And Nokia says “Sayonara, Japan”

MANILA, Philippines — Protestations to the contrary aside, the technology sector is one capricious and fickle mistress. its past and current whims have been way further than the realms of unpredictability. so much so, that the only thing we can be reasonably certain of is that the future would be no less whimsical.

Products and services win or fall sometimes not due to their merits and shortcomings, but purely based on luck and other hard-to-discern-why and unexpected reasons, such as one aspiring software mogul buying a very unassuming operating system, or a guy in black turtlenecks working his way back to the corporation he co-founded but ditched him earlier.

Of course, this means that sometimes, if not most of the times, the best gadgets and outstanding services do not prosper. Instead, the second rates and the mediocre take center stage and sell millions.

Some would also assert that marketing, as in almost all the other industries, decides everything. this could mean that the better a company’s marketing strategies and their implementation are, the greater the chances are of the products or services becoming bestsellers.

Nokia Says Sayonara

Nokia is leaving Japan, one of the few markets where it has consistently failed to prosper. its mobile phones have never been popular among Japanese consumers who preferred handsets made by local electronics vendors, such as Sharp Corp., and, of course, the iPhone.

Until the high-end Vertu mobile phones became Nokia’s last toehold. And now, the Finnish giant finally throws the towel.

Nokia says it plans to focus its energy on priority businesses. by which, it probably means smartphones powered by Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system.

Here comes Panasonic

The market for solar chargers is getting crowded, with an increasing number of vendors launching their sun-powered charging devices for mobile gadgets.

Japanese electronics giant Panasonic is the latest to make its foray into the solar charger territory with its BG-BL01 charger. actually a combination device, the Panasonic tool combines a solar battery charger with an emergency LED light.

The 152 x 104 x 24mm tool comes with a USB port, two slots for AA-sized batteries, and three LED lights. it requires about 15 hours to fully charge two AA batteries. Fully charged, its LED lights can provide 10 hours of high-bright illumination and up to 60 hours when at their dimmest setting.

Technology More Useful

Advances in technology have made today’s crop of smartphones and other mobile devices impressive and, well, cool. aside from enhancing these electronics toys’ features and capabilities, these technologies also have some less glamorous but definitely more useful applications.

For example, researchers from Oxford University have incorporated some of these technologies to make eyeglasses that can help visually impaired people to see better, if not just as good as other, less visually challenged people.

The glasses are designed to help people living with age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.

These glasses seem low tech. but in my humble opinion, they are way much cooler than the coolest smartphones and tablet computers.

That’s all for the meantime, folks. Join me again next time as we keep on watching IT.

New Contract-Free iPhone in the Fall? Analyst Stokes the Coals – Techland – TIME.com

Just in case you forgot, Apple may introduce a relatively cheap, contract-free iPhone this year. or not.

But Deutsche Bank analyst Chris Whitmore told investors that now is the time. He believes that Apple will launch a mid-range, pre-paid iPhone for $300 to $500 in September, Apple Insider reports.

(READ: Top 10 Back-to-School iPhone Applications)

This, Whitmore believes, is the fabled ‘iPhone 4S,” a new category of device released alongside the iPhone 5. Instead of resembling the iPhone 4, Whitmore thinks it’ll look like a low-end iPod Touch (pictured). if priced at $350, it could still provide Apple with a healthy profit margin while tapping a huge global market of pre-paid phone subscribers. He noted that out of 1.5 billion worldwide customers, two thirds are pre-paid users.

Although Whitmore’s remarks seem to be nothing but speculation, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard of such a rumor. in February, the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg reported that Apple was working on a smaller, cheaper iPhone that would work anywhere in the world. The new York Times contested that the phone would not be smaller, but would definitely be cheaper as a way to target the pre-paid market. of course, all these reports cited anonymous sources.

