Jabra Freeway Bluetooth Speakerphone Review

I’m a huge consumer of music while on the go. If I’m not doing something that requires concentration, I’m likely to have earbuds shoved in my ears or headphones on. when driving, however, I don’t like to use earbuds/headphones because of the safety issues. I drive an older model car usually, so have been using a tape adapter to connect to the sound system. when Julie offered the team the Bluetooth equipped Jabra Freeway, I jumped at the chance.

I have seen these types of gadgets before, that connect to your phone via Bluetooth and serve as a speakerphone. I’ve talked to some folks that had them in their cars, and sometimes the sound quality was – um – less than stellar. I wanted to see if this could be a way to get better sound, safer handsfree telecommunications, and a hint of style in my ancient ride.the unit itself is a smallish black box, roughly 4×5 inches and an inch to a half inch tapered top to bottom. On the front, there are six buttons hidden under touch-friendly locations: the two lower corners are volume controllers, the top center activates the phone, and the center two sides allow for voice input or connection to an FM unit. (More on these later.) the bottom center has a mute button for turning off the mic while on a phone call.

Setup is simple – turn it on, and it’s in pairing mode. You’re given voice instructions on how to pair, and it works with every phone I tried, as well as my iPad. Right out of the box, my unit had good battery charge, so I could test it walking around the house. It was quite nice to just take it to another room while my iPhone was charging. It was during this time that I began to explore the other buttons. I clicked the one labeled “Voice” and the friendly voice instructor said “say a command.” “go get me a beer” came to mind, but I figured that may be difficult. not knowing what else to do, and the manual being waaaay back on my desk (two rooms away) I held the voice button down to see what would happen. Sure enough, a menu of options was relayed. I tried “Battery” and was told I had three hours talk time remaining. Crazy.

As luck would have it, one of my daughters called about then. the music paused and I heard the phone ring through the device, plus I heard my iPhone vibrating on the desk across the hall. I hit the button with the phone handset on it, and said “hello?” my daughter’s voice came through just as richly as the music had been a few seconds earlier. We talked for a minute or two, and then I asked her how the sound was. she said it sounded just like normal. when we finished talking, I hit the phone icon again, and the music resumed right where it had faded out. Just like I expected. Nice!

There are other commands, like “next Track”, “Redial”, and “Make a call.” These worked as promised in most road conditions. sometimes, however, there would be enough background noise or interference or something to prevent the command from working, or the unit just didn’t understand my accent. (I tried to enunciate. Really, I did.) Usually, I could just repeat the command and it was fine.

The FM button can be used to find a blank spot on the FM dial to use for broadcasting to your in-car stereo. I tried this several times, but it’s not worth the hassle. Our area has a huge number of local radio stations and repeater transmitters, so there is no single band that will stay unused driving more than 5-10 miles. the setup is easy (hit “FM”, then tap the volume up button, and it’ll scan. Tap FM to stay on a frequency, then tune your stereo to that station.) since my antenna is right outside the post that the visor is mounted on, it’s nice and close, for fairly good reception, but it’s still spotty enough that I prefer leaving it in the built-in speakers of the Freeway.

Using the Freeway for music playback over a few weeks, I found that the eleven hours or more that a full charge promises in talk time is about half what playback from your phone will get you. It’s still good enough to last most long commutes and short trips, but if you’re going all day in the car, you may need a charge midday. Charging is done through an (included) USB to mini USB cable, either with your computer or the included car power port plug. the only thing that I found that really irritated me is that the power plug doesn’t recharge my phone.

The voice options included are pretty neat, but there are ways to extend this through services on your phone. this will vary by operating system, your budget, and what you want to do, but I tested several services for my iPhone. one let me dictate a note to Evernote, which was pretty cool. (It took three hours to post, which made me think it hadn’t worked, but I was pleased when it finally showed up, word perfect, in both text and audio format.) Jabra has a page of apps and solutions linked from the device homepage. (Beware, the site is a Flash and cookie-crazy place! things jump around on every page.)

