The IPhone is a serious business and consumer type of phone, a very Smartphone.

A Smartphone is a personal digital assistant, PDA. Today’s Smartphone’s typically serve as portable music players, cameras, high resolution screens, some use touch screen technology, GPS navigation, WIFI and mobile broadband access as well as being able to call and text.

A smart phone runs a complete mobile operating system, Apple IOS, Google Anorid, Microsoft Windows phone 7, Nokia Symbian, there are many other Smartphone’s with their own operating systems.

The IPhone made by apple was first introduced in 2007 as Apple IPhone 2g or edge it was then discontinued in 2008 after selling 6.7 million units. Apple then in 2008 introduced the apple 3g,at this point everybody knew and wanted an IPhone. in late 2010 the Apple IPhone 3g was discontinued. Then later in the year the IPhone 3gs was released and is still in production.

However the new IPhone 4 has been released from June 2010 to present day with the slogan “This changes everything. Again” and with 3 million sales within the first day at £600.00 to £800.00 pounds each IPhone is blooming with business.

IPhone applications are basically little programs made especially for the Smartphone and operating system they have programmed; for example the Apple using IOS software, only apple application software can be used on an apple device, such as an IPhone, IPod or IPad.

So what is an application, an application is a programme that runs on your IPhone like how paint runs on your pc. IPhone applications come in many different genres for example game applications which is an application made especially for fun and boredom, whether it’s the highly recognised Sims 3 for £4.99 for or angry Birds free to download.

Other categories are things like time wasters or silly things like squeeze a spot or ninja fruit slice applications which 90 percent of the time are free and cure boredom momentary.

Other genres are books; download books onto your apple device and read to your heart’s content. Others such as Educational applications teach you things or have information within them.

In all there are many categories here are a few main ones, games, books, entertainment , gadgets, educational, business, finance, health and wellness, social networking, maps and navigation, music and audio, news, photo and video, productivity , reference and books, shopping, sports, test centre, travel, themes, utilities and finally weather.

Phone Application software is very important to a business. The Mobile Web is all about discovering the right content when you need it there are currently 3 billion mobile phones worldwide compared with less than 1 billion PCs. Mobile devices are fast becoming the primary interface to the Internet for the majority of users, and this “always available” communication service is providing value to a rapidly growing subscriber base.

Business’s find applications a helpful tool for example Amazon one of the UK’s largest online shopping has a application you can download and buy straight from them, easier simpler and still making money.

Example two an accountant is out with an client and needs to provide a service to the customer, the IPhone or Smartphone comes out and using their own software that’s been specially made can show the customer there and then what they need to know to make business.

Example 3 a website consultant goes out to a client and wants to show them the stats on their website they take out there already preloaded Smartphone with their very own application and show their customer on the spot, instead of going back to the office and emailing it.

Applications can have many different functions within it, whether its purchasing something through a payment gateway, news feed, contact forums and even maps.

When it comes to businesses using application software they can use others software that they have made and pay for it and download it, or they may decide to buy and create their own.

Creating your own application: creating your own application for your business can be tricky and hard on the pocket, first you business needs to know what their application will do function wise and the design of it.

Once you have told the creators of the applications they will get on and make it checking in with you at every step.

Once complete you now own an application and can let other business’s purchase this or download it for free, although this is a very costly, and can range easily from £1000.00 pounds to megabucks.

When it comes to applications the competition for the most is fierce, Apple has 2225,000 apps, Android has 70,000 apps, blackberry app world has 7,200 apps, ovi store has 13,000 and IPad app. store has 11,000.

Applications are on the rise, in the UK in June 2010 21% of us had used apps; it’s now risen to 71% of us, due to the revolution of the Smartphone’s.

iPhone 5 rumour roll-up for the week ending July 29

The iOSsphere is buzzing this week as “evidence” surfaces of schematic drawings and photos of new iPhone cases for a new iPhone, a furtive photo of a commuter using an “amazing” device, facial recognition software with vast implications, and a report that Apple plans to become a weapons manufacturer.

Evidence is to rumours like wind is to sails: it fills them out and drives forward the ship of speculation.

“Rumors are like songbirds; they sound filling but make a poor feast.” — W. Michael Gear and Kathleen O’Neal Gear, “People of the Nightland”

Third-party case schematics reveal big changes for iPhone 5.

