The Death, Rebirth, Re-death, and Re-rebirth of Specs

Blogger Drew Breunig weighed in with this discussion by commenting that customers’ perception of performance is a more important metric with respect to a device’s salability than the speed of the processor or the capacity of the memory. “The Verge’s feature chart covers price, availability, and hardware specs,” Breunig wrote. “Nowhere is there content selection (all devices listed lockdown their content, so this is rather important), cloud services, or perceived speed, which despite being objective is a better indicator of performance for all of these devices.”

That helped start a little fire over at TechCrunch. There, editor M.G. Siegler argued that the appearance of the Nook Tablet’s superiority to the Kindle Fire by way of device specifications, will not matter with respect to the inevitable popularity of Kindle Fire by way of its connection with and to Amazon. “Clearly, [Nook Tablet] is the better value for your money,” Siegler wrote. “And yet, the Nook Tablet will not outsell the Kindle Fire. That’s the thing: ‘On paper’ doesn’t matter anymore. what matters is that the Kindle Fire comes with Amazon’s content ecosystem attached to it. perhaps more importantly, it will be peddled like no other on the all-important Amazon.com homepage. the specs are secondary in this race at best. the reality is that they will be an afterthought. Or again, the Nook would win.”

Blogger John Gruber typically makes very poignant observations, and yesterday’s was no exception. “Spec-based reviews of computers and gadgets are inherently flawed, a relic of an era that’s already gone,” wrote Gruber, before making a valid point that most readers would find a movie review that went into the details about the cinematography, materials used on the set, and the grade of the camera lenses dull and boring – and more importantly, unrelated to the final quality of the motion picture as an art form.

I’m a believer in specs. And no, I don’t think they’re dead; what matters is their place and their relevance.

In my own other lives as an editor through the last few decades, I’ve instructed many new journalists as to what makes a good product review. My basic principle is this: Start by placing yourself in the role of the engineer/developer/creator. Imagine yourself using the tools and resources your company affords you to design and build this product. Is the engineering as resourceful as it should be? then place yourself in the role of manufacturer. are the components as well constructed as they should be? then move to the marketer’s chair. Is the distribution channel as effective in delivering the product, and the marketing and advertising as effective in driving awareness and crafting a value proposition, as they can be? then become a user once again. Do you have in your hands something worth using for the tasks you had in mind for it?

Everything is equally important. You can’t say otherwise and yet, with the same breath, associate yourself with the mastery of the product lifecycle currently exhibited by Apple. no other company at present is as skilled or adept in marshaling every one of these critical aspects.

If you believe that Apple succeeds by virtue of its engineering, then by default, you’ve conceded the importance of specs. Every element of iPad engineering is important in the Apple lifecycle, including the choice of components.

The question then becomes, should a publication make a recommendation based on a parts list alone? Well, if you take a look at the Verge story once again, you’ll notice it didn’t actually do that. it simply put the specs of four devices in (very well laid out) columns. in that limited respect, this article does perform a service. And it put a clear indicator at the end that a product review was forthcoming.

As for Consumer Reports, it made an open recommendation against the iPhone 4 – which some sources now believe to be the best-selling smartphone premiere in history – and for the iPhone 4S, in both cases citing product specs and comparative features in its decision. Picking up on the general tone of condemnation for CR’s “wrong call,” TechCrunch’s Siegler believes both incidents demonstrate the uselessness of specs in rendering product recommendations; in both cases, he says, customers will follow their instincts and their hearts.

Now, let’s think about this for a moment. Should a product review be an assessment of its engineering excellence and performance superiority, or rather a prediction of which one will prevail in the market? Imagine if CR took the blogger route: “Consumers’ Union recommends you purchase the iPhone 4S,” its review would read. “Although we subjected all devices to rigorous scrutiny, let’s face it, you don’t really care. You’re going to buy the product with the Apple logo on it because it’s not really about technology anyway, it’s about fashion. I mean, imagine reading a software review where instead of us telling you you’re going to buy it anyway, we sat there with a stopwatch and timed every transaction it performed. Who would want to read a bunch of boring nonsense about programming and memory latency and antenna attenuation, when what you really want to know is, does it play Angry Birds or not?”

This just in: Specs have never determined the outcome of a device’s popularity, sales figures, or overall usage. If they did, the Apple II, the Commodore 64, the IBM PC XT, the Motorola RAZR, and Microsoft Internet Explorer would never have been milestones in our history.