The results of my testing? Well, I obviously like it, and had no real issues using or living with it. It’s certainly nice to walk out to the car, click a switch, hear the nice lady say, “Power On. Connected.” and then hit another button and say “Play” to start my iPhone for a drive. Ending a session is as easy as sliding the switch off – “Power Off” – the phone pauses playback automatically, never leaving my pocket. What’s the sound like? Well, it depends. when I want to crank up a song on a cool summer evening and roll down the windows and sing along – this is not the unit you want. It will not match playback of even my ten-year-old factory standard Toyota sound system. but with it right in your face, it’s pretty full, and far better than your phone’s built-in speaker.

Being on the visor means it can get overheated when I fold down the visor, and this position also causes the sound to go into the windshield, rather than my face. What’s worse is if someone calls while you’re driving into the sun. you have to flip the visor back up for the duration of the call. you could clip the unit on the underside of the visor if you had to drive a long way, I guess. but this is just one of the limitations of a basically fine design. (Operating temp range recommendations also mean taking it out of the car if you park in the sun for long periods or during the winter. Basically, treat it the same way you would your phone or laptop and it’ll work just fine.)

Overall, I give it 4.5 stars – it’s well designed and constructed, works as planned and expected, but the sound is just a little thin for use in a car if you want to “experience” music, and sometimes the visor mounting can be an issue. Worth the price, as long as you’re not expecting arena-quality sound.

NY Tech Meetup: Flying Objects, Barking Dogs and the Mayor’s Tech Goal (#NYTM)

Last night, the NY Tech Meetup presenters demonstrated their new products and apps to a 850-person crowd of attendees at NYU’s Kimmel Center at Washington Square.  Director Nate Westheimer said, “The thing I am most excited about is the diversity of applications that you are going to see – everything from augmented reality to extraordinarily interactive iPad applications to  other applications which will make real things appear on stage.”  There was even a demo of a remote controlled flying object created by a group of NYU-based computer engineers who won the August Hack-of-the-Month. The grayish object of four round, wheel-like sections with tiny lights did in fact rise above the stage and over the first few rows of the audience, but its creators kept it low for fear of setting off the fire sprinklers.

StockTouch, a mobile information experience, was described by founder Steve de Brun as a tactile, mobile, powerful map of the stock market that updates throughout the course of the day through market trading hours.  “It’s a new way of visualizing the stock market.” Dibsie demoed itself as a self service platform for businesses to post discounts and deals.  “So for users it’s a platform that learns your preferences for deals or services,” said  founder Dylan Fareed.

Kevin Marshall of KnowAboutIt explained that his application was, “The best way to discover most relevant and engaging links lost in your social streams such as Twitter, Facebook, and RSS feeds by your preference. our average users have 300 to 400 things passing through those systems; it’s impossible to read all that stuff. You’re at an event like this Meetup, how do you know if the most interesting thing didn’t pass through Twitter just now?”

Another demo came from Voyurl, a discovery engine that recycles user’s data leftovers to make it more powerful via personalized content recommendations and analytics. “We recycle all that throw-away data that you are generating all day long when you browse around the web,” said Adam Leibsohn.  We think that technology makes people do too much work, so we are the first feedback-free discovery engine.  You don’t have to authorize any network or give us your identification. we work in the background all the time, once and always, and we feed you stuff based on your behavior as an indicator of preference — not your networks. “

The mobile app Want! was described as something that allows users to playfully express themselves by capturing, sharing and remembering things that they want. “There are 93 million tweets that have happened over the last few months  that contain the words ‘I want’,” said Gene DeRose, “ and this maps perfectly to our business  with two exceptions:  One you have to filter out all the smutty stuff and two you have filter out, if you choose, all the Justin Bieber stuff.  It turns out that 3% of any cut of pages has something to do with him.”