A bigger screen, curved back and fewer buttons will define iPhone 5. Those claims, by U.K.-based MobileFun, are based on the site’s analysis of a schematic of a new third-party iPhone case, from one manufacturer, and a picture of a mockup of a case from a second manufacturer.

IN PICTURES: Inside iOS 5

In comments, one wag summed up the resulting phone: “Wow it looks like … an iPhone 3.”

From the schematic and the case, MobileFun concludes:

– the screen size is “extended considerably” from the current 3.5 inches to 4, by minimizing the bezel around it on all four sides, and extending the screen from edge to edge.

– the phone’s rear panel curves around its edges, similar to the iPhone 3G. (Oddly, MobileFun extends this observation: “This likely means that the back will be metal, and could serve as a replacement for the iPhone 4’s unique side antennae …” That seems a stretch since making a curved metal rear case the antenna means the user’s entire palm would be touching the antenna, not just his fingers.)

– in place of the current physical home screen button, there is a small, touch-sensitive oval area which takes up the middle half of the bottom border. “This area might be used for unique multi-touch gestures, given its increased size.”

– side buttons are shifted to the opposite side of the phone, with the lock button close to the camera, the volume buttons moved further toward the bottom.

MobileFun has a handy July 28 update at the bottom of its story, summarizing and linking to other news and technology sites that picked up on the story, adding assessment and insights of their own. CNET UK, for example, noted “that even with the expanded home button, it would be difficult to get more than a single finger in there, meaning that the gestures for that area are likely to be specialized one-finger gestures.”

Another purported iPhone 5 case, a silicone sheath in a luscious shade of lime green and allegedly indicating a thinner model, was also posted by 9to5Mac.

We have found the iPhone 5.

Actually the 9to5Mac headline reads, “Have we found the iPhone 5?” but it’s one of those rhetorical questions.

A “tipster” sent the website two grainy photos of a fellow commuter, apparently on a train, using a phone the tipster didn’t recognize. Ergo, it must be the iPhone 5 or a prototype of it.

“Our tipster has had an iPhone 3GS and currently has an iPhone 4,” 9to5Mac revealed, breathing heavily. “He knows his iPhones and iPods and this was like nothing he’s ever seen.”

Like. nothing. He’s. Ever. seen.

Probably because he wasn’t able to see very much of it. Here’s one of the two photos, so you can judge for yourself.

The tipster says it was “almost EVO-like” in screen size, a reference to the big-screen, Android-based HTC Evo 4G smartphone released last year; that it was thinner but wider than the current iPhone, with rounded edges, and a curved back of glass or plastic.

“He said it looked too amazing to be built by anyone besides Apple (fanboy!).” I may not be able to define magic but I know it when I see it, or even partially see it.

The behavior of the commuter is, apparently, further evidence this is the iPhone 5. he was “furtive,” says 9to5Mac, and according to the tipster, “It seemed apparent that he was trying to hide what he had more than the average smartphone user.”

The user was probably just trying to follow Apple’s “Field Guide for ‘Next iPhone’ Prototype Testers,” Rule 57: “Try to hide the device more than the average smartphone user, but don’t look furtive.”

iPhone 5 will have sophisticated, sought-after facial recognition, with obviously vast implications.

That’s according to 9to5Mac’s mark Gurman, whose online post about this scoop was filled with an almost thrilling sense of being thrilled.

In September 2010, Apple acquired a Swedish company, Polar Rose, which, according to this Wikipedia entry, offered a service, based on its facial recognition software, that let users “put names to the faces of people whose photographs appear on the web, and to then find other pictures of the same individuals.”

“Less than a year after this purchase, we have discovered what Apple actually intends to do with this software,” Gurman announces.

Apple is going to incorporate this code into iOS 5 and “open up facial recognition as a public developer API for iOS 5 applications,” according to Gurman. these “highly sophisticated” APIs are CIFaceFeature, which can figure out “through an image where a person’s mouth and eyes are located,” and CIDetector, which is a “resource within the operating system that processes images for face detection,” a capability that “presumably would power face detection via live motion imagery.”

