Four Ways an iPhone Can Make Your Life Easier

Once you get past all the hype, the Apple iPhone really is a remarkable piece of modern technology. Maybe you’ve resisted getting one because it seems to be a fad, or you’re under the impression that most people who have an iPhone only bought it to be trendy or look cool. While that may be the case for some people, other iPhone owners will tell you that having the device contributes a lot more to their productivity than a regular cell phone [goingcellular]. Aside from being able to send and receive e-mail, stay in touch with clients, and network, an iPhone can actually make your life a little easier.

Save Money – Newspaper coupons have been around for ages. Some people spend hours clipping and organizing them, and then planning their grocery shopping around them to get the best deals. Then came online coupons, which made things a little easier.

Now there are coupons for your cell phone. In particular, there are a couple of iPhone apps that are intended to help you find local deals not just at the grocery store, but at department stores, and home improvement warehouses. One of the most popular coupon apps is Cellfire [cellfire], but also give Yowza!! a try.

Get Where You’re Going – How many times have you traveled to a new city, either for work or pleasure, and spent much of your time there finding your way around? Just locating a place to eat can be time consuming and stressful when your time is limited, and you’re hungry. And walking around a city with your nose in a map just screams tourist and makes you a target for thieves. Enter the iPhone, and apps like Lonely Planet Travel Guides.

Lonely Planet [lonelyplanet] is well known for its thorough and informative travel books. Now they’ve taken their travel experience and knowledge, and put it into an iPhone app. Find things to do and see, and great places to eat with just a few taps on the touchscreen. This app currently includes information for 34 cities, with more additions planned.

Find a Movie and Buy Tickets – Remember when, in order to find out what movies were playing and at what times, you had to buy a newspaper? Then Moviefone came along, which you could call and a recording would tell you what was playing at your local theater, and at what time. It was a little more convenient, but still cumbersome, having to wait for the recorded, mechanical voice to get through all the listings you were interested in.

Now, all you have to do is power up your iPhone, and download the Flixster app. It lists theaters that are close to your location, and you can select the ones you frequent as favorites so they’re always at the top of the list. Then you can see what movies are playing at the theater you select, and at what time. In fact, you can get movie listings and showtimes up to a week in advance. You can also get information about the movies, see and leave reviews, and watch trailers.

The best part is, you can do all this when you spontaneously decide to go see a movie while you’re at the mall, and you don’t have to buy a newspaper or listen to a robot voice to decide what to see. Even better, download the Fandango app [fandango], and you can buy tickets right from your phone and not have to stand in line at the box office.

Pay Your Wireless Bill – It happens to everyone. You go on vacation, or you’re visiting family without access to a computer, and your cell phone bill is due. If you don’t pay it promptly, your service will be interrupted, causing even more of an inconvenience. What to do?

Well, you could call your wireless provider and pay over the phone, sure. Or, if you have an iPhone, which means you have service with AT&T [goingcellular], you can use the myWireless app to pay your bill directly from your phone. No need to call, wait on hold, and have a discussion with anyone. With this app, you can pay your bill in less than a minute, and not have to worry about being without service because of a forgotten payment.

IPhone 5: Exciting New Features

Although Apple has not released any news about an iPhone 5, there is a lot of speculation about it. The iPhone 5 is anticipated to be released in the summer of 2011, coinciding with Apple’s traditional June-July annual release of new iPhone models. January 2011 is another possible release date, enabling Apple to release an earlier fix for the antenna problem that has been a problem with the iPhone 4. Although that fix could be in another iPhone 4 version rather than an iPhone 5.

Some rumored features that the iPhone 5 may contain are an improved operating system, (iOS 5), ability to access 4G networks, a faster processor (1.5 GHz), improved battery life (up to 14 hours talk time on 3G and 7 hours on 4G), and additional carriers besides AT&T (Verizon is a possible carrier soon to be iPhone compatible). Video chat, which is now only usable on Wi-Fi, should be available on the 3G and 4G networks. Face recognition and higher video resolutions will also be new features. An eight-megapixel camera is supposedly in development for the iPhone 5.

The new iPhone 5 may be radio-frequency identification (RFID) enabled. With RFID, the iPhone could function like a credit card. Users could pay for items wirelessly simply by waving their phone over a panel at checkout. Apple apparently has a new patent for this technology. Their patent shows how a powerful RFID loop can be built into the circuitry of the iPhone or iPod Touch screen. The RFID loop can act as an RFID tag or as a tag reader.

The iPhone 4 came with 16 GB and 32 GB of memory. The next iPhone will likely have more memory, up to 64GB. It should also include more storage.