But the Web has room to inform and educate, and there’s absolutely no excuse for omitting some element that may not be pertinent to most readers’ criteria – or may not yet be pertinent due to lack of proper explanation. If the Verge did anything wrong, it was just to blurt its comparison chart out there in a random fashion. it would have been more pertinent in the context of a greater comparison that measured not only end user experiences and perceived performance levels, but included a parts teardown as well.

If the Web is supposed to be so open, then why can’t Web publishers produce all the information they can about a subject, and let the reader decide what’s important?

Why can’t Apple get iPhone’s design right?

For a company praised for such great design, Apple sure seems troubled getting out an iPhone that works right. Death Grip — and its signal stifling capability — marred iPhone 4 from Day one. Consumer Reports still won’t recommend the handset, even after giving it a high rating. Successor 4S comes along and, uh-oh, suffers from heap, big battery-life problems. the story is everywhere — even Apple apologist blogs report it. perhaps the company should invest more resources in functional design than appearance.

Maybe Apple simply is out of its depth. the company has received generous praise for launching a smartphone from scratch and dramatically changing — arguably pushing ahead — the entire mobile market with it. Apple deserves kudos for its accomplishment. But the company also is a newcomer to a market where depth-of-engineering is necessary to get products right. the smartphone category is also one where form shouldn’t supplant function.

Cell phone design isn’t easy, and I don’t profess to be any kind of expert. But it doesn’t take a Masters degree in industrial design to see that Apple has got problems with iPhone 4/4S. From my perspective as someone who during the mid Noughties conducted consumer surveys about smartphone priorities, battery consistently ranked near the top and telephony often higher. iPhone 4 suffered signal problems and its successor has battery-drain issues. From a usability perspective, failure to deliver core functionality ranks among blunders any company can make designing products.

When working as an analyst and consulting with high-tech vendors about cell phones, my colleagues and I delivered a consistent message: Additional features cannot take away from core functionality. Anything that compromises what’s core should be verboten. For cell phones this is particularly true of telephony and battery life, two features Apple has, so far, mucked up in successive iPhone releases.

Achieving Balance

Depth-of-engineering is particularly problematic for Apple because the company is so secretive about new products. because of the intricacy involved in balancing the many features against one another, broad testing is necessary. I assume, but can’t definitely say, that Apple limits access to new prototypes to prevent leaks about them — then there is the lost iPhone 4 prototype from last year and what that might mean for future testing. if testing is limited, and any smartphone manufacturer might do this, depth-of-engineering can make a huge difference getting the right balance of features that don’t compromise those that are core.

Compare to vendors like HTC, Motorola, Nokia, Samsung or Sony, which have produced consumer electronics products — cellular handsets among them — for much longer than Apple. Motorola invented the cell phone in 1973 and Nokia the smartphone in 1996. These companies have deep device-engineering cultures. It’s part of their DNA.

Apple apologists will argue, with some justification, that the Cupertino, Calif.-based company has deep engineering culture, too, because of Macs and iPod. I agree. But cellular handsets, smartphones particularly, are considerably more complex. something else: Apple often makes functional compromises for purposes of form. the list of products following this pattern is long and the approach is more part of Apple’s engineering culture, I contend. There, looking at Mac and iPod, Apple did fairly well balancing features.

Apple made numerous compromises with the original iPhone, such as no 3G or MMS, but did so for the purpose of balance and protecting core functions telephony and battery life. the company took greater risks with iPhone 3G and 3GS, but still managed to maintain balance — although personally I was not satisfied with battery life, never able to make it one work day on one charge. But in pushing design limits with iPhone 4 and iOS 4, where form superseded function, Apple faltered. Battery life was exceptional, but the antenna design — mandated in part for appearances — brought on Death Grip and widespread complaints about dropped calls, even as AT&T improved its cellular network. A company with deeper-engineering function culture might not have so blundered as Apple did with iPhone 4’s antenna design.

A really big Problem

Now there’s iPhone 4S and the battery-sucking problem. Yesterday, my colleague Ed Oswald joined the chorus of iPhone 4S battery life posts, offering a list of solutions. In group chat, I teased Ed, calling him an Apple apologist for treating the topic so lightly.

