How Much Does it Cost to Make the iPhone 4S?

Apple is charging between $199 and $399 for its new iPhone 4S, but how much does it cost to make?

The bill of materials on a 16GB iPhone 4S comes out to $188, according to a Thursday teardown from IHS iSuppli (click below for larger image). Add in the manufacturing costs and it jumps to a grand total of $196. Adding a few gigabytes doesn’t greatly increase that cost; a 32GB iPhone 4S costs $207 to make and a 64GB is $245.

While the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S are identical on the outside, iSuppli found a “wealth of innovation” inside the new smartphone.

“Key among these changes is a custom part from Avago that helps give the iPhone 4S its unique capability to be used in multiple wireless systems globally, while still keeping costs down,” Andrew Rassweiler, senior director of teardown services for IHS, said in a statement. “In another surprise development, the 4S employs a Hynix NAND flash memory device. While IHS has already confirmed multiple suppliers for this part, it does mark the first time that IHS has identified a Hynix NAND flash in an iPhone, as opposed to devices from Samsung Electronics Co. ltd. or Toshiba Corp. seen in all previous iPhone and iPad teardowns.”

Those wireless components are among the pricier parts of the iPhone 4S, coming in at $23.54 across all versions. The dual-mode design makes the device a world phone, which iSuppli said was “a unique design approach compared to that used by most cell phone makers, which use different models with unique wireless subsystems to support various wireless carriers’ standards.”

The Avago component, meanwhile, is notable because it can support 2G and 3G technologies across multiple bands, reducing the required PC board footprint.

“This is a very special converged approach that gives Apple a real technology lead over most other manufacturers, further reducing the complexity of the radio frequency/power amplifier (RF/PA) section of the iPhone line beyond Apple’s already highly-integrated design,” Rassweiler said.

The 3.5-inch display, meanwhile, comes in at $23, while the touch screen is $14, and the souped-up 8-megapixel camera costs $17.60.

The second most-expensive component after the display, however, is the memory subsystem, which comes in at $19.20 for the 16GB, $38.40 in the 32GB, and $76.80 in the 64GB model. The Qualcomm baseband processor, meanwhile, is $15.

“Qualcomm obviously is a big winner in the 4S, with company now taking sole ownership of the baseband processor position with its MDM6610 device,” said Wayne Lam, a senior analyst for wireless communications at IHS. “While the Qualcomm MDM6600 was in the CDMA version of the iPhone 4, the Intel (formerly Infineon Technologies AG) PMB9801 was used in the HSPA model. In the iPhone 4S, Qualcomm no longer has to share the iPhone 4 baseband design win with Intel. It will be interesting to see how Intel responds in terms of winning back this socket in the next design cycle.”

The iPhone 4S also has Apple’s dual-core A5 apps processor, which appears to be manufactured by Samsung.

As iSuppli notes, its estimates do not include expenses like software, licensing, or royalties.

Can you get through a long day without running out of power on your cellphone? At some point, our cellphones stopped being phones. they are now rather powerful computers with one app that happens to make phone calls. other apps let you surf the net, listen to music, read books, wake you up, figure out where on the planet you are and a host of other tasks. All that functionality eats up batteries at an alarming rate. Battery technology has not been able to advance as fast as other kinds of technology. If you manage your day, you can make sure you have all the electrical juice you may need. I’ve always made it a habit to have all the cell phones in the family be the same model. that way we can have one car charger in each car, and even swap batteries if someone needs more power. thanks to the European Union demanding all cellphones use the same charger, it is now a lot more affordable to buy car chargers and wall chargers, so my need to have all the same phone is diminished. I suspect readers who commute to DC every day are used to having a car charger, and plugging their phones into their computer in the office to help them get through the day. what happens though if you do not commute by car, and spend no time at a desk? there are solutions for you. some phones have separate chargers and batteries available as accessories. I know Sprint sells these for one of their EVO phones. the devices come with a battery and a unit that holds the battery during charging. you still need to hook it up to a charger or your computer’s USB port. there are extended batteries that work with many devices, not just your phone. they are larger batteries that you charge up, then when your device is getting low in power, you can plug this external battery to operate or charge your built-in battery. there are even smaller ones that fit on your key chain. If you have an iPhone, this is your best solution since the iPhones do not have user replaceable batteries. I only use my Bluetooth headset in the car. Unfortunately I have to bring it into the house to charge it since the car only charges when it is running, so I often leave the headset behind. A solar charger would let me charge my headset when I leave the charger on the car seat where sun will hit it while I am parked. that could also charge an extended battery. For emergency power generation at night, there are also hand cranked cell phone chargers combined with emergency radios. these often come with the Red Cross logo on them, implying your cell phone is useful in a natural disaster. I am not sure how well the cellphone networks will function after many kinds of natural disasters. I suspect the electricity and cell networks will come back at the same time. iPhone 4S in-depth review: don’t judge this book by its cover – Cell Phones & Mobile Device Technology News & Updates