The new iPhone 5 is said to be thinner and sleeker than the iPhone 4, with a shiny glass back piece. The screen will be scratch and shatter proof. Users will have the ability to assign different tones to different email accounts. True GPS will be built in. The price for the iPhone 5 should be similar to the current price of the iPhone 4.

Apple, as usual, is very secretive about their upcoming plans. If the rumored features actually do appear in a new iPhone 5, they will help the Apple iPhone stay successful in an increasingly competitive market.

eBay Market Heats Up for iPhone 4S

Apple’s latest smartphone device, the iPhone 4S, launched in the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Japan on October 14.

Apple fanatics in every other country around the world are turning to eBay to buy theirs before the official launch.

Although Apple has slashed international shipping times for many countries, eBay auctions may bring the iPhone 4S to early adopters before they can buy them in stores.

eBay currently lists a whopping 8,000 iPhone 4S for sale on its international circuit, in addition to individual country markets.

Some 22 European countries await the iPhone 4S launch on October 28, but that hasn’t stopped people from trying to sell them now via the online marketplace.

Cult of Mac found dozens of listings for the iPhone 4S – ranging from EUR€799.00, or about US$1,100 in various eBay sites. In Brazil, that eBay price levitates to about US$1,300 or 2,300 real.

eBay currently lists a whopping 8,000 iPhone 4S for sale on its international circuit, in addition to the country markets. Prices vary from $1,685.18 for a jailbroken model to a “24 carat gold plated” iPhone 4S for $2,600.

Of course, a healthy dose of caveat emptor is in order: best case scenario, these are the real deal pre-ordered in the US. Worst case: they’re pricey knock-offs.

Anyone willing to take a chance (and spend the cash) for an eBay iPhone 4S?

Doodle Jump

Doodle Jump by Lima Sky is a very simple, yet incredibly addictive app for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Since the most recent version’s release in the United States on September 28, 2009 it has been featured by in the Apple App Store in the “New and Noteworthy” and “What’s Hot” categories. Reviewers and users alike agree that Doodle Jump is fun to play and highly addictive for numerous reasons, but the primary feature that has users hooked on the game is its general simplicity. Many reviewers also consider the characters and animations to be charming and creative. Resembling the sketches nearly everyone has doodled in notebook margins, Doodle Jump’s animated characters bring simple scribbles and doodles to life.

Game play is surprisingly simple, which has had a huge impact on the game’s success. The object is simply to guide the cutely sketched main character – known simply as the Doodler – up as high as possible in a series of platforms. The character continues on his upward journey on his own. Sound simple? Hardly. The trick is to guide the character left or right to jump on the right platforms while avoiding landing on a crumbling platform or missing a platform all together. As the game progresses, there are also enemies such as black holes, aliens, and UFOs that can interrupt the character’s trip to the top. They must be avoided or shot by turning the Doodler character into a weapon simply by tapping on the screen. As you guide the Doodler higher and higher you can see other people’s high scores listed in the margin and you can watch the main character bounce past those scores on its way to setting a new high score.

Since its release, Doodle Jump has stayed high on the Apple App Store’s list of Top Paid Apps. In the United States it was the number one top paid arcade game app in April. It has also achieved number one status arcade game, app, and general game in various countries around the world in May, June, July, August, and September. According to many reviews on iTunes and from the media, it is the ideal micro-game, and it is extremely re-playable. As the Doodle Jump gains in popularity it has been referred to as the best game of its type, and with new updates being steadily released its clear that it will continue on its journey to the top.

Shark Alert:100,000 Sharks Filmed Swimming off Florida Coast

An estimate of 100,000 sharks invaded the inshore waters off the East Coast of Florida, according to reports by WPTV.com and the UK Daily Mail.

Steve Irwin, a helicopter pilot with Island Marine Services, was flying 300 feet up and about 100 yards off the beach Sunday when he saw the incredible sight below. Tens of thousands of sharks spread out over a 20-mile span of water. He took out his iPhone 4 and started filming and photographing near Palm Beach. That’s what you see in the photo, though from so far up they actually look more like tens of thousands of tadpoles.

According to WPTV, which has the video on its site, a year ago a shark attacked and killed a man who was kiteboarding off Stuart Beach, so these swimming creatures probably aren’t tadpoles.

Actually, they are believed to be spinner sharks between 3-7 feet, and they were most likely swimming parallel to the beaches between Fort Lauderdale and Jupiter Island in search of baitfish and warmer water, according to the Daily Mail. Their name comes from the spinning leaps they make as part of their feeding strategy.