(READ: Whispers of a No-Contract, Carrier-Jumping iPhone)

I’m skeptical, if only because of little we’ve heard from the rumor mill on this front since February. Apple released an unlocked iPhone 4 for $650, but that’s mainly for world travelers who would otherwise spend lots of money on AT&T’s expensive overseas rates. if a cheap, contract-free iPhone was imminent, I’d expect to be hearing more rumors by now. The volume of iPhone 5 rumors, by comparison, is through the roof.

Whitmore is right on at least one thing: The pre-paid market is ripe for Apple’s picking. A contract-free iPhone seems inevitable, even if it doesn’t happen in September.

ipad 2 finally jailbroken by comex at jailbreakme.com

There was already a Redsnow jailbreak by the dev-team for most iOS devices, but no carrier unlock yet for the iPhone devices.   But the iPad 2 used a different platform, has been quite difficult to crack by developers. Now the chains are finally off, and the iPad 2 (along with its other iOS brethren) can be jailbroken via a simple browser-based utility.

Comex comes up with JailbreakMe 3.0 on a similar browser-based jailbreak that was released last year. All a user needs to do is to visit jailbreakme.com, click on the “Free” button, click “Install”, and the untethered jailbreak will start. not surprisingly, this method of installing the jailbreak is similar to downloading an app from the App Store to add some familiarity to the experience.

SUPPORTED DEVICES

According to the Dev-Team blog, the following devices are supported:

  • iPad1: 4.3 through 4.3.3
  • iPad2: 4.3.3
  • iPhone3GS: 4.3 through 4.3.3
  • iPhone4: 4.3 through 4.3.3
  • iPhone4-CDMA: 4.2.6 through 4.2.8
  • iPod touch 3g: 4.3, 4.3.2, 4.3.3
  • iPod touch 4g: 4.3 through 4.3.3

As is usually the case with jailbreaks, install at your own risk. also, take the Dev Team’s advice and install the PDF Patcher 2 utility from Cydia to avoid any malicious attacks from the PDF exploit that Apple left wide open.

Older firmwares are not supported for jailbreak, and there is still no carrier unlock for iphones or ipad 1 ipad 2 3g devices.

ERROR there was a problem downloading the jailbreak files. Invalid Checksum.

This is usually just server offline or overload, wait awhile and try again.

ERROR: there was a problem downloading the jailbreak files. HTTP response code 404

Your iOS device should be listed above, only iOS firmwares versions 4.3.3 supported for now. Solution is to either upgrade restore to version 4.3.3, or wait for Comex’s lower version jailbreaks to come out.

TESTED WORKING CYDIA APPS

Jailbreak users will have Cydia automatically installed and these Cydia apps are all fully compatible and working.

Office 365 apps for iPhone and Android not coming soon

Microsoft launched Office 365 to the world this week, but the company’s cloud product development is by no means complete.

Users can expect some functionality, including the ability to make phone calls from Lync Online to cell phones and landlines, to be added in the coming months. but for other tools, such as dedicated applications for the iPhone and Android, and a more complete browser-based experience for Office Web Apps, well, just keep waiting.

Network World discussed Microsoft’s cloud roadmap with Eron Kelly, who runs product management for Office 365, at Microsoft’s launch event Tuesday. while Microsoft says it will continually improve its new cloud service, the timeline for certain features remains hazy at best. Here’s a look at what Kelly had to say on a number of topics.

Office 365 encompasses many pieces of cloud-based software: Exchange, SharePoint, the Lync unified communications suite, and the Office Web Apps including Word, PowerPoint, Excel and OneNote.

But mobile access to Office is limited unless you’re the proud owner of a Windows Phone 7 device. Any smartphone, of course, can connect to email and calendars through Exchange ActiveSync and VPN software. but Microsoft only offers the full Office experience, including editing of Word, PowerPoint and Excel documents, to Windows Phone users.

There is a OneNote app available for the iPhone. but Microsoft hasn’t developed any other Office apps for the iPhone or Android devices. This relegates users of the most popular systems to their mobile browsers.