Chad Gallagher explained the reason for creating a personalized event recommendation platform called Brom.ly, in which he is a co-founder, was that “We realized that our team had a problem: we didn’t know what was going around us at any given time and in particular, we didn’t have a place to go that recommended the coolest things for us to do based on who we are and what we like.  So we created a place to go that aggregates everything around you and personalizes it directly for you. So we look at your Facebook interests, events you’ve attended in the past, things you liked or dislike and we create what you would find is the most interesting.  I logged into it tonight to see what it looked like and the first thing that was recommended to me was a bar crawl going on in the West Village –and I’m going to it.”

Also of note was Zarrly, a powered marketplace that lets users buy and sell anything with people nearby.  Bo Fishback talked about one of his favorite posts, “Someone posted $50 to have somebody come to their house and pretend to break in. they wanted to know if their dog was actually a watch dog or if it was just all bark.”  Conde Nast’s Idea Flight is a productivity app that allows a user to share presentations across a room of other devices and control the experience from their iPad, and 110 Stories is an augmented reality iPhone app that enables users to orient their phone towards the former location of the Twin Towers, then augment in the image of the towers and share their story.

Also on hand was Seth Pinsky,  the president of NYC Economic Development Corporation, “The tech scene here in New York is really exploding;  we’re seeing an incredible growth in the volume  of business being created, as well as attention being paid to NY businesses from the venture capital community. In the last couple of years NY has actually, for the first time, surpassed Massachusetts as the Number 2 destination for venture capital investment for tech businesses. I think that is an incredible vote of confidence in the city – what Mayor Bloomberg is focused on is not just our securing our Number 2 position, but taking aim at Number 1 – we would like NY to be the capital of innovation for the 21st century.”

Tilt-Shift Point-and-Shoot Camera Makes Tiny Worlds Without Accessories

August 2nd, 2011 by: Technabob

For those of you who aren’t familiar with tilt-shift photography, it’s a technique which produces cool scenes where everything looks like it’s in miniature. the effect is generally something best acheived by photography buffs with custom lens rigs, or simulated with software.

However, now tilt-shift photos are easy for anyone to take, thanks to this handy tilt-shift point-and-shoot camera.

The guys over at the always awesome Photojojo dug up this cool pocket-cam called the NeinGrenze 5000T, which has a built-in tilted lens rig, which creates not only tilt-shift images, but video as well. Images shot with the camera’s cheap 5 megapixel sensor have  a cool lo-fi look to them, including some pretty dramatic fringing to really give your pics some style. it also has a few other color effect modes built in, but it’s the tilt-shift lens that really makes it shine.

The tilt-shift images shown here were all shot with the NeinGrenze camera, and I have to say they look pretty great. They certainly look way better than any tilt-shift images I’ve managed to make with iPhone apps or Photoshop plug-ins which claim to create such effects. I guess there’s still something to be said for real-world optics.

Another thing I do like is that it offers shutter speeds from 1/4 to 1/3000th of a second and offers exposure control. the rest of the camera’s specs are pretty basic – a 2.4″ LCD display, built in-flash, 8x digital zoom. Best part about the tilt-shift camera is that it’s pretty reasonably priced. it sells for $149.99 over at Photojojo, and starts shipping later this month.

The Ultrabooks are coming: super thin laptops for travellers

If there’s one thing that iPads have done beyond giving travellers a better inflight entertainment option, it’s the wake-up call they have given the laptop industry.

Apple may only hold 10% of the computer market, but if iPads were factored in, that share rockets to 22%. It’s not a hypothetical figure, either — it’s quite clear that laptop sales from all manufacturers are dropping as sales of iPads grow.

PC makers are fighting back, both with their own tablets, and a new range of ultra-thin laptops that takes full computing power and puts it in a package that’s light enough to take everywhere.

Chip giant Intel calls the category “Ultrabooks”, and given that tablets like the iPad largely don’t use Intel chips, it’s obvious why Intel has a strong interest in Intel-based computers getting smaller and thinner.

Super-thin and light notebooks will be a huge benefit for business travellers though, many of whom are required to lug around a 3cm-thick, 3 kg notebook mandated by their corporate IT department.

