Free preview of new Times iPhone app offered – iPod/iPhone – Macworld UK

The Times is offering its updated iPhone app as a free preview for a limited time.

The updated app offers a much more interactive experience than its predecessors, allowing you to customise the order in which stories are presented and save articles for viewing offline.

“The app brings the Times and the Sunday Times to the iPhone for the first time, showcasing the depth of Times journalism, with the latest stories on your screen almost as fast as they are written and a design that allows you to navigate easily between stories; customise your app to find your favourite sections first; save articles to read later or when you are offline and send feedback directly to our team – 7 days a week, anytime and anywhere you want,” the app’s iTunes description reads.

It’ll be free for an unspecified time, after which it will be exclusive to subscribers of thetimes.co.uk, which costs £2 per week.

Times Newspapers Limited also said that “The app will also be available directly for purchase through the App Store,” but didn’t specify whether the cost implied in the statement would be an up-front charge or a subscription fee.

Users of the app largely seem to be happy with the update. “Well done Times, eventually! This is so much better than the previous clunky iPhone app, shame it wasn’t around on Day 1,” one reviewer wrote on iTunes.

Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, the Times app requires iOS 3.1 or later. There is a version of the app specifically for the iPad, which offers a free 30-day preview, then costs £9.99 per month, or is free to subscribers to thetimes.co.uk.

Sony NSX-46GT1 Google TV Review

From the moment we first set our eyes on Sony’s Internet TVs powered by Google TV, we were impressed. Google TV basically brings the best entertainment on the internet to your TV. for the past few weeks we have had the opportunity to live with Google TV, and it turns out that living with it as our primary TV isn’t all that we expected it to be.We reviewed Sony’s NSX-46GT1 which is still amongst the first TVs to come with Google TV built-into it. The TV itself is quite the looker with a glossy white curved back finish and an iPad’esque frame on the front – its design is indeed very Mac’esque. As a stand alone TV, the NSX-46GT1 is quite impressive. besides for its spiffy design, it’s also features an LED backlit display with a 1080p resolution. it also packs in four HDMI connections, component/composite connections for older devices, four USB ports, 24p true Cinema support, Light Sensor technology, and built-in 1080p up-scaling.

Getting up and running with Google TV is easy. The system has both an ethernet port and built-in Wi-Fi (a/b/g/n), so connecting it to the internet is as easy as connecting it to your local network. The system comes with a “Keypad”. The keypad is used as the system’s remote control and it sports a full QWERTY keyboard along with an optical finger sensor for controlling the mouse pointer, as well as scrolling, and  zooming in on photos. The optical finger sensor takes a bit of getting used to, but overall, the keypad is just the right size and offers a solid form-factor for operating a smart TV. Alternatively, you can use your Android phone or iPhone as a remote control by downloading the Google TV Remote.

Google TV is running Android and is powered by an Intel Atom processor. The system is responsive and the Atom processor manages to provide the the system with plenty of power for all of its multimedia tasks. Speaking of multimedia tasks, there is almost nothing this TV cant do. for starters, the system comes with the Google Chrome browser with support for Adobe Flash 10.1 for surfing the web. We found the experience of surfing the web on the TV to be pleasant enough, although we’re really not sure how often we would use it – it is a nice feature to have. Google TV also offers other apps like Twitter, Napster, Pandora, Netflix, Vimeo, YouTube, Amazon Instant Video, CNBC Real-Time, Sony’s own Qriocity movie service, NBA Game Time, Crackle, HBO Go, Blip.tv, C-SPAN Video Library, Dailymotion,  EpixHD, Vevo, and more. The system also has a Gallery app which lets you stream photos from Picasa, Flickr, etc, essentially transforming your TV into a giant picture frame.

When it comes to apps like YouTube, you can stream both standard def and high def videos (when available) to your TV. Generally, HD streaming quality is top notch, although we didn’t experience the occasional stutter which was probably do to our own network issues. The user interface also features a neat picture -in-picture mode so that you can navigate the Google TV interface while simultaneously watching TV in a smaller window.

