Any.DO Launches A Social To Do List App With $1 Million In Funding

It’s not often that an iPhone user gets jealous of an Android application, but that’s definitely the case here with Any.DO, the gorgeous new social To Do list app for Android launching today. the app comes from the team behind Taskos, one of the most popular To Do list applications on the Android Market.

More notably, Any.DO is backed by $1 million in angel funding from Eric Schmidt’s Innovation Endeavors, Blumberg Capital, Genesis Partners, Palantir (Joe Lonsdale), Felicis Ventures (Aydin Senkut) and Brian Koo and includes Erick Tseng, head of mobile products at Facebook, and Elad Gil, Director of Corporate Strategy at Twitter, as advisors.

Any.DO was founded in 2010 by Omer Perchik, Yoni Lindenfeld and Itay Kahana and now has offices in both Palo Alto, California and Tel Aviv, Israel.

The interesting thing about this team’s first app, Taskos, was that it was meant to serve as market research only. the founders were surprised how popular it became – something that may serve as a reminder about the need for quality apps on the Android platform. Taskos now has 1.3 million users and handles 150,000+ tasks per day. those users will now be invited to try Any.DO instead, Perchik says.

When you launch Any.DO, the first thing you’ll notice is its attractive design. After having been on Android myself for over a year, I can say with confidence that this is still somewhat a rarity for the platform. (Go ahead, flame away). But Any.DO looks great, offering a default white theme and a more “Android-y” black theme.

Like any to do list, Any.DO supports the basics, like adding tasks, marking them complete, setting priorities, etc. But it does a number of other things which make it stand out from the crowd. for example, you can create tasks using voice input, it syncs with Google tasks, and you can use gestures to manage your tasks like drag-and-drop for assigning task priorities or organizing tasks into folders or swiping to mark tasks complete. you can also shake your phone to clear off the completed tasks from the screen.

However, the most important feature is the app’s backend. this task list app is actually intelligent, offering to auto-complete entries as you type. the suggestions of common words and phrases are gathered through the analysis of aggregate, anonymized data from the app’s users. for example, start typing “ca…” and the app may suggest “call mom,” “call dad,” “car wash,” etc. It’s like Google’s auto-complete for tasks.

Any.DO also lets you collaborate on tasks with family, friends and colleagues, potentially displacing group texting, email threads and other more socially focused apps like Facebook or GroupMe. It can offer contact suggestions when building collaborative tasks, and for those who are not Any.DO members, the app supports communication via email and SMS. a future version will send non-users’ replies back into the app, too, similar to how GroupMe works today.

As far as the bigger pictures goes, Any.DO is working towards building out a smarter, more intelligent system that can help you actually get things done, not just list the things you need to do. Details on how exactly that will work are sparse, but a comparison to Siri’s capabilities was hinted at in our conversation with co-founder Perchik.

And no, fellow iPhone users, Any.DO isn’t going to be an Android-only app for long. the iPhone version is just a few months out. in the meantime, Android users, congrats, you can grab the new app from here.

Twisted Pair Adds Android Support to WAVE Mobile Communicator, iPhone to Follow Later… — SEATTLE, Oct. 25, 2011 /PRNewswire/ —

SEATTLE, Oct. 25, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Twisted Pair Solutions, inc., a recognized leader in critical communication applications for secure, real-time collaboration anywhere, on any device, today announced the availability of its WAVE® Mobile Communicator for Android. the WAVE Mobile Communicator augments and extends critical communications by enabling users of smartphones, tablets and other specialty devices to simply, securely and inexpensively communicate with individuals and teams on similar devices, or with mobile workers on two-way radio networks and users in an office environment.

Building on its experience with Mobile Communicators for BlackBerry and Windows Mobile/CE, Twisted Pair has added functionality to its Android application that takes full advantage of the operating system’s capabilities. New features include touch-screen technology, presence, history and mapping capabilities that significantly increase its value as a unified communications and collaboration tool for a fixed and mobile workforce.

