First Impressions

When we received the TypeTop Swivel Mini Bluetooth iPhone 4 Keyboard and case we thought it looked ok but a little on the bulky side, it looks good enough and can see some practicality in using it. however, is it a product that you would keep an iPhone 4 fitted at all times whilst carrying around on a daily basis?

The Design

The design is very nice and has a top quality feel, it is not horrible to touch where you get that tacky plastic far from it. It has a nice feel, solid and sturdy whilst holding in your hands. the swivel hinge works very well indeed giving you a 360 degree turn, which is beneficial for holding and supporting any angle you please.

The Key Features

The swivel design allows many angels so that the iPhone 4 keyboard and the smartphone and can be used to satisfy your needs, if you feel like chatting on FaceTime you can swivel the iPhone 4 round so that the iPhone 4 is facing you whilst in stand-up mode, full QWERTY keyboard is brilliant to type on, the keyboard has a built-in battery and that means the iPhone 4 battery is not under any loss and the case has all the cut-outs for all ports, buttons and cameras.

Bluetooth and Pairing

Pairing the iPhone 4 with the keyboard is very simple indeed, take the keyboard out of the case and on the back of the side you will see a mini USB port and a switch, just turn that switch on. Turn on the Bluetooth on your iPhone 4 by going into settings then General and then turn Bluetooth on, once you have done this go back to the keyboard and on the top you will see a light and to the right of that you will see a little press button (Press it), the iPhone will then prompt you with a pairing code, use the keyboard numbers to punch in the code and hey presto you are up and running.

Battery Life

The Bluetooth keyboard that we received via mobilefun.co.uk has its own battery and that means it will not use the iPhone 4 battery at all, the battery in the keyboard is rechargeable via the mini USB cable provided in the box.

We Used, We Liked

We put the TypeTop Swivel Mini Bluetooth Keyboard & Case through its paces and have to say was very impressed indeed, once the iPhone 4 was in the case and the keyboard was paired we held it in our hands and sent text messages, played with the volume, typed words out in safari, sent a few emails, played with the iPod like volume controls and play / pause etc. All of the above went smoothly and without any problems at all and will continue to use it, whilst on the move we used the case but when we was listening to music in our Bose docking system we docked the iPhone and took the keyboard out of the swivel case and used the keyboard on its own whilst walking around the house. Good signal at a distance of about 20 feet (Our office is not that massive, lol).

The Positive

There sometimes lurks behind dark corners positives and negatives, we will get to the negatives in a moment. on the positive side of things we really love the TypeTop Swivel Mini Bluetooth Keyboard and case because it makes texting, emailing, playing with the iPod a breeze and once used to typing on the Bluetooth keyboard it was easier than the iPhone QWERTY touchscreen, the case and keyboard feels great and very sturdy indeed and for the price it is a bargain.

The Negative

Sorry for the downside of things but sometimes you cannot have everything, the only downside is that if you hold the keyboard and case in your hands with the iPhone 4 facing you it is very nice to hold, but we tried laying it on a desk in this position to use it like a laptop so to speak and this did not work at all. the iPhone 4 is heavier than the case and keyboard together and sitting it on a desk in a laptop set-up it just fell over, you can rotate it the other way so the keyboard is at the back so you can have the iPhone 4 standing for watching videos or FaceTime.

Guess so, as the 8.9″ Linkbook netbook that you see here is powered by the Freescale PowerPC processor – the same chip used in Mac computers for a fair number of years until just a few years back. The Linkbook is able to hook up to the Internet as long as there is a decent signal thanks to a 3G modem alongside a SIM card slot, 16GB of internal flash memory and 256MB RAM. Its 8.9″ display won’t be able to handle HD video though at just 1024 x 600 resolution, but at least you do get the basic two USB 2.0 ports, microphone and headphone jaacks as well as a webcam. No Windows on this as it will run on Link OS, a custom operating system wihch is based on Ubuntu. Vodafone of South Africa will offer this for a mere $25 when you sign up for a 2-year service contract, now how about that!

The 3G Clone looks more like the iPhone 3G (With the Rounded Back) And Tons Of Icons: This phone has the upgraded firmware of the i68+ and the i9 (so there’s not a lot new there), but it looks more like the third generation version of the iPhone with a more rounded back.

It also has many more customizable icons available. to be exact, there are about ten pages of possible icon applications. there are now options for maps, stocks, you tube, weather, movies, songs, or any other application that you could use on the phone.

It Doesn’t Run On 3G Networks: The biggest misconception about this phone is that it now runs on 3G networks. But, like all of the other clones, it runs on GSM sim cards like AT&T, T Mobile, Fido and Rogers, among others. People have told me that the phone does work with the 3G Cingular and AT&T cards, but you don’t get the speed. this phone also works with pre paid sims from AT&T, T Mobile, and others.

