[Attention, experienced jailbreakers: this article describes the latest tethered JB in terms that the average user might grok. It also includes a list of my top tips to make a jailbreak go smoothly. But, y’know, feel free to vent your frustrations in the comments below — I’ve a thick skin…] 

First things first: understand the difference between a "jailbreak" and an "unlock". A jailbreak allows you to install apps from places other than Apple’s App Store. An unlock allows you to use a different cellular carrier than the one blessed by your phone, and usually requires you to jailbreak the phone first. both are perfectly legal, and jailbreaking does not encourage software piracy — no matter what Apple PR may appear to imply.

Second: understand the difference between a "tethered" and an "untethered" jailbreak. A if a jailbreak is said to be tethered, it means that the jailbreak is undone if you reboot the phone — in other words, you must connect your phone to your PC or Mac to properly boot it. An untethered jailbreak is the gold standard, because you don’t need to muck about with any of that nonsense.

At the time of writing, the jailbreak available for iOS 5 is tethered. If you don’t understand the implications of that, then go back and read the previous paragraph!

You’ll need to use a jailbreaking tool to tweak the version of iOS on your phone. You’ll want the latest version of Redsn0w (0.9.9b6, at time of writing). Some Windows users have also reported success with the Sn0wbreeze tool. You’ll also want iTunes version 10.5 and have already downloaded a copy of the iOS 5 install image (the IPSW file).

All the links for these and their detailed instructions are below, but first, here are some top tips, learned from bitter experience. Ignore them at your peril:

  • Before doing anything, back up your iPhone in iTunes.
  • Make sure you stop iTunes from automatically updating itself — A long-term fear is that Apple may introduce anti-jailbreaking code into a future iTunes update, stop that software from auto-updating.
  • Make sure you stop iTunes from automatically updating  your iPhone — iOS updates will almost always undo a jailbreak and you may find that new updates aren’t jailbreakable (at least, for a few days or weeks).
  • Plug your iPhone directly into a USB socket on your Mac or PC’s case — do not use a USB hub.
  • Unplug as many other other USB devices as you possibly can.
  • Use a genuine Apple USB cable, or a 3rd party cable that you know to be of good quality — some cheapo cables can appear to work fine for regular syncing and charging, but fail in subtle ways when jailbreaking.
  • Be patient — some of the steps involved in jailbreaking an iPhone take longer than you might think. If it appears to have hung, it probably hasn’t. Set aside plenty of time to do the jailbreak; the last thing you want to do is interrupt it mid-process.

Best Buy plugs in to home energy tech

The electronics retailer today is launching a push into home energy management products through dedicated zones at three stores and an online home energy “learning center.” The company will announce the plan at the BSR conference on corporate sustainability and begin product demos in stores Sunday.

Customers in Chicago, Houston, and San Carlos, Calif., will be able to see the latest in home energy gadgets, a class of products geared toward saving energy and remotely controlling thermostat, lights, and appliances.

At its stores, best buy will show off thermostats that can be controlled from aniPad, including the sleek Learning Thermostat from Nest Labs, and accessories for making other products more efficient, such as ThinkEco’s Modlet retrofit outlet, company executives said.

The modlet from ThinkEco is designed to cut standby power of devices, such as entertainment centers, or schedule appliances such as air conditioners.

The company will sell goods individually, including energy-efficient LED bulbs, and offer different packages, including a bundle with home security services from ADT with a remote control thermostat. General Electric’s Nucleus whole-house energy monitoring and control system will be in stores by January.

Best buy, which has spent about two years researching home energy, sees home energy technology as an extension to its traditional consumer-electronics business. The technology also complements the home energy auditing services offered by best Buy’s Geek Squad.

“There’s a real gadgety influence, and we’re seeing that come to life in the energy and control space,” said Neil McPhail, general manager of the new-business-customer solutions group at best buy. “There are real tangible benefits as you start to see your energy use, and it gets you curious how you might be able to save more.”