“Law enforcement, the military, airlines, airports, utilities and other segments are actively looking at ways to optimize their extended operations by putting powerful, multi-function devices in the hands of their mobile workers,” said Tom Guthrie, president and CEO for Twisted Pair Solutions. “With the Android OS continuing to increase its market share, the number of possible use cases for the Mobile Communicator expands enormously, offering businesses new and exciting ways to instantly and securely communicate with their mobile workers.”

The WAVE Mobile Communicator combines the power and military-grade security and encryption of the award-winning WAVE critical communications platform with a breakthrough communications protocol that allows real-time communication across any WiFi or data network. Users of WAVE Mobile Communicators can now share voice communications with other individuals or groups of users in a true push-to-talk fashion without being tied to a particular piece of hardware or service provider. This secure, carrier and device agnostic approach radically redefines the role and value of push-to-talk for business and government users.

The Sainte-Anne Police Department, in rural Manitoba, Canada, has been using WAVE Mobile Communicators since 2010 and continues to benefit from the expanded communication network and technology choices that come with the solution.

“For us the real advantage of the WAVE Mobile Communicator is that it enables all officers to be reached at anytime, anywhere, unlike traditional radio networks that have a limited range,” said Chief Marc Robichaud. “Regardless of where any of us might be, we stay connected and are fully briefed on any incident well before we arrive on scene.”

WAVE is the industry’s only pure-software solution dedicated to providing ubiquitous voice communications. whereas other technologies require vendor-supplied and often proprietary servers and data network components, WAVE operates on off-the-shelf, industry standard hardware. WAVE’s software-only approach enables greater deployment flexibility, lowers acquisition costs and preserves prior investments in network, server and desktop infrastructure.

WAVE Mobile Communicator for Android is a key component of WAVE 5.3, the latest version of Twisted Pair’s award-winning critical communications platform. WAVE 5.3 also includes WAVE Communicator for Microsoft SharePoint, an application for integrating communication capabilities into Microsoft SharePoint 2007 and 2010, and WAVE Web Communicator, a feature-rich web application that allows any office-based or mobile worker to monitor, transmit and receive audio from multiple communication systems using a browser-based application.  Twisted Pair will be adding Android support to its WAVE Connections cloud-based voice communications service. WAVE Connections is a free service and users can register for an account online at waveconnections.com.

WAVE Mobile Communicators are now available for Android, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile/CE smartphone, tablets and custom devices. iPhone 4 and 5 will be supported later in 2011.

Cell phone repair stores flourish across the Tampa Bay area

Laid off from work, Brian Kirk decided last year to start his own business.

He has a degree in electronics. His wife, Marinella Di Benedetto-Kirk, is addicted to her BlackBerry. One day while researching franchises, they learned about a chain of stores called CPR, or Cell Phone Repair.

The 10-year-old brand started in Orlando and grew nationwide, but there were none in the Tampa Bay area.

“It sounded like a good opportunity, so we said let’s give it a shot,” said Brian Kirk, 41.

In July, the Kirks opened CPR Tampa Bay on Preserve Walk Lane in New Tampa. The store fixes all makes and models of cell phones, as well as mp3 players and video gaming systems.

Like other business owners in the area, the Kirks are taking advantage of a robust cell phone repair market that has grown with the popularity of smartphones too expensive to replace easily. Common cell phone fixes have a price tag between $50 and $150, store owners said. by contrast, buying a new smartphone can cost upwards of $600.

That’s where repair shops come in like the Kirks’, uBreakiFix in Carrollwood, the iHospital in South Tampa and iFixandRepair in Brandon.

Some say the trend is mirroring what happened to the auto industry over the last century. When automobile manufacturing increased and more people bought cars, repair shops flourished, too.

The most common request the Kirks receive at CPR is to repair water damaged phones. One woman came to the store after she dropped her iPhone 4 in a lake, Kirk said.CPR fixed the phone, but about a week later the woman returned. She had dropped it again — this time in a pool.

Owners of the Cell Specialists on E Fletcher Avenue say they were ahead of the curve. back when the store opened 11 years ago, most clients were businessmen who needed help retrieving data stored on brick-like mobile phones.

