Question: I currently have the LG Optimus V, and am looking to switch phones. my friends all have BlackBerrys, and I was thinking about getting the Bold 9930. my question is, what happens if RIM goes under while I still am still under contract? what do you think the chances of that are? thank you so much. — Luke, via e-mail

Many industry professionals are skeptical about RIM’s longevity (including us), so you’re right to be cautious about it. still, I wouldn’t be too pessimistic. In the event that RIM goes under, your contract will be unaffected since your contract is not with the manufacturer, but with the carrier. so from that perspective, you’re free to get a BlackBerry if you want. And who knows, RIM might find a way to redeem itself. The company still has many loyal BlackBerry fans.

That said, you still might not want to get the current crop of BlackBerrys. The latest BlackBerrys run on BlackBerry 7 OS, which is certainly an improvement over previous iterations, but RIM has already announced that it will be moving to its next-generation operating system (QNX, which already powers the Playbook) next year. if you get a new BlackBerry now, you might be stuck with an outdated OS about halfway through your contract. if you’re OK with that, sure, go ahead and get one. But just make sure you’ve considered all your options before taking the two-year-contract plunge.

Hello! I just read your World Phone Guide and found if very helpful, though I do have a question, of sorts. I live in the U.S. and will be studying abroad for 10 months in Ghana. I want to get a plan that will allow me to call and text the friends I make in Ghana regularly, but also have some freedom calling my friends and boyfriend at home. I was thinking of getting andiPhone (though that choice is flexible) and putting a Ghana SIM card in it. Then I would pay for a data plan and use Skype’s fairly cheap minutes when I wanted to call people in the U.S. when I’m away from my laptop. It seemed like a workable plan to me; I guess my question would be if it has any flaws that my not-so-technologically inclined brain is missing. thanks for any advice you have, and feel free to direct my question elsewhere, if you wish 🙂 — Emily, via e-mail

You can certainly get an iPhone or anything you like to put a Ghana SIM card in it. However, you have to make sure the phone is unlocked. that means getting a phone that is not tied down to any carrier. you should also make sure the phone supports quad-band GSM bands (850/900/1800/1900 MHz), and that it supports the 3G network in Ghana, which I presume are the 850/1900 MHz bands.

The unlocked version of the AT&T iPhone would certainly work in this case, but so would any quad-band phone that supports those particular frequencies. unfortunately, I have no knowledge of how much data plans cost in Ghana, and whether making Skype calls would be more affordable in the long run. my hunch is that it would be cheaper, but hopefully our readers would have more insight on that front. please leave a comment if you know how to help Emily!

I am currently an AT&T customer and for the past few months I have been closed-minded to any phone other than the Samsung Infuse. with all of the news of the Nexus S coming to the carrier on July 24, and rumors of the Samsung Galaxy S II coming to AT&T on July 31 would it be wise to stick with getting the Infuse or wait to see what other options may soon become available? — jtechie, via e-mail

In terms of specs, the Infuse 4G does support AT&T’s 4G network while the Nexus S does not, so that tips the scales in favor of the Infuse. As for the Galaxy S II, its features are largely the same as the Infuse, so your preference will have to come down to size. We’re not sure if the AT&T version of the Galaxy S II will be substantially different design-wise, but when compared with the Galaxy S II, the Infuse is quite large with its 4.5-inch display. if you prefer the larger screen of the Infuse 4G, then I say go ahead and get it.

UPDATE: thanks to a few of our reader comments, we were reminded that the Galaxy S II does have a dual-core processor while the Infuse 4G does not. even though we’re not sure if the AT&T version of the device will have the same specs, it might be a good idea to wait and see how that shakes out before investing in anything.

Apple plans to prune iPhone 3GS price • reghardware

The iPhone 3GS is set to drop in price this summer, as Apple attempts to broaden its share of the mobile market by offering a smartphone for folk on a budget.

“Reliable” sources broke the news to BGR which says Apple’s preparationg of a low cost iPhone is as simple as bringing down the price of the 2009’s 3GS.