Just two weeks ago, CEO Tim Cook took the stage to reveal Apple’s latest smartphone, the iPhone 4S. as you have likely heard, much was made about the “disappointment” many expressed in reaction to the announcement. there is no refreshed design, no larger screen, no LTE, and no elongated home button. Those changes could still be in the oven, but we certainly won’t be seeing them in 2011. what the 4S does bring, however, is not to be underestimated. How does it all add up? Read on.

The first thing that you’ll notice about the iPhone 4S is just how familiar it looks. if you never turned it on, you wouldn’t see a single difference between it and its predecessor. that means you have the same steel antenna sandwiched between a glass front and glass back. that also means you get the same 960×640, 3.5 inch display, which, at 330ppi, still has the highest pixel density of any phone on the market.

A5 processor

Once you get past the initial familiarity of its exterior, you’ll quickly realize that the iPhone 4S is a different beast from the iPhone 4. It’s not a radically-different beast, mind you, but it’s more mature than its predecessor and roars in places where the i4 merely purred. this, of course, comes from the dual-core A5 processor. the iPhone 4S follows the iPad 2 as the second dual-core iOS device from Apple.

I was expecting a moderate boost in speed, but was still taken aback at just how snappy the 4S is. having used many dual-core phones and tablets over the past several months, I was still pleasantly surprised at the zippiness of the iPhone 4S. we know that the A5 will allow the 4S to better handle intensive tasks, but it just may be the execution of the more ordinary tasks that make the biggest difference.

But those more intensive tasks are coming as well. Gaming promises to be improved with the A5, though there isn’t much to test it with at this point. A couple of recent Gameloft titles, Shadow Guardian and 9mm, which could get a little choppy at times on the iPhone 4, played much smoother on the 4S.

Infinity Blade 2, which was announced at the 4S event, will be arriving in December and will take advantage of the dual-core processor and upgraded GPU of the A5. Rockstar Games is also releasing the PC/console classic Grand Theft Auto III on both the 4S and the iPad 2 sometime soon. These two games will certainly give us a better chance to see how much the A5 can advance iPhone gaming.

iOS 5

Much has already been made of iOS 5, which we covered in-depth at its launch last week. the update adds a dramatically-improved notifications system, a data-only messaging system for iOS users (iMessage), Reminders, system-wide Twitter integration, and iCloud. iOS 5 is Apple’s biggest update since the firmware’s inception in 2007.

Of course all iOS devices from the last couple of years can update to iOS 5, but the iPhone 4S and the iPad 2 were made to run it. while there is nothing particularly problematic about running iOS 5 on the iPhone 4, the 4S’ blazing speed brings the latest update to life in ways that its predecessor never can.

Apps open instantly, home screen folders are revealed without the slightest hesitation, web pages pan and zoom in real-time, and the Notification Center slides down without a trace of lag. Even the zippier lockscreen sliding and unlocking adds to the overall experience. the iPhone 4 runs iOS 5 well, but the iPhone 4S runs it in turbo mode, and you are left with the sense that you can do anything on your phone with blazing speed.

AT&T’s HSPA+ 14.4

While the Verizon and Sprint iPhone 4S get typical 3G download speeds, AT&T has faster theoretical downloads on the 4S. Apple went agnostic about whether it could be labelled as “4G” in their presentation, but AT&T (unsurprisingly) wants to stamp the fourth G onto their iPhone with a status bar icon. 3G+ would probably be a more accurate way to describe it, but the iPhone 4S on AT&T does at least have the potential to deliver significantly faster data speeds than the CDMA version.

AT&T’s iPhone 4S does use the same HSPA+ connection as other devices on their network that have been labelled “4G,” so at least they’re being consistent. the original Motorola Atrix 4G, the LG Thrill 4G, and the HTC Inspire 4G should all get about the same speeds as AT&T’s iPhone 4S will. that means theoretical download speeds of 14.4Mpbs, though many (or most?) will find their downloads indistinguishable from traditional 3G.

