Smartphone App Downloads Nearly Doubled in 2 Years

Mobile app downloads are on the rise — so much so that half of adult cellphone owners have apps on their devices, according to a new study.

a survey by the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project found that 50 percent of cellphone owners had apps on their mobile devices in August 2011, up from 43 percent from the previous year. This includes phones that came preloaded with apps.

The amount of adult cellphone owners with downloaded apps has nearly doubled in the past two years, from 22 percent in September 2009 to 38 percent in August 2011. [Read: Banned! top 10 Apps that Got Zapped]

The survey was conducted among 2,260 adults ages 18 and over on both landline and cellphones. The margin of error for the total sample is 2 percentage points.

The survey also found that among the 10 percent of adults who currently own a tablet computer, about 75 percent report downloading apps to their tablet.

The most commonly downloaded apps are those that provide regular updates about everyday information such as news, weather, sports or stocks (74 percent), the report said. Apps that help people communicate with friends and family are also popular (67 percent), as well as those that help the user learn about something in which they are interested (64 percent).

Although the survey did not ask respondents about gaming apps, the report cited a recent Nielson study that found these apps to be the most popular, with 64 percent of app downloaders having used a game app in the prior 30 days.

“as we’ve seen with almost all new Internet technologies over the past decade, apps have gained a foothold in a fairly concentrated segment of adults and will likely spread from there to a more diverse population,” said Kristen Purcell, author of the report and associate director for research at Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project.

“however, it was surprising to us that only some apps have sticking power,” Purcell told TechNewsDaily. “The app market is huge, so you would think people are using apps constantly. People are only using a handful of apps on a regular basis.”

About 46 percent of adults who download apps said they have paid for one, which is statistically equivalent to the 47 percent who reported doing so in May 2010.

Samsung Galaxy S3 complete guide

For all Samsung’s patent woes with Apple, one thing is clear — people are loving the Galaxy range. this autumn the Seoul-based company shipped 6 million more smart phones than Apple, and Samsung is now the biggest smart phone maker on the planet.

Its next flagship device, which pretty much everyone expects to be launched at February’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, will be the Galaxy S3. Will Samsung take this opportunity to break its fixation with black rectangles and deliver something completely different? Or will it be steady-as-she-goes with just power, speed and feature upgrades? Read on for our best guesses…

normally, we like to start our predictions by gushing over a gadget’s new look, feel and design — it’s the ego-massaging equivalent of a fairground fortune teller saying how tall, dark and handsome you are.

Galaxy phones have always been about their screens — luscious great slabs of glass straining to burst their housings, with dollops of colour dripping from their OLED innards. The Galaxy S2 has a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus screen that gives probably the best colours and contrast of any mobile device, even if it lacks the sheer raw detail of the iPhone 4S.

The safe money is on the S3 shipping with the screen seen on the recently announced Galaxy Nexus — a pin-sharp 720×1,280-pixel affair with 16 million colours, probably measuring 4.6 inches.

Specs leaked in October revealed a 4.6-inch screen and a 1.8GHz processor.

However, if you’re in the mood for a flutter on the S3’s design, consider this: Samsung let slip in October that they would be launching hardware with flexible OLED (FOLED) technology in 2012, and hopefully in ‘the earlier part’.

Because OLED screens have no backlight, they use less power and are generally slimmer than traditional LCD displays. They can also be fabricated on flexible materials and curved, bent or even rolled up completely — and still show images and full-motion video. The downside is that OLEDs lack punch and can be overwhelmed in bright light

if the S3 has a FOLED screen, then all design bets are off (there’s no point putting a flexible screen in a plain old rectangular chassis). in this case, we’d expect to see something cool like a reimagining of Nokia’s classic 8110 ‘banana phone’ — but this time with the handset being all screen. Wackier options like rolled-up or pull-out screens are likely still to be some way off.

whatever happens with the display, we’re pretty sure this phone will pass on the Apple-baiting front button found on today’s S2.

that the Galaxy S3 will be running the latest Android 4.0 operating system — Ice Cream Sandwich — is all but given. The real question is what Samsung is planning for the TouchWiz skin, now that Android 4.0 has stolen the thunder of features like resizeable widgets and easy screen grabs.