Apple iPhone 3G S

Then with the iPhone 4 and iPhone 5 – or iPhone 4S; even reliable sources still seem not to know which – covering other pricing levels, Apple will have a full range of iDevices in every pricing bracket and can begin battling Android’s dominance of the lower reaches of the smartphone biz.

If the mole is to be believed, the handset will retail for no more than $350 (£218) contract-free. in the UK, the 3GS is currently £428 Sim-free. An announcement is expected late-August. ®

AAA mobile chargers tackle EV range anxiety

AAA today announced roadside assistance for electric vehicles, addressing an industry-wide concern over the limited range of all-electric cars.

The motor club unveiled its AAA Roadside Assistance service for EVs at the Plug-In 2011 electric vehicle conference, saying that six metropolitan areas will each pilot-test a truck starting this summer. The intent is to give drivers a limited amount of drive time to get them out of a jam and to a charging station, according to AAA.

The mobile chargers will be Level 2 and Level 3 chargers, which means they operate faster than a normal household outlet. ten to 15 minutes of charge time will give between 3 to 15 miles of driving range, according to AAA.

AAA is experimenting with different technologies to see which best address the problem of depletedcar batteries in different areas. One truck shown at the conference has a removable lithium ion battery pack, while other roadside assistance trucks will have generators that run on liquid fuels.

Because it has seen strong demand for EV roadside charging, AAA expects to roll out the service across the country after the initial pilot program. The first regions, which have invested in a public charging station infrastructure, are Seattle; the San Francisco Bay Area; Los Angeles; Knoxville, Tenn.; the Tampa Bay Area; and Portland, Ore.

“While these six areas are part of the initial pilot program, we’ve had tremendous interest from AAA clubs across the country to offer this service to their members, and we anticipate expanding the program to additional areas in the months following initial deployment,” said John Nielsen, AAA director of auto repair, buying services, andconsumer information.

There have been roadside assistance programs introduced in other countries already, but AAA said this is the first to be available in North America. For prospective EV drivers, public charging stations and roadside assistance programs are part of the infrastructure that can make electric cars more convenient and attractive. The Nissan Leaf, which runs on battery power alone, has a driving range of about 80 to 100 miles depending on conditions.

Could Apple sell 30 million iPhones next quarter?

Could Apple sell 30 million iPhones in the fourth quarter?

(Credit:Apple)

With a newiPhone expected this fall, Apple’s flagship device could deliver record sales of 30 million units around the world just in the fourth quarter, according to an analyst from investment firm BTIG.

In an investor’s note released yesterday, analyst Walter Piecyk pointed to the strong demand for a new iPhone as one key reason for his forecast, which is higher than BTIG’s current estimate of 21.5 million.

In comparison, Apple sold 14.1 million iPhones during last year’s third quarter (its fiscal fourth quarter), the first full quarter following the launch of the iPhone 4 in late June.

Even further, the company could sell as many as 10 million iPhones in the U.S. alone in this year’s final quarter, Piecyk forecasts. the numbers just in the U.S. would double Apple’s prior sales record and account for almost 50 percent of BTIG’s current forecast.

But Apple is also less reliant on the U.S. market than when it launched the iPhone 4, noted the analyst. the number of global carriers has now grown to 225, up from 150 when the current iPhone debuted. In 2009, AT&T accounted for around 40 percent of all the iPhones sold, according to BTIG estimates. But now, AT&T and Verizon Wireless combined account for only 30 percent.

The analyst cited other reasons for his huge global sales forecast.

Apple’s legacy phones are likely to continue to sell at discounted prices, in the same way the iPhone 3GS is currently available for $49. Retailers such as Target and Radio Shack have already trimmed their prices on the iPhone 4 in anticipation of a new model, according to Ars Technica and other news sites.

Further, Piecyk expects Apple to expand its U.S. carrier network to include Sprint, a move that’s been rumored for a few months. If Sprint hops on the iPhone bandwagon, it could account for 1.5 million of the 30 million units projected globally.

