Create Great Images With iPhone Photo Apps

On a long drive this summer, I was getting kind of bored, so I started fooling around with my phone. I decided to download some different photo apps and take some pictures of the scenery. A few of the apps were a very pleasant surprise and I got some outstanding photos. What started as a time waster turned into a fun record of the trip.

These photo apps can make taking photos with your iPhone more fun. Expand your creativity with the ability to use different light, interesting effects, mimic other types of cameras and play with the photos after you take them. I like taking several pictures of the same scene or person using different apps and different settings. Here’s a rundown of a few of my favorites:

Hipstamatic this app sets the iPhone camera so it mimics other types of cameras. my favorite selection is the setting that takes pictures that look like the Kodak Instamatic, a camera popular in the sixties. the small bordered pictures tend to have a yellowish tinge that enhances brighter colors that occur in the centre of the frame. it has a flash setting that enhances light in darker conditions. One problem with the iPhone camera is that it does not do well in low light. I was in a club recently that was quite dark but was able to snap some photos of friends using the Hipstamatic app.

Toy Camera the name of this app misleads the user. it is fun, but it is more sophisticated than the name implies. the app adds a filtering effect and different film types that work together to create different light and color effects. I found it particularly good for taking pictures of landscapes to bring out the effects of sunlight on objects, sunset and twilight glows and misty conditions. on a long drive through the mountains recently, I took about forty pictures with using this app. Some of my favorite pictures from tha trip were among those I took with this app.

Cartoon Studio there are many times when adding a caption to a photo would help to tell the story. this app allows you to edit photos by adding cartoon type text balloons. it also allows you to add characters and settings to your photos to create unique mashups. the cartoon balloons don’t have to be funny. it can be a quick and easy way to add text comments to help remind you of the time and place where the photo was taken.

Jackson Pollock the free wheeling splatters of paint made Jackson Pollock famous. the app makes it look like you are splattering paint on a blank canvas when you touch the screen of the iPhone. you can also load photos and add abstract effects on your photos. this app is fun therapy and can make time go by fast when you are waiting in line.

There are probably thousands of other apps that take and make photos, but out of the ones I have tried so far, these are my favorite. the cost is reasonable.

REVIEW: Philips Sonicare DiamondClean electric toothbrush

Name: Philips Sonicare DiamondClean

Type: Electric Toothbrush

Specs: Click here for full specs

Price: £250

Can you covet a toothbrush? That’s a question Philips are hoping to answer with a resounding “YES” with their latest electric brush, the Sonicare DiamondClean. Packed full of teeth-tidying features, it’s about as techy as a toothbrush is ever going to get, and as expensive too. But is it worth the £250 asking price? Read on to find out.

Though far thicker and a good inch longer than your average manual toothbrush, the DiamondClean is an attractive bit of kit, in so far at least as a toothbrush can ever be attractive. With an oblong handle that features a power/mode select button and an illuminated display to indicate which of the brush’s five cleaning modes you’re currently using (as well as battery charge levels), it tapers off at the neck into a thin, slightly angled head. it feels a little heavy in the hand, but never uncomfortably so, with much of the weight likely made up of the motor system inside and the impressive rechargeable lithium-polymer battery, which is good for 3 weeks of regular usage from a single overnight charge. the brush head (of which two are included) snap satisfyingly on and off, making it easy to hygienically share the DiamondClean with your partner providing you each grab your own head piece.

The DiamondClean looks great on a bathroom shelf, and that’s not least of all down to some premium extras thrown in. as well as the brush itself, heads and charging cables, the DiamondClean package also includes an eye-catching silver travel case and a nicely cut glass tumbler with a silver base unit that it rests in.

There’s more than meets the eye with these two add-ons however, as both are used to wirelessly charge the DiamondClean. using an inductive charging system similar to that found in Powermat chargers, simply placing the brush into the glass resting on the base unit (with the base unit plugged into a wall socket) charges the DiamondClean. With the green-lined travel case, it’s a similar principle, lying the toothbrush down inside rather than standing it up, and connecting the case via a USB connection on a PC or laptop to charge the brush. Though it may initially sound silly, the USB support is actually a nifty addition; anyone who regularly works while travelling on trains or planes will be able to conveniently charge the brush at the same time.

