‘Groove Coaster’ – Four Reasons It’s The Best Rhythm Game On The iPhone Or iPad » MTV Multiplayer

Ever since the iPhone launched, folks have been trying to pull off rhythm games on the platform. There have been successes, like the “Tap Tap Revenge” series, “Rock Band” and “Bit.Trip Beat,” but no game has come close to creating a better rhythm experience on iPhone than “Groove Coaster,” a new release from Taito.

Like most rhythm games, “Groove Coaster” relies on a simple mechanic: Tap the screen in time with the music, with the beat indicated by periodic icons scrolling across the screen. but there are a number of reasons why this game does the rhythm genre better than any iPhone game before it.

SIMPLICITY

“Rock Band” on iPhone is a pretty impressive translation of the original game, but it’s also extremely complex, requiring precise taps in specific locations. “Groove Coaster” doesn’t care where you tap, so long as you’ve got the right timing. It’s also played vertically, which makes it a great subway game, as you can hold the bar with one hand while tapping away with the other.

VISUALS

“Groove Coaster” comes from the same developers as the excellent “Space Invaders: Infinity Gene.” the aesthetic is shared by both games, with an emphasis on clean lines and trippy visuals. each music track comes with its coaster track, so instead of a static, scrolling bar you’ll find the track winds and twists in time with the music, making the experience more intense. this can be a little disorienting at times, but it’s much better than having a series of levels that look exactly the same, save for a palate change.

DEPTH

Another carry-over from “Infinity Gene” is the ability to earn experience and level up your character. Leveling up unlocks new features, like avatars with special abilities and different visual skins, giving you reason to go back and play earlier levels over again.

VALUE

Right now, “Groove Coaster” costs 99 cents (though it’ll go up to three dollars soon). At that price you’re getting 21 songs, each with three difficulty levels. It’s a staggering amount of content for that price, and if you’re looking for more, there’s an in-game store where you can buy more tracks and avatars. There’s also Game Center support for leaderboards and achievements, if that’s your bag. And, while they were at it, they tossed in Universal support, so it’ll work on your iPad or iPhone (3GS and above).

There’s absolutely no reason you shouldn’t be hopping on the “Groove Coaster” bandwagon right now. It’s a terrific game that should be enjoyed by anyone with ears and a finger.

Lifehacks

We recently discovered that the iPhone has become the most commonly used camera among Flickr users. Of course, there are photography purists who will say that taking a photo with your phone isn’t the same as using a sophisticated SLR camera, but the results speak for themselves. An improvement in the quality of camera phones, coupled with some great apps that really let you get creative, and you’d be amazed what kinds of photos you can take with your phone. As the saying goes, the best camera is the one you have with you.

We’ve put together a short list of guidelines to keep in mind when using your phone, along with some examples of great phone photography and iPhoneography.

Know your phone

Get used to your phone. if there’s a way to add a shortcut that lets you fire up the camera straight away, it’s a great way to make sure you don’t miss those quick photos that often pass you by. if you own an iPhone you can set your home button to act as a shortcut to launch the camera. Android users can use the app QikCam which acts as a shutter button sitting right on your home screen. aside from opening the camera app, you should be familiar with how it works. Camera phones aren’t renowned for the their speed, so it’s best to know the shutter speed, and understand the exact moment the photo is taken.

Take note of your lighting

One of the most important things to consider when taking photos with your phone is lighting. Bad lighting will kill the best of pictures, even with a decent camera, so when taking portrait photos with your phone, make sure your subject is well lit. if you’re indoors, the photography rule of keeping the light to your back is just as important. Light behind your subject will only darken the image. And regardless of how good your lighting is, also make sure you hold your phone steady. the slightest shake could blur your image, and ruin what would have been the perfect picture. Some camera apps also aim to help counteract the effect of shaking. iPhone users can use Pro Camera, a fabulous $2.99 app which includes an Anti-Shake Image Stabilizer among many other features. Android users can opt for the popular app Camera 360 which features a similar stabilizer.