Testing Office Web Apps on an iPhone, I was able to open and edit a OneNote document in the OneNote app, but not in the iPhone browser. In Safari, I was able to view a Microsoft Word document, but not edit it. Editing requires downloading the document and opening it in an app. while Microsoft doesn’t supply any apps capable of editing Word documents on iPhones and Androids, third-party tools such as Quickoffice are able to do so, often for a fee.

Kelly says it was easier for Microsoft to build full Office functionality into Windows phones because the Office and mobile product teams can work closely together. He didn’t rule out bringing a Word, PowerPoint and Excel application to iPhones and Androids, but didn’t commit to doing so, either.

“We’ve done it with the OneNote on the iPhone,” Kelly says. “That indicates direction on the kinds of investments we’re working on moving forward.”

“The experience on the Office hub [in Windows Phone 7] is better, it’s cleaner,” Kelly notes. “Because there is a local app, you can download the document and edit it, manipulate it more.”

Even in a desktop browser on a Windows computer, Office Web Apps lacks auto-save functionality and the ability to have multiple users simultaneously edit Word and PowerPoint documents. Gartner analyst Matt Cain chalks this up to Microsoft intentionally limiting the capabilities of the browser versions of Office Web Apps to avoid cutting into revenue for Office software licenses.

Kelly says that’s not the case.

“It’s more just the evolution of where the products are,” he said. “If I were to look across the main applications of Office Web Apps, the most mature is Outlook. Outlook Web App has been around for a long time. It’s got a really broad set of features that really closely emulate what happens in the Outlook client and that’s because we’ve been working on it longer. if you look at Word, PowerPoint and Excel [in the browser] they’re just not as mature.”

There may never be full parity between Office Web Apps and the classic version of Office, however. “We don’t want to fully replicate the entire experience in the browser because… you can do a lot more when you have that local computing resource and client,” he says.

Lync Server, the packaged software that businesses can install within their own networks, is designed to be a full replacement for PBX phone systems. but Lync Online, one of the key components of Office 365, isn’t yet on the same level.

Lync Online today allows phone calls between two people using Lync clients, but not from a Lync client to a regular cell phone or landline phone number. Building services in a multi-tenant cloud environment is more complicated than developing software customers deploy themselves, Kelly says. There are also regulatory issues and partnerships with telecom companies that must be struck.

Full phone capabilities for Lync Online will “be very dependent on our telco partnerships,” and will progress faster in some regions than others, Kelly explains. That process will happen over the next 12 months, but Lync Online still won’t have full parity with Lync Server.

“It’ll be close but not complete,” Kelly says. “Lync Server still has a full PBX replacement set of features we won’t have yet in Lync Online. but we’ll continue to evolve and add those and close the gap.”

To be fair, Lync Online today provides instant messaging, video conferencing and other collaboration features. but Kelly says Lync in the cloud isn’t as sophisticated as Exchange in the cloud, which has been offered for several years.

“Exchange is the most mature, Lync is next,” Kelly says. “I’d say SharePoint is the least mature.”

While Office 365 does let customers access SharePoint servers hosted in Microsoft’s cloud data centers, the ability to customize SharePoint Online will be limited compared to SharePoint servers that customers manage themselves.

The Office 365 beta ended this week, with Microsoft moving beta customers to production code. while Kelly says tweaks were made to improve availability and the user interface, not all of the problems noticed by customers during the beta have been solved.

Some beta testers complained about trouble importing contacts into global address lists and requirements to use PowerShell scripting to complete tasks that should be simple.

“Some things we’re able to do in PowerShell; we’ll make improvements there,” Kelly said. “As we recognize there are certain tasks that are more common to less sophisticated users, we’ll add them to the UX. That’s the learning experience we’ll go through. we see the community as a great place to get that input.”

While beta customers are upgraded automatically, the process is a little more complicated for users who have in-house versions of Microsoft software or use the previous versions of Exchange and SharePoint Online, called the Business Productivity Online Suite (BPOS).