Intel says an Ultrabook should have the following characteristics:

Size: less than 2cm thick Weight: less than 1.4kg Instant on: the laptop must resume from sleep instantly Storage: ultra-fast flash memory chips, not spinning mechanical hard disks Processing grunt: no chips older than the current generation Intel Sandy Bridge Core i3/i5/i7 processors. Connectivity: Either USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt ports. Mini-HDMI or mini-DisplayPort for video. no more chunky VGA ports — they just won’t fit! 3G: option to have 3G built in to the notebook Battery: four to six hours battery life Price: less than $US1,000.

The specification is a tall order against the price-tag — notebooks with those sorts of specifications have typically fit into the “ultra premium” category, targeted at top level executives who can justify spending $4,000 on a laptop.

However, Apple has demonstrated that it’s entirely possible to make a laptop that meets the requirements — the recently updated MacBook Air jumps all but one of the hurdles, and scrapes in at US$999.

And that’s a notebook that doesn’t even carry the “Ultrabook” branding, as Apple never lets a lowly part supplier sully its shining aluminium branding with silly category names.

The one criterion Apple doesn’t meet is the option of inbuilt 3G, due to Apple’s apparent view that the most cost efficient way to get 3G to a laptop is via a tethered iPhone, not a second 3G modem with its own SIM card. of course, it also gives Mac users a strong incentive to buy an iPhone if they’re not already using one.

Ultrabooks coming soon

The Asus UX21 is the first Windows-based Ultrabook to be announced. Just 7mm thin at its thickest point and 3mm at its thinnest, the UX21 is phenomenally lightweight.

It has an 11.6″ screen with a 1366×768 resolution (equivalent to what’s found in many 13 – 15″ notebooks) and a chiclet-style keyboard.

It will run low-voltage Intel Core i3/i5/i7 processors — the same ones used in the MacBook Air.

In fact, it bears more than a passing resemblance to the MacBook Air, with its ‘unibody’ carved from aluminium.

It’s due for release in September.

Acer, HP and Dell are also said to be planning Ultrabooks, though none of them have revealed their plans yet.

How To Activate Edge/3G On iPad GSM, MTNL & BSNL APN Settings

Well, if you belongs to India and recently bought an iPad 3G for yourself, you may want to activate 3G services. the process of activating 3G or edge services on your iPad could be a tad different from what you have across on an iPhone. As a matter of fact that iPad doesn’t support phone feature, you may experience issues while configuring your iPad to send and receive data packets.

I have personally seen people who seems to be bit confused when it comes to understand about the functionality. Countries such as India where operators do sell micro-sims and claims to have iPad plans doesn’t know how to enable them on it. To make it easier for you, we have decided to write a tutorial on it.

1) Firstly, go to Settings.app on the springboard.

2) Search for ‘Cellular data’ option and select it.

3) on another section of the screen, note that cellular data and data roaming must be turned ‘On’.

4) Now, navigate to APN settings and follow the instructions below:

Enter the APN settings depending upon the carrier. we are providing APN settings for MTNL & BSNL.

For MTNL, APN: “pps3g” for prepaid customers and “mtnl3g” for postpaid customers.

For BSNL, APN:  bsnlnet

Don’t enter anything in Username & Password.

4) Restart your iPad 3G. If everything goes well, you will be able to enjoy 3G services on your iPad.

Let’s know if you face any problems in the comment section. we will definitely help you.

PS: You should have an appropriate plan activated for the uninterrupted data packets. otherwise, you will get ‘safari cannot open the page’ error.

The Globe and Mail

Back in 1998, when TV was emerging from the dark ages into the bright new world of digital media, Keith Wells had a vision.

A sports reporter for BCTV at the time, Mr. Wells was covering the Winter Olympics in Nagano, an assignment which, due to budget constraints, consisted of a live two-minute report each day, beamed back to his newsroom in Vancouver via satellite at a cost of $750 a minute.

  • Guerrilla marketing can be like warfare

Meanwhile, he noticed other journalists were shooting footage with miniature DV cameras and using desktop software to edit their stories on-site, but lacked a quick and cost-effective way of delivering that content to their newsrooms.

