The 411: Choosing between Androids

Welcome to the 411, my column answering all your questions about cell phones and cell phone accessories. I receive plenty of questions about these subjects via e-mail, so I figured many of you might have similar queries, too. At times, I might solicit answers from readers if I’m stumped. Send your questions and comments to me at . if you prefer to remain anonymous, let me know in the e-mail.

My contract with AT&T is up and I am looking to upgrade my phone and contract out for two more years. I currently have theiPhone4, 3G. it is just fine but the battery life is terrible. In this order are my needs:1. Battery life!2. I use the phone almost exclusively for e-mail.3. big buttons because i have big fingers (I can’t push just one buttonon a BlackBerry…). My mom got the HTC Inspire last week. I like the big size. — Mike, via e-mail

We’ll be blunt: most smartphones tend to have battery life of about a day’s worth of average use. By which we mean the usual checking of e-mail, browsing the Web, listening to music, and occasional use of GPS for mapping software. Usage can fluctuate depending on how much you use power-intensive applications, and you can try to save battery life by turning off the screen when not in use, or making sure you’re not running power-intensive applications in the background (GPS-dependent apps are notorious for sucking up battery life). It’s very rare for a smartphone to last longer than a whole day, however. we actually think the iPhone 4’s battery life is pretty decent when compared with most smartphones out there, so we just want you to set your expectations appropriately.

With that said, I do think there are a few options for you to look at. since you said you like the HTC Inspire, I assume when you say “big buttons” you mean a virtual keyboard, not a physical keyboard. Indeed, the HTC Inspire is a good option if you like large phones with decent battery life.

I would also encourage you to look at the Samsung Infuse 4G and the Motorola Atrix 4G if you want to stick with AT&T. For T-Mobile, I like the Samsung Galaxy S 4G and the T-Mobile G2X, and I’ve heard good things about the Motorola Droid X2 from Verizon Wireless.

if you can wait a little longer for the Samsung Galaxy S II to arrive on our shores, that’s one of my favorite newAndroid phones too. Certainly feel free to shop around!

Quick phone question for you. Which phone should I choose on Sprint around September? Evo 3D: “like Sense think 3D is a waste.” Nexus S 4G: “getting a little old but love the screen.” Photon 4G “I don’t like Blur and could have a locked boot loader.” HTC Kingdom?new Samsung phone that is in Sprint’s road map? — David, via e-mail

Since I can’t speak about the unreleased phones (the Photon 4G, the Kingdom, and the new Samsung phones have yet to launch in the U.S.), I can only offer you my opinion of the Evo 3D versus the Nexus S 4G. Like you, I’m not a huge fan of 3D, but the HTC Evo 3D is actually a pretty excellent Android phone even if you don’t care about 3D. we also really like the display, and the Sense user interface is one of the better manufacturer skins out there.

the Nexus S 4G does have a slightly more compact body, with its curved shape and smaller size. we also like that it has Vanilla Android, so it’s easier to update. however, the Nexus S 4G has had some WiMax problems recently, with Sprint hopefully rolling out an update to fix that in the near future. I would probably opt for the Evo if you like the Sense UI, and opt for the Nexus S 4G if you like the smaller form factor. Either way, definitely see if you can check them out in the store or at least be sure your local store has a good return policy.

With all the buzz about Gingerbread coming to the U.S., do you know when the Samsung Epic 2 will arrive? do you think it’s worth waiting for or will the Epic 4G be upgraded from 2.2 to 2.3? — Di, via e-mail

I think you’re referring to the Samsung Epic 2, which has been rumored as a successor to the Samsung Epic 4G for Sprint. it might indeed have Android 2.3, but we really don’t know a lot about it at this point. as for the Epic 4G, I have heard that Sprint might be releasing an Android 2.3 update for that soon, but again, we don’t have any official word about it. however, I have seen a few online sites that have managed to load Android 2.3 on their Epic 4Gs already (albeit with a few complications, like WiMax not working), so it’s possible that it can be done. All I can suggest to you is to stay tight and see what develops in the next few months!