Microsoft has changed the terms of its Enterprise Agreement to give volume-licensing customers the right to shift some or all of their users to Office 365, Kelly said, with a one-year grace period in which users making the transition may access both the on-premises and cloud software. even after the one year is up, customers can use a hybrid environment, with some users on Office 365 and others using packaged software.

The transition will require moving email accounts, SharePoint data and other stuff from the customer’s data center to the cloud.

There are also tools to help BPOS users shift to Office 365, but Microsoft is not allowing all BPOS customers to upgrade immediately. Instead, the transition will happen in phases. On-premises BlackBerry servers also won’t be able to connect to Office 365 at launch.

“Transition to Office 365 will be available to existing BPOS customers soon after availability of Office 365,” Microsoft says in an FAQ. “Microsoft will work with all existing BPOS customers to determine the best time for the customer’s business to make the transition.”

Hands-on with Sprint HTC EVO 3D; a fun and rock solid Android smartphone

I awarded the HTC EVO 4G my top pick a couple of times last year and think it is still one of the best devices on Sprint. we now have the HTC EVO 3D that takes much of what was good about the EVO 4G and improves it in many areas, including the display, faster processor, more solid feel, and latest version of the Android operating system.

The Sprint HTC EVO 3D is similar to the HTC Sensation on T-Mobile in many ways, but has the unique glasses-free 3D display and cameras. 3D is a common buzzword today and is a bit gimmicky, however I did find it fun to use on the EVO 3D and as long as it isn’t really taking away from anything why can it hurt to have a fun feature? You can check out a few photos of the HTC EVO 3D in my image gallery along with a video walk through and more initial thoughts on the device below. I also included a 3D YouTube video with three clips I took while playing with the device.

Image Gallery: Check out a few photos of the HTC Sensation 4G on T-Mobile.

The HTC EVO 3D comes in one of those excellent durable and compact packages that includes the EVO 3D, battery, A/C adapter, USB cable, wired stereo headset, and some pamphlets. The box is pretty plain with a white outside and colorful interior box.

Specifications for the HTC EVO 3D include the following:

These are some of the best specifications currently available for Android devices and it is very nice to see the latest version of Sense 3.0 and Android on the device right out of the box.

The front of the HTC EVO 3D is dominated by the beautiful 4.3 inch qHD (540×960 pixels) display. this is the same as the HTC Sensation 4G and after playing with these two devices I am starting to feel the traditional 480×800 is getting boring. There are four touchscreen hardware buttons below the display and a large headset speaker opening with indicator lights with a front facing camera above the display.

There is a microUSB port on the left side that I understand can be used with a special dongle for HDMI out. The EVO 3D has integrated DLNA support so that is the easier option for outputting video to a larger display.

The 3.5 mm headset jack and power button are found on the top while there is a mic opening on the bottom.

All the interesting pieces are on the right side with the volume button up top and a 2D/3D switch and large physical camera shutter button down on the lower part of the side. The 2D/3D switch is the toggle for still and video capture capability and does not toggle the display performance on and off of 3D viewing. The stainless steel capture button is one of the largest I have seen on a phone and should help you capture images and video.

The back has a great feel to it with a textured cover that really gives the EVO 3D a solid feel of quality. You will find dual 5 megapixel cameras mounted in a small protrusion surrounded by red colored metal and having dual LED flash lights in the middle. being that this is a Sprint phone and not a Verizon phone I expected to see this border in yellow. The camera lenses are protected by a piece of glass and I hope this does not get scratched over time so that clear pictures can be captured.

3D video sample: Visit this link to see the 3D video sample.

The HTC EVO 3D is not a light device, but feels awesome in your hand with a density the gives me a sense of high quality. I would love to have seen another kickstand implementation on the device since I do find this useful.

Like the HTC Sensation 4G, the HTC EVO 3D runs Gingerbread (Android 2.3.3) and HTC Sense 3.0 so I won’t go into all of those details and will just direct you to my HTC Sensation 4G article. this new version of Sense provides you with an active lock screen similar to what we see on the HTC Flyer Android tablet. I am a big fan of Sense 3.0 and it performs well on the EVO 3D.