Over the years, cell phones got smaller and cheaper and some questioned whether a repair shop that only fixes mobile phones was necessary. Sam Marcos, who co-owns the shop with Waled Ismeal, predicted the phones would eventually morph into minicomputers that people couldn’t live without.

“We were telling everybody, just hold on a few years and you will see,” Marcos said.

Located in a strip mall, one side of the shop is a retail area where customers drop off phones and browse a large selection of accessories. on the other side, technicians work at stations lined with microscopes, a variety of battery chargers, and tiny work tools.

On Saturday afternoons, Marcos said, the retail side is standing-room only.

“The busiest stores in town are cell phone repair shops right now,” he said.

Many of the newest repair shops in the Tampa Bay area are part of larger chains. The owners of iFixandRepair once operated independent AT&T wireless stores across Florida.

“We sold all 45 locations and kind of changed gears into the service and repair business,” regional manager Jason Donahey said.

The iFixandRepair chain launched only a year ago but has already grown to about a dozen stores. The company fixes all makes and models of personal electronics and is mostly found in malls.

In addition to a store inside Westfield Brandon, the chain also has a location at Tyrone Square Mall in St. Petersburg and was expected to open a store in Westfield Citrus Park this weekend, Donahey said. An International Plaza location is also in the pipeline.

As the industry flourishes, the Better Business Bureau advises mobile phone owners to do their homework before choosing a repair shop.

They should first check their manufacturer’s warranty to see if the repairs are already covered before paying out of pocket, according to Karen Nalven, president of the Better Business Bureau of West Florida.

If not, they should verify the repair shop is reputable, get quotes in writing and look for companies that guarantee their repair work.

“Many complaints received by the BBB indicate consumers pay for repairs and end up with a phone that still does not work or the phone is never to be seen again,” Nalven said.

That might be less likely to happen at the iHospital in South Tampa where employees wear scrubs and repair labs have “operating room windows” that allow customers to monitor the work. that puts phone owners at ease to know they can see exactly what is being done to their pricey gadgets, owner Ross Newman said.

“It’s not disappearing into the back room,” he said.

Newman said he set out to reinvent the cell phone repair shop experience when he opened the shop in January 2010. now there are five stores, including one by the University of South Florida, and two more in Tennessee are on the way.

The iHospital stores service only Apple devices, and medical references don’t stop at the name or the “operating rooms.”

When a technician successfully completes training, Newman gives them the title DiD, or “doctor of i-devices.”

The young entrepreneur, who turns 27 on Saturday, says he has been a business owner since launching a wholesale jewelry company at age 14. Over the years, he said he developed software for Apple and later fixed iPhones and iPods for friends.

Newman tried to go the college route. But after taking a class during one semester at the University of Florida, he called it quits and went back into business for himself.

iOS 5 battery fix gets mixed reviews–plus more fuel for Apple rumor mill

Apple surprised users this week by delivering its battery-life-fixing update to iOS 5 sooner than expected. But complaints about the problem continued.

The update arrived a little more than a week after Apple first acknowledged that some users were, in fact, running into problems with battery life after upgrading to the newer version of iOS. Apple then promised to deliver a software update to fix the issue, which the company said would be here “in a few weeks.”

Instead, the update came just eight days later, on both iTunes and as the first over-the-air update on devices–a feature that was added as part of iOS 5.

But the update doesn’t seem to be a fix-all for the problem. Yesterday, numerous users complained that the issue still existed, and some even said it was worse. Apple responded by saying the fix had addressed most aspects of the problem but that the company was continuing to investigate “a few remaining issues.”

Besides attempting to tackle the battery-life situation, iOS 5.0.1 brings multitasking gestures to owners of the originaliPad, fixes a security issue for iPad 2 users with a Smart Cover, and brings an improvediPhone 4S dictation feature to Australian users.

Read on for a rundown of everything else that happened this week in Apple land.

Apple Talk Weekly rounds up of some of the top Apple-related news and rumors. it appears every Saturday morning and is curated by CNET’s Apple reporter, Josh Lowensohn.