The pop-up mini apps are likely to expand to include more features — and perhaps a task manager that actually works this time. Another welcome step forward would be taking Samsung’s clunky Social Hub off one of the home screens, letting you access basic updates and post anywhere you find yourself.

The guts are rumoured to be Samsung’s ARM A9-based Exynos 4212 chipset, clocked at a ferocious 1.8GHz. that alone would make it one of the fastest phones around (and nearly twice as fast as the iPhone 4S), but Samsung is also claiming hefty speed boosts on graphics and battery-friendly power-saving features.

The S3 will take a leap in multi-tasking prowess. it is likely to be the first smart phone to boast 2GB of RAM, and will come with a generous 32GB of storage.

Sit yourself down and take a deep breath… we could see a Galaxy S3 with a 1.8GHz processor that’s nearly twice as fast as the iPhone 4S.

The S3 is likely to pack a 12-megapixel rear camera, up from 8-megapixels in the S2. normally, that would have us fishing for similies along the lines of a jet engine being dropped into a Segway. after all, a dull, grainy 12-megapixel snap is really no better than a dull, grainy 8-megapixel picture; it just takes up more memory.

But Samsung is going to do something clever — it looks as if the S3 will have a 1/2.3-inch sensor. That’s much bigger than the 1/3.2-inch CMOS chip found in many phones, including the iPhone 4S. To give you an idea of how that can impact image quality, check out another device using a 1/2.3-inch chip: the ultra-stylish £500 Pentax Q system camera.

sure, the Samsung’s optics will be much worse than Pentax’s lenses, but there’s a real opportunity here for low-light images that don’t degrade into mush, as well as good levels of detail from everyday shots. Add to that Ice Cream Sandwich’s easy panorama, timelapse video and face tagging skills, and you’ve got a real digicam rival. But still no zoom, of course.

Need to get close to the facts on the new Samsung Galaxy S3? Here’s what we think we know:

  • 4.6-inch Super AMOLED Plus screen at 1,280×720-pixel resolution
  • 1.8GHz chip with 2GB RAM for zippy multitasking and games
  • Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with a refreshed TouchWiz skin
  • Camera-quality 12-megapixel photos
  • Styled like the Galaxy Nexus

and here’s what we’re hoping for:

  • A flexible OLED screen on a jaw-dropping curved chassis
  • TouchWiz mini apps that put social networking front and centre
  • Ultra-high ISO photography so we don’t even need to use the sickly built-in LED flash

Comparison of Different Protections for Smartphone iPhone

The iPhone is an ultra advanced technology and therefore, it must be accompanied by a case for it to shocks, streaks, dirt and everything else. in addition, most leather cases are seen as very trendy at the moment and enjoy a well-deserved esteem among iPhone owners.

Many types of cases exist today and are made of different materials to protect our iPhone leather jewel cases, holsters, silicon cases through the crystal and gold! for each of the iPhone owners, there will be a cover that will be perfectly adequate. By buying a cover for your iPhone, you will not only perfectly preserved a smartphone but you can also shine in society with a beautiful leather sheath and up to date.

Like many other gadget present today in the stores, the iPhone is an excellent instrument to deal with when bored. the iPhone is an expensive smartphone whose cost can easily exceed a few hundred euros (by not subscription), and the owner absolutely must preserve it with a case of a perfect design. These Leather covers are made so well they protect the iPhone, whatever its position or manipulation.

But now there are many types of case for these brave smartphones: the flexible caskets do not sell very expensive and preserve the mobile to a minimum, the protections hard plastic fully effective against streaking and luxury leather cases that preserve fully iPhones with finesse impossible to have on other types of case thanks to the leather that is.

These leather cases optimized specifically for the iPhone are also available with a folding which can effectively protect the screen shots and streaks. in addition, their usability is often exceptional. But there is a backlash because these ducts premium cost steep but as we teach our common sense: the quality, it is paid.

