First iPad, iPhone 3GS Outselling Newer Android-Based Products « Android Wires Blog

Sales of older generation Apple products are outpacing more current Android-based devices, new research reveals.

A survey from Canaccord Genuity originally reported by AppleInsider shows that while the iPhone 4 is “by far” the best-selling device at both ATT and Verizon stores, products like the first-generation iPad and the iPhone 3GS are still selling quite well.

“Interestingly, our April checks indicated continued strong demand for the iPhone 3GS at ATT and iPad 1 at Verizon, as these older generation products with reduced prices often outsold new Android products,” Canaccord analyst Michael Walkley said in a note to investors. “We believe this highlights Apple’s significant competitive advantage, and these older products help Apple offer a tiered pricing strategy at key channels.”

Canaccord found that the iPhone 3GS, which is competitively priced at $49, outsells Android-based smartphones like the HTC Inspire or the Motorola Atrix. Unsurprisingly, Walkley also said the iPad is the best-selling tablet on the market. By contrast, other tablets have had “modest sales,” such as RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook, the Motorola Xoom, or the Samsung Galaxy Tab.

It seems other tablet makers are faced with an uphill battle when it comes to competing with Apple. In fact, a recent DigiTimes report said that in light of lackluster sales of non-Apple tablets, many companies have to deal with the issue of excess inventory of their devices. Apparently, the market has a limited demand of just 20 million units, while there is only demand for 20 million tablets this year.

In spite of a decline in Apple sales in the first quarter down to 4.69 million units from the previous number of 7.33 units, Walkley also noted that both the 16GB and 32GB first-gen iPads sold out within two weeks after the launch of the iPad 2.

However, Android still has a strong foothold on the smartphone market. The most recent numbers from comScore showed Google’s mobile platform to be the most popular OS in the country, with 31.2 percent of the market. RIM sits in the second spot with 30.4 percent of the space, and Apple holds steady with about a quarter (24.7 percent) of the mobile market.

For now, it appears Apple has benefited from discounting older-generation models of its popular products.

OhGizmo! » Archive » OZAKI iCarry Bike iPhone Amplifier

By Andrew Liszewski

It’s most definitely not the first passive speaker system for the iPhone that relies on physics to boost the performance of its built-in speaker. But I’m pretty sure it’s the first specifically designed to mount on the handlebars of your bike. The iCarry Bike L from Germany-based OZAKI includes a mounting arm that keeps your iPhone in easy reach when riding, yet fully protected, and a seashell-like bottom that both amplifies the sounds coming from your phone and those going to it. so in theory it should improve its speakerphone performance as well. But for the $50 they’re asking for it (according to The Gadgeteer) you’re probably just better off getting a Bluetooth headset and keeping your iPhone in your pocket.

Nokia Phone Solar Charger

Do you possess a Nokia phone? are you interested in using a solar powered charger? Have you seen about the Nokia Solar Charger? These are a lot questions that consumers just like you have been inquiring in their minds whenever they hear about solar cell phone battery and other related solar products. Now when you finish reading this article, you will know about one of the best Nokia solar chargers that has been reviewed and works for only Nokia cell phones. the reason you will know is because there is a link that leads to the company that sells this type of solar charger for Nokia phones only, but not smartphone Nokia phones.

The Nokia Solar Charger also called the NSC57 and can charger very quickly within 3-4 hours if I remember correctly. There are 6 adapter pieces that are included but it is recommended that if you have a Nokia phone that you use this and not if you have another type of cell phone. There is an USB cord included in this package so you can charge with your laptop or desktop computer for an even quicker charge.

Now here is something that you really want to know, “How and where would I use this?” Do you spend a lot of time outdoors or on the road? And if so, does your phone die? I know that Nokia phones unless they are smartphones, die rather quickly especially if you text or browse often, even smartphones die quickly. the best part about this solar phone charger is that you’ll be able to take it anywhere with you as it is very lightweight less than 1 pound, about 220 grams to be exact. And if you travel often, then you probably have a backpack or something similar. This Nokia Solar Charger is able to be attached to the outside of any bag that and when you have it facing the sun, it will be able to charge, you won’t have to hold it and play around with it. it is a smart idea to keep it facing the sun while charging. Now there has been some talk that it can’t charge through windows and the truth is that it won’t charge as efficiently as it would as if it was in the outside area with nothing blocking it.

This is a perfect solar charger for camping, you spend all day outdoors and usually have some type of bag and of course a tent. you would love this once you realized you could charge other items like an mp3 player, but the best use would be your Nokia cell phone. Some people realize when they buy it that they can indeed use it for their other devices like GPS unit and mp3 players, but I like to stay focused on what customers say about the Nokia solar charger that way readers are not misled. you see, solar technology is a great technology once someone understands the basics of it and that it can be used quite easily, but if they do not understand they tend to get disappointed, but not in your case, as you probably found this by searching for Nokia solar chargers or something to that affect

Refurbished iPhone – Discover Why a Refurbished iPhone is As Good As New!

