The Real Winnie the Pooh Returns to the Hundred Acre Wood

And it has worked with one very notable exception. Winnie the Pooh.

In 2007, the Walt Disney Company followed the blueprint, abandoning the character’s gentle hand-drawn look in favor of slick Pixar-style animation. Pooh got a scooter and a superhero outfit. Christopher Robin was jettisoned in favor of a 6-year-old tomboy named Darby.

As it turned out, nobody wanted to see Eeyore breakdance.

So Disney is re-introducing the classic Pooh characters across its empire, most notably in a new movie that arrives in theaters on Friday. it is a bid to capture a generation more accustomed to the special effects wizardry of Harry Potter, the smart-alecky knowingness of “Kung Fu Panda” and the fast pace of “Cars 2.” because the bear with the rumbly tummy has traditionally been one of the first characters parents introduce to their children, Disney is reverting to what it does best — pushing the nostalgia button.

In a nod to the character’s 1966 big-screen debut in “Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree,” the new movie, titled simply “Winnie the Pooh,” begins with a live-action sequence in Christopher Robin’s room and then becomes animated once the camera dives into a storybook, returning the characters to their old-fashioned, slower, water-colored roots.

“we are constantly trying to evolve our characters, but in this case we want to get away from trying to make Winnie the Pooh in any way modern,” said Mary Beech, a Disney vice president and steward of the Pooh brand.

The stakes are high for Disney. Global sales of Pooh merchandise — books, plush toys, T-shirts, potty chairs — have fallen 12 percent over the last five years, but still account for a staggering $5.5 billion.

Branding experts say aging character franchises are among the most difficult to keep alive because they require continually walking a tightrope. “With Winnie the Pooh, Disney is going to continue to struggle with the tension of remaining relevant to kids versus maintaining a love-mark brand that parents trust,” said Matt Britton, a founder of Mr. Youth, a New York marketing firm.

Pooh, which remains Disney’s second best-selling character after Mickey Mouse, is a vital cog in Disney’s ambition to move deeper into entertainment for preschoolers and merchandise for infants. but the company says internal research indicates that Pooh is also the no. 1 character that women want on clothing and accessories for themselves.

As a result, Disney has been pursuing higher-end Pooh products, particularly in overseas markets, which represent 79 percent of the franchise’s annual retail sales. Designers in Japan, for instance, have licensed the character for $700 dresses and $400 bags; limited-edition plush toys run $299.

Retro may be the rallying cry for the revitalization effort, but Disney executives emphasize that the execution has modern touches. For instance, a revamped Facebook page dedicated to the character has over 2.2 million followers, and a Pooh iPad and iPhone app called Puzzle Book is a hit. A few months ago, a Hundred Acre Wood-themed ride at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., was outfitted with oversize video touch screens; children can write on them by smearing virtual dripping honey.

Still, the most visible of Disney’s efforts are notably yesteryear. Disney Channel in September will introduce “the Mini Adventures of Winnie the Pooh,” a series made up of clips from “Honey Tree” and other old movies. (Disney Channel has canceled “my Friends Tigger and Pooh,” the ill-fated effort featuring Darby.)

Stephen J. Anderson and Don Hall, the directors of the new movie, said they labored to distill the characters to what made them superstars in the first place. “A touch of cynicism is certainly prominent in movies today, and we were adamant that absolutely none of that could creep in,” said Mr. Anderson.

Mr. Hall added, “People want these characters to be who they are and not grow and change, which is a real difference.”

Pooh and his pals, created in 1926 by the British author A. A. Milne, also interact with letters and punctuation marks on the pages as the film progresses, another nostalgic touch. the movie, based on three of Milne’s original stories, follows the friends as they find Eeyore a new tail and fret about Christopher Robin, who they fear has been captured by a monster called a Backson. (In reality, Owl just misread a note reading, “back soon.”)

To recreate the old look, Mr. Hall and Mr. Anderson studied original illustrations by Ernest H. Shepard in the collection of Britain’s Victoria and Albert Museum. They also collaborated with Burny Mattinson, a veteran of the Walt Disney Animation Studios who was an assistant on “Honey Tree” and oversaw subsequent Pooh cartoons.