In case you don’t realize the implications of this technology, Gurman lays it out: “The implications of this are obviously vast.” and it has “vast amounts of uses.” and this is obviously so obvious that Gurman doesn’t give a single example of how it might actually be used or why it’s “sought after.” he does refer to the Photo Booth application originally in Mac OS X 10.5 in 2007 and more recently on iPad 2, though neither seems to use facial recognition.

It’s going to be called “iPhone 5 Damnit!”

Whatever the Next iPhone ends up looking like, one thing is certain: Apple is way too smart to call it “iPhone 4S.” Stuff.tv, “where you can find tech news that’s wry but not dry,” settles this nonsense once and for all.

Rumors of the iPhone 4S have been circulating for months, most often as a model that keeps the basic look of the current iPhone 4 but adds a dual-core CPU and some other internal goodies, and runs iOS 5, but sometimes as a genuinely new design for a lower-priced iPhone model.

Stuff insists this is all … stuff. iPhone 4s “is exactly what the next iPhone won’t be called. Why? because consumers – that’s you and us – are easily confused.”

So this analytical rumor starts by insulting you and us.

“Apple has infiltrated the mainstream by building computers, phones and — more recently — tablets that people find intuitive and easy to use. it is not a company that likes to cower behind indecipherable product names. … it is not going to confuse and alienate its massive, and still growing, customer base by calling its next phone the iPhone 4S.”

One can picture the instant consumer backlash. Plunging sales. Scathing reviews. Savage posts in online forums about the indecipherable indescribable insufferable 4S moniker. “Steve: PLEASE give us a label we love for the phone we love.” “That’s it! I’ve had it. As soon as my AT&T contract expires, I’m buying a Symbian.”

BeatWeek also insists that the 4S “is now officially dead to the world. … It’s clear now that it never existed, not even on Apple’s drawing board, as a commercial product.”

iPhone 5 will be announced in the second week of September; Apple to become weapons supplier.

Machine translation let MacRumors pick up on a story in the Taiwan-based China Times, revealing, according to MacRumors, that iPhone 5 will be released during the second week of September, with a starting order of 4 million units, and suppliers said to be readying a trial run of 400,000 units.

This seems like an optimistic reading of the original Chinese language story, to which MacRumors helpfully links for all of you Chinese linguists. but copy/paste the original into Google Translate and … well, things become a bit more murky.

The headline reads: “New iPhone 9 second week of listing.” Whoa. iPhone 9? That ought to launch a frenzy of brand new rumors all by itself.

“Long-awaited new iPhone plan for the second week of September (September 6 to 15) choose the listing, the first batch of 400 million units in terms of shipments, component suppliers will ship before this week trial production of 400,000 units.” That sounds vaguely like what MacRumors thinks it means.

“Hon Hai is mainly responsible for the assembly is expected to victory, 8-9 monthly revenue forecast is expected to be high, and the remaining components plant performance will be higher.” Uh.

But our favorite nugget from China Times is the revelation, strangely ignored by MacRumors, that Apple plans to become an arms manufacturer: “In addition, Apple iPad another version of a deadly weapon components supplier in less than a possible extension to market before Thanksgiving, but also change the mining machine sea tactics, the first shipments will substantially pulled, the appeal of ‘quality without additional price’ approach swept flat-panel market.”

BoyGeniusReport has a source, presumably one who speaks English, also claiming an early September release of the phone, and concludes that Apple will, therefore, unveil iPhone 5 in late August.

Why Apple should create a downmarket version of its best-selling product.

iPhone 4. Click image to expand. Will Apple release a cheaper iPhone? The iPhone is at a crossroads. It’s been four years since Apple first released its super-duper-wonderphone, and you don’t have to be a fanboy to appreciate how thoroughly this single gadget has upended the tech industry. The iPhone wasn’t the first smartphone, it wasn’t the first touchscreen device, and it wasn’t the first app-enabled mobile computer (indeed, the first iPhone didn’t run apps). still, the iPhone was something novel—a smart, intuitive, beautifully designed, futuristic-seeming gizmo that was immediately lapped up by consumers and wholly copied by rivals. for Apple, the iPhone has been a godsend. In 2010, the company reported $25 billion in revenue from the iPhone alone—that was about 40 percent of its total annual revenue—and the phone’s growth shows no signs of slowing.