Why? because they are rebuilt and upgraded with the latest bells and whistles and usually were previously unused. these refurbished iPhones may have been returned for various reasons and usually are still under the manufacturers original warranty. for instance, an Apple iPhone may have never been touched by a consumer and was a quality control model that was tested and put through many tests at the factory. It would be sold as a refurbished Apple iPhone rather than a new one even though it was never used.

An AT&T refurbished iPhone may have just been a floor model and as a refurbished iphone it is a great bargain. Many times the package was opened and cannot be sold as new so the retail AT&T,or Apple iPhone dealer sends it back to the factory and it is repackaged and sold at a discount many times with upgrades added. Depending on which iPhone you are going to buy you can sometimes get a service contract that is as good as the original warranty.

Many refurbished products such as the Apple iPhone, or ATT iPhone 3G have sustained minor damage during shipping or perhaps just the outer packaging was torn or damaged. these will be sent back to the factory and repackaged and sometimes sold as refurbished iPhones. Usually the damage is very minor and cannot be seen yet they are just as good as brand new iPhones and after leaving the factory for the second time they are top quality iPhones at a discounted price.

Sometimes refurbished iPhones were floor models or demonstration models in the store. these are eventually sold as refurbished and great bargains are to be scooped up by savvy, price conscious or discount buyers looking for the best prices.

Whether your looking for an Apple iPhone, an AT&T iPhone or any unlocked iPhone refurbished model there are some great deals out there that will give you an one that is just as good as new at a price that can’t be beat. Even older iPhones are now being upgraded and repackaged and are of the same or better quality than those sold as new. Refurbished iPhones are as good as new and are a better value.

The Best IPhone 3G In-Car Charger

The market already inundated with the variety in-car chargers for iPod and iPhone, it has really become a headache for the customer to select best out of them. In car charger for the Apple iPhone 3G provides power for your iPhone 3G when in your car.

The In-Charge Auto by XtremeMac is claimed to be made especially for iphone. However you need to ensure that by looking at the technical specifications as it can also result in some complications. we have found lot of people quoting their bad experiences with speaker docks and in-car chargers causing the logic board on their iPhone to burn out resulting to fried iphone. Some of you can’t even imagine it.

Be careful about the output line directly coming from the 12V output because if you are feeding 12V ti your iPhone which requires only 5V your iphone can’t react funny or dye completely after a few days or weeks of use.

Car chargers for the iPhone and iPod use the FireWire ports on the connector that can easily sink input voltage from 8-30VDC. the iPhone can handle that voltage with no problem from the FireWire port.

Extrememac iPhone In Car Charger Safely charges your iPhone or iPod in your vehicle. it is compatible with any standard 12V power/accessory outlet. Extrememac also offers superior protection in the form of a self-resetting fuse giving peace of mind with LED status to indicate connection regulated properly.

Best iPhone Cases for Travel

The iPhone may just replace the Leatherman as the most valuable travel-sized multi-tool. sure it can’t whittle some kindling wood for your campfire or open a can of soup, but it can make airline reservations, help you find a campsite, tell you which way is North, and help you keep your travel documents organized.

If you’re trying to pack light, the iPhone can cut down on the number of gadgets and dodads you bring along on your trip. there are travel organizer apps that keep all your travel documents together and guidebook and National Parks apps that cut down on your need for heavy books and maps.only downside of relying on your iPhone while traveling is that it is pretty darn fragile. what is worse than losing your hotel confirmation documents, but watching your unprotected iPhone fly out of your pocket, smashing onto the concrete, and obliterating all your travel documents at once. I personally want a phone that I can toss around a bit, so I am not a good candidate for an iPhone.

If you’re going to travel with your iPhone, a protective case is a necessity. it seems like everyone is making an iPhone case these days so you will find no shortage of options. A search on Amazon comes up with over 50,000 items, so sheesh how do you decide?

First consider how rough you tend to be on electronics. How long did your last phone last? if less than a year, I would highly recommend an ultra-tough case. Cases offer everything from minimal protection to highly impact resistant, waterproof and shock-absorbent protection.

Second, do you want your case to be anything more than just a case. there are cases that hold extra power and boost your phone’s GPS capabilities. Lastly, consider style and color. This can be a tough thing to consider last because I am betting you want to keep your iPhone as sleek and sexy as it looks out of the box. unfortunately cases that protect the most tend to look bulky and less attractive.