Google TV is able to work hand in hand with your live TV channels. one of its neatest features is its ability to search your TV. Input a search term and Google TV will search live TV, your apps, and the web for you. then you can access what you’re looking for instantly.  You can also use Google TV as a sort of DVR by creating TV playlists which are added to your Google Queue. Items on the playlists can include YouTube videos, and video podcasts.  furthermore if you’re a Dish network subscriber, you can use Google TV  as a serious DVR system so that you can record TV programs and search your TV recordings. It’s just a shame though that these enhanced TV functions are limited to DISH network subscribers.

Unfortunately, our biggest issues with Google TV lies with its user interface. while the system is powerful, its user interface feels unintuitive and uninspiring, and even somewhat disorganized. We often found ourselves squinting to read the text used in the menus, even on a 46″ display. We also often found ourselves scratching our heads about how to navigate around the system. The reality is, that when you compare Google TV’s U.I. design to that of Boxee, or Apple TV, it comes up short. At the end of the day, we really feel like the U.I. needs to be revamped. Fortunately, we have heard from a few semi-reliable sources, that a major Google TV refresh is on its way soon. Whether that refresh comes in the form of new hardware products, or just software, Sony’s series of Google TVs should support any software updates via over the air updates.

Overall, we would best describe the Google TV experience in its current form as powerful and robust, but not intuitive. that said Sony’s NSX-46GT1 Internet TV is a quality TV with a beautiful design and great HD performance that produces solid colors and blacks. when it comes to those don’t have cable, we could really see why Google TV could be especially appealing for them because it offers TV viewers lots of content options without being tied to a cable connection. But how many people actually need to Tweet directly form their TV, we’re not sure, but it is a nice feature to have regardless.  Fortunately, Sony’s Google TVs are pretty reasonably priced. The 46″ Sony NSX-46GT1 TV can be purchased online for under a $1000. The 32″ model is also going for around $599, and the 40″ for around $700.

The good: Stylish and Unique Design, Solid visuals, excellent keypad / remote control, Google TV is a powerful platform, Built-in Wi-fi, TV is Energy efficient

The Bad: Some popular services like Hulu are missing, thin metal stand is a bit chintzy, Google TV user interface is unintuitive

Newswatch Magazine – How Phones Changed Lifestyles

Life is no more what it used to be with the arrival of mobile telecommunications in Nigeria

Since the Global System for Mobile Communication, GSM, revolution in Nigeria in 2001, the Nigerian mobile phone market has been of great attraction for phone manufacturers and vendors. this can be attributed to the high number of phone users in the country. from just 100,000 in the first year of GSM in Nigeria, the subscription has grown to more than 81 million as at August 2010. Phones have now altered the way Nigerians think and live their lives.

With a GSM phone, for instance, the user can make calls, chat or send short message service, SMS, to friends, relations or business partners. With a phone, a user can scroll to the calculator and work out some complex calculations or check the calendar to make sure that his appointment is properly booked.

There are more sophisticated phones which a user can use to check emails, facebook or tweeter. Some phones can be used to carry out banking transactions, video events and many other things.  Today, a moderately sophisticated handset has a television, radio, computer and still camera.  Emmanuel Amos, a computer programmer and an IT consultant, explained what his phone can do for him. “as a computer programmer and an IT consultant, there are so many things I use my Blackberry for.  I did not buy it for the fun of it but for its contributions to ease my job.” as my job entails, I install a package known as INTEGRA 2000+, an accounting and stock broking software, so with my BB, I receive requests from clients who may want this software in their computers. And since I am always on the field, I cannot be carrying my laptop about, so wherever I am and I receive a request, I go there immediately to install,” Amos said.

There is no doubt that businesses have now improved with the emergence of smarter phones. even the running costs of such businesses have dropped dramatically because the transportation and long distance constraints which used to constitute present problems, are no longer there. for instance, Andrew Ochu, a market researcher, said he uses his BB not only to surf the internet for leisure but also to get market information on the trend in the market and also to keep contact with clients on products that may be in demand. he, therefore, does not need to leave his house or office to transact business with his clients.

But some others use big phones just to keep up with the Joneses. Gbenga Fabusuyi, an estate agent, confessed that he initially bought his smart phone simply because it was the vogue then. “I am saying this because I do not really earn much so I am not supposed to be using such an expensive phone,” he said.

Edward Sylvestre, a technician, is another phone freak who uses four phones. he said phones have become part of his life and he cannot live without them.  he said he uses his Nokia 5330 DSTV mobile to watch news and other television programmes of his interest while his other phones like Nokia 1208, Tecno SD51, and ZTE etisalat dual sim, keep him connected to all the networks available on the GSM.