Looking at the other U.S. carriers, Piecyk expects AT&T to sell at least 5 million iPhones in the fourth quarter, the same number of iPhone 4 handsets it sold during that model’s initial quarter. But 5 million could turn out to be a lowball estimate, according to the analyst, since AT&T now has around 23 million iPhone subscribers and potential upgraders, compared with only 16.5 million when the iPhone 4 launched.

Verizon Wireless is expected to contribute 4 million in iPhone unit sales for the quarter. iPhone sales for the carrier failed to meet BTIG’s estimates for the second quarter. But Piecyk believes Verizon customers were simply waiting for a new model rather than opting for an iPhone 4 that had already been on the market for six months.

Of course, one key question remains. Could Apple ramp up 30 million iPhones to sell around the world in a single quarter? the company ran into trouble trying to fill enough iPad 2 orders to meet the overwhelming demand.

Piecyk doesn’t provide an answer but admits that supply chain constraints and an elevated number of phones consumed just by carriers in the U.S. “could make the 30 million target difficult to reach.”

Nokia Confirms No US Release of N9, Abandons MeeGo in US

After weeks of speculation regarding the fate of the N9′s release pattern after its unveiling earlier this Summer, Nokia has decided to place its bets squarely on Windows Phone 7 in the US and has stated that it will not offer the MeeGo-based N9 in the US, effectively cutting it off from its largest potential market and the largest concentration of MeeGo developers in the US with the following statement:

“After the very positive reception to the launch of the Nokia N9, the product is now being rolled out in countries around the world. At this time we will not be making it available in the US. Nokia takes a market by market approach to product rollout, and each country makes its own decisions about which products to introduce from those available. Decisions are based on an assessment of existing and upcoming products that make up Nokia’s extensive product portfolio and the best way in which to address local market opportunities.”

Nokia has also made a similar statement in regards to a release in the UK, suggesting that the company is intentionally limiting its release in order to draw attention away from it and towards Windows Phone 7. This should not come as a surprise considering CEO Stephen Elop’s previous statements regarding MeeGo after the initial announcement of the N9, but many after experiencing the device had nothing but genuine praise for the device and platform and hoped it would be released, even if it meant a limited release with little official support.

In its current form, the N9 features a full capacitive AMOLED touch display at WVGA resolution with a new navigation concept: “Swipe”. The phone does away with hardware or software based home buttons and uses swiping gestures to navigate throughout the device. Preliminary hardware specifications for the device consist of the aforementioned AMOLED display, dedicated hardware camera button tied to an 8.0 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss wide angle optics and 720p video capture, and an option for 16 or 64GB of internal storage, 1GB of RAM, GPS, NFC support and full US 3G support despite its decision.

As it stands, it seems that Nokia is really sticking to its goals of de-emphasizing Symbian and MeeGo, though it is doing so at the cost of its potential to recover from its increasingly marginalized position in the smartphone space in the wake of Apple’s iPhone and Android, especially in the US. The N9 was seen as the first Nokia smartphone that would make a legitimate impact for the company since the heady days of the N Series, which was its last major success. Now with the confirmation of no US launch, US Nokia and MeeGo fans/developers alike will be left to wonder what might have been, as the manufacturer still struggles to maintain relevance in the US and struggles with rapidly declining marketshare abroad  stemming from the rise of low-cost Indian and Chinese manufacturers.

iPhone Application Development – Creating Apps For Money

The huge Niche That is the Application

When it comes to technology, there are few things that have advanced as quickly as the mobile phone. Few have advanced faster or as far. and one of the leaders in this cell phone advancement is the Apple iPhone. Its transformation into something that resembles a miniature, personal computer has given birth to a whole new side market. the applications that the iPhone can utilize range from the helpful to entertainment.

And for all the amazing applications that already exist, there are a slew of new ones just waiting to be created.

This has in itself created a product market that actually seems to rival the iPhone itself. Few times have we seen a sub-niche product reach such heights as the iPhone’s application. and many people are finding it very profitable. if you were to look on the internet , you could find many different tool’s and software products that make creating an application as easy as creating a blog or a webpage. not to mention, it’s a ton of fun, and anyone can do it.

iPhone Application Development

The greatest thing about iPhone Applications is that this no end to the number of apps that can/will be created. if you can imagine it, you can make it. and with technology changing all the time, there will always be a need for newer, better iPhone apps. So developing your own iPhone apps , either for fun or for profit could definitely be a longterm idea or hobby.