Disney’s renewed focus on Pooh comes as the company has been freed from decades of legal entanglements related to the character. Milne sold the merchandising rights to Stephen Slesinger, a licensing entrepreneur, in 1930; Disney acquired those rights in 1961. but the Slesinger heirs sued Disney in 1991 over what they saw as inadequate royalty payments. Disney fought back, and the feuding continued until last year, when the media company emerged victorious.

At a time when first graders watch Disney’s PG-13-rated “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies, will simplicity sell? the answer may not come on opening weekend. Disney is risking box-office suicide by releasing “Winnie the Pooh” against the final Harry Potter installment. but Disney’s film was cheap by Hollywood standards — about $30 million — and the company is not aiming for a Pixar-level blockbuster.

“it sounds crazy, but as a G-rated film you can do a lot more matinee business in the summer,” Mr. Hall said. “And this is not just about making a successful movie.”

Review: Bad Elf GPS receiver for iOS devices – New Tech Gadgets & Electronic Devices

iOS (and other mobile operating systems for that matter) work very well with GPS. Photographs can be geotagged, nearby points of interest can be found, directions can be given, and so on. Part of the reason these devices work so well with location-based services is that they have GPS built right in–all the iPhone’s after the original have it and so does the 3G iPad/iPad 2. so what’s the point of an accessory GPS receiver for iOS devices?

For fans of GPS (anything from casual mappers to vacationers) there a few reasons why an external receiver makes sense. The most logical is that not all the iOS devices have GPS built in–aside from the original (2G) iPhone, there are the WiFi iPads, and then all the iPod touch models. these work perfectly well with GPS, they just lack the on-board hardware.

Another reason to add GPS to your iDevice is that the internal receiver, like most internal receivers, isn’t that great. External ones might suck down more power, but they are typically more accurate and more consistent.

A final reason, and admittedly a niche case, is when you are traveling internationally with your iPhone. If you keep your smartphone in airplane mode the internal GPS will not work, despite the fact that GPS transmissions aren’t part of your data plan. (GPS can’t be an airplane mode exception, like WiFi.)

The bad Elf receiver is a tiny device (about 1-inch by 1-inch) with a 30-pin connection on one side and Micro USB on the other. it plugs into your iDevice, just like your charger. When iOS sees it built-in logic recognizes the bad Elf’s GPS signal as being more accurate then that of the on-board chip. The USB port is used for charging the phone/tablet/media player while GPS is active (the Elf is small but relatively power-hungry). Finally there is an LED indicator that tells the user when a signal is being acquired and when it’s locked on.

It’s crucial that the receiver be compatible with all your favorite GPS apps. The good news is that the bad Elf is–they have a long list of them on their site. The top picks like MotionX GPS, TomTom, Navigon, Magellan, RunKeeper, GeoCaching, and Nike+ are all there.

The bad Elf works rather well. with its MTK chipset the receiver more consistent than the iPhone 4′s GPS, but the real benefit is that it can add GPS to my WiFi iPad 2. Sure, at $99 I probably should have purcahsed the 3G model (a $129 upgrade) but this way I can remove the receiver and use it with other products, plus I can use GPS in airplane mode. If I really want to geek out, I can also add an in extension cable and place the bad Elf a few feet away from my device.

There are some issues with the bad Elf, but they are relatively minor. first there is the price. at $99 this isn’t exactly an impulse purchase, unless you have something special planned for it. Battery life is an issues as well, because if the device isn’t plugged in via USB you’ll drain your battery in a matter of hours. In other words, an iPhone 4 will not get through a full day of GPS usage and I managed to use about 50% of my battery life in 4-5 hours. GPS lock time is a bit slow on the bad Elf, but it’s usually under a minute from a cold start so it’s barely worth mentioning.

Then you have the logistics, which are an unavoidable complication. Here is a scenario: you want to add GPS to your iPad. The bad Elf will do that, but without a data connection you won’t be able to grab maps in real-time. That means you’ll need to preload maps, which requires an application that works with cached maps. popular ones like OffMaps and MotionX GPS do this, but you’ll have to make sure you get maps that have sufficient detail and then make sure you cache them before going out. they can range from dozens to hundreds of megabytes so you’ll want a steady WiFi connection. you can record a GPS track without a map, but this won’t be helpful if you want to use the location data for navigation purposes.