Lion makes it easy to join free Wi-Fi hotspots with landing pages, like those at Starbucks and McDonald’s (often offered by AT&T in the US and BT OpenZone in the UK). Technology baked into OS X Lion eliminates the need to use a browser to pass a landing page that stands between you and the Internet.

when you join such a network with Lion, a Finder window will open when Lion detects the landing page’s request to accept the network’s terms and conditions. you can accept the T&C right from the Finder window (which even offers backwards and forwards browsing buttons) and get connected, all without ever opening your browser. The process is even faster if you’ve joined that particular free AT&T or BT Openzone wireless network before. If so, your MacBook will automatically join it when you open its lid and the Finder window will pop-up automatically, allowing you to get past the landing page and get connected in one step.

The no-browser way to access free Wi-Fi networks with landing pages is a small feature, sure, but its another one of those little touches that make Lion worthwhile and that makes a Mac a Mac.

Infographic: The Rise and Rise of Mobile Gaming

Mobile game development is among the fastest-growing avenues to the big bucks in technology today, as highlighted by this infographic from Geekaphone.

Consider these numbers: Mobile gaming industry revenue is projected to reach $8 billion this year, and that figure is expected to soar to $11.4 billion by 2014. Games are the runaway leader in terms of numbers of downloads of paid-for apps on Apple’s iPhone App Store, according to Distimo’s latest study, with games accounting for a whopping 72 percent of all downloads of the top 300 most popular apps there.

But mobile gaming is a tough nut to crack for developers. just ten game publishers account for more than half of all downloads of the top 300 iPhone paid games.

the success stories are easy to track. There’s Rovio, creator of the runaway hit Angry Birds. And PopCap Games, which was recently acquired by EA for a cool $750 million. then there’s social gaming giant Zynga, lurking with a new-found focus on mobile gaming and soon to bring FarmVille public.

Also consider the growth of “freemium” mobile games, free gaming apps that generate revenue via advertising and in-game purchasing. some 35 percent of the 300 most popular iPhone games now use some kind of virtual currency within the game for monetization purposes, Distimo found. Revenue from in-game purchases is projected to reach $11 billion by 2015, according to Geekaphone’s sources.

And there’s one metric that sets mobile gaming apart from the rest of the gaming industry&#151it’s very nearly gender neutral. some 53 percent of mobile gamers are female, a revelation to those accustomed to the heavy testosterone skew in console and PC gaming circles.

Reviews: Speck ToughShell for iPhone 4

It’s pretty clear after handling ToughShell that this new case—released more than a year after the only iPhone that sits inside—was one of those challenging, “keep on tweaking ‘til we get it right” designs. It’s considerably more advanced than Speck’s earlier ToughSkin which effectively added a thick rubber cover to a simple plastic snap-on interior frame. Here, a hinged two-piece hard plastic case is held together and gasketed with a thick, ribbed rubber edge, capable of covering all of the iPhone 4’s buttons, ports, and switches, while permitting limited access to the latter two through flip-open rubber pieces. It’s really tough to get to the side switch unless you have very skinny fingers, but for users who want tons of protection, the extra rubber is appreciated.

ToughShell’s plastic is rather thick and feels particularly nice. It covers the whole of the back, as well as the front bezel. There are very well-tailored holes for both cameras, the ambient light sensor, and earpiece, as well as a rubber cover over the Home button. a little more pressure is required to press the Home button than normal, but not much. like most cases that come all the way up to the edge of the screen, we found typing with two thumbs to be somewhat more difficult, and it may wind up being harder to access Notification Center on the upcoming iOS 5 without room to swipe from the top. also included with ToughShell are a piece of screen protector film and a rotating belt clip that can double as a viewing stand; both are unremarkable, but as extras, they’re welcome.