Since the company Apple has sold the first iPhone, smartphone astronomical amounts were sold and the Apple brand is now recognized and brought in high esteem worldwide. Despite this dominance, Apple does not offer real protection leather to protect his miniature masterpieces. Many designers of leather cases for iPhone 3G will be placed on the market left by Apple plan.

But in addition, luxury also wanted to take advantage of this lucrative segment by selling luxury iPad sleeves made with unusual materials and unaffordable as diamonds and gold. When you finally decide to pay you a case for your iPhone, many factors must first be studied. First, the cover should fit completely the shape of your pocket.

Also take care that the plastic is not too bulky and does not bother you when you need to take it with you and when you’re having fun with your iPhone. then, make sure that protection includes protection for the screen of the smartphone (better).

Leather covers with a protective flap that are best suited for this. Finally, shop around to provide you with a sheath made well enough that you do not move for someone too “old school” when you remove your iPhone from the case

Fans queue for iPhone, despite criticism

TOKYO/LONDON (Reuters) – Apple Inc's new iPhone went on sale in stores across the globe on Friday, prompting thousands to queue around city blocks to snap up the final gadget unveiled during Steve Jobs' life.

Shares of Apple rose 2 percent in early trading after queues wound down the streets of Sydney, Tokyo, London, Paris and Munich to get their hands on the iPhone 4S, despite criticism about the lack of a design revolution and reports of software glitches.

“I am a fan, a big fan. I want something to remember Steve Jobs by,” said Haruko Shiraishi, waiting patiently with her Yorkshire terrier Miu Miu at the end of an eight-block queue in Tokyo's smart Ginza shopping district.

In new York, some consumers got up early to buy the phone. While the line outside Apple's flagship Manhattan store no longer extended around the block after a half-hour of sales, more people joined it as the morning progressed.

The new model looks similar to the previous iPhone 4, but has an upgraded camera, faster processor, enhanced security and voice-activated software, which lets users ask the phone questions. The voice software drew glowing reviews.

“I had been thinking of this phone for a long time,” said Chad Bullar, 23, a new York University student who is buying the phone for its new messaging service and the voice software. “I was going to wait for the iPhone 5, but that seems like a year away, so I got this one.”

The phone — unveiled just a day before Jobs died — was initially dubbed a disappointment because it looks the same as the last iPhone. But anticipation of the “Siri” voice software helped it set a record with initial online orders on October 7.

Apple CEO Tim Cook and his executive team hope the first device sold without their visionary leader at the helm will protect the company against a growing challenge from the likes of archrival Samsung Electronics.

The South Korean company, which powers its phones with Google's Android software, expects to overtake Apple as the world's biggest smartphone vendor in terms of unit sales for the third quarter.

“(Jobs) made everything better and the products he released were thought through in such detail,” Duncan Hoare in London said, after a loud roar greeted the opening of the store. “It was about the beauty of something and the simplicity.”

Apple does not release sales on launch day, so gauging initial figures is difficult. however, it took more than 1 million online orders in the first 24 hours after its release, exceeding the 600,000 for the iPhone 4, which was sold in fewer countries initially.

“Despite the initial disappointment that this wasn't an iPhone 5, the reality is we're still seeing the usual frenzy that we've got used to on launch day,” analyst Ben Wood at CCS Insight told Reuters. Analysts expect global sales of a few million phones on the first weekend, he added.

Unlike many in Tokyo, shoppers in European cities told Reuters they wanted the phone because it was a “lifestyle choice” and not necessarily a tribute to Jobs.

“I need a new one since my dog destroyed my old 3GS,” said Gaby Wunder-Sambale, 45, shivering in Frankfurt.

Despite the enthusiasm at Apple stores, the launch was marred somewhat by widespread complaints this week on the Internet about problems downloading iOS 5, the latest version of Apple's mobile software.

There were also problems with iCloud, Apple's online communications, media storage and backup service formally launched on Wednesday, with users reporting glitches such as losing their email access.