The bad Elf with an iPad or iPod touch is great combination. there are some issues that have to be worked around, but if you are using the bad Elf simply for getting a GPS signal it does a great job. there are complications, like battery life and caching maps, but those both can be worked around. Do keep in mind that the bad Elf is Apple approved (it even has its own app) while some similar devices require jailbreaking to work.

The holiday tech list

What’s the attraction?

Gadgets are there to make our lives easier, richer and more enjoyable. So while many of us will look forward to leaving the laptop behind when we go on holiday, for others that lifeline to emails and online information is essential. Email and photo-messaging save sending postcards home, an ebook reader will lighten your luggage, and the right gadgets will stop you getting lost, burgled or bored. of course you can switch off on holiday, but with all this modern technology to choose from, why would you want to? Left to your own devices, mobile or otherwise, there is a gargantuan array of "travel gadgets" on the market, ranging from practical tools to wacky gimmicks.

Read 1,000 books

You won’t, of course, however long your trip, but the Amazon Kindle might make you think you could. the leading electronic book reader is lighter than a paperback and – crucially – entirely legible in bright sunlight through sunglasses (and you can’t say that about Apple’s iPad). the Kindle can store thousands of books and you can download wherever you are. the wifi-only version must be in a wireless hotspot to connect, but the 3G edition feels like magic. you can sit on the beach, browse the bookstore, and download a digital tome in under 60 seconds.

Unlock Your iPhone 3G With Yellow Sn0w Guide & Tutorial

Below are instructions on how to unlock your iPhone 3G using Yellow Sn0w. Unlocking your iPhone 3G will make it possible for you to use any cellphone carrier.

Before you go any further, make sure to READ EVERY SINGLE WORD OF THIS TUTORIAL. If you think you’re too cool for school, then go directly to the instructions but please, do not complain if you mess up your iPhone during the process, which is very unlikely to happen anyways…

First things first. In order to be able for you to use Yellow Sn0w to unlock your iPhone 3G, you have to be on a jailbroken iPhone that runs the latest firmware 2.2 with the latest baseband 02.28.00. To find out what firmware you’re on, go to Settings > General > about and look for “Modem Firmware”. it should say 02.28.00.

If you have not jailbroken your iPhone yet, you have to now in order to unlock. To jailbreak your iPhone, follow the QuickPwn 2.2 guide that I wrote a few weeks ago.

If you have already jailbroken your iPhone using PwnageTool to preserve your baseband, sorry but you have to restore and rejailbreak again in order to have the latest 02.28.00 baseband.

If you have updated to the latest firmware 2.2 with its latest 02.28.00 baseband, then you’re good to go.

So from now on, I assume that you are on a clean firmware 2.2 with firmware 02.28.00 and that your iPhone is jailbroken.

1. go to Cydia and install this new source: apt9.yellowsn0w.com/ (note that snow is spelled with a zero, not an “o”). To install a new source in Cydia, go to Manage > Sources > Edit > Add, then type in the source apt9.yellowsn0w.com/ and tap “Add Source”.

2. once the source has been added, tap “Return To Cydia”, then tap “Done”.

3. now tap “apt9.yellowsn0w.com from the list of sources “Entered by Users”.

4. Select Yellow Sn0w, then tap install nad confirm.

5. once the installation had been successfully completed, return to Cydia.

6. Hard reset your iPhone. To do this, hold the home and power buttons simultaneously for a few seconds until the phone shuts off by itself (ignore the “slide to power off” message)

7. Insert whatever SIM card you want! Wait a few seconds and you should be good.

See, that wasn’t too hard at all. Users that are already familiar with Cydia and sources shouldn’t have any problem at all. but first time jailbreakers might be a little lost, which is why I detailed this tutorial a lot.

Now there are a few known issues with Yellow Sn0w and I highly recommend you either read my previous post about it, or go directly to the Dev Team’s blog.

1) If you are on tmobile USA you should disable 3G in Settings or sbsettings.2) YellowSn0w does not work with a SIM PIN. You  must disable your SIM card pin lock.