Here are some of the best iPhone cases for travel listed from minimal protection to hardcore:

If you have slippy fingers the Speck PixelSkin Case for iPhone may be perfect for you. the lightweight PixelSkin helps protect your iPhone from bumps and scrapes while providing a nice grip to prevent dropping. Featuring openings for all the iPhone’s ports and things, you easily access all phone features. only downsides are lack of a screen cover and not so good of protection from significant falls.

>>Buy Speck Pixel Skin Case for Iphone

The Otterbox Impact Case for iPhone provides all access to your phone’s features while encasing it in a durable silicone skin with a shock absorbing inner core. the case is plenty grippy to protect against drops and it also comes with a self-adhering film to protect the screen and a cleaning cloth.

This case adds quite a bit of protection without a whole lot of bulk. it will protect from bumps and dings, but it is not recommended for water protection.

>>Buy Otterbox Impact Case for iPhone

The Magellan Tough Case not only protects your iPhone from the elements but enhances its GPS capabilities and transfers power to your iPhone or iPod to increase the battery life of the device.

Totally waterproof and shock resistant, this case is perfect for the outdoor adventurer who wants to enjoy their iPhone in the great outdoors without having to worry about damaging it from the elements. the Tough Case offers excellent protection while also offering full access to the touch screen, hard buttons, and audio jack so you can fully interact with the device. the current Magellan Tough Case is only compatible with the iPhone3G, 3GS, and iPod Touch (2nd generation).

>>Buy Magellan Tough Case

The Pelican i1015 Case is designed for the iPhone and iPod Touch, but it also fits a laundry list of Blackberry smartphones. Although you can’t actually make calls or interact with the touch screen, the Pelican case is a safe place to store you iPhone while you’re not using it if you’re say on a river trip or beside a pool – though you can listen to tunes via the external audio jack.

Pelican Cases are water-resistant, crushproof, and dustproof with a lifetime guarantee of excellence. I’ve been using the Pelican 1010 Micro Case for my digital camera so I can vouch for Pelican’s ultratoughness. Too bad they don’t make a fully functional case.

>>Buy Pelican i1015 Case

Often described as the tank of all iPhone cases, the Otterbox iPhone Defender Case offers some hardcore protection for your iPhone. the high quality polycarbonate shell is combined with a shock-absorbent skin and a clear protective membrane over the touch screen. the case provides full access to all iPhone functions, plus you can take a photo and charge the phone with the case still on.

Only downside is that the case is a bit bulky, but that is what you’re going to get with rugged protection. the case is available in yellow, black, pink, and white. Caution, the Defender looks waterproof but it is not.

review of video applications for the iphone 3G

it seems that i have a habit of purchasing things right before a new version of whatever it is i am purchasing is announced. the latest occurrence was upgrading to CS4 hours before CS5 was announced, but previous to that, it was (finally) purchasing an iphone just before the release of the 3GS, which has a slightly better camera and also shoots video. fortunately, some folks created applications for the archaic 3G that provides video recording capability, so i wanted to check them out. there are other applications that can stream to an external server, but i really wanted to look for applications that could record on the phone itself, and would allow me to share the videos via e-mail or by uploading to a social website like facebook. the two big players in this category are Camera plus Pro and iVideoPhone.

in general, both applications do a fine job for what they are; a way for me to record video without having to shell out the money for upgrading my phone. there are other options for better quality video on the cheap (e.g., the flip recorder), so these applications belong to the “the best (video) camera is the one you have with you” mantra.

both applications capture video and audio. both applications provide similar output quality and resolutions, both a low resolution (160×200) and a high resolution (320×400) setting. at high resolution, the camera plus pro documentation says there is a one minute limitation for a video, but i’ve been able to go over that.

both have a number of filters that you can apply to your videos for creative effects. getting the videos out of the application was pretty straight forward, although trying to e-mail the video from the application proved to be problematic, i suspect because of an issue the iphone has e-mailing large attachments. i was able to get slightly better e-mail success by exporting from the applications to the camera roll, then copying and pasting the video from the roll in to an e-mail on the iphone (i was not give options e-mail or SMS a video file from the camera roll). more realistically, though, i’ll export from the application to the camera roll (quality is the same), grab the video files off the iphone using iphoto (windows explorer works, too, for windows users), and do my e-mailing and uploading from outside of the iphone.

both applications provided a mechanism to upload directly to youtube, facebook,  and twitter, but ivideophone also included flickr and a few other options. uploading the raw quicktime movies (exported to the camera roll) to facebook and flickr outside of the applications worked smoothly; both services were able to process the exported video files.

that said, both applications are very problematic, so for a novice non-tech-savvy user, that might present a problem with actually using the application, and particularly when you want to get your videos off the iphone using the application itself, versus downloading it from the iphone on to a computer and sharing the video from there.