The trouble is, Apple’s main rival, Android, also looks unstoppable. Andy Rubin, who heads up Google’s phone division, just reported on Twitter that there are 500,000 “activations” of new Android devices every day around the world, and the number is growing by 4 percent per week. Some of these devices are tablet computers—where Android still lags far, far behind Apple’s iPad—but the vast majority are phones, a sector where Android’s share of sales far surpasses Apple’s. according to the research firm IDC, Android’s worldwide share of the smartphone market is about 40 percent, compared to around 16 percent for Apple’s iOS. In the United States, Android has nearly 50 percent of the smartphone market, while Apple has 29.5 percent. (Android’s share stateside declined by a couple points over the last year, mainly due to the introduction of the iPhone on Verizon.)

What’s fueling Android’s growth? sure, it’s a terrific operating system, and over the last year it’s gotten lots of new apps, too. But in all sorts of ways, Android phones can’t match the polish and power of the iPhone. The main reason that Android is capturing a bigger slice of the phone market is price. Every major American mobile carrier now offers at least a few Android phones for free with a contract. The iPhone 4, by comparison, sells for $199 with a contract (you can also get the 2009-era iPhone 3GS for $50 with a contract). Apple’s prices look even steeper if you consider the market for “unlocked phones”—that is, phones that sell for full price, without a contract. a new, unlocked iPhone 4 will set you back $649. There are dozens of unlocked Android phones that sell for less than $200.

The numbers seem to mark a clear path for Apple: It needs to make a cheaper iPhone. and it needs to do it now.

But how? What would a cheaper iPhone look like, what would it do, and how would Apple make sure that such a device doesn’t eat into its revenues? Tech pundits have been predicting the release of a low-priced iPhone for many years—this week, Chris Whitmore of Deutsche Bank told investors to expect Apple to add a cheap iPhone to its lineup this year. Whitmore, like many others, predicts that Apple will sell the low-priced phone alongside the standard iPhone rather than replace the expensive model. This makes sense when you consider Apple’s strategy with the iPod. The iPod Mini, which the company released in 2004, was a smaller, cheaper version of the original. It quickly became Apple’s best-selling music player. (The Mini was replaced with the Nano in 2005.)

Of course, an iPhone Mini wouldn’t be a very good device. Apple was able to shrink its music player because the screen wasn’t a big part of its utility. The iPhone, though, is a visual gadget, and reducing its screen size would make for a terrible experience. Because its screen will have to be the same size as the expensive iPhone, and because the screen is what makes the iPhone the iPhone, a cheaper version won’t look very different from the expensive one. Apple could certainly add a few design cues to differentiate the two—it could make the cheap one thinner, or it could give it a plastic skin—but the main differences are likely to be internal: The cheaper iPhone might have a slower processor, less RAM, and less onboard storage space. Some wags predict that Apple’s next full-fledged iPhone—presumably called the iPhone 5—will be able to access faster 4G networks, so that could be a another point of differentiation. The “iPhone lite,” as TechCrunch’s MG Siegler has taken to calling the mythical cheap iPhone, might only run on 3G networks.

Apple’s goal, with such a device, would be to sell it at a price of between $200 and $300 without a carrier contract—less than half the price of an unlocked, full-fledged iPhone. This is certainly doable: Apple sells the iPod Touch, which is essentially an iPhone without a cellular radio, for $229. Since the components for adding a radio cost only $16, a $200 unlocked iPhone isn’t a pipe dream. and if Apple can reach that price, it will see huge sales. Horace Dedieu, the smartest Apple analyst on the Web, points out that the vast majority of cell phones across the world are sold without a contract. (The United States and Canada are unique in selling most with a plan; a cheaper, unlocked iPhone could push a lot of people to ditch their mobile contracts, which will anger the carriers—but I doubt Apple cares much about the carriers.) What’s more, growth in the smartphone business will come via the hundreds of millions of people who are expected to switch from dumb phones to smartphones over the next few years. a cheap iPhone that sells without a contract will be irresistible to many of these customers—it could boost Apple’s sales by several hundred percent.

But there’s a danger in this model, too. Because the cheap iPhone would be visually and functionally similar to the expensive iPhone, you’d have to imagine that many (if not most) customers who would otherwise have purchased the expensive phone will choose to go with the cheaper one. Financially, this wouldn’t be a disaster for Apple—you can bet that it would make healthy profits off the cheap iPhone. It would, however, represent a fundamental shift to Apple’s business model. So far, the iPhone has been all about profit, even at the expense of market share.

