Box.net Brings the Cloud and Collaboration to the iPhone

Palo Alto, CA (PRWEB) September 10, 2009

Box.net today brought the power of the cloud and online collaboration to the iPhone, the fastest growing mobile app development platform. The company’s new OpenBox Mobile program lets iPhone app developers integrate Box.net’s content management and collaboration platform into their apps — providing users with new ways to manage, access and share content on their iPhone. The program is made especially for applications that rely heavily on serving up user-generated content, including productivity documents, text files, PDFs, images, audio, videos and other application-specific files. Launched initially for iPhone developers, OpenBox Mobile will extend to Palm webOS, Android and BlackBerry developers in the near future.

Box.net has been working with a number of iPhone app developers behind the scenes to integrate Box’s content management and sharing capabilities. iPhone apps that feature Box.net integration today include iThoughts, Smart Recorder, iBlueSky and Readdle. QuickOffice, iRec, JotNot and mySticky are also working on Box.net integration and will be launching soon.

Box.net provides flexible online collaboration that currently helps more than 50,000 businesses easily share content, move company file systems online, and create team workspaces. The company’s open developer platform has given Box.net customers the ability to do more with their content using some of the best third-party services from Google, FedEx, eFax, Salesforce.com and dozens of others. OpenBox Mobile extends the open platform to the iPhone, giving Box.net customers additional ways to do more with their content on-the-go.

“OpenBox Mobile is a major component of our overall strategy to provide an open platform that gives customers choices and the power to do more with their content using best-of-breed services they want to use,” said Aaron Levie, co-founder and CEO of Box.net. It’s an approach that continues to re-inforce Box.net’s position as a powerful alternative to Microsoft SharePoint for cloud-based content management and collaboration.

According to a recent survey by ABI Research, mobile cloud computing will deliver annual revenues of more than $20 billion in the next five years, yet there are barriers that must be overcome for mobile cloud computing success. Box.net’s new OpenBox Mobile program will help developers – and their customers – overcome hardware limitations to derive a host of benefits.

“Box.net’s OpenBox Mobile brings the power of sharing and collaboration to the iPhone,” said Craig Scott, creator of the iThoughts mind mapping application for iPhone and iPod Touch. “By integrating Box.net into iThoughts, we eliminate the need for our users to constantly sync their iPhone and PC to access, share and collaborate on content created in iThoughts. With Box.net, our users can realize much more of the potential the iPhone has to offer.”

Benefits to Developers

Mobile app developers are giving consumers so many great apps to create all kinds of content – and ultimately, people want to share content, they want to protect it and they want to access it in as many places as possible. OpenBox Mobile:

  • gives app developers the tools to deliver this functionality quickly and easily in their apps,
  • helps developers get around some key limitations in developing for mobile devices – working with a fixed amount of storage on the iPhone, a siloed content creation experience for the user, and the difficulties around sharing content from mobile apps; and
  • puts their apps front and center with the more than 3 million users and 50,000 businesses that use Box

Benefits to Consumers

iPhone apps users are frustrated that they cannot easily share content from within their mobile apps. And by using iPhone apps with Box.net integration, consumers can:

  • save and protect all the content they create on their mobile apps in one place with Box.net including productivity documents, audio files, images, video or any other file.
  • eliminate the need to constantly sync an iPhone and PC to access content – whether it’s created in a mobile app or a desktop app,
  • eliminate having to choose which content – from growing list of content – to keep locally on their mobile device; and
  • access a platform that makes all content instantly accessible and sharable.

Access to OpenBox Mobile

The OpenBox Mobile API is free and iPhone app developers can get started by going to box where they can create a Box.net account and then sign up to join the developers program. After setting up an account, developers can review documentation for the API, sample code for mobile integrations and the other programs offered, as well as directions to start a new project on the OpenBox platform. Developers can get started on projects on their own immediately as well as receive online assistance from Box.net’s platform team.

About Box.net, Inc.

Founded in 2005, Box.net (box) now serves over 50,000 companies from small businesses to Fortune 1000 that look to Box to simplify online content management, accelerate team productivity and connect employees with a familiar interface that anyone can use. Box.net is a privately held company headquartered in Palo Alto, CA, and is backed by venture capital firm Draper Fisher Jurvetson and U.S. Venture Partners.

iPhone 5 Release Date Rumors & News: Apple Testing Prototypes with New 4-inch Display

Some of the latest iPhone 5 release date rumors and news says Apple is testing prototypes if the new iPhone 5’s 4-inch display? On one hand, it makes complete sense for Apple to launch their sixth generation iOS 6 smartphone with a larger display. However, the other hand is finding the handset rather bulky and awkward. Will a larger gadget be an annoyance to veteran Apple enthusiasts?

