Black’s Law Dictionary: NO Substitutes

Apple is proving its apps aren’t just for games and trivial time wasters. Legal practitioners are flocking to the flood of new apps developed specifically for them. Earlier this year, Thomson Reuters released its Black’s Law Dictionary as an app. So far, it has been a success and the company anticipates releasing its more popular titles in the app store. The best part about the Black’s Law Dictionary app is that not only does it regurgitate definitions, but it also has audio pronunciations. The embedded audio content can pronounce terms with different regional dialects—which can really save face next time you walk into a courtroom in the South and try to pronounce voir dire. Added bonus: no need to lug around the 6.5 pound, 1882 paged book! It is a more expensive app (at $49.99), but it is still cheaper than the paper version. Despite the high price, this legal dictionary is the holy grail of legalese, so other cheaper competitors just can’t stand up to it.

There are seven other legal dictionary apps out there, ranging in price from $0.99 – $14.99. Yup, you guessed it: the $0.99 app is the worst of the bunch. The Dictionary of Legal and Law Terms is not a comprehensive reference. It is better suited for a pro se defendant looking to sound the part while trying to get out of a traffic ticket. The other apps (Oxford and Barron’s) are adequate for definitional purposes, but they don’t offer the embedded audio content, which really makes the Black’s Law Dictionary app stand out.

Don’t Be Fooled by Imitation App Stores

Several wireless phone carriers are getting ready to take a bite out Apple’s App store. Makes sense since sales for apps were $5 billion this year. (There are estimates that by 2014, it will be $25 billion). So far, Apple offers over 65,000 apps ranging from anything to reading golf greens to digital radio to classifieds to games. Apple says these apps have been downloaded over 1.5 billion times. As part of the plan, imitators are trying to lure away developers and partner with global carriers. Just remember, no matter what type of hype surrounds these new stores, it doesn’t mean they know how to pull it off. Many carriers just don’t have the software and design expertise to seal the deal—and regardless, if it’s not Apple, it’s not a real App.

Free iPhone Screen Repair?

Who wouldn’t love to get a broken iphone screen repaired for FREE? I know I would, but unfortunately that would put a company out of business.

Update 3.0.1 Fixes What?

Some of you may have noticed when you connected your iPhones to iTunes you got the option to upgrade to 3.0.1. What is 3.0.1 you may ask yourself? Is this a fix to many of the issues with 3.0?

The answer is No.

On July 31st security expert Charlie Miller and his fellow researcher Collin Mulliner, released a big loophole in the iPhone’s SMS. This loophole is a security issue that allows someone to take control of your iPhone through a text message. If you receive any text messages with a small square character, DELETE it right away.

This security issues allows the hacker to gain complete control over your iPhone’s native functions. Some issues are opening websites, using the camera, or even making phone calls.

Miller and Mulliner had known about the issue for about a month. They did the right thing when they found out about this security issue, they notified Apple.

Apple worked diligently to figure out how and why this security issue arose. The have recently put out an updated to the 3.0 software.

The ISSUE: According to Apple article HT3754 – “A memory corruption issue exists in the decoding of SMS messages. Receiving a maliciously crafted SMS message may lead to an unexpected service interruption or arbitrary code execution. This update addresses the issue through improved error handling. Credit to Charlie Miller of Independent Security Evaluators, and Collin Mulliner of Technical University Berlin for reporting this issue.”

On June 06, 2009 RSA Security, Inc released the much awaited RSA SecurID Software Token for the iPhone. This is a huge step for the iPhone becoming more of an Enterprise device. I’m glad that the developers at RSA realized that there is a demand for this App. If your company uses RSA SecurID then talk with them about getting the iphone users set up with this new app.

Installing the RSA Softtoken on your iPhone with our HTML Converter…

To install the RSA Softtoken on your iphone you need to create a clickable link in a email. You also need a special converter found at RSA’s website. This can be a timely process to follow the directions provided with the RSA SecurID Software Token Converter. Our developers here at iPhone Download World have made the process a little bit easier by creating a batch file that does a lot of the work for you. There is another website that offers a similar process but they have it all online. (I don’t know about you, but I would not submit my company’s security information to some random website) That’s why we created this batch file. You can download it and run it on you own machine.

What you will need to set up RSA on the iphone.

An iphone with the RSA app installed. Get the RSA App
The RSA SecurID Software Token Converter found on their website
iPhone Download World’s HTML Token Converter
You company must also have purchased RSA Authentication Manager & Software Token Seeds from RSA

Follow these simple steps to get an HTML file that you can email to your iphone:

Once you have everything downloaded, unzip the RSA SecurID Software Token Converter to c:\TokenConverter240
Place the HTML Token Converter into that folder
In your RSA Manager create or reissue a software token
Place that software token in the c:\TokenConverter240\ folder
Click on the HTML Token Converter and enter the full name of the software token i.e. xxxxxx.sdtid and hit enter
It will then create a text file called Token.txt and then create a HTML file called Token.html
Email that HTML file as an attachment to the iphone
Open the attachment and click on the link in the attachment
The RSA Software on the iPhone will then install the token

**NOTE** if you unzip the software to a different folder other than c:\TokenConverter240\ then you will have to edit the batch file to the correct folder. The Batch code line is you will need to edit is [start c:\TokenConverter240\TokenConverter240.exe %INPUT% -iphone -o c:\TokenConverter240\Token.txt]

iPhone 3.0 Fails Cellular Data Network:Resolved

RESOLVED SEE BELOW

I got into work this morning and had a few emails from some of my company’s users that read something like this…

I updated my iPhone 3G to the new iPhone 3.0 OS last night and now i can’t get any of my emails. I receive and error “Could not activate cellular data network: You are not subscribed to a cellular data service” Help ME!!!

I first did some checking with our wireless carrier AT&T. The phone lines had the proper data service attached to them. I tried to reset the network connections, that fixed one of the problem iPhones. I still had two more with issues.

I started searching the internet for some answers. The number one thing I found you can try and do is to reset your network connections.

To do this: Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset Network Settings

The next solution I found was to manually set up the APN settings. This only works if your carrier allow you to change those settings. My company uses AT&T and they do not allow you to change those settings… or maybe it’s an IT policy that we push down to the phones, I’m not to sure. You can check out the solution that I found on the macmend.com site.

I will be troubleshooting this issue throughout the day and let you know what other solutions I come up with.