The other potential danger is that the cheap phone could fuel consumer disappointment. Apple markets the iPhone as the best phone anywhere. But how would it market a cheaper model—one that looks nearly identical to the expensive phone but does a lot less? The company would need to walk the tightrope of proclaiming the cheapie phone’s amazingness without creating the expectation that it would do as much as a pricier iPhone. Maybe the tag line could be, “iPhone Lite. Relax—it’s slower!”

Given the risks of releasing a cheaper iPhone, would Apple be willing to turn its mobile strategy on its head? its history suggests two opposing theories. on the one hand, there’s the Mac, where Apple decided to forget about market share and stick with profits. That led Apple to “lose” the PC wars, but it was a pretty good loss—Apple now makes more money selling a single Mac than HP does from selling seven PCs. The other path is what Apple did with the iPod—it relentlessly lowered cost and diversified its line-up, making sure that there was a music player for every budget. That worked out fantastically as well: at its peak about five years ago, the iPod represented more than half of Apple’s revenue.

After weighing those two possibilities, I’m betting that Apple goes downmarket. It’s not just because the financial opportunity in releasing a cheap phone seems too good to pass up. as Dedieu points out, Steve Jobs seems to regard Apple’s Mac strategy to have been an enormous blunder. In 2004, Jobs told Newsweek that at “the critical juncture in the late ’80s, when they should have gone for market share, [Apple’s management] went for profits.” He added: “They made obscene profits for several years. and their products became mediocre. and then their monopoly ended with Windows 95. they behaved like a monopoly, and it came back to bite them, which always happens.”

If Android is the new Windows, then the path for Apple is obvious: It can’t afford to rest on its profits any longer. a cheap iPhone has got to be around the corner.

IPhone Factory Unlock Service

IPhones are among the most commercially successful mobile phones in history, so naturally, millions of people around the world wish to get their hands on one of them, regardless if it is the latest version of the phone or not. This, however, is something that most have trouble doing because the thing about the iPhone is that it does not come unlocked. in the countries where the iPhone is officially offered, carriers lock the phone so that it can only be used with their service (as well, it usually happens that iPhones are locked only to work in one country). There is a solution for this, however: iPhone Factory Unlocking Service. This service basically consists on unlocking the iPhone so that it can be used on other networks (with other carriers). For example, in the United States the iPhone is exclusive to AT&T; unlocking the phone would enable the user to go with other carriers different from ATT&T. Now, what are the benefits of this service? well, for one, you won’t have to worry about having to jailbreak your phone; this will not be necessary. For another, the iPhone factory unlocking service is done with an iPhone factory unlock code, so you will not have to worry about losing your phone’s guarantee (this will not be the case). Finally, think about this. after the phone is unlocked, you will be able to update the software and any other features via iTunes (as well, keep in mind that the unlock code will be obtained through iTunes as well). If any of this does not work, or if you are unsatisfied with the unlocking of the phone at any point in time, you get your money back. If you need the official iPhone 4 factory unlock service, the official iPhone 3GS factory unlock service, the official iPhone 3G factory unlock service, or the official iPhone 2G factory unlock service, we can offer service. we can help unblock any iPhone model operating under any carrier; boot loaders, basebands, and firmware versions can also be dealt with, no problem. iPhones are excellent phones; apart from great wireless communications, they also provide their owners with a wide variety of other features, including camera, calculator, music, games, etc. unfortunately, the iPhone is a phone not so easy to come by, as it has been exclusively assigned to certain networks in certain countries. several unlocking services are offered online, this is true. however, none are as effective and safe as the iPhone factory unlocking service that Unlock iPhone provides. So, if you manage to get your hands on an iPhone (whatever version) but you are having problems with getting it unblocked, go ahead and visit unlockiphone.im/. you will find that our service is different from all of the other services available out there. our iPhone factory unlocking service is official, so much so that it can be done through iTunes directly. Do you need more convincing? Remember, if it does not work then you will get your money back, guaranteed.