The Quality Is Similar to that Of the i68 And i9: If you’re familiar with the recent brisk selling quad band clones with Java (the i68 and i9) you’ll probably find that the G model is quite similar to these, with the exception of the icons and updated appearance. these phones are very popular and are well received. I find the quality to be quite good. the phone is solid and the picture, screen, reception and sound quality are all nice. the pictures are pretty good especially in bright light.

This phone is similar to the other clones in that you can do most everything with it on the cheap. you can browse the web via WAP, opera mini, or other browsers that you can download. It has MMS and SMS, as well as email. there is Bluetooth, MP3 / MP4 and digital camera / web cam. You’ll also find an e book reader and FM radio.

In short, this is a nice phone that is pretty similar to the i68 and i9. But folks seem to like it because of it’s updated appearance with rounded back and the new ability to customize the icons.

The Intel Z68 chipset really brings Sandy Bridge processors into their full-featured birthright. The intial Cougar Point chipsets all hobbled the new CPUs in one way or the other: you couldn’t use the integrated GPU, or you couldn’t overclock. The Z68 removes these arbitrary restrictions, and along with Lucid’s Virtu, enables new options in system configuration.

Lucid (formerly LucidLogix) originally came onto the enthusiast scene with their "Hydra" chip that promised vendor-independent multi-GPU scaling, i.e. the ability to use multiple ATI and NVIDIA cards in the same system, combining their performance. Hydra never worked as well as Lucid had hoped, although in some situations the performance gains could be significant. While Lucid’s "Virtu" GPU virtualization software still has some rough edges— you must manually designate programs you want it to apply to, and not all programs can be so designated— but within these relatively minor constraints it works very well, imposing roughly a 5% performance penalty as compared with a "native" Radeon 6850 in my testing, and saving a significant amount of power when the performance of the discrete video card isn’t needed. Remember, though, that multi-GPU setups cannot benefit from Virtu’s i-Mode and its power-saving features. Perhaps NVIDIA’s forthcoming Synergy will enable power savings for NVIDIA SLI setups.

Even without Virtu, you can connect two monitors (one to the VGA port and one to the HDMI port) to the motherboard while still using monitors connected to a separate graphics card: four monitors total with only one card! While this isn’t the same as AMD Eyefinity (you wouldn’t get decent 3D performance on the monitors connected to the motherboard in this mode), it’s still a nice option for some setups.

When speaking with an ASUS representative about this motherboard, I was asked if there was anything I didn’t like about the board, or any improvements I could suggest. While the board doesn’t come with some of the extra features of ASUS’ "Extreme" and "Formula" level motherboards (but I’m sure we’ll see fancier Z68 motherboards from ASUS), I don’t think most of those features matter much any more. Voltage read points for extreme overclockers? Almost irrelevant with the advent of ultra-accurate digital power systems. External overclocking or status panels? with ASUS’ BT go! feature, my iPhone does more than these ever could. Extra fans for motherboard chipsets? not needed with the cool-running Cougar Point silicon. On-board POST display? OK, I’ll take that one…

The features that really matter are there: evolved versions of ASUS’ TPU and EPU processors; more overclocking options than I can really count, native USB 3 header with rear-panel breakout for cases without USB 3 support, four SATA 6G and four USB 3 ports, and nifty things like MemOK!, where pressing a single button will reset your memory to guaranteed-bootable settings, and AI Charger, and probably more stuff I forgot to mention- this motherboard has so many features and capabilities that there simply wasn’t time to get to them all for this review.

I’d prefer more PCI-E lanes, but that’s really up to Intel, not ASUS…but maybe a "P8Z68 Extreme" board could incorporate an NF200 chip! Really, though, the only things I’d change about this board’s hardware are:

Use DIMM sockets with latches on both sides. Originally, the single-latch sockets were designed to clear a large video card in the first slot, but unless someone makes a really long PCI-E x1 card, this isn’t a consideration for this board. The single latch design makes it possible to have memory not fully inserted in the slot; with a dual-latch design, you know it’s right if you can close both latches.
Ditch the middle PCI slot and replace it with a PCI-E x4.

but that’s all I’ve got. this board is the perfect platform for any enthusiast looking to build a high performance Sandy Bridge system. The features and performance of this motherboard with a Core i7 2600K processor are so compelling that the X58 platform, for all its extra PCI-E lanes, available hexacore processors, and triple-channel memory system, just doesn’t seem very relevant any more. And I’ve heard from an industry insider that it’s very likely that the forthcoming Ivy Bridge processors, whose 22nm process and 3D transistors will enable another substantial jump in performance (although I discount reports that desktop Ivy Bridge processors will be able to run on two "AA" batteries and be fast enough to rip holes in spacetime) will be able to run on Z68 platforms with nothing but a BIOS upgrade. It’s a rumor, true, but still…