If you’ve only ever used a manual toothbrush, how clean your teeth feel after using the DiamondClean will be a revelation. your teeth feel remarkably polished and genuinely “squeaky clean” afterwards. It’s a strange sensation using the brush at first, causing your teeth to vibrate in a peculiar way, but Philips have cleverly designed the DiamondClean to ramp up the intensity of the cleaning cycle progressively after your first few brushes, letting you get used to the way the brush works gradually. if, once the DiamondClean has hit its regular level of cleaning intensity, you still find it too much, you can choose the gentle “Sensitive” mode instead.

There are 5 cleaning modes programmed altogether in the DiamondClean (Clean, White, Polish, Gum Care, Sensitive), each designed to focus on a particular cleaning process. However, apart from the light touch of the “Sensitive” option, we felt little difference between the modes apart from cycle lengths, and generally stuck with the default “Clean” setting which got the job done fine.

On the “Clean” setting, the DiamondClean uses a 2 minute “Smartimer”, automatically switching off after you’ve brushed for the recommended 120 seconds. this particular timer takes it a little further though, stopping the motor for a split-second at 30 second intervals to help you better judge when to move onto a new area in your mouth. It’s a great way of making sure you’ve brushed each area equally, and for the recommended length of time, considering both over and under-brushing can be just as damaging to the health of your teeth.

For all its bells and whistles though, at the end of the day the most important part of the DiamondClean is whether or not it has the ability to give you a Hollywood smile. And, after around three week’s use (give or take a day) I’ve noticed my teeth look notably whiter. the small, pointed head lets you easily get into the nooks and crannies between your teeth, and while I’ve never suffered from gum disease to know whether or not the DiamondClean has made them feel any healthier, the brush has certainly done a good job of keeping the fleshier parts of my mouth feeling fresh too.

Verdict:

OK, so no matter how hard you try, it’s never going to be easy to get all that excited about a toothbrush. But credit where it’s due, Philips have managed to “tech-up” the humble gnasher polisher into an attractive package that’s made a genuine improvement to the sparkle of Tech Digest’s pearly whites.

The DiamondClean is to toothbrushes what the iPhone is to smartphones. it looks great, has a solid battery, travels well and cleans teeth almost as well as my dentist. Is it drastically better than cheaper alternatives? perhaps not, but it still impresses with a rich feature list that rivals just cant offer. if money is no option (and you’re hoping to be munching on steak with your own set of molars well into your old age) then the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean is for you.

5/5

iPhone 4S on Sprint “slow,” customers complain

You get what you pay for? Maybe, or maybe not.

Computerworld is reporting that customers who bought the iPhone 4S with Sprint Nextel’s 2 year contract agreement and data plan complain about the wireless carrier’s slow data speed. The report adds that Sprint iPhone 4S customers now consider returning the device and canceling the bundled plan before Friday to avoid the $350 early termination fee. it is worth noting that customers who bought the iPhone 4S last Friday, October 14, will be covered by the 14-day return policy until Friday only.

Sprint customers complain about slow iPhone 4S data connectivity.

Sprint Nextel is the newest wireless carrier in United States that offers the iPhone (iPhone 4S all variants, and the 8GB iPhone 4), and also the only carrier that offers unlimited data connectivity.

Complaints of slow iPhone 4S network performance first appeared on the carrier’s consumer forum on Oct. 14, the launch date of the iPhone 4S in United States. Customers reportedly complain about Sprint’s network speeds were “too slow” to support Youtube, Google Maps, including Apple iPhone 4S’s exclusive voice command feature Siri. For starters, Siri requires internet connection to work, and faster internet connection will deliver faster Siri response.

Meanwhile, The Next Web has confirmed in a report that Apple and Sprint Nextel are now working together to fix the iPhone 4S data connectivity issue. The source of the report was the internal email issued by Sprint saying that they’re now working with the computer company to fix the “confirmed nationwide issue” regarding the iPhone 4S’s slow data speeds.

Based on reports and comments posted online by Sprint iPhone 4S customers, the average data speed is around 0.10Mbps (around 100KB) to 0.40Mbps (or around 400KB) download, and around 0.11Mbps upload or 112.64KB after conversion.

iPhone 4S is the first iPhone to support both GSM and CDMA (as one variant). Sprint and Verizon Wireless use CDMA, while AT&T supports GSM 3G bands. AT&T claims they offer the fastest iPhone 4S data speed, with reports saying that AT&T iPhone 4S delivers 2 to 5Mbps download. we also tested Verizon’s data speed (in new York) and saw a decent 1.5 to 2Mbps download speed.