HP TouchPad Review by 3G.co.uk

in the past year or so, the choice of tablets has grown enormously, so you’re not limited to the iPad. But for anyone who can’t get to grips with Android or is not familiar with BlackBerrys, so feels a PlayBook isn’t for them, there hasn’t been anything else. until now. Because HP has brought out the HP TouchPad, which runs on its own operating system, and a jolly good job it does too.

First impressions

the TouchPad manages to appear lightweight and yet still be sturdy enough to feel as though it is a classy piece of kit. Weightwise, it’s about on a par with a 3G iPad (although bear in mind this tablet is Wi-Fi only – a 3G version is due to be launched later in the year). Unlike the iPad it has a plastic casing (so we suspect that HP could, if it saw fit, add a SIM card slot at some stage). But where it is the same as the iPad is in the fact that it has a home button at the bottom of the screen – the Centre key. It is oval in shape, and when you have a notification or message, it flashes gently.

the TouchPad features a 9.7in display that boasts a 768×1,024 resolution, but it is not quite as slender and light as the iPad. the glossy, plastic chassis means it weighs 130g more and is 2mm thicker – mind you, unless you hold one in each hand, we’re not sure you’d really notice the difference.

Camera

There is a front-facing snapper for making video calls, but don’t look on the back for another camera because there isn’t one. the first iPad didn’t have one either and many were the comments made about it, so we suspect HP might get some negative backlash for this too. as it is, we’re not so sure it’s much of a problem – after all it’s pretty hard to hold a tablet and take pictures or movies with it, anyway. and most tablet owners are likely to be carrying a mobile with a camera anyway.

on the bottom of the tablet you’ll find a Micro USB connector – but don’t try to plug in an ordinary mobile phone charger – like BlackBerry’s PlayBook the TouchPad needs a high-voltage charger. There’s a power button and 3.5mm headphone jack on the top of the device and a volume rocker on the right.

the speaker sits on the left edge (unlike the iPad’s which is on the back corner), so it is well designed for watching video in landscape mode, or listening to music.

WebOS

Of course, as we all know, it doesn’t matter how good the hardware is, it’s the software that really makes or breaks a device – and HP has a trick up its sleeve. It was HP that bought up Palm, which brought us the Treo and Pre mobile phones, as well as the Palm Pilot. and it’s the top-notch webOS that appeared on the Palm Pre that has now been turned into a tablet UI – and it does a pretty decent job.

webOS 3.0 doesn’t go down the route of having numerous home screens covered in shortcuts and widgets, as the iPad and Android systems do, instead it has just the one screen. Along the base you’ll see six icons for photos, messaging, calendar, email and browser, plus a launcher button, and it’s here you’ll find all the apps.

we also love the way it all looks – touch the display and it ripples under your finger  – it’s a great effect. Launch an app and you’ll find it fills the display. It can be minimised to a card view on the middle of the screen, simply by touching the Centre key or flicking up from the bottom of the display. when multitasking, apps you’re not using will sit beside each other in card view.

Operating system

we also really like the way you can put multiple cards in stacks to make neat little piles. getting used to the system takes a while, as it doesn’t have the instant intuitiveness of the iPad system, but once you have, it is very rewarding.

Fire up the web browser and the virtual keyboards will pop up. we like the fact that a fifth line appears that shows symbols and numbers, and the fact that it is possible to change the size of the keys to suit the size of your fingers. It also offers a rather clever ‘language’ that allows you to interact with programs. if three parallel lines appear in the bottom left corner of the screen, pull your finger across and a panel will be pulled back to show the previous one.

Playing videos is a smooth experience – and it is Flash compatible. It is not possible to download movies as yet, but we suspect that might change when more apps have been developed.

Applications

We’ve spoken about software – now on to apps, another make or break feature. we probably don’t have to tell you that the App Catalog can in no way compete with the sheer vastness of the App Store. however, there are 8,000 webOS apps that were designed for the Pre – but they are not designed for a tablet and appear in a small window – you can’t even blow then up to fit the screen as you can when using iPhone apps on the iPad.