Apple settles split cord MagSafe lawsuitApple this week reached a settlement in a class-action lawsuit targeting older models of its MagSafe power adapters that had a nasty habit of splitting near where the cord met the magnetic housing. those who bought a replacement may now be entitled to a full or partial refund. Apple has also listed information on what the problem looks like and what users should do with their damaged adapters.

Apple begins selling unlocked iPhone 4S in the U.S.Without much ado, Apple began selling the unlocked version of theiPhone 4S in the U.S. through its online store yesterday. the phone can be purchased by users on GSM networks without signing a new contract with their carrier. that luxury comes at a price however, with the 16GB model running $649, the 32GB version at $749, and the 64GB model for $849. Worth noting is that this version does not work with CDMA networks like Verizon and Sprint. Apple sold unlocked versions of the iPhone 4S in other countries from the get-go.

Apple’s iOS Store app adds pay with phoneApple updated its Apple Store app this week with a rather neat trick. the new feature lets you buy items within stores using the company’s EasyPay system. the feature doesn’t work for big ticket items like iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers. Instead it’s for the small stuff, like accessories, which can be bought after being scanned with the iPhone’s camera. the other new option that came with the update was the addition of in-store pickup, letting you buy an item from home for later retrieval in one of Apple’s stores–something Apple recently added to its normal online store.

Hidden features spotted in iOS 5A pair of hidden iOS 5 features were unearthed this week, the first being the much-rumored but hidden panorama mode in Apple’s iOS camera application. that was dug out by developer Conrad Kramer, who posted instructions on how you can turn it on by tweaking a preferences file then resyncing your phone. the other feature is an autocorrect tweak that adds a list of autocorrect suggestions on top of the keyboard, similar to what’s on Google’s Android keyboard. just like the panorama mode, that takes some tweaking in preferences files to get things working.

iPhone 4S preorders in Hong Kong sell out in 10 minutesApple’s iPhone 4S went on sale in the U.S. and a number of other countries last month, but Hong Kong got the gadget only this week. the phone sold out of preorders in 10 minutes, later leading to lines some 3,000 people long.

Here’s news agency AFP’s video of the line forming:

Voice behind British Siri goes publicSiri may be known by most in the U.S. as a sassy female, but in the U.K. it’s voiced by former technology journalist Jon Briggs. In an interview with the U.K.’s Telegraph this week, Briggs outed himself as the voice of “Daniel,” the male voice used in the U.K. localization of the personal voice assistant. In the interview, Briggs said he was told by Apple not to tell anyone he was the voice behind it, despite having done the voice recordings six years ago for a company called Scansoft that turned his 5,000 sentences into enough tones to say any word.

Developer ports Siri to iPhone 3GSNever mind the fact that it doesn’t seem to run that well, developer Ryan Petrich this week managed to get Apple’s Siri software working on an iPhone 3GS. Among other things, Petrich’s software–which he hasn’t released publicly–requires a jailbroken iPhone, and a very quiet environment, owing to improvements in voice cancellation technology that came in later-generation iPhone models.

Steve Jobs nominated for Time Person of the YearSteve Jobs got a nod from Time Magazine’s 2011 Person of the Year committee this week. NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams was the one who nominated Jobs, saying he “changed the world.” if Jobs ends up getting the award, he’d be the first person in the magazine’s history to get it posthumously.

“Lost” interview with Steve Jobs coming to theatersLandmark Theaters plans to screen a 70-minute interview with Steve Jobs, conducted in 1995. the screenings, which take place November 16 and 17 in select theaters around the U.S., are of an interview conducted by writer and producer Rober Cringely for his 1996 PBS miniseries “Triumph of the Nerds: the Rise of the Accidental Empires.” Some 10 minutes of the whole interview ended up in the program, with the original copy later being lost. the screening is of a VHS duplicate that was recently discovered.

iPad used for voting in Oregon electionNo, this didn’t involve outright replacement of voting machines–instead, Apple donated five iPads to the state of Oregon to help disabled voters cast their ballots. those iPads featured a specially made application and were taken around to nursing homes and community centers.

iOS 5 on almost 40 percent of iPhonesOnline ad network Chitika said this week that 38 percent of iPhone users on its network were running Apple’s latest mobile operating system. Not surprisingly, the majority of users are still on iOS 4.