  • record video on the iphone 3g
  • low (160×200) and high (320×400) resolution recording
  • video and audio
  • export to iphone camera roll
  • upload to youtube, facebook, twitter
  • filters for special effects
  • still pictures and movies
  • provides basic editing for still photos
  • tagging and geotagging
  • password protect content
  • user interface takes a bit to get used to; cumbersome to navigate sometimes when i just want to launch and record
  • recording at high quality was problematic and had to reboot the phone a few times to get it to record at all or record more than a few seconds
  • default capture mode is still image, so i have to switch it to video every time i want to record something

ivideocamera version 1.5$0.99

  • more export options, including ftp (but exporting is really buggy)
  • more simple user interface; launch and record
  • some “live” filters so you can see what you’re getting at record time
  • wi-fi transer option
  • more filters
  • more upload options: flickr, vimeo, 12 seconds, ftp, SMS
  • exporting buggy, especially e-mail (crashes) and ftp (tells me i’m not connected to a wireless network even when i am)

i had some stability problems with camera plus pro initially, but there was an upgrade last week and the application seems a little more stable. i had to reboot in order to get the high quality record to work at all, or to record more than a few seconds.

the geotagging was a nice feature, but flickr didn’t seem to recognize the geotag on an exported video, so i’m not sure if the tag makes it out to the camera roll. since camera plus pro doesn’t export directly to flickr from inside the application, i’m not sure if the geotagging is useful for anything outside of the application. camera plus pro also allows for keyword tagging, too, and maybe that’s somewhat useful for uploading to facebook (assuming it carries over during upload); i wasn’t able to get the upload to facebook working.

this review wasn’t about still photography, but camera plus pro does provide some interesting features for taking, tagging, and processing still images, as well, although i like my current iphone apps that i use for still photography, so i doubt camera plus pro would get much use from me in that area.

ivideocamera is a video recorder, and that’s about it. a simple user interface, the application opens up and is ready to record. you can optionally apply a filter; some you can see as you record, others are applied after you stop recording.

ivideocamera has more export options than camera plus pro, including flickr (which works great) and ftp 9which i was not able to get to work). there is also an option to send a video via sms (which the iphone itself wouldn’t let me do), but the company claims it’s “experimental”. exporting to the camera roll was straight forward, but interestingly, my hosting company provides a mechanism to convert movies to flash video format; when it processes the ivideocamera files, the resulting FLV file is much larger than the original quicktime movie, even with the exact same settings used to process the camera plus pro video files. the final FLV also looks blockier than the camera plus pro video converted the exact same way, so not really sure what’s going on there. when i uploaded to flickr, the processed video looked much smoother.

i tried to export to facebook, but i couldn’t get my credentials entered; the app kept either leaving the login screen or submitting after i entered 5 or 6 characters.

if you’re looking for a cheap and easy solution to record video with the iphone 3g, this is a good option.

my final pick is ivideocamera.

my primary criteria for which application to pick is video quality, but honestly, the quality difference between the applications is a) extremely similar and b) not really THAT important given the overall quality of what the applications and iphone are capable of that there wasn’t any real difference between the two applications. (thats the politically correct way of saying that the video is really crappy either way compared to a “real” camera, so the differences between them aren’t really noticeable) next was price, but the difference between $0.99 and $1.99 isn’t that big of a deal, either. i don’t really care about camera plus pro’s still image capabilities, so that was not a factor in my decision. really, it came down to which application i could get in to and start recording with faster since the typical usage will be “hey, that’s cool! quick, record!”. the added benefits of a flickr uploader and (if i can get it working) an ftp uploader are also very nice benefits for me. geotagging a video for uploading would have been cool, but it really didn’t work ideally in camera plus pro, either, so maybe that will be something for a future release.

either way, recording video on a 3g and delaying the cost of a hardware upgrade is priceless!

Jabra Cruiser II Bluetooth Car Kit Speakerphone – Bluetooth Bluetooth Speakerphones – iPhone in Style

excellent, but.. User: David Strom, Nov 12, 2010

Pros:  Good microphones and noise suppression Cons:  FM quality depends upon open spectrum

The Cruiser II is an excellent piece of hardware hobbled only by the limitations of finding an open FM band. I bought the Cruiser II with the hope of providing sync-like functions in an older car. It performs its functions admirably, and for a reasonable cost. Speakerphone quality, I am told, is excellent. It does transmit both phone and audio playback through the cars FM stereo quite well, hampered only by the lack of available clear FM spectrum. The transmitter is plenty strong enough, but here in Minneapolis (and I assume every city of any size), there is hardly any spectrum available that is clear of significant interference. As a consequence there is occasional interference from outside broadcasts, hindering high-quality sound transmission. I have found the compromise acceptable–the Cruiser II is much cheaper than getting a system installed in the aftermarket, but ultimately the sound quality is inferior to an in-built system that connects directly with your car stereo. Hence the 4 stars. very good, but hampered by things outside Jabras control.