At any rate, I would really appreciate it if you could digg this post, then write a comment, then go to the Dev Team’s blog to thank them for their great work.

How Does the iPhone Work?

As you may be aware, iPhone is a cellular phone created by Apple. the device combines an iPod music/video player, a cell phone, an internet web and email client, and a handheld application platform. the iPhone 3GS (2009) has up to 32 GB of storage space for music, movies, podcasts, and other applications. It is estimated that a 32 GB iPhone can hold around 6000 typical pop songs.

Part of the iPhone’s storage is used for the operating system and for optional third-party applications and so not all of this space is available to store songs and videos. the iPhone will serve as a camera phone, multimedia player and Internet service for those on the move.

After purchasing the iPhone, you should sign up for cell phone service with AT&T to activate the phone. the cell phone is capable of synchronization with a computer, enabling the user to quickly download contacts and calendars from Outlook onto the iPhone. the process is simple and immediate and can be done by plugging the re-charger cord – that comes with the phone – from the computer to the iPhone. the pop-up menus will guide the user to complete the process.

The iPhone is a rectangular shaped phone having a touch screen and camera lens. the outer edges contain the controls and plug receptacles. the receptacle for the re-charger is provided on the opposite end of the phone. There is a long button to control the volume, and the smaller button above it, is the mute button.

You can illuminate the touch screen by pressing the button located on the center bottom of the screen. Four icons are displayed at the bottom of the screen to indicate phone, mail, safari and iPod. these are the icons that are to be used to make phone calls, read and send emails, surf the Internet and listen to music.

On the top portion of the screen you will find a row of icons, each representing menus for different functions such as – text messaging, calendar, photo album, camera, YouTube, stock reports, maps, weather, clock, notes and settings. the additional features are you can use the phone as an alarm clock, a stop watch or even as an appointment book, camera and more.

Many more attractive features like games can be added and to know more, you can visit the online Apple store. As a matter of fact, thousands of games are available in the Apple Store and games are the single biggest category of applications made for iPhone and iPod Touch.

The iPhone has a built-in battery similar to iPods and will also use a similar type of headphone but with a built-in microphone. a speaker phone option is also available for both calls and music and video sound.

The multi-touch interface is the pride of the Apple iPhone. this is an entirely new interface based on a large multi-touch display and the incredible software lets you control everything using only just your fingers. the touch-screen does not require a stylus and will respond to bare skin to be operable you can glide through albums with Cover Flow, flip through photos and email them with a touch, or zoom in and out on a section of a web page.

Personal Tech

Love it or hate it, it’s the last hurrah of summer vacation, which means you’re likely to be cramming yourself onto a plane or staring at an endless line of brake lights snaking into the distance. To ease your travel travails, here are a few gadgets and services to salve the pain.

Amazing Earphones

That baby wailing behind you needn’t disturb your flight. A good pair of earphones can block out much of the cacophony — so-called noise-isolating earphones — as well as create the illusion that you’re sitting in your living room listening to your home stereo.

An excellent choice are the Ultimate Ears 700 from Logitech. Many higher-priced, high-fidelity earphones can sound harsh playing digital music. The 700’s deliver solid separation of instruments and voices without coming across as too crisp. On the other hand, these earphones aren’t slouches, yielding tight bass notes and a warm midrange. Even audiophiles should be happy with these $150 earbuds.

Global Phones

Ever tried to work on the road while the family is vacationing in, say, Canada? A friend of mine discovered after a week of relying on his smartphone that he had racked up a $1,700 bill. Granted, he was using it as a wireless Internet connection for his laptop, and to make conference calls back to the office and listen to hours of streaming music …

Still, you need to remain connected, whether you’re in Petawawa or Prague. for that you need a global phone — one that will operate on European networks — and a global plan. Recently, I tested a few phones while traveling and one of the most reliable proved to be the HTC HD7S on AT&T.

It uses Windows Phone 7 software (not the most popular choice these days), but it proved perfectly adequate, with all the free apps I needed. I even watched streaming movies on Netfix while in Europe.

AT&T says it will work — voice calls, text messaging, e-mail, and Internet — in over 200 countries around the world. Just make sure you get the right plan with roaming built-in. Voice roaming for discounted rates in foreign countries is an additional $5.99 a month and then $49.99 a month for 125 MB of Web traffic covering about 100 countries (so use free Wi-Fi where you can).