Apple’s forum thread “iPhone 4S battery life?” is a litany of complaints. among them:

  • “My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it’s terrible battery life”.
  • “Nearly every day my phone has been completely drained of battery before the end of the day, starting with a full charge. I didn’t realize that this was a persistent and real problem until I had had the phone for a week”.
  • “My iPhone 4, even on iOS 5, would only drop about 2 percent overnight but my iPhone 4S drops about 9-10 percent. and I’ve already calibrated the battery by letting it drain to 0 percent and then charging it all the way to 100 percent”.
  • “I have AT&T, a guy in my office with Verizon has the exact same problem”.

Yesterday, Ed offered five remedies for iPhone 4S battery problems. Absolutely none should be necessary. if there was right balance of functions against operating system capabilities, nothing should need be turned off. another forum poster expresses the sentiments of many — and how bad from usability and customer satisfaction perspectives — is the iPhone 4S battery-drain problem:

This is completely ridiculous…It’s crazy that I have to have a device with 75 percent of the functionality turned off in order for the battery usage to be at a semi ‘normal’ level. There is NO WAY ON THIS EARTH that my phone would get nearly half of the time that Apple advertises this phone should last. I’ve turned off notifications. I’ve turned off the feedback. I’ve turned off location. I’ve turned off calendars. I’ve turned off WiFi. I’ve deleted things. I’ve drained the battery and recharged it all the way. Bottom line, the battery life still *****. For a phone sitting on standby in the locked mode, my battery should not continue to drain the way it does (and I have good network strength where I am)…I feel like I have purchased a device which is MAJORLY FLAWED.

Yesterday, Apple issued a statement minimizing the numbers and blaming iOS 5: “A small number of customers have reported lower than expected battery life on iOS 5 devices. we have found a few bugs that are affecting battery life and we will release a software update to address those in a few weeks”. if that’s true, why aren’t more iPhone 4 users complaining about battery-drain problems?

Whether hardware or software, iPhone 4S carries on the sad tradition of its predecessor, and I can’t help wonder if a company with deeper cellular manufacturing engineering culture and one that puts function before design would have these problems. Google outsources its pure Android phones to longstanding cellular manufacturers — for a reason; now the company is buying engineering expertise and culture with Motorola Mobility.

I own the Samsung Galaxy S II, which battery life exceeds what I got from iPhone 4. now why is that?

Steps For Unlocking iPhone 3G 4.1 Using Safe And Effective Software

Any iPhone user looking for Unlocking iPhone 3G 4.1 software will need to consider the challenges accompanying such a task. with all of the iphone unlocking software available on the internet it is very easy to get confused on which solution is the best iphone software to download.

Is it easy to learn how to unlock iphone 4.1 in today’s era?

Unlocking your iPhone used to be much more complicated than it is today. with the rise in popularity of users being aware of the great features that an unlocked iPhone has to offer, there has been a frenzy in new unlock iphone software being made from iphone developers. out of such developers, the iphone dev team is the most popular, along with the iphone hacker geohot. Their iphone 3G 4.1 unlocking software was quite popular back in the day. however, Apple has continuously fixed the exploits in their updated firmware and made it harder and harder to unlock 3G iphone. those wanting to reap the benefits of an unlocked iphone 3g are going to great lengths to download unlock tools in hopes of getting the process done. unfortunately there are always bad apples in every apple orchard. If you are unlucky enough to download and install such bad iphone unlock software then you will either have a bricked iphone or a virus on your computer. It is because of this that users who have tried to unlock iphone 4.1 baseband 2.10 have left bad iphone unlocking reviews online on many jailbreak websites. It’s hard to blame them for falling prey since anyone who searches the web for ‘can i unlock iphone 3g 4.1′ and related unlock searches will immediately see some of the bad jailbreak websites that we are talking about.

Jailbreak an iPhone 3G differences compared to Unlocking iPhone 3G:

It is easy to think that jailbreaking the iphone is the same as unlocking an iphone. those methods are closely related but they are not the same process. when you jailbreak a 3G iPhone 4.1 you are simply modifying factory iPhone 4.1 firmware and the jailbreak tool that you use for the task will “plant” the ability to actually unlock and jailbreak iphone 3g 4.1. iPhone 3G jailbreaking will also install the jailbreak app called Cydia to your phone. this is the app store that is not owned by Apple which hosts many restricted iphone apps that Apple does not want iphone users to be able to utilize. once of the apps is called ultrasn0w. that unlocking application is what actually performs the iphone 3g unlock to your mobile phone. Now, when you’re unlocking iphone 3g 4.1 firmware you are are in essence doing a carrier unlock to the phone. this carrier unlock is what allows your sim card to connect to multiple cell phone networks instead of the original service provider that has an agreement with that particular cell phone. It is unfortunate that users are forced to use third party jailbreak apps to unlock their iphone 3G but it is the reality.