“they couldn’t feed video easily because of bandwidth limitations,” he recalled. “But with the new mini-DVs and programs like Final cut Pro, I saw the possibility of being able to shoot, report, edit and feed a completed story from anywhere in the world.”

Thirteen years and several quantum leaps in technology later, Mr. Wells is the founder of SendtoNews, an Internet platform that allows journalists and other content creators to deliver high-definition, broadcast quality content cheaper and faster than ever before.

The backbone of the company’s business is a high-speed file transfer utility, capable of uploading massive wireless data feeds in minutes. the technology was originally developed to deliver trailers for major movies studios.

The news clips, press releases and background footage uploaded by SendtoNews clients are linked to Amazon cloud “server farms” around the world and made available free of charge to newsrooms.

SendtoNews clients – universities, government institutions, media relation firms and sports organizations – are charged $50 each time a newsroom uses the materials, up to a maximum of $200.

“It’s a kind of pro-active media relations tool that connects content providers with newsrooms,” Mr. Wells said during an interview at the SendToNews head office near Victoria’s inner Harbour. “our customers are any kind of an organization that has a story to tell.”

A self-described “serial inventor,” Mr. Wells earned a reputation for devising technical solutions during his 20-year broadcasting career, including a portable teleprompter called the ProPrompter, and the SeeEye2Eye teleprompter designed for webcam use. He sold the rights to both products to Bodelin, an Oregon company specializing in technical accessories.

A long-time sports reporter, Mr. Wells recognized that organizers of sporting events not covered by the mainstream media needed a fast and inexpensive way of delivering clips of their events to TV newsrooms in time for broadcast deadlines.

“Back in the day, the PR people at Hastings Park used to film their feature race on a Saturday and then send the tape to the BCTV newsroom in a cab,” he recalled. “now Hastings Park is one of our customers.”

After researching and developing the basic prototype for SendToNews, Mr. Wells launched his company in 2008 and partnered with local software experts Marc Hoelscher and Peter Beblo to design the system.

The first big test came during the 2010 Winter Olympics, when the company landed a deal to embed itself in the Robson Square media centre, a facility that hosted more than 1,400 news outlets from around the world.

SendtoNews provided an easy fix for new organizations that weren’t allowed access to official Olympic venues, but still needed a cheap and effective way of filing background stories about the region.

It’s not as instantaneous as a satellite feed – a 200MB clip still takes about two minutes to upload, depending on the connection – but the SendToNews delivery system is already “100 times faster” than a conventional FTP software, and the technology is evolving.

More importantly, the service is “disproportionately inexpensive” compared to satellite delivery, and far more efficient than mass mail-outs of CD-laden press packages, a practice that persists, despite the advent of new technology.

SendtoNews has roughly 200 content providers, including the RCMP, the Western Hockey League, the B.C. government, Simon Fraser University and the University of Victoria, along with about 500 newsroom subscribers, mostly in North America.

Mr. Wells is currently attending the World Aquatic Championships in Shanghai, helping Swimming Canada package its coverage of the event and showcasing SendToNews to other media outlets from around the world.

Swimming Canada communications director Martin Richard said his organization receives limited international media attention outside the Olympics, and SendToNews offers a cost-effective way to “showcase our sport and tell our athletes’ stories on an ongoing basis.”

The rapid evolution of the smart phone has given SendtoNews an edge, too. It’s now possible for reporters to produce and file completed news stories from remote locations with nothing more than an iPhone and a wireless connection.

In April, SendtoNews unveiled a new mobile application that allows the delivery of high-resolution video from an iPhone 4 direct to newsrooms around the world.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation recently purchased 100 iPhones equipped with the SendtoNews app for its reporters in the field. another client, KGO radio in San Francisco, is using the SendtoNews app for instant wireless delivery of audio clips from breaking news stories.

“our platform is tuned up to accept mobile video, and we have this app to deliver content in the highest quality possible … so from that standpoint, we are right on the cutting edge,” Mr. Wells said. “We are going to make some noise in this space, there’s no doubt about it.’