For Moses Amos, a secondary school student, listening to music is what gives him real value for his BB bold 2. “I listen to music with it because with the BB, there is a cool melody that comes with music. It does not scream or bang like other phones. Music is cool on BB. Also, I chat and send mails to friends. I also use facebook and tweeter,” Amos said.

but Chimdalu Onyemelukwe, a lawyer and member of National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, said her N75, 000 worth BB gives her a run for her money. according to her, it is easy to get quick access to her mail box and do research work. “for example, recently I was working on a research and I needed a section of the 1999 constitution which I was able to get easily with my BB. I also use it for confirmation of either a speech or a document. In the area of connectivity, my BB enables me to find my old friends via facebook and twitter.  I also use it for offloading of pictures, for example, there was a time I was searching for jobs on a website and my passport was required. I just went to offload it from my picture gallery and pasted it on the site. I also check currency value of countries in the world with my BB,” she said.

Cell phones have sufficiently altered the lifestyles of Nigerias who can no longer do without them owing to their enormous features and huge variety of accessories. PC World, an IT consulting firm, recently listed 10 of the most admired phones that have altered the lifestyle of Nigerians.  they are: Apple iPhone 4 32GB, HTC EVO 4G, Motorolla Droid X, HTC Droid incredible, Google Nexus one, Samsung Captivate,  Motorola Droid, Apple iPhone 3GS, Blackberry Bold 9700 and Palm Pre plus.

Like most technologies, GSM phones have also gone through several stages of development. There were some technological developments on cellular phones that ushered in automated cellular network, otherwise known as first Generation phones.  what distinguished the first Generation of mobile phones from the previous generation was the use of multiple cell sites, and the ability to transfer calls from one site to the next as the user travelled between cells during a conversation. the first generation system was first launched in Japan by NTT in 1979. the initial launch network covered the full metropolitan area of Tokyo’s over 20 million inhabitants with a cellular network of 23 base stations. within five years, the NTT network had been expanded to cover the whole population of Japan and became the first nationwide 1G network.

In the 1990s, the ‘second generation’ (2G) mobile phone systems emerged, primarily using the GSM standard. these differed from the previous generation by using digital instead of analog transmission. the rise in mobile phone usage as a result of 2G was explosive and this era also saw the advent of prepaid mobile phones. Coinciding with the introduction of 2G systems was a trend away from the larger “brick” phones toward tiny 100–200g hand-held devices.

This change was possible not only through technological improvements such as more advanced batteries and more energy-efficient electronics, but also because of the higher density of cell sites to accommodate increasing usage. the latter meant that the average distance transmission from phone to the base station shortened, leading to increased battery life whilst on the move.

the second generation also introduced a new variant of communication called SMS or text messaging. the first machine-generated SMS message was sent in the UK on December 3, 1992, followed in 1993 by the first person-to-person SMS sent in Finland. the advent of prepaid services in the late 1990s soon made SMS the communication method of choice amongst the young, a trend which spread across all ages. the 2G also introduced the ability to access media content on mobile phones. In 1998, the first downloadable content sold to mobile phones was the ring tone, launched by Finland’s Radiolinja (now Elisa).

As the use of 2G phones became more widespread and people began to utilise mobile phones in their daily lives, it became clear that demand for data services (such as access to the internet) was growing. furthermore, experience from fixed broadband services showed there would also be an ever increasing demand for greater data speeds. the 2G technology was nowhere near up to the job, so the industry began to work on the next generation of technology known as 3G. the main technological difference that distinguishes 3G technology from 2G technology is the use of packet switching rather than circuit switching for data transmission.

Bria extends VoIP phone client to iPad

if you’ve been looking around for a solid VoIP/SIP client for the iPad or iPhone, consider CounterPath’s Bria.

For all the excitement around VoIP on the iPhone and iPod touch (including high profile apps like Skype, Vonage TalkFree for Facebook and Line2), relatively few developers have gone after the corporate side of the voice mix. With so many large enterprises using Asterisk-based PBX replacements for VoIP telephony, a solid SIP client for iPhone and iPad seems like a natural winner.