In order to unlock your 3G iPhone the right way, you will need to know the baseband version of your iPhone 3G. The most popular unlocked baseband is 4.10.01, but your baseband could also be 8b117 firmware. keep in mind you can also unlock ipod touch 3G and iphone 3GS that have this same firmware version.

  • 1. Download iTunes to your computer and plug your iPhone into your USB cable. if you are prompted to perform an iphone reset then do so, but if you are prompted for an iphone software upgrade then do not update iphone firmware until we tell you to.
  • 2. Download and install our iPhone 3G unlock Software to your computer’s desktop. It comes in both MAC and WINDOWS file formats for easy compatibility.
  • 3. After opening the unlock and jailbreak tool, the first step that the software will show is how to jailbreak iphone 3g 4.1. Don’t worry if you don’t know how to do it because it will automatically do it for you. this final preparation step is to make sure you are able to unlock iphone 4.1 baseband 2.10 in the following step.
  • 4. After your iPhone 3G is completely jailbroken, the next step is to peform an unlock for 4.1 iphone 3g in order to free the sim card. Depending on your exact baseband and bootloader versions, the unlock software might have you do an 4.1 iphone update in order to install the latest iphone firmware to the device.
  • 5. After your iphone is updated and upgraded to 4.1 firmare, the ultrasn0w unlocking program will perform the iphone 3g unlock process automatically. It usually takes a few minutes or less so sit back while the ‘magic’ happens! when the program is finished with the process, you will notice your iPhone perform a hard reset. this is to re-boot the new modified 4.1 firmware version in order to finalize and unlock it.

That is all there is to it and you now officially have an unlocked iphone 3g 4.1 and the freedom to choose your cell phone service. If you follow our step by step tutorial then you really shouldn’t have any problems when performing the unlock. just make sure to use the best possible software for unlocking iphone 3G 4.1 and you won’t have any issued to worry about!

Eric Schmidt’s VC Fund Loves Slice, A New App For Online Shopping Addicts

Slice is a new app that aims to make receipt-keeping and package-tracking so simple you don’t even need to do anything.

Plug in your email address one time, and Slice digs through years of e-receipts and turns them into itemized products on goslice.com.

Since Slice monitors your email account for receipts (don’t worry, it’s extremely secure and automatic), you never have to find a tracking number again.

Slice handles new things you order too, giving you one stop shop access to tracking, receipts, shipping info, and even customer service numbers relevant to your order. and it’s all free. No ads, no fuss.

This service is a must-use for online shopping addicts.

You’ll even get notified of a price drop on something you just purchased, and you’re eligible to ask for a partial refund.

Slice launched on the web in may, and has processed more than 4 million purchases already. the mobile app comes out today and has all the features of the web version, plus push notifications for when packages ship or get delivered.

While Slice is already a remarkably easy service to use, CEO Scott Brady has lofty goals in mind. “When the iPhone 4S launched, we were able to see exactly what colors and sizes were being ordered in real time. since Slice monitors your email account, we get real time data on what people are purchasing, and when.”

Brady also noted that since receipts are becoming digital even at brick and mortar stores, Slice will eventually be able to track every purchase you ever make. this includes flights, hotels, and more, where Slice will have special increased functionality.

Clearly, Slice has some pretty valuable data on its hands. the best way to understand Slice is to see it for yourself, so check out our full walkthrough below.

Slice is a private company funded by DCM, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Michael Birch, Rick Thompson, Floodgate, and Eric Schmidt’s Innovation Endeavors.

iPhone 4S: Siri, A5 and five other reasons to dive in, four to skip it

by Bill Palmer

The iPhone 4S is a record setting hot seller thanks to features like Siri and availability on carriers like Sprint, but not everyone is biting. The most common question we get is whether it’s more advisable to plunk down on the 4S now or wait until next year for Apple’s next iPhone which will invariably come with a new bag of tricks. For the majority of users we advise taking the plunge now, but the answer is different for each user based on their circumstance and preferences. For the sake of both sides of the argument, here’s a look at several reasons to buy the iPhone 4S now, followed by a few reasons to consider skipping it.