The three stores will serve as experiments to gauge consumer interest and whether the effort is worth rolling out more broadly. Representatives from utilities will also be available to offer information about rate plans or rebates that could be available.

Best Buy’s foray into home energy adds credibility to a new class of products that remain largely unknown to consumers.

A number of utility-led smart grid trials included the installation of a home energy “dashboard,” a small screen for viewing power in real-time and controlling connected appliances. But the primary purpose of those controls was to meet utilities’ goals of shifting power use to off-peak times.

Best buy thinks it can offer consumers a broader set of product options and help educate consumers on how they can be used, said Kris Bowring, the platform lead for home energy at best buy. The company will also offer installation services for things such as wireless thermostats or home control systems.

“Energy saving will be the minimum component,” he said. “Customers are saying, ‘Help me do different things with these devices.'”

Best buy has also been contracted by Ford to do inspections and installations for home electric vehicle charging stations. Though it doesn’t have any specific plans, best buy could well get into installing solar panels, Bowring said.

US Cellular Turned Down Opportunity to Sell the iPhone As Too Expensive

­Although most mobile networks seem at times desperate to be allowed to sell Apple's iPhone, US regional mobile network operator, US Cellular says that it turned down the offer from Apple.

The company said that the scale of the subsidy necessary to make the phone affordable was too risky.

US Cellular's CEO Mary Dillon told analysts that "the terms were unacceptable from a risk and profitability standpoint." She did however say that the company might reconsider the issue in the future.

Apple sells the handset for around US$600 per unit, but the mobile networks then subsidise them by upwards of US$400 to bring the price down and recoup the subsidy from — hoped for — mobile data usage.

The subsidy issue is a topical one, as Sprint Nextel recently revealed that it will take until 2015 to break into profit on its own iPhone sales.

The only major network in the USA not carrying the iPhone is T-Mobile, which published an open letter last month saying that they want to sell it, but Apple wont make a version that is compatible with its 3G network.

TWO crime-fighting parents have tracked down the man who had burgled their home – using the iPhone he had stolen. The Coolum couple was told they would never see up to $10,000 worth of electronics that had been stolen from their home.

Richard and Bree Hale slept through the midnight burglary, waking to find mr Hale's iPhone 4 and a swag of other belongings had been nicked. A police officer lodged a report so that the couple could claim their losses on insurance. but mr Hale realised that he could track his stolen iPhone with a locator app.

he had installed the Find My iPhone app uses the GPS capabilities of the phone to pinpoint the missing device on a map.

The morning after they were robbed, mr Hale tracked the iPhone to a Woolworths at Coolum Beach.

mr Hale raced to the supermarket and narrowed his search to a handful of car parks where he thought the stolen phone might be.

The suspect vehicle had already left and the signal was lost, presumably because the thief had turned off the phone.

it was back on by 11am.

An email alerted mrs Hale that the iPhone had been located again, this time in Maroochydore.

Google maps pinpointed it to be outside an Optus store, which mrs Hale quickly rang.

"I rang the store and they said a guy just came in trying to remove a SIM card from an iPhone," mrs Hale said. "They said 'I think he's still sitting in his car'."

The man had not left the car park.

mrs Hale asked the person on the other end of the line for a description of the suspect and the number plates of his car.

with the fresh information she phoned police.

Even with a new SIM card, the GPS could still track because it was following the phone and not the SIM card.

mr and mrs Hale watched as the criminal drove past the Maroochydore police station as they tried to convince officers they knew where their stolen goods were headed.

"The whole thing was just bizarre," mrs Hale said. "We literally just watched him driving."

The suspect headed on to the motorway back towards Coolum, where police eventually nabbed him.

The arresting officers found most of the stolen items, including an iPod and its dock, a portable DVD player, 11 DVDs, a wallet, power chords and a handbag.

mrs Hale said the man had stolen between $5000 and $10,000 worth of electronics from their home.

Leon Robert Winch, 35, was jailed for 12 months after pleading guilty to the offences this week.