A recent article states Apple is working on two prototypes of the smartphone model. Both “early-build models have a larger display, measuring 3.95 inches diagonally, with a resolution of 1136 X 640 pixels.”

So if the above information is correct then the rumors of the next iPhone having a 4-inch display are true. It looks like Apple fanatics may want to get ready to having a slightly bulkier handset to tote around! The article goes on to say the two prototypes, “codenamed N41AP and N42AP, are in early EVT (Engineering Validation Test) stage of development where one of them will be approved for mass manufacturing” for the iPhone 5 release date.

What are your thoughts on this latest iPhone 5 release date rumor? Do you think Apple is testing two prototypes with the same larger display size? Will you be buying the new handset when it launches later this year?

iPhone 5 will support 4G LTE wireless network

Apple announced the impending release of the iPhone 5, the ultimate smartphone updated with 4G LTE capabilities. Analysts expect the phone to become the most popular iPhone yet and have social, political and economic implications for people around the world.

Forced Labor Redux

Since taking the helm at Apple, CEO Tim Cook seemed committed to resolving the labor issues that have tainted one of the world’s largest corporations. Chinese workers living in conditions similar to slavery have killed themselves to avoid another day working on Apple production lines managed by Foxconn, one of Apple’s largest production partners.

CNN reports that Foxconn, one of the most well-known for-profit abusers of human rights, denies that it has enslaved students to help Apple meet product-launch demands.

Rather than denying the exploitation of students in its factories, the company has assured the world that its student slaves are paid and are free to leave the company at will. Almost 3 percent of the 1.2 million people employed by Foxconn are students.

Unfortunately, a Chinese watchdog group has blown the whistle on the questionable Foxconn practice. Students & Scholars Against Corporate Misbehavior (SACOM) says that schools have shipped their students to Foxconn like cattle to help bolster Apple profits during the iPhone 5 product launch.

Gimme that iPhone 5!

Despite the massive human suffering that powers the Apple product line, analysts seem to believe that American consumers will lead the world’s demand for yet another blood-stained iPhone product. After all, fast 4G LTE data connections are more valuable than human life.

Apple is able to sell the iPhone 5 at affordable prices in the United States and other countries thanks to the exploitation of Chinese workers, students and children.

Political Payoff?

Well-known for its overt support for the Obama regime and the U.S. Democrat Party, Apple’s release of the iPhone 5 could bolster the lackluster American economy in time to affect election results. Most market watchers believe that demand for 4G will alone make the iPhone 5 one of the biggest product launches of all time.

Economic Boon

The Wall Street Journal reports that the iPhone 5 could significantly boost the U.S. economy by adding $3.2 billion to GDP in the fourth quarter. The new phone from Apple could add as much as .33% to the nation’s GDP. At a time of economic stagnation, the iPhone 5 could make a noticeable difference to the nation as consumers seek to buy the new phone for themselves and others as holiday gifts. In the past, Apple products have had similar economic effects. iPhone 4S sales accounted for one-half of all retail sales growth when it was first released.

Samsung loses another patent trial to Apple, this time in Japan

A Japanese court on Thursday ruled in Apple’s (AAPL) favor in a recent patent infringement lawsuit filed by Samsung # The company had alleged that Apple infringed Samsung’s 3G wireless patents in various iPhone models, however the Tokyo District Court ruled that Apple did not use Samsung’s data transmission technology, The Times of India reported. Apple and Samsung are currently engaged in a patent infringement dispute across 10 countries on five different continents. A Samsung spokesperson said the company was “disappointed by today’s court decision,” but it will continue to “take the measures necessary to protect our intellectual property rights.”

Want To Know What The Next Generation of Apps Will Be Like? Talk to Siri

However, the iPad has not quite “closed the door” on PCs yet. The “$64‑Billion Question” I always hear is, “iPads are great, but people are going to still need to enter text. How will they do that without a real keyboard?” Yes, tablets are “re-wiring” how we interact with “information devices” (f.k.a. PCs). Yes, many creative apps have shown that tablets can be used to create content in ways that keyboards cannot. Nevertheless, these techniques have still not yet answered the $64‑Billion Question. Now, Siri provides the answer.

Siri: Life Doesn’t Need a Keyboard

What iPhone did for smartphones, Siri will do for voice-based recognition and interaction. It is the first application that makes integrated voice interaction with multiple applications (phone, texting, pictures, email, web, picture and music album management) easy and finger-free (touch screen- and keyboard- free). The idea of being able to replace what you did with your hands with your voice is no longer a concept—it is real. Ellis Hamburger of Business Insider recently wrote how surprisingly much this changes your entire way of interacting with information devices, after just two weeks of use.

However, this is just the beginning of much more to come. The introduction of Siri to the (“not a major upgrade,” “limited market”) iPhone 4S triggers two important steps. First, it begins “training early adopters” in voice-driven interaction (while simultaneously creating “buzz” for everyone else). Second, it gives Apple valuable data needed to fully achieve a best-in-class voice-driven usability experience on a much broader scale in “major” product releases.