Siri: any discussion of the iPhone 4S must start here. Unlike voice command products of the past, which were too robotic and too inaccurate, Siri is receiving (mostly) high marks both for its ability to understand plain English and for its accuracy in figuring out what you’re really looking for it to do. but Siri is just one of a number of features the iPhone 4S offers, most of which are less sexy and less publicized…

A5: This microprocessor family first debuted in the iPad 2, and what it brings to the table is speed. Don’t be fooled by the familiar body style of the iPhone 4S, as it’s a different beast inside. The A5 runs circles around the A4 found in the iPhone 4, particularly when using apps (like video games) which are complex and require a large amount of computation or display complex graphics.

Sprint: This one is simple. The iPhone 4 was initially available only on AT&T, then later expanded to Verizon. The iPhone 4S adds Sprint compatibility to the first two.

You’re eligible: If you’re still clinging to your iPhone 3GS because you weren’t upgrade eligible for the iPhone 4 last year or because you couldn’t afford a new phone last year, the iPhone 4S rewards you for waiting. The 4S is a second chance to get the iPhone 4 at upgrade-eligible pricing (anyone who bought a 3GS in 2009 is certainly eligible for an upgrade by now), and it’s a better device than the original iPhone 4.

It’s in white: So you bought an iPhone 4 sixteen months ago, and you ended up with black even though you wanted white because the white model was delayed. As shallow as it may sound, the 4S gives you an excuse to get a white one.

Capacity: The iPhone 4S is the first iPhone to offer sixty-four gigabytes of storage on the high end, meaning you might finally be able to fit all of your music on it. that could mean jettisoning that old iPod classic model you’ve been keeping around purely for capacity purposes.

iOS 5: Apple’s new operating system runs fine on the iPhone 4 and it’s a free upgrade. but as users have found out, its more advanced features run better on the faster iPhone 4S.

There are, of course, reasons to think twice about the iPhone 4S and consider holding off for next year’s iPhone…

Battery: The iPhone 4 represented a major advance in battery life over the 3GS, but the 4S doesn’t offer a substantial boost over the 4. Furthermore, a handful of 4S buyers have found themselves subjected to a bug which actually drains battery faster than ever. that bug should be cleaned up in the iOS 5.0.1 software update, but it might be worth holding off from buying at least until that arrives.

4G LTE: with the carriers being slow to build their nationwide 4G LTE networks (none of them has covered more than about a third of their respective customers, and some of them have done far worse), most iPhone 4S users won’t care that it doesn’t have LTE networking built in. but if you’re the type who likes to buy a phone and then hand onto it for awhile (read: more than a year), you might resent the iPhone 4S by this time next year when the iPhone 5 debuts with 4G LTE built in and the carriers have finally built 4G LTE towers in your town.

You’re not eligible: If you have an iPhone 4, you might or might not be eligible for upgrade pricing as of now. despite two year contracts, carriers offer upgrade pricing at twelve, eighteen, or twenty month intervals after you bought your most recent phone (good luck trying to calculate which interval you’re on; better to just call them and ask). If you’re not yet upgrade-eligible, and those who bought their iPhone 4 later in the game almost certainly aren’t, you could look at paying $399 or $449 for the “$199″ iPhone 4S model. This is true of all carriers and all phones, nothing specific to the iPhone, but it’s worth considering when eyeballing the 4S.

You’re bored: Skipping the iPhone 4S because it looks just like the old one is as shallow as buying the iPhone 4S because it comes in white. but aesthetics can be important, so if you’re bummed that the iPhone 4S re-uses the iPhone 4 body style, we’re not going to judge.