Whereas ToughShell is fused together into one inseparable unit, BullFrog is comprised of two distinctly separate layers. the first is a hard plastic slider-style case that’s lined with a soft, velvety material. while iFrogz claims that this core can be used separately, it’s doesn’t look or feel great on its own, and we wouldn’t recommend it. the rubber is a different story. while certainly thicker, it feels much more complete, and the ribbed-edge outer layer stays in place via strategically placed pegs around the edges of the plastic frame.

There are dedicated covers for the Sleep/Wake and volume buttons, as well as flip-open covers for the headphone and Dock Connector ports. unlike ToughShell, BullFrog doesn’t incorporate any sort of protector over the side switch. It is, however, much easier to access. Much like Speck’s case, there is significant protection around the glass touchscreen display. There’s a combined opening for the earpiece and front-facing camera, another for the ambient light sensor, and a Home button cover that’s a lot easier to press.

Arguably the most unique feature in BullFrog is the plastic sliding cover that can protect the rear camera and flash. the overall opening is about an inch and a quarter long, with the actual slider coming in at a little bit more than half an inch. Ideally, it slides with just a little bit of pressure to reveal the camera when it’s needed. in our testing, however, it was very difficult to get it out of the closed position—pretty much impossible without wedging a fingernail in and really forcing it. even when freed, it did not move very smoothly at all. It’s a good feature on paper that’s less than satisfying in practice.

For $35, BullFrog is otherwise a real value; it’s the least expensive case we’ve seen in the ultraprotective category. no, it doesn’t include a belt clip, but that’s an accessory we barely see in use these days anyway, and similarly, while the case certainly doesn’t feel cheap, it falls short only when compared to considerably more expensive cases such as ToughShell. while the lack of side switch coverage isn’t a big deal when compared to the rest of the case’s protectiveness, the camera cover may be a problem for some users. With the cover left in the open position, BullFrog is as protective as most iPhone 4 cases, but when it’s closed, it can be hard to open in time to grab that important shot. the so-so implementation of a useful feature brings an otherwise great case down to a “very good” B+ rating.

On the other hand, ToughShell feels more polished, but at $50, it’s also more expensive. We really liked the use of the hinged design, the nice integration of different materials, and pretty remarkable coverage. the only notable downside is the fact that it’s rather difficult to access the side switch, and by reference to the same-priced OtterBox and Griffin’s cases, it relies upon film rather than integrated screen coverage. as between Defender, Survivor, and ToughShell, we’d call it a draw: all three cases are worthy of B+ rating. If you’re looking for the one the feels best in your hand, that distinction goes to ToughShell. Defender is sleekest of the bunch, and Survivor has the most rugged aesthetic, plus camera protection. in deciding between them, it really comes down to personal preference.

Rumored iPhone 5 spotted in the wild? – iPhone app article – Phil Hornshaw

The rumor mill went crazy today after some images of what a tipster thought was the iPhone 5 being used in the wild made their way to 9to5Mac.

The images, captured on a train from San Francisco earlier this week, show a man using a smartphone that seems to match the description gleaned from rumors and anonymous sources of Apple’s (AAPL) upcoming iPhone update, known colloquially as the iPhone 5. 9to5Mac published the photos along with the tipster’s words, which were that he’d seen the phone up close and believed it to be an iPhone 5, although the pictures “didn’t do it justice.”

Unfortunately, the images aren’t very clear, but the tipster said that a story about silicone cases for the iPhone 5 made him believe that what he had seen was, in fact, the iPhone 5. after seeing photos of the cases at 9to5Mac, the tipster said he recognized what he’d seen as the iPhone 5, being an iPhone 4 owner, and said the cases would fit the device he saw perfectly.

For its part, 9to5Mac said it vetted the tipster, checking his background after receiving the information, and that he checked out. The tipster said the iPhone 5 had a screen akin to the HTC EVO, making it larger than the current iPhone screen, and that the device was both thinner and wider than the current crop of iPhones. The device had what was likely to be a curved, tapered glass back panel and curved metal edges that could function as an antenna.