The EVO 3D comes with HTC Watch and is preloaded with the Green Hornet in 3D. honestly, the movie looks great in 3D and I personally never had any issues with the 3D viewing experience. my wife’s aunt said it bothered her eyes and it may for some.

My family enjoyed capturing and viewing movies shot in 3D, but the best experience for viewing is still directly on the phone so there are limits to how useful it is. Then again, sometimes it is fun to just have a pleasurable experience that isn’t related to working on your phone and there is no harm in having the 3D experience on the device.

The EVO 3D also comes with the Spiderman 3D game and it too was fun to play as a rather simple fighting game with cool 3D effects. There is a link to 3D games from Gameloft for you to purchase for $4.99 each and these include Asphalt 6, GT Racing, Assassin’s Creed, Let’s Golf 2, and NOVA so there are some 3D games you can purchase and enjoy on the device. I would love to see the NASCAR app in 3D.

The HTC EVO 3D is available now for $199.99 with a minimum voice and data plan with 2-year contract after a $100 instant savings offer. Full no-contract price is $549.99. The least expensive monthly plan is $79.99 with 450 minutes and unlimited data.

Unlike back when the HTC EVO 4G was released and I seriously thought it was enough of a carrier changer for me to pick up my own I do not think the EVO 3D is a carrier changer. that said, if you are on Sprint, I think it is clearly one of the best Android options available and if I was on Sprint I would likely pick one up. Battery life seems to be decent and a LOT better than the EVO 4G while performance has been great. 3D is fun and your family may enjoy it like mine did.

Geek-chic accessories

L G has positioned itself at the head of the pack with its new G2x Android smart phone. With a powerful Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core, 1 GHz processor, the G2x is speedy and efficient and can switch between different menus chock full of pre-loaded apps and icons. With a touchscreen that displays even the most psychedelic colors on the spectrum as well as an eight-megapixel camera, this smart phone is the perfect summer accessory. the only major drawback is the design: Its weird backbone rests on your index finger while in use, which takes away from the sleek look of this soon-to-be-hit phone. As of press time, the G2x was still not available in Egypt, but can be purchased online.

Fishing frenzy

R ound up your friends or family and plan a relaxing weekend fishing trip. in the North Coast, you won’t need much equipment as you can catch small- to medium-sized fish by the shore. all you need is a fishing rod and a small hook. if you’re fishing by the rocks, you could also whip out a net to snag a crab or two. you probably won’t catch any large critters, but any crabs you do catch will be a delicious meal. if you’re planning a fishing trip to Hurghada or somewhere else in the Red Sea, you’ll need to upgrade your arsenal. First, prepare a fishing kit that includes rods and reels as well as a box of medium to large hooks and sinkers. next, use shrimp and squid as bait, which you can find easily at stores. if you want to bring out the fisherman (or woman) in you, try using lures to take home an even bigger prize. One might even catch some tuna or Khermana fish with the help of trolling rods found on many of the vessels that sail the Red Sea. Boats and yachts are available for rent at almost any harbor. For a variety of fishing equipment, head to Alam El-Behar (Sea World) in Downtown Cairo. Alam El-Behar 1 Sherif St. • Downtown • Cairo

Shade pride

T hey’re not new, and probably won’t set you apart from the pack, but they’re still a staple of any summer wardrobe. yes, we’re talking about the classic American shades from Ray-Ban. Inspired by aviator sunglasses from WWII, the plethora of unisex variations of this classic remain the epitome of style and protect your eyes with 100% polarized and glare-resistant lenses. With new Wayfarer, square, round, colored and classic designs, you’re sure to find a frame that perfectly suits your face, and if cared for, a pair of Ray-Bans will ensure you look stylish for years to come.