With street photography, be aware of your lighting, but you don’t necessarily have to follow the rules. Depending on the mood you’re aiming for, sometimes taking a photo facing directly into the sun, the photo filled with lens flare and all, can lead to a great photo like Alexander Kesselaar’s dreamlike photo shot with Hipstamatic:

Avoid using digital zoom

Digital zoom is deceiving, and some phones, like the Google Nexus S, don’t even come with the feature. in essence, all digital zoom does is enlarge the image rather than zoom in, and so it immediately becomes pixelated. if you can, it’s best to avoid using it, and instead simply move closer to your subject.

Consider composition

Think about your photo before you take it. take the rule of thirds into consideration. many camera apps on the iPhone, and on various android handsets, will place visible grid lines on your screen making it easy to visualize the image with the rule of thirds in mind. Placing the main subjects directly along the grid lines can often lead to a stronger composition, as the image below demonstrates.

Think about your background

A camera phone isn’t able to isolate the subject from the background. You have two options to deal with this. You can either go with less clutter, and make sure your subject is in front of a simple background, or simply fill the image with your subject. this is particularly important when it comes to portraits. there are other times you can throw this rule right out the window. With street photography, for example, a busy scene which fills up the screen can often make for a fascinating image.

Have an arsenal of apps on your phone

Not everyone will agree with this point, but sometimes applying a cool filter to an image can make it even better. There’s no limit to the number of great iPhone and Android apps that can enhance your photos. the most obvious example is Instagram, but other apps worth having on your phone include PicPlz, Molome, Hipstamatic and MoreLomo. other than apps which let you apply interesting effects to your images, you can also install Dermandar, a nifty app for creating stunning panoramas.

A common and popular effect found in many phone apps, such as Instagram, is the tilt-shift effect, which gives photos a toy-like appearance. Duncan’s image from Flickr is a great example of how tilt-shift can really bring a photo to life.

Don’t limit yourself to one photo

There’s no reason to satisfy yourself with just one photo, and especially with a phone, you’re better to make several attempts at capturing the same image. that way you can be sure to avoid shake, blur, and any other issues that you’re likely to face.

Experiment and try new things

Don’t be afraid to try interesting angles. Sometimes playing around with angles can make an image look contrived, and other times, it just works. There’s no harm in experimenting and seeing if something works. Alexander Kesselaar‘s photo taken with an iPhone is an interesting example of what simply tilting your phone at an angle can get you:

Don’t go for the obvious shot. Some of the most common photos taken with phones include cloudy skies and telephone poles, your own shoes, and your cup of coffee. while that’s all good and well, there’s only so many of those you can take. think outside the box. Go outside your comfort zone, and try something different. a great example of just how experimental you can get with your photography, using nothing more than a phone can be seen in Philippe Boivin’s underwater photo taken with an iPhone.

Keep your lens clean

We don’t think twice about keeping our camera lenses clean, but can often forget to do the same with our phones. Finger smudges can easily affect the quality of your images. using a microfiber polishing cloth is the best way to go about ensuring there are no smudges on your lens. Most smartphones come with a microfiber cloth to clean the screen, so you can also use them to clean off your lens. Don’t use a tissue as it could scratch your lens.

Accessories won’t hurt

Getting some accessories for your phone won’t hurt either, but they aren’t a must. if you’re in need of a flexible tripod to keep your phone steady, or get an interesting angle you wouldn’t otherwise reach, Joby’s GorillaMobile will keep your phone steady. PhotoJojo is a great source for fisheye, telephoto and wide angle lenses that you can mount on any cell phone. You can even get an iPhone SLR mount which will let you use your Canon and Nikon lenses on your iPhone giving you depth of field and manual focus using your phone. the mount, however, doesn’t come cheap at $249. that said, if you’re serious about your iPhoneography this could be a great addition to your accessories collection.

Some examples to get you inspired

If you’re still not completely convinced that you can get some pretty impressive images with your phone, we’ve dug up a few examples to help inspire you.

Fstoppers shot an entire fashion shoot with what they call the worst possible camera, the iPhone 3GS. the results can be seen in the Flickr album, which contains both the raw and edited images. Of course, as they say in their blog post, there is more to the photoshoot than just the camera:

“I created this video to simply show that you should not be limited by your camera. obviously there was a lot that went into this shoot including a professional model, hair and makeup, a studio, lighting, and a retoucher. We may create another video in the future where we shoot with only natural light but this video is simply about the camera. there are so many photographers who are obsessed with noise, sharpness, color, dynamic range, megapixels, chromatic aberration, moire, distortion, etc. So many photographers get wrapped up in the technical side that they forget how to take compelling images. this video is for them.”