Queues in Paris were smaller than those normally seen for a brand-new iPhone, with some fans there wondering if the somewhat underwhelming introduction had put people off, but in London and elsewhere the lines were as long as ever.

On Regent Street in central London, the queue wound down a side street and into a park, where Starbucks had a mobile stand to serve coffee. Of the 40 people to whom Reuters spoke in London, 13 were switching from other phones.

“This is rubbish,” one buyer at a north London store said, holding his Blackberry after owner Research in Motion struggled for days to fix an international outage of its email and messaging services.

JOBS SHADOW OVER iPHONE LAUNCH

The vast majority of the iPhone 4S buyers who Reuters interviewed in Sydney, France and Frankfurt were existing Apple customers, many having bought the original iPhone and subsequent upgrades.

“Since Jobs died, I wanted to make sure I had a new iPhone with some advantages over the old,” said iPhone devotee Mark Du, who expressed concern about future gadgets without Jobs in charge.

Apple fans in Sydney, Tokyo, Frankfurt and London made sure Jobs was part of the iPhone 4S launch, with flower, candle and photo shrines to the late Apple boss erected outside stores. A black-and-white picture of Jobs in Covent Garden carried the line, “Let's make a dent in the universe.”

Underscoring the enthusiasm for the new phone, Japanese mobile carrier Softbank Corp had to temporarily stop contract applications after its computer system was overwhelmed with more requests than it had expected.

Some analysts expect fourth-quarter iPhone shipments to reach 30 million or more, almost twice as many as a year ago.

Apple's fifth-generation iPhone uses chips from Qualcomm Inc, Toshiba and a host of smaller semiconductor companies, according to repair firm iFixit, which cracked the device open on Thursday.

The iPhone — seen as the gold standard for smartphones — is Apple's highest-margin product and accounts for 40 percent of its annual revenue.

Analysts point to several factors in Apple's favor: a $199 price that matches up well with rival devices; availability promised on more than 100 carriers by the end of 2011, far more than its predecessors; and glowing reviews.

Apple shares were up 2 percent at $415.56 in early trading.

Snohomish County Business Journal: Apple raises the mobile computing bar with iOS 5

Apple raises the mobile computing bar with iOS 5

We lost one of the foremost innovators of our time to cancer last month. Steve Jobs was responsible for bringing us such iconic devices as the iPod, iPhone and the iPad. One of his legacies is the latest operating system designed to power these devices. this operating system, called iOS 5, is raising the bar for mobile computing. your iPhone, iPad and iPod will all stay synchronized with no user interaction. Sure, if you have a Google account you can sync your calendars and contacts across multiple devices. It’s been fraught with issues such as duplicate entries and missed syncs (at least on my devices). But it’s a good system and will certainly get better and offer more features. Still, I think Apple is once again setting the gold standard for mobile computing. The most impressive feature of iOS 5 is its support for Apple’s iCloud service. Cloud computing is the latest buzzword in technology. there already are several services that allow users to share files across multiple devices (Dropbox and SugarSync to name two). however, prior to iOS 5 and iCloud, all these sharing solutions required some level of configuration or interaction to make them work. Apple’s iOS 5 does away with most — if not all — user setup. As Jobs said in one of his last public appearances, “it just works.” If you take a picture with your iPhone, it’s immediately sent to all your other devices such as your iPod, your iPad and your MacBook. Buy a song or a book and it appears on all your connected devices. The same with documents, presentations and more. The only caveat is that these devices need to be connected to the Internet in order to sync, but Internet connections are almost ubiquitous.this operating system is designed for mobile devices, and it’s obvious. Imagine having your iPhone remind you to pick up milk when you drive by the store. how about your phone reminding you to call home when you leave work? Location-based alerts are now available.you will be able to configure what alerts you receive and how you receive them. most alerts on mobile devices pop up on top of whatever you’re doing and must either be dealt with immediately or dismissed. Now you will be presented with a discreet alert that can be opened at your convenience.Messaging gets a makeover as well. Say goodbye to text messaging charges between you and other iOS 5 users. with a WiFi or 3G connection you can securely share text, photos and video with others. The connection is encrypted. The conversation is even carried on across all your iOS 5 devices — iPhone, iPod and iPad.Another of my favorite features is Newsstand. until now, if you’ve subscribed to magazines or journals, getting the latest issue has required you to log into one or more apps and wait for issues to download. Now Newsstand keeps all your subscriptions in one place on your home screen and updates them in the background. you can subscribe to new publications easily with a familiar Apple interface. Finally, Apple’s Safari mobile browser is even better. it offers tabbed browsing, which allows you to quickly navigate between pages in multiple windows. Open links and videos by simply tapping them. you cap tap an article to bring up only the text and leave the ads and other clutter behind.Mobile computing is now much easier for the average user. Once consumers start catching on to this, I’m betting that Apple is going to see a substantial increase in profits in Q4 of this year and beyond. and for 2012? look for the iPad 3 and iPhone 5. A Frayed Knot for Apple's Power Cord Fix