The photos seem to display what could be an Apple logo, which the man in the photo apparently worked hard to conceal the majority of the time. The tipster and 9to5Mac seem to think the device in the photo is too thin to be an iPhone 3GS, too curved to be an iPhone 4 and precluded from being an iPod touch by its coloring.

It’s possible that real-world testing of the iPhone 5 really is taking place in the photo, but the quality of the photos makes it hard to be sure. Apple surely wants to avoid another issue like the “antennagate” fiasco that occurred when the iPhone 4 came out, so testing in such a manner as this makes sense. Whether you believe the photos really do show an iPhone 5 is up to you, but at the very least, these photos offer a bit of compelling Apple fodder to think about going into the weekend.

Your Data Isn't Safe (Even With Cell Phone Privacy Protection Plans)

Your smart phone is a portable personal data machine that records your every move. That's scary. For one, it's easy to lose and for thieves to re-sell. and that's just the phone itself. if the servers that hold all the information it collects are ever hacked, your data could end up in someone else's hands, too. that may also happen without any malicious interventions: You're allowing mobile companies to collect your information and share it with advertisers (or really, anyone), and you might not even realize it. As discovered last spring, the iPhone tracks your every move and sends it to Apple headquarters.

As smart phones increase in popularity–36 percent of consumers in the United States will use mobile Internet services by 2015 reports Vega–privacy protection will only increase in importance. the current methods are just baby steps, says Senator Al Franken the chairman of the Senate Judiciary subcommittee on privacy, technology and the law, who has proposed legislation to require cell companies to obtain consent before collecting data. "Recent efforts to increase the availability of mobile privacy policies, like Mr. Brock’s policy generator, 'is a good first step in informing consumers,'" Senator Franken said in an e-mail to New York Times reporter Tanzina Vega. "but it alone will not address the majority of privacy threats that consumers face on their mobile devices." given the myriad privacy concerns mobile phones present, companies are beginning to devise ways to protect customers. Yet if you want to safeguard information from one evil source, you might have to give it up to another.

Data Security: For those who want to secure all that important information you store on your phone, there are various services you can use for protection. McAfee has recently launched an anti-theft iPhone application, reports VentureBeat's Dean Takahashi. "with WaveSecure, users can back up contacts, photos, and videos as well as remotely track the location of their iPhones via the McAfee WaveSecure online portal. Users can wirelessly restore their contacts, even to an Android device. if the device is lost, stolen, or damaged–or if the user accidentally deletes data–consumers can get their data back. " this software joins competitor Lookout Mobile Security, which offers anti-virus protection, online back-up and remote tracking of lost phones. Apple also has a service, MobileMe's find my iPhone, for tracking and protecting a lost or stolen phone.

and if you just want more security, the SafeBox app protects phones from unauthorized access, letting you encrypt text messages, create a secret phonebook, and store confidential information.

Protects you from: Losing your phone, thieves. These services protect the private information on your phone, allowing you to backup and store your data somewhere else, so you can not only recover the information, but you can track your stolen device. they also protect from certain viruses.

still vulnerable to:  Hackers, advertisers. McAfee and Lookout Mobile come in handy if you've lost or misplaced your device, but they too present the exact problems you're trying to avoid: you give all your personal data to a company. Nor do they address any other privacy concerns–your cell phone still stores a slew of personal information that advertisers use. and while Mobile me helps a user track down their phone, the thief who stole the device can disable the app pretty easily, explains CNET's Josh Lowensohn. "they can also perform a software wipe right on the phone, which means your data gets erased, however that means you can no longer track where it is without carrier intervention."

Data Sharing Limitations: Instead of helping users back up data, certain companies help prevent you from giving up your info in the first place with simpler, more visible, privacy policies, like, PrivacyChoice, for example, reports the New York Times' Tanzina Vega.

using the data collected from hundreds of online privacy policies, Mr. Brock and his team devised a tool to help mobile application developers create basic policies without the help of a lawyer. Developers who want to use the tool can select answers to basic questions about how they collect data, how that data is used and whether it can be deleted.

the newest Apple iOS also stops the iPhone from backing up location data on your computer and deletes the data when Location Services is turned off.