Keeping cool

N o one likes to carry a cooler full of drinks and snacks across the beach looking for the right shady spot to settle for the rest of the day. to save yourself the hassle, buy the latest Coleman ice chest, a definite beach-worthy essential. Its wheels allow for easier transport and minimize the weight you have to pull. Its wheels are designed for durability on sandy surfaces, and its extra capacity makes it a real find for those who spend most of their summer by the beach.

   Feel the beat

M usic goes hand-in-hand with summer. you could be at home, working late or hosting a large party and it will be the music that makes the evening memorable. But ensuring you can enjoy music to the fullest means getting the right set of speakers. That’s where the new Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin Air steps in. No fanfare necessary — these are the speakers you’ve been waiting for. not only do they offer great sound quality, they also charge your iPhone. the Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin Air is arguably the best set of multimedia speakers of its kind on the market and are reasonably priced for such high-quality technology. (Bowers & Wilkins is praised as a demigod by audio freaks everywhere.) the fact that the Apple AirPlay feature guarantees perfect streaming over Wi-Fi doesn’t hurt. Featuring an iPod or iPhone dock and a minimalistic look, the Zeppelin Air also lets you stream from any Apple device. the only downside is setting up the AirPlay technology — it’s relatively new so it requires someone who is tech-savvy to figure it out. if you’re not an Apple lover, you’ll also need a USB to connect. the Zeppelin Air will be available in Archimedia stores in June.

Slip-on comfort

G et yourself a pair of Vans slip-on shoes that will outlast all your summer adventures, even if you wear them every day. the canvas shoes are both stylish and functional; they come in several colors and original motif designs for men and women. they also have padded collars and insoles to provide ultimate comfort and foot protection. so instead of buying yet another pair of Lacostes, give Vans a chance and for half the price. you won’t be disappointed.

iPhone navigation packages, in S-M-L editions

Thinking about getting Dad some directional guidance for Father’s Day? our package selections cover small, medium and large budgets to get where you’re going.

of all the industries disrupted by the emergence of these odd touchscreen computers disguised as mobile phones, the standalone GPS market may be the most topsy-turvy.

among Chris’ 33 things he doesn’t need any more now that he has an iPhone, a separate $100+ unitasker GPS unit is probably the biggest target; the same goes double for Android phone owners, who get a capable and free turn-by-turn navigation tool as part of the Google Maps application.

Just having the phone isn’t quite enough, though, if you want to help those notorious no-asking-for-directions family members (that’d be Dad) self-guide with the iPhone 4. Combining the right app with the right car bracket can turn a simple purchase into a genuine Father’s Day gift — so here are our package recommendations in small, medium and large price ranges. all apps are available on the App Store, and most of the hardware can be found at best buy, Radio Shack or Staples.

Small

Everyone likes free, and that’s what our first app choice brings to the table. MapQuest 4 Mobile (developed by AOL, our corporate parent) provides capable turn-by-turn navigation with voice synthesis, powered by the same map data as the mapquest.com site. the app includes live traffic data, point of interest search and more — and did I mention the free part? Drawbacks include a quieter voice than some of the other offerings; you also have to manually choose between power-saving mode (where the app will allow the phone to sleep) and high-performance mode. still, if you’re looking for voice directions on a budget, it’s a great place to start. (Note that both MapQuest Mobile and our #2 pick require data connectivity to download maps on the go.)

for a budget vehicle mount, Arkon delivers no-frills units in windshield or lighter-socket ($20) and beanbag friction mounts ($30). Personally I don’t care for lighter socket mounts, as they make it much more difficult to glance at the map while driving when the phone is mounted so far out of the driver’s heads-up sightlines. I’ve been using the IPM512 friction mount for a while, and it works; the phone holder swivels to work either in portrait or landscape, and it includes adjustable ‘feet’ to slide out of the way of the dock port and the headphone jack. it does sometimes tend to accidentally press the phone’s sleep switch, but for the most part it works well.

to power the low-cost setup, any USB adapter will do; best to combine it with an iPhone sync cable plus a USB A-A extender to give you the slack you’ll need. the Bracketron dual adapter ($25) is available at most Staples stores and will happily charge both the iPhone and a second device.