I tested the iPhone 4S on AT&T’s network in Chicago. Though the download speeds didn’t reach anywhere near the 14.4Mbps that was advertised, they were still higher than any iPhone download speeds I’ve seen. as you can see to the left, I averaged over 4Mbps down, which is roughly two to three times faster than what I typically got on both AT&T’s and Verizon’s iPhone 4. others in different parts of the US have reported downloads of 7Mbps or more.

Is it anywhere near the 14.4Mbps that Apple and AT&T are boasting? Not for me, and probably not for you either. can it hold a candle to the LTE that a growing bushel of Android phones offer? No way. still, it is a significant advantage that GSM carriers like AT&T have with the 4S. the extra speed should allow you to do things on the go like watch YouTube videos, load web pages, and talk to Siri a little faster than you could on any other iPhone.

World Phone

In addition to the faster GSM downloads, the iPhone 4S also brings world phone capabilities. this means that each iPhone 4S sold has the hardware to handle both CDMA and GSM networks. So if you’re on a US CDMA network, and visit Europe, you can buy a pre-paid SIM card for a local GSM network, pop it in your iPhone, and avoid roaming fees.

An off-contract, unlocked model isn’t supposed to be available from Apple until November, but some have reported that they are already receiving this model when paying full retail for an iPhone 4S. this version won’t support CDMA networks, as they are rare outside of the US.

There has been some confusion as to how much traveling will actually be possible on contract versions of the 4S. Sprint’s PR team tossed out a real doozy last week, when they said that their model wouldn’t be unlocked for international SIM cards. then they tried to further explain it, and we ended up with something along the lines of “it’s unlocked now, but then we’ll lock it, and if you’re good, we’ll unlock it again.” the lesson here? if you’re a heavy traveler who dwells in the US, you might want to sign with AT&T, or simply get the unlocked model.

Camera

The iPhone 4S camera gets a huge upgrade over its predecessor. Though it “only” supported 5MP shots and 720p video, many found it to be competent enough to become their primary camera (as evidenced by its becoming the most-used camera on Flickr). the 8MP rear shooter in the 4S, however, easily trumps its predecessor, and unless you have professional DSLR equipment, it will likely take better pictures than any other camera you own.

The camera in the iPhone 4S is so good that, if it were the only new feature of the 4S, I would still consider upgrading. the most dramatic difference is with shots that are taken in low-to-medium lighting. the iPhone 4 struggled in these situations, but the 4S takes a gargantuan step forward. Take the example below, of two shots in medium indoor lighting, without the flash:

The iPhone 4 (left) struggled to find balance with the TV screen in the background, and the subject is too dark, slightly green, and washed out. But with the 4S (right), it’s much brighter, colors are vivid, and details are sharp. this is due to the new f/2.4 aperture, which lets in more light, and the hybrid infrared filter, which leads to more accurate colors.

Still shots, however, aren’t the only specialty of the 4S’ camera. it takes much higher-quality video than the iPhone 4 as well. the updated model is capable of taking 1080p video, up from the 720p that the iPhone 4 managed. the sample below was shot on a 4S by Benjamin Dowie.

The camera’a controls also get an upgrade on the 4S. You can now pinch-to-zoom in the camera app, and it will detect up to ten faces and adjust the exposure accordingly. the A5 processor also gives the camera a boost, as you can have the camera app open and ready much faster than ever. in my tests, I was able to go from a locked state, with the screen off, to having snapped a photo in just over three seconds (iOS 5′s new lockscreen camera controls also help with this). Shots can be taken in near-rapid fire secession too.

What all of this adds up to is that the iPhone now doubles as a stellar camera for most amateur photographers. if the iPhone 4 took mediocre indoor shots and very good outdoor shots, then the iPhone 4S takes very good indoor shots and outstanding outdoor shots. it, along with recent Android phones like the Samsung Galaxy S II, is ushering in a new era of smartphone cameras. if you are planning on getting the iPhone 4S and still own a point-and-shoot camera, you might find yourself posting it on eBay soon.