At the moment, you can only choose from 300 apps designed specifically for the TouchPad, but bear in mind that it is very new and this is sure to increase pretty rapidly. the good news is that you can get Angry Birds for free, as well as Kindle (which is not yet available to UK users) and Facebook. What we do like about it is the fact that there’s a magazine (entitled Pivot) which helps you to choose the apps you want, when you launch the App Catalog. It’s well executed, although many of the apps at the moment are for the US only.

if you’re looking for an app, it’s handy that it shows whether it is for TouchPad- and the search functions works well (Palm always did a good job of searching). the Touchpad can look for contacts, calendar entries, email subjects and plenty more when you type in a search. as you keep typing the suggestions will narrow. You can also carry out a Quick Action – such as updating your Facebook status or starting a new email.

the price of apps is pretty much on a par with Android – which in reality means that there are some rather odd price bands. Apple’s pricing strategy is more simple, while BlackBerry’s is just plain expensive. Mostly, the apps are not too dear, apart from the odd surprising few – the book Kafka Comes to America, for example, comes in at a whopping £20.72.

Under the hood

the TouchPad does benefit from a fast processor, but it can still prove slow. Opening apps can be a touch sluggish although once they’re up and running they usually work just fine. the secret is to leave your apps running in the background (just watch out that they don’t drain your power too much). the accelerometer also suffers from being a tad on the slow side.

as we’ve mentioned the battery life, we must say it’s pretty good – but not up there with that on the iPad 2. You should get a day’s use out of it, and if it’s on standby it should last for a few days. if you use it all day, it will run down in about seven or eight hours. You have two options for charging – use the traditional cable and charge it using the mains, or buy the rather cool Touchstone wireless charger – like that used by the Palm Pre phones. You can also wirelessly print to HP printers and connect with an HP smartphone.

the TouchPad is a bit sparse on features – there’s no GPS, for example, although there is A-GPS that uses your Wi-Fi info for nailing down your location. Nor is there a gyroscope or a SIM card (HP does have a tablet with phone network connections in the pipeline, though).

Pricewise, it matches up to the iPad – with the 16GB WiFi version costing £399, and the 32GB version £479.

Our conclusion

if you’re not after an Apple tablet, this is easily the best choice of 10in tablet on the market (although we know that Samsung has a slim model in the pipeline).

the operating system is intuitive, smooth and easy to get to grips with but until there are a comparable amount of tablet optimised apps on offer, it can’t totally compete with its rivals – and that lag from the processor does put it at a disadvantage.

we would also liked to have seen a rear snapper. however, we reckon once the apps are in place, and HP has worked on some updates to get the tablet moving just a bit faster, the HP TouchPad will become a contender.

Apple launches B2B store for volume App Store purchases

Apple announced last week that it would begin offering volume purchasing for iOS apps, and a week later the program is open for enrollment (but still U.S.-only, unfortunately). Enrolling in the program requires that you be authorized to make purchases for your company, and you’ll also need a valid D-U-N-S number.

Volume purchasing allows businesses an alternative to the App Store for bulk purchases of iOS apps. All paid apps in the App Store are available through the program, at the same price as that listed in the App Store. Note that Apple’s guide to the program doesn’t mention anything about discounts for bulk app purchases, so purchasing Keynote for all 50 of your employees is going to run you close to US$500.

Custom B2B apps are also offered, allowing a level of customization and privacy not offered through the traditional App Store purchasing route. The program also simplifies bulk distribution of iOS apps, allowing distribution of purchased apps’ redemption codes via email, an internal website, or third-party Mobile Device Management.

there doesn’t appear to be any cost to enroll in the program, and it seems to be pretty close to addressing most of the features businesses interested in volume purchasing have been asking for since not long after the App Store’s debut.

iOS 5 to enable Bluetooth in Apple TV, paving the way for apps? – MacDailyNews – Welcome Home

“Just like Apple has done in some of its mobile devices (namely early generations of the iPod touch), Apple has included hidden bluetooth support in their second-generation Apple TV,” mark Gurman reports for 9to5 Mac.

“Bluetooth support is not present within the Apple TV operating system (iOS), but Apple’s next major operating system, iOS 5, will turn on this bluetooth support,” Gurman reports. “Apple is positioning this bluetooth support mainly for keyboards, but perhaps the bluetooth Apple TV will be able to connect to bluetooth iPads, iPhones, and iPod touches.”

Gurman reports, “App support was rumored for inclusion in this second generation Apple TV, and perhaps bluetooth accessory and keyboard support is a sign of apps still coming to the television through Apple’s device.”
