘If only I could’ve told my 13-year-old self that I’d be one day sitting next to this person’," she says like a true fan.

Away from the camera, she loves watching trashy TV, listening to anything from Kanye West to Ryan Adams, and has a TV show on the boil about "mid-century modern architecture – those beautiful ’50s and ’60s flat-roof houses" with the tentative title Not so Grand Designs.

Unemployment might see Warhurst travel the globe for the while, but our favourite girl from the country will always know where her roots are.

The final episode of Spicks and Specks airs on ABC1 on Wednesday, November 23, at 8.30pm; Spicks and Speck-tacular – The Finale is at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre on January 12-14.Ph: 13 28 49, thefinale.com.au

How to Use Skype for Voice and Video Chat on Your Android/iOS Device

Skype is the quintessential video and voice chatting app–and you can use it on both Android and iOS. While the Android version of Skype does support video calling, it’s not available on all devices.

Still, Skype is an excellent tool for making free or cheap phone calls–not only can you call from one Skype account to another for free, but you can make domestic and international calls at extremely low rates using your device’s data plan or Wi-Fi connection.

Skype is a free app for both Android and iOS devices. You can find the Skype iOS app in the App Store, while the Skype Android app is in the Android Market.

Supported Android devices include: Samsung’s Nexus S, Galaxy S, Droid Charge, Tab 7; HTC’s Desire, incredible S, Evo 4G, ThunderBolt, Flyer; Sony Ericsson’s Xperia PLAY; LG’s Revolution and Optimus Black; and Motorola’s Droid 3, Atrix, Xoom, and Photon. For a full list of supported devices, go to Skype for Android’s Android Market page (click the “More” button in the Overview section to reveal the list). Skype requires Android 2.1 or higher.

Supported iOS devices include: iPhone (3G, 3GS, and 4), iPod Touch (3rd and 4th generations), and iPad (1 and 2). Skype requires iOS 4.0 or later. if you have an iPod Touch 3rd generation or an iPhone 3G, you will be able to receive only video.

If you have an Android device, you may see two versions of Skype–one called “Skype for Android,” and one called “Skype Mobile for Verizon.”* if you have a Verizon Android device, you may download the Skype Mobile for Verizon app (otherwise, download the Skype for Android app). Skype Mobile for Verizon does not allow you to place domestic calls, but you can still place international calls over a 3G or Wi-Fi connection. Skype for Android, on the other hand, lets you place domestic and international calls over a 3G or Wi-Fi connection.

*For this article, I used Skype for Android, not the Verizon version. When I tested Skype for Android on a Droid X running Android 2.1, there was no video chat option.

Android: Once Skype for Android is installed, tap on the app to open it. You will be prompted to sign into your Skype account (or, if you don’t have a Skype account, to sign up for one), using your Skype username and password.

You will then be prompted to sync your Skype contacts with your phonebook contacts. You can choose to sync all contacts, add phonebook contacts to your Skype list, or sync no contacts. if you add phonebook contacts to your Skype list, you’ll be able to easily call your phonebook contacts directly from the Skype app.

Browsing contacts in Skype for Android.

On the main Skype screen, you’ll see four buttons: Contacts, recent, Call phones, and Profile. The “Recent” button shows recent events–for example, phone calls you’ve missed and instant messages your Skype contacts have sent you. The “Call phones” button takes you to a screen where you can call a physical phone (as opposed to a Skype username), and the “Profile” button lets you update your profile and status message.

The main screen in the Skype for Android app.

You can also access the Settings menu, where you can set up notifications, IM options, and whether Skype starts automatically when you turn on your phone.

iOS: Once Skype is installed, tap on the app to open it. You will be prompted to sign in using your Skype username and password. You must have a Skype account already created to use Skype on your iOS device–there is no option in the app to create a new account. You can create a new account for free by going to Skype’s website.

Once you’ve signed in using your Skype login details, you will be taken directly to your contact list. Initially, you’ll have only your previously saved Skype contacts in your contact list. To see contacts from your phone, tap the “Contacts” button in the top left corner. In the main Contacts menu you can find contacts from your iPhone, but you cannot import them to your Skype contact list.

The Contacts screen in the Skype iPhone app.

The iPhone version of Skype has four tabs: Contacts, Messages, Call, and my Info. The Messages tab lets you send instant messages to people on your Skype contact list, while the my Info tab lets you set up your profile, buy Skype credit, and set up voicemail.

You can make two types of calls using Skype: Skype-to-Skype calls and Skype-to-Phone calls. The first, Skype-to-Skype calls, are free (though you may be charged if you are on a limited data plan), while the second, Skype-to-Phone calls, are billed at a low rate (for example, it’s $0.019/minute–1.9 cents per minute–for calls to the United States).

To Make a Skype-to-Skype Call

Open up your Skype contact list. if you have an Android device, go to your Contacts list, tap the icon next to where it says “All contacts,” and choose “Skype.” if you have an iOS device, open up your Contacts list, tap the button in the upper left corner that says “Contacts,” and, from the next screen, choose “Skype Contacts.”

Then choose the Skype contact you want to call, and tap “Call.” You also have the option to send them an instant message, or, if you’re on an iOS device, to start a video call.

Calling Ron in Skype for iPhone.

To Make a Skype-to-Phone Call

If you want to call a regular phone line, tap the tab for Call phones (on Android) or Call (on iOS). if the person you want to call is saved in your phone’s phonebook, you can tap the phonebook symbol (in the upper right corner on both Android and iOS) and choose a number from your phonebook. otherwise, you can use the number pad to type in the phone number you want to call. Be sure to change the country code to the correct country (because Skype is an Internet calling service, there are no “domestic” calls).

You will be billed by Skype for all Skype-to-phone calls that you make using Skype’s mobile apps. Calls are billed per minute.

As I noted earlier, Skype is the app everyone thinks of when they think of Internet calling. Skype is a great app for cheap data-connection or Wi-Fi calling, but it’s not ideal if you want to make free Skype-to-Skype video calls.

For one thing, Skype video calling is available only on iOS devices (and on some devices–such as the iPod Touch 3rd generation and the iPhone 3G–you will only be able to receive video) and certain Android devices. still, Skype is easy to use, nearly everyone seems to have it, and it’s available on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS, Symbian, and a number of connected TVs. plus, you can make cheap phone calls to real phone numbers–excellent if you routinely have to make international calls.

[Editor’s Note: An earlier version of this article stated that Skype for Android did not support video calling. Skype for Android now does support video calling on 41 whitelisted devices.]

iPhone 4S Rival Alert : Orange To Stock HTC Sensation XE

Orange has put the HTC Sensation XE on its coming soon page, although further details regarding the exact availability date, the contract prices and whether it will be available on PAYG have yet to be published.

The Sensation XE is the follow up to the original HTC Sensation. it swaps the classic HTC design for a more edgy one which mixes black and deep red colours; with the speaker grill and the earphone cord, for example, adopting the latter.

There’s a dual core Qualcomm MSM chipset clocked at 1.5GHz, 768MB RAM, 4GB onboard storage, a microSD card slot, a 4.3-inch display with a qHD screen resolution, an eight megapixel camera plus a front facing one.

It is powered by Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread, has a quoted nine hours talktime (and 540 hours standby) and is jam packed with connectivity features (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, HSPDA).

It is slightly stockier and bulkier than your average smartphone due to the screen size but at 11mm, it is just a tad thicker than the iPhone 4S.

The current best SIM Free and contract prices for the HTC Sensation XE are £430 at Amazon and £25.56 per month on an 18-month deal with 300 minutes, 300 texts and 500MB data at Affordable Mobiles.