Siri

The upgraded camera alone might be worth an iPhone 4S upgrade for some, but Siri is the killer feature that has the potential to change the way we interact with our devices. as I’m writing this article in my office, the iPhone 4S chimed with a text message. I didn’t want to take it out of its speaker dock, so I asked Siri to read the message. it (or she?) read the message out loud, and I replied in kind, all without undocking the iPhone or even looking at the screen. A long press on the home button was the only physical contact I had with the phone.

This is just one example of the kinds of capabilities that Siri adds. it blurs the line between voice recognition and artificial intelligence, and allows you to use your iPhone by talking to it. Things you can do include: reading/replying to emails and text messages, setting reminders, planning meetings, locating your friends, getting maps/directions (no voiced turn-by-turn navigation though), checking the weather, and much more. that list is likely to grow over the next several years, but this initial release of Siri is an outstanding – and remarkably fun – addition to the platform.

If this all sounds familiar, it may be because Siri used to be a third-party App Store app. Apple bought the company that made it in 2010, and got to work on evolving and integrating the technology. Though the app was updated a few times after being purchased by Apple, don’t make the mistake of thinking that the App Store version and the iPhone 4S are even remotely the same thing. the older version was much more limited, and it also didn’t talk to you. perhaps most significantly, it didn’t have access to stock iOS apps, like Messaging, Mail, Weather, and Calendar. this is one of Siri’s biggest strengths, and it’s going to grow by leaps and bounds as more third-party apps are eventually integrated.

You might be wondering where you might actually use Siri. Sure, it’s fun, but does it serve any practical purpose? With Siri, drivers will be able to manage many core functions of their iPhones, without even taking their eyes off of the road. the same could go for joggers, gym rats, or those answering a quick question while working. Even those who are in a situation where they could use their touchscreen may find it quicker, easier, and more natural to use Siri instead. it lets you continue to do something else, while casually performing tasks that used to require your full attention.

Siri also finally brings voice dictation to iOS, in the form of a microphone on the keyboard (much like on Android). if the iPhone has a glaring weakness, it’s that it still exclusively uses the same tap-only keyboard that it sported four years ago. Siri’s voice dictation addresses that weakness, and gives you a way to quickly produce text.

The voice recognition in Siri isn’t perfect. if you catch yourself articulating your words too casually, it can make frequent mistakes. it doesn’t, however, require a drawn-out, over-articulated, robotic speech. But you do need to pay some attention to your clarity. if you have a thick accent, you may also run into some trouble. Those concerned about this may want to try Siri in a store before upgrading.

With that said, Siri’s biggest strength is that it allows you to speak in casual language. Apple’s Siri team has done a phenomenal job of adding simple, casual speech to “her” repertoire. For example, when Siri asks if you’re ready to send a text message, you can reply “Yes,” but you can also say “Yep,” “Sure,” “Yeah,” or “go ahead.” this leads to the illusion of a conversation, and is the greatest accomplishment of today’s Siri. it makes Apple’s A.I. not only a standout iPhone addition, but a revolutionary smartphone feature that can fundamentally change how we do things.

Summing Up

You could make a long list of things that we thought the next iPhone might be, but that the iPhone 4S isn’t. After last year’s huge iPhone 4 update, many thought we’d be getting annual redesigns from now on. But when you forget about what the iPhone 4S isn’t, you realize that what it is is a much-improved version of an already-amazing phone.

Should you upgrade to the iPhone 4S? if your contract is up for an upgrade, and you know you want an iPhone, then this is absolutely the one to get. while the 8GB iPhone 4 is a great buy at $100, it’s well worth the extra $100 to get Siri, probably the best camera you’ve ever had, and a ridiculously-fast smartphone.

If you’re in the middle of an iPhone 4 contract and are tempted to pay full retail ($700) or switch carriers and rack up an early termination fee, then it’s harder to justify. it isn’t a fundamentally-altered experience from the iPhone 4, so it will depend how much you’d appreciate the speed, improved camera, and Siri A.I. Those who are itching for those features may well find it worth the extra cost, should their budget allow it.

Those torn between the iPhone and any one of the many Android super-phones will want to ask a few questions. if you want the fastest data speeds, then a Verizon LTE handset is the obvious choice. if a large screen is your thing, you’ll also want to go Android. if you’re more of a “more is more” kind of person, then the spec sheets of the Droid Bionic or Nexus Prime will likely make you salivate.