"It was a truly amazing sight," Irwin told the Daily Mail. "I’ve been a fisherman for 20 years and I also kayak out there and it’s common to see them twist and turn and shoot through the air.

"They’re prevalent at this time of year, but what amazed me was the sheer numbers of them. There were tens of thousands of them — I’d say maybe 100,000. I kept on flying for about 20 miles and they just kept on coming.

"It’s common to see large predatory sharks come in and feed on schools of baitfish [but] the odd thing was I didn’t see any baitfish at all!"

WikiPedia says that spinner sharks are not usually dangerous to humans but may become belligerent when excited by food — whether human or baitfish, we assume. Definitely not worth trying to find out, however.

Top Personal Organizer Apps

Take a look at some of the best contacts and calendar applications for the iPhone that are up at the iTunes’ App Store.

iPhone Integration

Now that smartphone technology has gotten to the point that it integrates almost every practical computer function that most people would need it seems more than logical that it should also act as a personal organizer. The iPhone has some of these personal organizer functions in the contacts and calendar applications that come as standard, but through the iTunes’ App Store you can find some of the best contacts and calendar applications for the iPhone that go way beyond. Here is a look at some of the top personal organizer apps that can take your day to day iPhone functions to the next level.

Planner

If you are looking for a simple application to organize your events, calendar and dates then Planner is a great option. Planner only costs $0.99 and it allows you to include very basic and pertinent information for individual dates. This can include the time, location, notes and information. You can also get really detailed school information in there such as homework schedules, the percentage that will make up the final grade, and even a progress bar. Planner is one of the most basic of all the best contacts and calendar applications for the iPhone, and this is its strength. You will not be able to do everything you need with Planner, but it can meet some of your requests.

Pocket Informant (Calendar and Tasks)

Pocket Informant is maybe the most detailed of all the best contacts and calendar applications for the iPhone. Pocket Informant prides itself as a "GTD based tasks solution" application, which really means that it does full integration and allows for organization at multiple levels. Since there are multiple views in Pocket Informant you have the ability to go back and forth between views and do a full search of your contacts and calendar listings. You can begin breaking tasks and contacts into different sub groups, integrate the iPhone Maps feature, sync up with web services or Google calendar, and so many more functions that it is almost intimidating. If you can get the workflow down, then Pocket Informant is going to dominate your daily scheduling down to the finest moment. The price itself may be Pocket Informant’s main deterrent as it clocks in at $12.99, making it one of the most expensive of all the best contacts and calendar applications for the iPhone.

SmartTime Free Organizer

There are not that many free items amongst the best contacts and calendar applications for the iPhone, so SmartTime Free Organizer really does stand out. What SmartTime Free Organizer does well is present a nice block look that allows you to see a daily view with bubble blocks for things like events and tasks. You can create these blocks very easily by entering information for events and tasks or bringing in information from your calendars and contact lists already on your iPhone. You can also classify events and tasks into sub-categories, like recreation, errands, urgent, family, corporate, or grey flannel. This is also done very easily, which allows this free personal organizer app to really compete against the expensive big boys.

A Personal Assistant

A Personal Assistant is also a free iPhone application, and it works far differently than many of the best contacts and calendar applications for the iPhone. What Personal Assistant does is it takes different accounts you have, such as with banks or online subscriptions, and centralizes them into one source. This is something the other top personal organizer apps tend to ignore. What this allows you to do is send money transfers and check flight times right from the same application. When this is connected with other top personal organizer apps on your iPhone you can really begin to get things done!

iPhone 6 Release Date Rumors: Fingerprint Detection and Other New iPhone Updates

More iPhone 6 rumors have hit the internet. Consumers have been searching online to find out information about the iPhone 6 release date and features. No one knows for sure when the handset will debut, but there has been a lot of speculation over the possibility of Apple launching a new smartphone by June.

One article about the new iPhone says “Apple could be planning to introduce a built-in fingerprint sensor to its next-generation iPhone later this year, which could spell trouble for rival smartphone makers.”

The article analyst Ming-Chi Kuo revealed expectations that the new iPhone, whether called the iPhone 6 or iPhone 5S will have a fingerprint sensor built in to the home button. Kuo has “correctly predicted Apple product launches in the past.”

Fingerprint technology could reduce some considered risks with iOS 6’s Passbook by requiring the user’s fingerprint to unlock the app or verify payments.

Other new Apple product predictions from Kuo include the iPhone 6, with an improved camera and an A7 chip, as well as a less expensive iPhone model available in several colors, a thinner 10″ iPad, and an iPad Mini with a Retina display. Kuo believes the iPhone 6 release date will be sometime in June or July.