Beat the Traffic

Sure, you can use a smartphone for navigation, but for convenience and the latest smarts, a standalone portable navigation device is still better. Tom Tom’s GO 2535 M Live adds a new twist: honest to goodness real-time traffic reports.

Other such services gather data from a variety of sources, such as local DMVs and emergency first responders, but the information usually arrives too late to do you any good. Tom Tom’s $300 GO 2535 offers something new: live traffic information from other Tom Tom users on the road. The nav device has built-in two way communications, so that you can relay your progress and receive information about others on the road ahead of you.

Of course, the accuracy of the service depends on how many of your fellow Tom Tom owners are traveling the same route you are, but I’ve found it can save drivers a lot of aggravation. On one trip, it warned me about a tie-up and saved me 45-minutes on a 3-hour trip. it failed to warn me about sudden construction, though, so it’s not perfect — just better than any other such service I’ve found.

Plugging In

I shouldn’t have to remind you to bring chargers — in fact, bring an extra one. Go pack it now. You’re bound to leave one behind on your peregrinations, after all. but one place that’s still difficult to find an outlet is in the family sedan. Mom and dad have their phones, then there’s junior’s music player, the nav device — you get the picture.

An extra outlet can limit family squabbles. A good, and inexpensive solution is Belkin’s Dual Auto Charger for iPhone and iPod. Despite it’s name, the $30 gadget works with any device that charges using a USB cable. so you can charge a Bluetooth headset or Android phone. it plugs into a 12-volt outlet and then gives you two USB outlets: a “quick charge” and a slower trickle charge plug. all you have to do is remember to plug in.

Apple iPhone 3G Review

The Apple computers’ iPhone is a device which created a lot of hype prior to its launch. all those who claimed to be Gadget geeks became a nerd with the iPhone enthusiasm. the launch was not a grand affair, as it was offered only to a small number of countries, and a very high price tag for entry into the market with limited capabilities. These kept many prospective buyers wait to get a first hand feel of the product. the first iPhone failed to make an impression in the market and had many disappointed users. but with iPhone 3G, Apple aims to get a hold in the market as it provides functions like 3rd party application support, and application store. this makes the iPhone a computing arena. What’s stunning about the iPhone 3G is its compatibility to 3G networks at a price of $200. Let’s take a look at the features in detail.

The hardware is very similar to the original iPhone. the iPhone looks very similar to the iPod touch, the only difference being that you can make and receive calls on an iPhone. the display is brighter with a resolution of 480*320 and 3.5 inches. As compared with the original iPhone, the aluminum chic matte at the back has been replaced with plastic. this was expected, as the iPhone has to receive so many signals (GSM, WiFi, GPS, and Bluetooth etc). the battery life claimed by Apple is 10 hours on GSM talk, 5 Hours on 3G talk, 5 hours on Data transfer, 6 hours of WiFi usage, 24 Hours music and 7 Hours on video. if you are wondering that you will use your iPhone to read emails and listen to songs at the same time while commuting from home to work and then using the phone in the day time, it is likely that you’ll have no power left in the phone on the way back home.

It is delightful to use the iPhone mainly because of the software. the touch screen with an optimized mobile processor enhances the whole feeling of using a mobile phone as a computer. the most recent addition to the iPhone is App Store. the developers at Apple keep coming out with new programs which users can download and use it on their iPhone. There are several free and paid programs available, and to download them you will need to use your iTunes account. Apple also sends notifications as and when updates are available. the iPhone can read PowerPoint and other documents, but you cannot edit them.

We love the Apple iPhone for its new burner: 3G compatibility, GPS and did we mention downloadable applications through iTunes account, upgraded and user friendly OS, etc. but what still lacks in the iPhone are features like cut, copy paste, voice dialing. These need to be incorporated. the camera still needs improvisation. you have to browse many features to switch from 3G to GSM when the coverage is poor. to summarize the review here are a few pointers

• High speed 3G networks
• third party applications
• Expanded email
• Improved call quality
• Excellent music and video experience

• Basic features are still missing
• Uneven battery life
• Syncing of email gets faulty many a time
• Voice dialing feature is missing
• Choosing between GSM and 3G coverage is not easy.