Medium

the next navigation app up the ladder doesn’t cost much, but it’s garnered some high-powered fans. MotionX-GPS Drive ($0.99, also available for iPad at $2.99) may not have impressed Mel for last year’s gift guide, but others swear by it. the advantage here is that you can get the app at the low price, then if you like it re-up for 30 days ($2.99) or a year ($19.99) of live voice navigation as you like — visual/map navigation is free of charge after the initial purchase.

Like MapQuest, MotionX-GPS requires data service to download maps, but you have the option of caching your route to avoid any hiccups or data issues on the way. the current version includes links to Facebook’s check-in feature, full business/POI search and contacts integration. MotionX now even integrates with newer Pioneer in-dash hardware, as reported earlier this month.

the middle-range mounting solution is Griffin’s WindowSeat mobile hands-free kit, which combines both power and a mount with a microphone-equipped aux 1/8″ cable for audio and speakerphone use. the PowerJolt universal adapter included in the package provides 1 amp charging, and the simple bracket/suction cup holder keeps the phone tucked into position. the package retails for $49.99.

If you dislike the bracket shuffle, consider Clingo. this new mounting tech from Allsop uses a super-sticky pad (which apparently leaves no residue behind) to hold your devices neatly in place. the window-mount unit retails for $29.99.

Large

the next tier of navigation apps are all dramatically more expensive, which can cause a bit of app sticker shock. they do bring along a key advantage, though — maps are included in the app itself, rather than downloaded on demand. this means that app downloads and updates in iTunes can take quite a while, but it also means you’ll never be stranded without data service while navigating (and if you’re traveling overseas/in a roaming area, the data costs would be pretty expensive).

the ‘big three’ in full-featured, maps-included navigation are Magellan (just updated with a new look and features), TomTom and Navigon; all the apps have their adherents, but for my money Navigon MobileNavigator is the best of the bunch. I’ve used the USA East Region version (on sale for $24.99; full USA map version is $34.99 on sale) for frequent drives in and around New York City, and it’s been very consistent and reliable. Navigon offers versions for most countries and regions, so if you’re headed out of town it’s worth a look.

One of my favorite features in the Navigon app is the three-routes option at the start of navigation; the app shows you the route it thinks is best, but also two alternatives that may be better under specific circumstances. you can choose which way you want to go, rather than heading off in what the app thinks is the wrong direction and having to wait for it to clue in.

a premium app deserves a premium phone cradle; there are good options in the $100 Griffin RoadTrip HandsFree or the $70 Belkin TuneBase Direct, but as mentioned I’m not big on the power socket mounting approach. Instead, I’d suggest taking a look at the Dension Car Dock for iPhone — an integrated unit that includes both aux and FM outputs, power, and a custom app for device control and navigation links. In-app purchase adds ‘Car Finder’ mode, which saves the exact GPS spot where you parked to help you find your way back. the Dension unit lists at 80 euros, but hopefully will be coming to US distribution soon; I’d expect it to hit at about $100 when it gets here. and is available in the US now.

of course, if you choose the TomTom app you should also get the custom-fit TomTom car kit, and for $100 it’s got to offer something more: enhanced GPS performance, a built-in powered speaker and better hands-free calling. it uses the same easy-mount back found on TomTom’s dedicated units. TomTom’s case also works fine with the other GPS apps; commenter Paul notes that there is a free TomTom Car Kit app to disable warning messages, read GPS status and more.

If you already have a mounting solution but need a sleek, cable-minimizing power and audio solution, check out XtremeMac’s InCharge Auto Aux for $50. Using the dock/charge connector for audio, it includes an aux-out jack in the charger housing, keeping the cable clutter at bay.

whichever size fits your needs — small, medium, or large — enjoy your summer drives!