Bible App Named No. 1 ‘Coolest Book App’ by USA Today

A media-rich interactive Bible, Glo – the purported first of its kind – has been called “one of the most impressive book apps available” by USA Today among other noteworthy apps like “David’s Diary” by author David Sedaris and “1,000 Places to see before you Die” by Patricia Schultz.

“Our team is honored to receive this endorsement by USA Today and is thrilled to have been selected as the top pick on the list,” said Nelson Saba, CEO of Immersion Digital, which created Glo.

“it reaffirms our belief that rich media integrated with text enhances the understanding and engagement of the reader by combining the more analytical reading process with related immersive media experiences.”

Glo makes the Bible relevant and engaging to users by bringing the text of Scripture alive through HD video, high-res images, zoomable maps, 360-degree virtual tours, customizable Bible reading plans, and a natural user interface for fast, easy, visual navigation on the Mac, PC, iPad and iPhone.

The free Glo Bible App launched earlier this year and was recently updated with the Glo Atlas lens. the lens links geographic locations directly to Bible verses, articles and Glo media over a zoomable atlas, giving context to Bible stories or time periods.

Christian publisher Zondervan partnered with Immersion Digital, a technology and media company founded in 2008, for the creation of the Glo Bible App.

Chip Brown, senior vice president and publisher of Bibles for Zondervan said in a statement, “Consumer reaction to both the packaged product and the App has been phenomenal and helps Zondervan advance our mission to increase Bible engagement.”

“Zondervan has been a great partner of ours and we believe the fact that Glo features the bestselling NIV translation, which is the dominant preferred translation choice of consumers, has contributes to its success,” Saba added.

The CEO of Immersion Digital, once the vice president of technology for International Private Banking at Citibank, believes that tools like GLO would enable people to engage in and know Christ in the new digital generation.

Having previously created iLumina, an interactive Bible and Encyclopedia Suite, Saba was familiar with interactive platforms, which sought to communicate Scripture in creative ways. he teamed up with Phil Chen to form Immersion Digital and created their flagship product Glo in 2009.

“Two entire generations have been born in a digital world and favor digital media over any other,” Saba stated, according to their website. “we really felt that the time was right to create a digital Bible such as GLO, designed for them, that would connect with this generation as an alternative to paper, because they don’t use it.”

“We’re not really just digitizing the Bible. we are creating a product with layers and functionality that will help make the Bible relevant and engaging to this generation.”

Chen, an ordained minister in Korea and creator of Handstand, a content service for newspapers and magazines, was inspired to create Glo after hearing a speech by the Rev. Billy Graham.

Graham had stated that the latest and best technology, design and science could not solve what Christ came to solve.

Chen was confident that the three things about human life – human suffering, human evil and human death – could not be solved through man’s greatest work but the Word of God alone.

“I believe Glo to be a technology and media company that is a steward to Christ and what Christ came to do for humankind,” the chairman shared on the site.

“Today, science, technology and design all aim to build sustainable energy, green energy, even business models that make sense for our environment and society. in the same way, Glo is a technology company designed for the human heart, the digital minister or missionary that communicates Christ in a new medium for a new century.”

Hoping to bring people closer to God through an interactive journey of the Bible, Chen noted, “Glo takes you back and brings you closer in a friendly way to help you experience the beauty and truth of the Scripture.”

“we are just as thirsty for its wisdom and richness to navigate life today. Glo further endeavors to inspire every person’s participation in the grand story.”

Evangelical Publisher’s Association named Glo 2010 Bible of the Year. already garnering much support and positive reviews, the app has been lauded by leading Christian authors and pastors like John Eldredge and Max Lucado.

Lucado considered Glo “a comprehensive Bible research tool that is a great friend to anyone who [took] the Bible seriously,” while Eldredge shared that the app helped him imagine what it would be like to be a part of the biblical world.

“I think it’s hard to those of us who live in the 21st century… to imagine what it was like when Jesus walked the earth or Paul wrote his epistles and that’s what I love about Glo because I’m reading about Antioch or Ephesus and I can click on the map and go there, I can take the interactive tour, I can look at the photos and it puts me in the context and context is crucial when it comes to understanding the meaning of Scriptures,” Eldredge, author of Wild at Heart, added.