The image on the left is as it was taken with the iPhone, and the image on the right is the one that was processed.

Hipstamatic has been featured in Foreign Policy in a series of photographs taken as part of a photojournalism experiment at the front line in Afghanistan. So far there have been three sets published in the series, The War in Hipstamatic, Heavy Metal, and Female Engagement. this is a great example of what you can do without having to lug around a huge SLR camera and a bunch of lenses.

Professional examples aside, there are stunning photos on Flickr that have been taken with iPhones. a quick glance at the search results for iPhoneography should be enough inspiration to get you started.  And don’t forget to check out some of the top iPhone and Android photography apps out there.

Hands-On With Skype’s Phone App for iPad

After giving the world a a brief tease Monday night, Skype for iPad is now (finally) live.

The tablet version of Skype’s app is crisp and seemingly bug-free on the iPad 2’s 1024-by-768-pixel display. You’ve got all the features of the iPhone app — voice and video calling over 3G or Wi-Fi (using the front- or rear-facing camera), the ability to make calls to landlines or receive calls using your Online Number, and instant messaging — but it’s now optimized for the iPad.

The Skype for iPhone app has supported 3G and video calling for a while now. Previously, iPad 2 owners could use the Skype iPhone app on their tablet, albeit in pixel-doubled mode. Skype prematurely launched its iPad-optimized product late yesterday evening and quickly removed it from the App Store, but now it’s available for good.

When you open up the app, it initially launches with its familiar robin’s egg blue log-in screen and then takes you to its main interface. Your contacts are displayed as a four by however-many grid of their profile photos, kind of like a yearbook page (but more sad looking, if most of your contacts don’t have profile photos, like mine). Clicking on a contact’s image pulls up a popover that gives you button options for video chatting, making a call, instant messaging, or sending them an SMS message, along with their profile information.

Unfortunately, I was only able to make voice and video chats with the app using Wi-Fi; the app was having trouble connecting to Verizon’s 3G network. I am not sure if this was due to general poor reception here in the Wired offices, or if Skype has some sort of threshold reception level that must be maintained in order to deliver calls across a 3G network.

You can make video calls in portrait or landscape orientation, and depending on the orientation of your and your caller’s devices, the onscreen layout varies to take advantage of that. The transition when switching orientations, for either my own or the contact I was chatting with, was automatic and smooth. The full width or full size video of your contact onscreen is a bit stretched out and pixelated — in my opinion, slightly worse quality than over FaceTime, but only just.

Voice chatting (again, over Wi-Fi only) was crystal clear, seemingly better quality than when I last used the desktop version to make a Skype call a week or two ago. But then again, my contact in this case was a co-worker on the other side of the office, not someone across the pond.

Instant-messaging conversations take up the full screen, unless you’re video chatting at the same time. In that case, you can tap to open up a small popover of your conversation in the corner.

Since I only played with the app for about half an hour, I did not get a good sense of how much the app drains your iPad’s battery in the long term, but after making a few 2-to-5 minute Skype-to-Skype voice and video calls and instant messaging, the damage was only a 1 or 2 percent battery level drop.

The entire app experience is polished and smooth, exactly what you’d hope to expect with Skype on the iPad.

Skype for iPad is compatible with iOS 4.0 or above. it is free and available for download in Apple’s App Store.

Netbooks Vs iPhone

Everyone knows what an iPhone is. It has been at the centre of technology buzz since it was released. the latest variant, the iPhone 3G comes with 3G mobile broadband and combines with Apples Safari internet browser. It combines 3 consoles, a phone, a music player and a internet browsing device.

But it shares many similar functions to a mini laptop; the question is which is better?

Both have a simple on button but time to take to load up varies. with Linux, the time can be as short as 15 seconds, although Windows XP will take longer. the iPhone will take around 20-25 seconds from turning on to being ready to use.

>>> Winner is this category: Netbook

Typing on both isn’t the same as on a desktop, but the netbook still has the edge here. It has a full qwerty keyboard rarely less than 80% the size of a full size keyboard. It takes practice to type quickly on the iPhone’s 3.5 touchscreen – I find it fastest with two thumbs, but accuracy is compromised. If you need to be accurate, using the corner of your finger helps. still, it’s difficult, especially when you’ve got a protective case on to stop scratching the back.