The iPhone, however, is perfect for those wanting the most seamless, hassle-free, simplified smartphone experience out there. in typical Apple fashion, it emphasizes simplicity, user-friendliness, and slickness over brawn, customizability or cutting-edge download speeds. Aside from the aforementioned screen girth and data speeds, the iPhone 4S also offers performance that matches or outweighs any top-of-the-line Android phone (at least for now).

As far as which carrier to choose, that will also depend on your wants. if you’re looking for optimal data speeds, then AT&T is the smart choice (just don’t expect a dramatic difference). if you don’t mind paying more for excellent coverage, then look at Verizon. if unlimited data is what you desire, then Sprint is the way to go.

My final suggestion, when approaching the iPhone 4S, is to wipe your brain of all of the over-the-top rumors that we sifted through during the last year. Forget what you thought the iPhone would be, and you just might find yourself looking at an iPhone that is every bit as “magical” as any device you’ve ever used.

Sprint customers complain of slow network speeds with iPhone 4S

Computerworld – slow performance on the Sprint network with the new iPhone 4S has led customers to consider returning the Apple devices before Friday, when Sprint’s early termination fee of up to $350 will take effect.

Complaints of slow network performance with the iPhone 4S began appearing on Sprint’s community Web thread on Oct. 14, the first day the device went on sale. Customers said Sprint’s network speeds were too slow to support YouTube videos, loading of Google maps or even the new Siri voice application in iPhone 4S.

Similar complaints have ensued in recent days, with more than 61 pages of network problems recorded on the discussion thread “iPhone 4S on 3G data network too slow to be useful” by hundreds of users by early Tuesday.

a recent complaint by a user called “fridge09” from San Antonio, showed an iPhone 4S — on Sprint’s 3G CDMA/EV-DO Rev. a network — getting a download speed of .20 Mbps, compared to a HTC Evo 4G, with 4G turned off and running on the same 3G network, getting 1.52 Mbps — more than seven times faster.

“What’s wrong with my iPhone?” fridge09 asked, adding that a switch back to AT&T’s network might be in order.

Another commenter, Banned-True, wrote late Monday that if the iPhone 4S is not returned within the 14-day return period, “Sprint will not budge on the ETF.” the commenter added, “Do yourselves a favor, return your phone now before the 14 days are up.” Similar comments from others have also been made.

Sprint’s return policy is outlined on its website as being 14 days following a purchase, which would be the end of the day Thursday for an iPhone 4S purchased on the first day of sale, Oct. 14. Also on its website, Sprint says in fine print (click on “Your agreement with us” at the lower left of the page to view it) that an early termination fee of up to $350 “may apply” for the iPhone 4S, which Sprint also advertises as offering “Blazing speeds with unlimited data.” the fine print also says that the ETF won’t be applied for two-year contract agreements that are “cancelled in compliance with Sprint’s Return Policy” of 14 days.

According to the lengthy Sprint community discussion thread, many iPhone 4S customers have been told when calling Sprint service reps that there is a nationwide problem with slowdowns on Sprint’s network. However, some customers have said they’ve been told the problems are related to individual towers that affect all of Sprint’s phones, not just the iPhone 4S, while others reported seeing network speed improvements in recent days.

Vuzix is one of the two leading producers of consumer wearable video displays, and to its credit, its Wrap 1200 ($500) has changed a lot from the 2006-vintage iWear for iPod we reviewed back then. Built with two 320×240 displays matching the resolution of fifth-generation iPods, the $299 iWear had been ultra-simplified to require nothing more than a single cable from the headset to an iPod; it ran for 3 to 7 hours off the iPod’s battery, and at a time when iPods lacked speakers, it came with its own integrated earbuds. But iWear was shaped like a black plastic bar that made users look somewhat like the Star Trek: TNG character Geordi La Forge, and despite its light weight, both the headset and earbuds were uncomfortable.

In the five years that have passed since then, Wrap 1200 has taken more steps forward than back, but in short, the overall package remains at least a generation or two away from making sense for mainstream users. Taking cues from rivals such as Carl Zeiss and myVu, Vuzix has shifted the video displays into what looks like a big and somewhat cheap pair of sunglasses, with mixed results. Rather than positioning the twin LCD screens at eye level, Vuzix places them lower so that you look downwards into them, then gives you the ability to slide and focus each screen for the spacing and acuity of each of your eyes. The level of adjustability is welcome, and contributes to a sharper, less fatiguing viewing experience, but neither the design of the glasses nor the height of the screens feels quite right. Despite its other issues, the thinner iWear bar seemed closer to correctly sized.