Rumors

Siri not headed to older iPhones, devicesHave you been hoping that rumor about Apple testing Siri on older devices meant the sassy personal assistant would be coming to your iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4? Alas, the rumor is looking properly debunked after a report from developer Michael Steeber this week. In it, he shared a purported e-mail reply from Apple after having requested the feature. “Siri only works on iPhone 4S and we currently have no plans to support older devices,” the company replied.

China Mobile to Apple: iPhone deal will cost youIn a report this week, Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu claimed that China Mobile, a carrier in the region with more than 628 million wireless subscribers, was looking to get a piece of the App Store action if it were to carry Apple’s device. Wu said China Mobile wants in on the revenues Apple generates from the App Store, which goes around carriers to split profits between Apple and developers.

Apple may open Grand Central store this monthApple is reportedly on a tear to get its Grand Central terminal store up and running ahead of Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving in the U.S., which is one of the busiest shopping days of the year. the new store is in a position to get considerable foot traffic over the next few months with travelers going back and forth to holiday destinations.

iPhone 4S demand slowing? Not so fast.A report out of the Commercial Times made waves this week after claiming that Apple was scaling back its parts orders for the iPhone 4S. Analysts were quick to offer their dismissal of the claims, pointing to Apple’s continuing difficulties in keeping units on shelves, with a 1-2 backlog on new orders, and Apple’s own stores running out of stock.

Dual light bars in iPad 3?a report this week suggested that for its next generation of the iPad, Apple is going with additional oompf in the back-lighting technology it uses. DigiTimes said Apple is eyeing a move to two separate back-lighting bars, or one that uses twice the LED chips. the idea is to get more light through a display that will have a higher resolution than that found on existing first- and second-generation models.

How to Use Wireless Sync in iOS 5

The new wireless sync feature of iOS 5 makes syncing your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch via Wi-Fi with a computer running iTunes an easy matter. to get started, make sure you’ve synced your iOS 5 device with your computer via cable at least once; also make sure you allow iTunes to wirelessly sync with your device by selecting “Sync with this iPhone over Wi-Fi”. from here on out, you should be able to sync the device wirelessly with your computer by following the steps below.

1. make sure your computer is connected to a wireless network and is running iTunes.2. Your device needs to be plugged in to initiate Wi-Fi Sync, so make sure you connect it to a power source via dock or power adapter. Having a portable charger or an extended battery attached to your device should also do the trick.3. Open the Settings menu by tapping the button on your iOS 5 home screen.

4. Navigate to General, iTunes Wi-Fi Sync.

5. at this point, you should see a list of all computers available on the Wi-Fi network. Select the computer you want to sync with, and tap the Sync now button.

Congratulations! If you’ve done everything correctly, your device should sync wirelessly with your computer, and will now do so automatically whenever you have your device plugged in and connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your computer.

UNLOCKING THE iPHONE

Unlockingtheiphone.net gives a custom-built, one click unlocking service to unlock your handset for all networks in less than 5 minutes. it works on all handset models 2G, 3G, 3GS and iPhone 4/4S right up to and including the current version iOS5.

A great quality of our unlock is being able to make FaceTime video calls over 3G, rather than being restricted to WiFi! Another UnlockingtheiPhone first.

Another one-of-a-kind, original feature of our service is the Personal WiFi Hotspot aka free tethering – use your iPhone 3G as a modem over Bluetooth or USB to connect your laptop to the internet anywhere you are! with our unlock, you get this ability very easily. In fact, the speed of the connection is incredible, particularly with 3G (7.2Mbps!).

Version 3.1.3 comes totally with MMS BUILT IN to the messaging app yet on the first generation iPhone, and not some 3rd party hack either, precisely the same MMS functionality as the iPhone 3G (this is unique to Unlockingtheiphone.net!), Search, Stereo Bluetooth, Send files via Bluetooth, iPod vibrate to shamble, Parental Controls, and more. See our feature on our news blog for more information.