From, here we will see five things to come—by the end of 2012:

1. Massively Expanded Siri on iPad 3. Apple will launch a massively expanded version of Siri on the iPad 3, drawing upon its much bigger screen and integration with your home or office. Imagine people able to dictate documents, letters, etc. with nice formatting, watching the screen type faster than you can. Imagine extending this music, video, family photo albums, controls for your home, etc.

2. New Siri SDK for iOS. In combination with release of the iPad 3 (or iPhone 5), Apple will release a SDK to enable all developers (not just a select few partners) to build voice-interactive applications on the iPhone, iPad, and (maybe) Apple TV. This will create an…

Top 10 Problems With the Facebook iPhone App

Facebook Application

Updated: September 22, 2011

Designer: Facebook Price: Free

iPhone: Yes iPad: Yes iPod: Yes

Category: Social

Just as it announced a rehashing of its main website, Facebook also recently released a much anticipated update of their iPhone app. While Facebook had claimed this was the app update to solve them all, the reviews are in and it looks like Facebook took a step backwards instead of forward. Here are the Top 10 Facebook app complaints:

1. Application freezes up: A iPhone app isn’t any good if it doesn’t work and the latest Facebook update has had many reports on the support page about the application failing to load. Reports on the freezing are sporadic but it can happen anywhere in the app from the loading screen to the chat screen.

2. Failure to update changes: One of the biggest complaints is that actions and changes that are made in the application aren’t being made on the live Facebook site. Things such as changing your status, your location, or even straight up post aren’t making it through to the live website, even though they show up well enough

3. Slow load time: One of the issues I’ve personally come across with the latest Facebook iPhone app update is that the load times for just about anything on the Facebook network are extremely laggy or all together time out. The chat conversations are laggy and sometimes get out of sync which can lead to some really weird conversations.

4. Quick Draining Battery: Now this is personally my number one gripe about the Facebook app, but apparently the chat interface is open continuously in the new application requiring a constant signal to the application thus draining the battery. Most iPhone apps limit connectivity to only when its necessary to reduce battery drain but currently the Facebook app is not. If I have this app open for a long time (which I like to do) my battery last me less than half as long as normal and that bites!

5. Unable to receive notifications: As of the last update I wasn’t able to get access to any of my notifications and they weren’t even displaying even though I could readily access and see them through the computer website. To test this, I sent myself an invite to a game from my girlfriends account a few hours ago and I still have yet to see the notification appear.

6. Can’t access prior update: What’s worse when you have an iPhone app that is ruined by an update? Being unable to go back to the version of the iPhone app that was working before the update was released.

7. Unable to post to “My Wall” – Your wall is your sacred place. It’s the first thing that everybody sees when they’re checking out your Facebook and it displays darn near everything you’ve done. Being unable to post to my wall is what finally broke the camels back and made me decide to stop using the Facebook iPhone app.

8. Glitches when receiving phone calls – This has only happened twice, but it’s terribly annoying. Twice I’ve used the iPhone Facebook app and someone called me. Tried to switch over but the app froze up and I missed my call. It’s never cool to miss a call when the phone is RIGHT IN YOUR HANDS.

9. Updates are slow – The last two updates have taken a long time for me to download. This hasn’t been a problem before.

10. Pictures don’t display – I don’t know about you guys but I’ve had a hard time getting pictures to display properly, especially when going through peoples photo galleries. The pictures either fail to load or load really slow. Again, this hasn’t been a major problem until the last update.

I know this sounds like a gripe fest and I’ll be honest that I might be reaching on one or two of the above points but the problem we have here is another case of over complication. I dropped MySpace for Facebook because Facebook made interacting with my friends easy and it made keeping connected easy. Now, with each update and more features, the app seems to be progressively buggy and complicated. If they don’t stop their current trend, I can see a competitor eating up some of Facebook’s unhappy customers. It happened to MySpace and it can happen to Facebook too.

OtterBox iPhone 5 Review

Do you often drop things? Are you clumsy? Do you find yourself constantly spilling juice and food on yourself? Well, OtterBox might be the perfect case for you. The OtterBox cases have been around for years now and they’re back to protect the beautiful new iPhone 5.

The case includes a removable belt clip, 3-layer protection and a nice screen protector. It feels durable when you pick it up. Keep in mind: it’s big. If you like the thin feel of the iPhone, stay away. However, if you work in construction or another hazardous phone condition, it’s probably a great solution.

Now, lets break it down:

Installation: Installation is simple if you’ve ever used an OtterBox case before. The best way to start is to open up the tab on the upper left corner by the volume control, then pull the bumper off the case with your fingers. Things are easy from then on.