The viewing experience is markedly improved over the prior iWear we tested. While the 852×480 screens don’t match the maximum output capabilities of the latest iPods or iPhones, you can easily see that they’re performing video at DVD resolution with a 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio—this can be dropped down to 4:3 if you prefer. between the higher resolution and the wider presentation, videos look detailed and enough like watching a pre-high-definition television that you won’t really be begging for more pixels, though it bears mention that the iPod touch, iPhone 4/4S, and both iPads all have higher resolution displays built in than the ones inside Wrap 1200. They also produce darker blacks and richer color contrasts than Wrap 1200, which while much improved over earlier headsets we’ve tested still puts out slightly washed out imagery, even when you take the time to skip through the menus and tweak the screens’ settings.

It goes without saying that finding miniature, goggle-ready screens with such high resolutions isn’t easy, and putting two of them into a headset surely drives up the price of a device like this. But it also creates a conundrum: why connect a $500 accessory to a $199 iPod touch if you’re going to lose display resolution?

Vuzix would likely offer several answers, starting with Wrap 1200’s convenience and ability to engross the user. iPods, iPhones, and iPads now have integrated speakers, but they don’t exactly immerse you in whatever you’re hearing. Wrap 1200 comes with dangling passive isolating canalphones, and once you put their silicone tips in your ears and the glasses on your face, you can lay back in a chair and watch videos without holding an iPod, iPhone, or iPad up to your eyes. Noise isn’t completely sealed out, but the sound is better than any iOS device’s speaker. If you’ve ever watched a movie on one of these devices, you already know that wearing a roughly three-ounce pair of glasses will be easier than trying to brace your arm and wrist for an hour and a half. Vuzix describes the experience as looking like a 75-inch display as viewed from 10 feet away, and though that’s not quite the TV we’d picture when we look into the goggles, it’s akin to holding an iPhone or iPod touch 2-3 inches away from your face with proper focus.

Despite anything else, Wrap 1200 is definitely capable of being worn without fatigue for extended periods of time. While the headphones are less than ideal—oddly plugged in in front of your temples, and plagued with some amplifier noise that only recedes into the background when voices or music are playing—they are soft, comfortable, and far easier to deal with than the ones we used in iWear years ago. like glasses, Wrap 1200 has an adjustable nose bridge that can be made to fit your face, and the screens can be tilted so that you needn’t stare as sharply down into them as you might fear. They also support three types of anaglyph 3-D content, which you can’t view with an iOS device’s built-in screen. so there are some advantages to using Wrap 1200 rather than just a bare iPod, iPhone, or iPad.

But having said all of that, Wrap 1200’s issues continue to hold it back from being broadly recommendable. The unit requires a remote control and battery unit that only adds to the bulk of things you need to carry around and manage, with a stubby little Dock Connector cord that guarantees your iOS device will need to be right alongside it at all times. You’re supposed to tend to the included twin AA batteries inside every one to three hours, depending on the video source you’re watching, using an included Rayovac wall charger to refuel them. And there’s no getting over the fact that wearing Wrap 1200 still makes you look like a geek. between the shape of the glasses and all of the cables that dangle from them—even more if you connect Wrap 1200 to something other than an iOS device—these still aren’t glasses most people would want to proudly wear out in public. We’d say that the average person would be best off using them at home, except of course for the fact that almost every apartment or house these days would have an actual TV with better sound.

Back when we looked at iWear for iPod, the pitch behind the latest wearable video displays was nearly compelling: video iPods had squint-inducingly small screens, their prices were higher, and their resolutions were comparable to the displays Vuzix and other companies could stuff into goggles. But as time has passed, the equation has made less sense. For $500, you now plug your iOS device into something that downgrades the display resolution, adds 3-D capabilities you may or may not want, and provides the sort of so-so audio quality you could get with any pair of $30 earphones. Or you could spend the same $500 and buy an iPad. None of this is to say that Vuzix hasn’t moved well beyond the wearable displays of years past—to the contrary, it’s most certainly trying—but as portable devices continue to advance in display performance and user comfort, accessories such as this will need to be more than just decent alternatives. If and when they become more convenient than just propping one of Apple’s comparably priced devices up on a stand with a pair of headphones, they may be worthy again of consideration, but for now, Wrap 1200 strikes us as only okay.