Here’s more on the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5.

iPhone 4s Has Several Glitches – HispanicBusiness.com

THE GIZMO: Apple hasn’t ‘fessed up yet, but from firsthand experience and posted complaints, it’s obvious the company has fallen down on the quality-control job with the iPhone 4S. making matters worse, in its zeal to pile on cool features, Apple has glossed over how those extras tap the system, shortening the phone’s play time between charges. OUTSIDE LOOKING IN: Apple doesn’t send this Gizmo Guy loaners, carefully tweaked in the labs, as it does a chosen few reviewers. I go out and buy their goods like any other consumer. That can be expensive but instructive, because I experience the inequalities of a normal production run unchecked by Cupertino Quality Control. I first grasped this disparity when my wife, Abbe, and I bought seemingly identical 3G iPhones three years back. both units worked equally well at home on Wi-Fi. but when we were moving around in the real world, connecting on the “nation’s most reviled 3G network,” her phone was always first to bring up a website we were both racing to visit. and there were some locations where she enjoyed reception and I, standing two feet away, couldn’t make or take a call. DEJA VU (ALL OVER AGAIN): This situation cropped up recently after we each brought home an identical new iPhone 4S. Only this time, the shoe was on the other foot. My new communicator operated as expected, with that “just OK” call fidelity we all tolerate, but otherwise chock-full of fun. every time I called Abbe on her iPhone 4S, though, I’d hear an echo of my voice repeating what I’d just said. Didn’t matter if I was making the call on a landline or a mobile, if she was in the car or walking. Through user forums, I found other iPhone 4S owners grousing about echo problems. some concluded their problem was connected to the plugged-in Apple earphones/microphone, which we weren’t using! also spotted were complaints from users initiating calls that couldn’t be heard on the other end or were plagued with static. MUM’S THE WORD: The logical conclusion here is that Apple isn’t doing enough quality-control testing as new iPhones are flying off the line. QC costs money and slows down production. and if some poor factory worker was to discover that an inspected phone wasn’t up to spec due to corrupted software, a faulty resistor or a run of bad microphones, then duty might require that the line be shut down. So, to a degree, Apple leaves the quality-control chore to product buyers to do on our own time and dime. Gee, you have a problem with that phone? Wow. Who’d have thunk! Judging from my experience, some customers simply tolerate flaws, just as new car buyers do with spongy brakes or clunky transmissions. or they blame their service provider — a much easier target of wrath, especially if you’re an Apple fanboy. APPLE POLISHING: to their credit, the young men and women tending the Apple store Genius Bar are universally pleasant about taking back faulty goods. They’re also more generous with information than Apple PR. Our initial Genius contact asked first if we’d tried “wiping” the errant phone’s memory and rebooting. We had. After repeating the process to no avail, he went online to HQ, furrowed his brow, then declared that there was, in fact, “an echo issue” with some new iPhones. I pressed him and was told Abbe’s phone had an “imbalance in the settings of the two onboard microphones.” The little one on top is supposed to hear and cancel out unwanted noise, anything that’s not your voice blasting into the lower mike. If the mikes haven’t been adjusted precisely, feedback problems result. Apple stores carry a separate inventory of replacement phones for fast swap-outs. On the day of our visit, the store had run through its allotment. five days later, another kind and patient Genius welcomed us back and pulled out Abbe’s replacement phone. but this Apple rep didn’t like an odd speck of white goop she spotted inside the multi-pin connector. So she set us up with a third phone, which so far has functioned as expected. except, that is, for the short run-time we’ve experienced with the phone batteries not meeting the specified 200 hours of standby time. Last Thursday, Apple released an update to the iOS5 operating system ostensibly fixing this issue (among others). some early-bird upgraders, posting at sites like 9to5Mac, claimed an immediate improvement in battery run-time. Others, however, judged the fix “negligible” or even counter-productive, declaring their iPhones now ran out of juice even faster than before. ASSAULT AND BATTERY: I have theories for the battery bleeding. start with too many operations always on, awaiting your next move. like the cool way just lifting the iPhone 4S to your ear automatically activates the Siri personal assistant. Shutting down Siri, as well as “pinging” location features, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, lengthens battery run time, shared the Geniuses. and don’t forget to double-click on the iPhone’s home button to see all the “apps” unnecessarily running in the background. Press firmly on one, until the bunch start wiggling, then tap on each to send ’em packing. Why doesn’t this “smart” phone automatically deal with the power drainers? Siri had no answer. FYI, Consumer Reports has declared the antenna shortcomings of the iPhone 4 to be resolved on the 4S and added the new model to its “recommended” list. CR is still ranking some Android phones higher, including the Samsung Galaxy S II, Motorola Droid Bionic and LG Thrill.