China Now the App Store’s Second Largest Market

Distimo has released a new study that focuses on the iPhone’s App Store development in Asia. The analytics company examined data from 14 different countries, including China, to determine the App Store’s influence in the Eastern hemisphere.

The report’s findings placed China as the second largest market for Apple’s App Store, next to the United States. interestingly, while many European countries are seeing decreases in App Store activity, countries like China are seeing exponential growth in App Store download volume.

China’s numbers are especially impressive, considering that Apple didn’t open an App Store for the world’s most populated county until last Fall. Not to mention that the countries telecom, China Mobile, has yet to give its 600 million customers approved access to the iPhone.

A recent report claimed that one third of all iPhones in China are jailbroken. That would make sense, considering the lack of availability on China Mobile. Strick regulations have hindered an agreement between Apple and the country’s carrier. however, things are looking hopeful. Apple’s own Tim Cook was recently spotted at China Mobile headquarters, and there are rumors of a deal being reached between the two companies.

China’s thriving black market for iDevices reflects Distimo’s App Store activity report.

In South Korea, App Store downloads actually outnumbered downloads in Western countries, like France and Germany. in most countries, the Games category is by far the most active section of the App Store. South Korea does not currently have access to the Games category.

Distimo’s report shows that Asian markets are more likely to download free or lite apps, while Western countries are still well ahead in paid downloads. The average download volume of the top 300 apps in Asian territories combined is the same as the average volume in the U.S.

The report indicated that Japan is responsible for the majority of App Store revenue in Asia. Overall, Asia’s total App Store revenue is about two thirds of the revenue in the U. S.

As the App Store grows in size and reach, it’s interesting to see how the world’s markets respond. Things are definitely looking up for Asia.

Do these numbers from Distimo surprise you? if you’re one of our Eastern readers, let us know what you think of this report.

White plastic iPhone 4 pops up, possibly ‘4S’ model

Apple may have killed off its last white plastic gadget with the recent shelving of the unibody MacBook, but an allegediPhone prototype that’s making the rounds suggests it could be making a comeback.

Macrumors today picked up on a forum post from Vietnamese site Tinhte–the same outlet that got ahold of the iPhone 4 ahead of its official announcement, and more recently a 64GB iPhone 4 model–with what it says is a new variant of the iPhone 4.

What’s new? the translated forum post says the device is a little bit faster than the iPhone 4, weighs less, and is sporting plastic on the front and rear instead of glass.

That last bit is where things get interesting. Apple nearly shipped the original iPhone with a plastic screen, before changing it up to “optical-quality glass” just ahead of release for what the company said would result in a “superior level of scratch resistance and optical clarity.” That Apple would be contemplating a step back to plastic based on that claim is worthy of some eyebrow raising.

Numerous reports suggesting Apple has been working on an upgraded version of the iPhone 4 instead of a brand new model go back to may. (See CNET’s iPhone 5 rumor roundup for more.) More recently the tide has shifted, with rumors suggesting the release will represent a new generation with a different design. That was strengthened earlier this week with an alleged iPhone 5 case design with room for a larger screen and a return of a curved back, a design feature that stuck with the phone through its first three iterations.

As noted in previous coverage, a move to offer two new versions of the iPhone would represent a dramatic departure for Apple. With recent annual releases, Apple has simply continued to sell the previous version at a discounted price, as it does now with the $49 iPhone 3GS. the poster of this allegedly plastic variant of the iPhone 4 suggests this newer version will in fact represent the lower-cost model that will sit alongside the iPhone 5, an idea that’s been kicking around since after the release of the original model, and cropped up once again at the beginning of this year.

Why make a lower-cost model? to help fend off competitors like Google and its army ofAndroid phones. According to a Nielsen research report this morning they are up to 39 percent of the smartphone market in the U.S., up from 29 percent in March.

Later this year Apple is widely expected to take the wraps off a new iPhone to replace its now more than 1-year-old iPhone 4. a report from earlier today suggested Apple was cooking up a production test run of 400,000 units ahead of beginning mass production for a release in September.