Bringing the advantage of its long pedigree in desktop VoIP clients, CounterPath now delivers some of that savvy to iOS with Bria. on the Mac, Bria is the successor to the capable EyeBeam and free X-lite softphones; now shipping on both the iPhone (US$7.99) and launched this week for the iPad ($14.99), it provides some of the key features needed in a mobile voice solution. Bria works out of the box with major IP-telephony service providers (ITSPs), but keep in mind it does not include service with the app; you need to be using a hosted service or your company’s IP telephony infrastructure for Bria to work.

the three most important considerations for any softphone app are call quality; call quality; and, of course, call quality. I was able to make and receive calls on several WiFi networks using Bria and a Fonality PBXtra server (built off the Trixbox Asterisk platform). while I heard a bit of near-side echo and low-bandwidth choppiness during some calls, most of the time the audio was as good or better than it would be on a conventional iPhone call, and less likely to drop. the people I called reported my voice quality as ‘awesome’ and ‘really spectacular,’ so it seems the artifacts I heard from time to time were on my side only.

It’s easy to set up Bria; the app takes the same credentials and server info you use for your desktop VoIP/SIP softphone. once you enter your server name and authorization, you can begin making and receiving calls. Bria is optimized for WiFi use, but it will work over 3G if you enable that option in preferences; however, you’re at risk of chewing up your wireless data allocation if you make a lot of calls that way, and quality will suffer a bit. on the flip side, you are not using any voice minutes, and for calls to colleagues on your internal phone system you will appear to be calling from your office extension — a great trick when you’re actually enjoying a piña colada by the pool.

the iPad edition of Bria works perfectly with multitasking, allowing you to switch apps and continue a call in the background. both standard wired headphone/mic combos and Bluetooth headsets work great, but what’s really surprising is that the iPad works quite well as a speakerphone — plop it onto your conference table and away you go.

you can optimize your voice quality by selecting a preferred codec in the advanced app preferences; this is also where you turn on 3G calling, set backgrounding options, and adjust other items. For the best quality on 3G calls, Counterpath offers the G.729 premium codec as an in-app purchase — unfortunately, it’s $8.99, so it’s unlikely to appeal to most users unless you really need the improved low-bandwidth mojo.

Backgrounding may affect your battery life, since most SIP servers will require a UDP connection that isn’t directly supported by Apple’s notification scheme; some newer servers may work with TCP, which does save power and improve background rings. you can also set incoming calls to forward to your cell number for when Bria’s not running.

CounterPath’s market position provides a good perspective on the impact of iOS and the Mac in the enterprise market, since its products address business needs almost exclusively. When I spoke to senior VP of marketing and products Todd Carothers earlier this week, he acknowledged the accelerating interest from businesses big and small in Apple platforms: “We have seen a significant enough growth in Mac Bria sales since the launch of 3.0 to SME/Enterprise customers. What’s happening is Enterprises want multiple OS support with common UI elements.” Being able to offer a consistent user experience across PC and mobile platforms would seem to be particularly important for telephony applications, since business users are going to spend a lot of time making and taking calls.

Bria is definitely a business product at a business price, and it’s a bit frustrating that CounterPath didn’t choose to deliver it as a universal app instead of the split-SKU arrangement in place now. nevertheless, if your company is rocking an IP PBX and you want a premium VoIP experience, there’s no better choice right now.

Flemington photographer’s camera work helps launch new iPhone app of NYC sites

FLEMINGTON — the camera work of Flemington photographer Audrey Kerchner has helped launch one of the newest iPhone apps to hit the mobile computing industry.

“JustYourTrip New York” features Kerchner’s work over a five-day, dawn-till-dusk excursion in which she shot more than 200 locations throughout the Big Apple.

“I was in the city before dawn every day because I wanted to start shooting as soon as the sun came up so I could get the most out of my day,” said Kerchner. “I spent time in the fashion district and saw it from two divergent perspectives. I was shooting the high-end fashion shoppers in bustling stores on 14th street one day, then the next morning I was on the same street at dawn before any of the stores were open and it was transformed. the street was still alive with activity, but with meat packers and delivery trucks … the transformation between the two worlds was amazing.”

“JustYourTrip New York” is an offline travel guide that offers over 225 audio walking tours of sites such as the house where “the Cosby Show” was filmed, Carrie Bradshaw’s favorite bakery from “Sex and the City,” a ghost tour, and the traditional restaurant and museum insights. the app is available online for $5.99.