Now, besides great ideas, developing iPhone applications can take on a complete plan of action, or even a business model, if you decide to take iPhone application seriously. creating apps is about knowing what people want, and what they will want in the future. and in order to get your apps ready for the market, there needs to be a system or developmental plan. See just creating a great application isn’t enough to make great sales. There are certain ways to get the app listed in the Apple Application store. and not to mention, it’s a good idea to market the product so that your App gets in front of a ton of iPhone owners. It might seem a little overwhelming if you haven’t done any marketing, but it’s really quite easy once you see how it works. Especially on the Internet. Once you get a grasp of how to utilize the Internet for marketing purposes, you will realize that everything is basic, and very common sense orientated.

The best way to develop your application creation plan is to do a little research. There are some very successful application creators that offer complete guides and help manuals. if you want some help discovering your own success as an application creator, just check out the link:

Accessory iPad Keyboard Dock Versus a Bluetooth Keyboard

The iPad accessory Keyboard Dock is a full-size keyboard with a dock (docking station) in-one.

With this combined unit you can synchronize (sync) your iPad and charge its battery. This is done by connecting this unit via a USB cable with your computer.
An alternative to charge the battery of this device is to connect the keyboard dock unit, through a 30-pin connector at the rear, to an electrical outlet or wall socket, through the iPad 10W USB power adapter.

If you plan to purchase an accessory somewhere, keep in mind that you look for the statement: Made for iPad.

It tells you that the accessory has been designed to connect specifically to this device and has been proofed by the developer to meet Apple performance standards.

The keyboard, featuring a firm metallic enclosure (aluminum) does not need batteries and works without being connected to any power. It allows you to work on your iPad in portrait view, e.g. doing document typing, replying to emails etc.

While doing this, having a stable surface is important especially if you are charging the battery at the same time.

So you will need a desk, table or counter when using this unit. Some will use a hard covered book when sitting on the couch.

Now here comes the wireless bluetooth keyboard in.

A lot of people prefer working with the wireless keyboard in stead of the keyboard dock unit because there is more flexibility. you can view the screen of your device either in portrait or landscape. besides that, the bluetooth keyboard is separate from the device so you can move the keyboard around without moving your device as well.

However, a wireless keyboard does not have the specific iPad keyboard interface options. you are free in you choice which wireless keyboard you want to use. Any Apple bluetooth keyboard will do.

So, if you are on the go or travel then the device plus dock and wireless keyboard (instead of keyboard dock) might be more convenient. It allows you to move around and also share bluetooth keyboard with other devices such as. iPhone 4.

Another keyboard-dock concern might be that future iPad versions will use a different dock, which happened with other devices of this manufacturer.

The new device is also expected to arrive with a large 4-inch edge-to-edge screen. there are still some doubts about the smartphone’s retina display resolution which may or may not be increased with the dpi (dots per inch) count remaining the same. the home button is also said to have disappeared in the new model.

iPhone 5 will feature a better camera which will be an 8 MP rear camera with 1080p video playback and panoramic photo capture capability and an improved dual-LED flash unit, and a front facing 5 MP camera. more RAM, possibly 1GB, is also expected and will arrive with an improved A5 processor. Dual-core SoCs are also expected by few.

Other features include an improved antenna, 3-4 internal antennas for both GSM and CDMA networks and wireless charging capability. the only real fact about iPhone 5 known at the moment is that it will feature iOS 5, which will be true multitask capable and come with loads of new features such as News Stand, Reminders, Delta Updates and iMessage.

The smartphone carriers as for the moment may be Verizon or AT&T, but there have been talks about T-Mobile and Sprint being the next successor to feature an iPhone. Previously at the Reuters Tech Summit, Verizon’s Chief Financial Officer Francis Shammo said Apple will produce a universal phone that will function on both networks.