“Over the year God has used film, arts, and media in my life to help me enter into the stories of the Scriptures, help me imagine what it was like to be there and be a part of it. and that is why I’m excited about Glo. This product …[helps] bring the Scriptures to life and helps us really enter into the truth of what God is giving to us in His Word.”

A Cool Car Finder App

iPhone apps have become a major phenomenon in our modern society. You can not go any where with seeing, hearing, or someone talking about iPhone apps. There have been many apps that have been created. Many useful, some amusing, and some entertaining. but there’s one app in particular that I have found very useful in my opinion. the app I’m referring to is called the car finder app.

This app has honestly changed my life, and I’m going to explain. Before online marketing, I worked for a local restaurant as a bus boy, and when it was time for me to go it would take me approximately 20 minutes to find my car, as time progressed I would waste precious time in looking for my car and also time in my late night studying. this would prove to be devastating. but last week I cam across this iPhone app that had me thinking about my past if I would of known about this back then.

This application provides a technology that contributes to the camera of the iPhone and uses it as a digital compass, you’ll most likely find this app on the latest iPhone such as, the 3GS and etc. With this app I was able to completely avoid all the hassle of looking for a car in huge parking lots, and many other troubling situations that may occur to anyone involved in a predicament where the words lost and Car are being used in the same sentence. this app I believe can save many people in tough situations such as: If your car has been stolen, or you probably forgot where you parked your car, or if you’ve parked in a no parking area your and the city tow trucking agency towed your car without your knowledge.

In today’s day and age every has a cell phone, but if you have an iPhone 3G, this can locate your vehicle, you can also use this app to frequently check on your vehicle, to see if it’s at the same location, you parked it at, if of course you’ve had a history of your vehicle being stolen. this app is great and I honestly recommend it to any one that is very protective of there vehicle.

Google Apologises For Gmail iPhone App Bug

It is not known when the improved mobile app will be available

12:27pm UK, Thursday November 03, 2011

The app was launched on Wednesday – but a backlash began almost immediately and the company confirmed it contained a bug.

Users saw an error message that read: “No valid ‘aps-environment’ entitlement string found for application.”

This appeared to refer to a problem with the push notifications which include displaying the number of unread messages on the app icon.

In a tweet Google said: “The iOS app we launched today contained a bug with notifications. We have pulled the app to fix the problem. sorry we messed up.”

The app was removed from the Apple iTunes store and, in a post on the Gmail blog, product manager Matthew Izatt wrote: “We’ve removed the app while we correct the problem, and we’re working to bring you a new version soon.

“Everyone who’s already installed the app can continue to use it.”

The mobile web app was designed to improve the efficiency of receiving and sending emails while on the go.

Time-saving features include being alerted to new mail with push notifications and sounds and finding emails in seconds by searching your entire inbox.

The iPad app includes a split-pane view with threaded email conversations shown on one side of the screen.

It is not known when a fixed version will be available to download again.

Tough iPhone 3G Case For Construction Workers

I work hands on in the construction industry and related fields. I faced a predicament about a year ago when I gave into the iPhone hype. I knew that there was no way I could afford to replace my new little toy if I were to break it so I did a little research on the different types of cases that were available. I finally settled on an OtterBox Defender series case. It turned out to be a pretty good decision.

My work frequently takes me to construction sites, sea ports, marinas and other harsh working environments. this has been the cause of a lot of broken cell phones in the past for me. I am constantly dropping, crushing, and exposing my phone to wet environments. this almost prevented me from buying an iPhone in the first place but in the end I couldn’t resist.

I used the phone without a case for about a week before deciding on which one to get. during this time I was forced to use my phone with wet or sweaty hands on a number of occasions and found that the touchscreen did not like this. there were a few times when I couldn’t even answer a call. this had me very worried that I had purchased a phone that just wasn’t practical for use at work. I was pleased to find that the OtterBox case solved this problem immediately. no more missed calls due to waterlogged hands or sweat.

One incident in which this case really impressed me is when I was working on top of a building in new York. I dropped my phone one and a half stories onto metal grating. I was sure my phone was trashed but when I climbed down to pick it up it was completely unharmed and the case barely had a scratch on it. the thing had paid for itself right then and there I don’t think any other iPhone case would have been able to take that kind of licking without damaging the phone inside.

After about a year of relentless abuse the case did finally give. It developed some cracks and the silicone outer shell began to tear. this gave me a great opportunity to test out the lifetime warranty offered by the company. A quick email resulted in a brand new case arriving on my doorstep within a few days.