>>> Winner is this category: Netbook

Apple safari as its limitations, but the version on the iPhone is more than adequate. still, the Mozilla Firefox or Windows Internet Explorer are capable of viewing a lot more and it working. you can surf easier on netbooks, fill in forms quicker and open more windows.

>>> Winner is this category: Netbook

The iPhone was essentially built entirely as an application for communication. Netbooks are designed for another role. as a phone, it would seemingly have the upper hand on communications, what with it’s 3G internet and wifi. Netbooks don’t generally come as standard with 3G, but wifi is standard. the rise of Skype and other internet phone companies make the netbook very competitive – but it would look a bit strange talking into your microphone of your mini laptop on your typical commute

>>> Winner is this category: iPhone

The iPhone is easily small enough to fit in a pocket, so perhaps is an easy winner here. still, most of us carry a bag or something similar around with us, which a netbook can easily slip into. the new Sony VAIO P Series can easily slip into a jacket pocket.

>>> Winner is this category: iPhone

Netbooks typically cost between 200-300, whilst your unofficially unlocked iPhone will cost between 350-400 depending on where you want to buy. you can only but the official factory unlocked iPhones in countries where it is illegal to sell locked phones like Belgium, new Zealand, Italy, Australia, France, Germany and Singapore. Officially unlocked iPhones will set you back around 500 – and the price keeps rising as the pound weakens.

Overall: Netbook wins

That look Photoshopped to me. at least the mountains are pretty, but that iPhone is so not in that picture.

I’m the photographer, and I assure you it is NOT photoshopped. I know it looks like fake, and I got a lot of funny looks from folks around me while taking it, but my biggest fear was that it would topple over. the whole mountain range looks surreal when you’re in its presence, but maybe it was the lighting on the phone that makes it look ‘inserted’.

How can anyone be fooled by this? I don’t understand.

Heh, heh … never would I imagine my photo submission would generate such chatter.

The phone was NOT photoshopped into the picture, but yeah I didn’t do the best job of trying to clean up the glare on the iPhone screen from my Olympus’ flash (it was MS Paint for crissakes, don’t even have PS).  my iPhone really was there exactly as you see it, as fake as it may look.

(a) Because the camera was about 24” away from the iPhone, (b) It’s not floating, it is balancing on top of the boulder beneath it, and (c) even though it was a sunny day the iPhone was in the shade so I put the flash on my Olympus (but the bush to the right was in direct sunlight). look, I have no reason to BS iLounge or any readers, I just thought it was a cool shot from my recent vacation.

I like you and your posts over the years RMP, but if you send me the original photo – the original, not a copy, I’ll have it analyzed by my wife who is a photo expert and come back here and publicly apologize to you.  I’ll give you $20 too.

T-Mobile cuts iPhone 3GS cost and adds unlimited browsing

If you’ve been looking for a cheap iPhone deal, then this could be for you. for a limited time T-Mobile is cutting the monthly cost of the iPhone 3GS to £25 a month and adding unlimited data use without any fair-use policy.

Until July 31st you can get the iPhone 3GS for £25.54 in a package that includes 100 minutes and 100 texts. The phone is free on a 24-months contract long and include a T-Mobile Flexible Booster, with the choice of Unlimited Text, free calls to T-Mobile users or unlimited calls to UK landlines.

The saving alone is impressive, but T-Mobile is also adding free browsing with its Truly Unlimited Internet package, which lets you browse the web, stream videos and music and update Facebook to your hearts content without worrying about fair-use policy or download caps. T-Mobile is one of the few network operators to offer this – many of the others cap data use at 500MB or 1GB depending on your contract.

The Apple iPhone 3GS is perhaps the forgotten gem of the iPhone range. Offering many features of the iPhone 4, including multitasking, access to app store and iTunes, but at a lower price. Don't forget the phone will get 200 new features when the iOS 5 update lands later this year. Read our Apple iPhone 3GS review here.

It’s not just the iPhone 3GS either, the Motorola Atrix, Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, HTC Desire HD and Samsung Galaxy S will cost just £25 a month, equating to a whopping saving of £245 off the Motorola Atrix and £367 off the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play.