A class action lawsuit has forced Apple to start a cord replacement program for frayed Macbook power adapters — something frustrated Mac owners would have appreciated years ago. As of this week, Apple will replace adapters that have shown, "signs of strain relief," which Apple defines as "a condition where the DC cable (the thin cord that attaches the MagSafe connector to the power adapter) separates from the end of the MagSafe connector or from the other end of the thin cord." Apple has a lenient example pictured above, but many owners of a worn cords know the problem can get much worse than that. No matter how ragged, whether under warranty or not, Apple will replace the defective cords, as long as it doesn't look accident related. But considering how susceptible Apple's cords are to fray, this "courtesy" would have been much appreciated before many people already bought $80.00 replacements.

Frayed Apple power cords have plagued Mac users for years. And not just the worn "T-style" Macbook cord Apple uses as its example. Macbook, Powerbook, iPhone, iPad, and iPod chargers all have been susceptible to fraying after regular usage habits. And before now, Apple didn't replace the cords after the one-year warranty expired, which was extraordinarily frustrating for people whose cords just stopped working. "This is clearly a design flaw," wrote Tavie, a frustrated Mac user on an Apple forum for disgruntled cord owners. "I went through 5 power cords on my iBook over the 4 years I had it, and no, I didn't mistreat them and was always very careful. At $80 a pop, that's a lot to shell out for a power cord." other broken cord members joined him on the Apple forums to wallow in their sorrows. But the only solution at the time was an $80 power cord.

But now Apple wants to make amends years later (yes, this writer has already purchased a $80 replacement) after many of the frayed cords were tossed. the class action lawsuit claims that Apple might reimburse owners some amount of money. But there's no mention of said payouts on the Apple website. there is a bit of good news though, apparently Apple's newest cords shouldn't fray, explains TechCrunch's Jordan Crook. "if you’re a more recent Mac convertee and own the L-shaped MagSafe charger, no worries," he assures. "You shouldn’t have the same fraying issues."

Android Apps Q&A: Is it cool to buy an iPhone 3Gs but use a prepaid SIM card?

Hey- I was in the U.S. last year with my unlocked and jailbroken 3GS, and for awhile, I had no problem with a pre-paid ATT card – and they also had a data plan which was not so expensive. But then, the Edge started not working, so I just used it with the Wi-Fi at home and in Starbucks, and cafes, etc. so, then I switched to a T-Mobile pre-paid but with no data plan – but there were no limited features, otherwise. another thing – where I live now, a disadvantage of the iPhone is that you get charged for Internet even though EDGE is turned off and you dont even have a data plan. I had to download BossPrefs from Cydia to toggle it off. then BossPrefs was superseded by SBSettings – but I still could not toggle off Edge – so I went back to BossPrefs. it must be a common problem or they wouldn’t have these programs. where I live now there are cheap data plans for pre-pays, but you have to monitor your Internet usage so you don’t go over the package limit or the price goes way up. anyway, check out SBSettings – there’s a ton of cool things you can configure your jailbroken iPhone with that program. Also, in the links below there is a discussion on how they have fixed the toggle data off in SBSettings.