Protects you from: Confusion on how companies will use your data. the idea is increased transparency: you know what you're sharing and because you're informed you can opt out. if you can understand a privacy policy, you might not give up personal information. and for iPhone users: you can prevent Apple from documenting your every move.

still vulnerable to: Thieves, loss, and hackers. sure, this helps users understand what kind of information they might store on their phone or give to advertisers, but you inevitably will want to use certain location driven applications (like, Yelp or Maps), this doesn't really do anything to protect that information.

Game sales hit lowest point since October 2006

Xbox 360 is the no. 1 console again, according to NPD.

(Credit:Microsoft)

The video game industry suffered a serious blow across the physical retail channel last month, NPD reported yesterday.

According to the research firm, industrywide sales on hardware, peripherals, and software hit $707.7 million in July, down 26 percent compared to the same month last year when the industry generated $961.3 million in sales.

Last month, the industry saw sales hit their lowest point since October 2006, NPD analyst Anita Frazier said in a statement.

Hardware revenue was especially disappointing last month, reaching only $223 million. That figure was down 29 percent compared to July 2010 when hardware companies generated $313.8 million in revenue.

Frazier said that “the average selling price for console hardware was essentially flat to last year,” but overall, there was “a decrease in unit sales,” causing the decline.

Microsoft was especially affected by that decline. although the company’sXbox 360 beat out theWii andPlayStation 3 for control of the console market with 277,000 units sold in July, the company experienced its first year-over-year sales decline since December 2009. However, Frazier doesn’t believe that drop is cause for concern.

The decline “is more of a reflection of robust sales last July, which was the biggest month for unit sales of the 360 in 2010 outside the holiday months (November and December),” Frazier said. “Last year’s sales of the 360 hardware platform were driven by the introduction of the Kinect-ready slim form factor SKU.”

Related stories:• U.S. video game industry sales continue slide• Analyst: Game console sales plummeted in June• NPD data on digital sales of games to go monthly

Neither Sony nor Nintendo announced what their unit sales were on the month. Sony did, however, comment on its PlayStation move peripheral, saying that its sales were up 18 percent year over year.

That said, total game accessories sales were down 8 percent from $138.1 million last year to $127.8 million last month.

Nintendo did not immediately respond to CNET’s request for comment on how it fared in July.

On the software side, sales were down 17 percent from $403.3 million last year to $336.2 million this year. According to NPD, NCAA Football 12 scored the top spot in game sales in July, followed by Cars 2 and call of Duty: Black Ops. Lego Pirates of the Caribbean: the Video Game came in fourth, while Just Dance 2 for the Wii took the fifth spot.

However, the research firm’s reports on software should be taken with a grain of salt. NPD’s monthly report only included physical sales, which means all the digital game content sold, including full games and add-ons, is not included in this report. Earlier this year, Frazier said that digital sales now account for 40 percent of game sales.

Game publisher Electronic Arts has been especially outspoken about the impact digital sales are having on the industry. Earlier this year, an EA representative said that NPD’s decision to leave digital sales out of its monthly reports is like “measuring music sales and ignoring something called iTunes.”

Frazier acknowledged the importance of digital content in a statement yesterday, saying that digital sales will actually help push the game industry up by the end of this year, even though physical sales could continue to slide.

“We have measured some remarkable growth in other ways that consumers are acquiring content, including digital sales of full games and add-on content, mobile games, and social network gaming,” Frazier said. “Growth in these areas, combined with a flat to modest decline in new physical sales should result in 2011 showing growth over 2010.”

Looking at August, NPD isn’t seeing better times ahead for one major reason: Madden. the wildly popular football game accounted for 28 percent of retail software sales last August. but this year, the game isn’t coming out until August 30, which means its impact won’t be felt until September.
