Starting your own iPhone App Development Business

The Beginnings of a New App Business

I have always dreamed of achieving financial freedom and have invested a great deal of time / money into trading on the share-market, buying real estate investments, get rich quick schemes and the list goes on.

So far these initiatives have provided limited results however developing iPhone Apps was something I hadn’t ever dreamt of doing!

By chance I had the opportunity to catch up with an old friend who was having great success as an App Developer creating apps within a niche market that he was involved in. After showing me that he was making significant profits selling iPhone applications, and I mean significant, I was “hooked”.

After a little encouragement from my friend I decided to take the plunge into App Development and started Sideys Apps!

To get started and to develop my understanding of the App World I read the App Empire EBook and this was a fantastic opening to the endless opportunities to make passive income from starting your own App Business…

Barriers To Entry in the App Development World

Forms and Paperwork

I found that the process in starting out as an App Developer was quite involved after signing up. In Australia there are certain requirements to getting started such as applying for an Australian Business Number (ABN) and also then Registering for GST (Goods and Services Tax).

Waiting for these accreditations to be set up and approved can be an arduous process in itself and several phone calls to the Tax Office to verify your business venture is a legitimate one.

Starting your own App Business needs to be treated as a real business because without putting in 100% you will fail.

Tools of the Trade

Having the correct equipment can also be a significant barrier to entry as it is costly to own a MacBook Computer, iPad and iPhone. Without these to use as tools in creating, testing and assessing your applications you simply cannot begin.

You will find that the costs associated with App development can become quite expensive therefore many people are scared off by this or never progress past their first app if it fails.

Developers and App Programming

Next comes the hard part!

Finding a developer to turn your idea into reality is an extremely hard task when you’re starting out.

  • Is the developer capable of creating the features your app requires?
  • Will they do it within your budget?
  • Are they reliable and will they provide what you have asked of them?

There are so many different questions that need to be considered whilst trying to find a developer.

I didn’t have the available funds to have the iChangeFaces app made locally as the costs in Australia to develop an app are very high! Outsourcing my job overseas was the key!

I personally knew what I wanted and through the Elance.com website, I posted a job looking to hire a developer. I found one. He was based out of Romania of all places, yet communicated with perfect English via effective emails in which I could have the app created.

Continual ongoing support is required from a developer in order to maintain your app as new iOS systems are developed, app updates are needed or fixing bugs that may arise from users operating your app. Hence a reliable developer can become quite important.

If you decide to purchase an existing iOS application from a developer, buyers beware!

Generally they are selling them in order to offload a non-performing asset or be wary of developers and include a refund clause in your purchase contract so that if the app is rejected by the app store, you can get your money back.

Once you have found a developer you like and trust, reward / praise them in some way so that they enjoy working with you and in future you may find that they go above and beyond when helping you out on your next app.

Simply getting used to using the Xcode program used to develop apps is quite difficult. Without the help of YouTube, Google and developers forums I would have found it very hard to learn the basics of this program and getting an app ready for submission to the App Store.

The internet is a fantastic source of information however unless you find the exact answer for your question, you can waste many hours searching and then end up pulling your hair out!

The Evolution of the IPhone

Apple has sold over 4 million units of the latest version of its mobile phone, the iPhone 4S. The device is now the most ubiquitous handset in the world. These are indeed prosperous times for the iPhone, but you will recall that things did not begin so auspiciously.

Apple has sold over 4 million units of the latest version of its mobile phone, the iPhone 4S. The device is now the most ubiquitous handset in the world. These are indeed prosperous times for the iPhone, but you will recall that things did not begin so auspiciously.

When Apple announced the first iPhone in 2007, the device was met with mixed reviews. On the one hand, the phone contained remarkable new technology, like it”s multi-touch screen, a feature that enabled navigation through multiple finger gestures; the clean and smooth user interface; and integration of desktop quality web-browser. On the other hand, the device was only available on AT&T”s 2G Edge network, a disappointment considering many phones on the market were already taking advantage of next generation 3G speeds. In addition, applications available on the iPhone were sparse and included only the bare essentials such as web browser, calendar, clock, ect. Many rudimentary features, such as the ability to copy and paste text and record video were left out, however. Worst of all, the device carried a daunting price tag of $499 and $599 for 4GB and 8GB versions, respectively. Underwhelming sales figures prompted Apple to slash the price of the phone by $100 within months of launch.

These issues were addressed in future updates, starting with the iPhone 3G. As its name alludes to, this iPhone ran on AT&T”s faster 3G network. In addition, Apple introduced the App store, a digital market place where software developers could sell original applications. This opened up an entirely new attraction on the iPhone. No longer was it simply chic, it was also incredibly functional. An array of activities, such game play, reading e-books and navigating through GPS, were now available through the iPhone. Simple features missing from the original iPhone, like copy and paste and multimedia messaging were also added. The design of the iPhone 3G also received an overhaul from its predecessor, replacing the chrome back with plastic, improving signal quality. The third iPhone, dubbed the 3GS retained this design while being upgraded with a faster processor and video recording capability.

Today, the iPhone 4 and 4S have evolved to even greater lengths. The design now features an all-glass casing with a metal band around the circumference of the phone that serves as the antenna. The 4S boasts the fast A5 dual-core processor and a voice command feature called Siri.

Apple iPhone 5 is knocking on the doors, its design was finalized, has made its production pace, and the flood of leaked parts has also found its way into tech blogs set. There is much to be expected, show that the iPhone 5 would supply more and more parts and information leaked out before the iPhone sees the light of day 5 in September / October. Recently, an iPhone supplier Mall TVC posted a few new alleged iPhone 5 parts including the battery, Back Camera Lens and headphone / earphone jack flex cable has audio.

This new leaked parts are used quite differently than the parts currently in the iPhone 4. Here”s a side-by-side comparison of these parts with pictures of the iPhone”s 4-piece, courtesy of aussie battery.

5-4-iPhone iPhone Battery

There seems no significant change in 5 iPhone battery, which almost simultaneously in size and shape of the cell phone battery that we have in existing iPhone 4 device. Both iPhone and iPhone 5 4 batteries also have the same performance specifications as 5 iPhone battery is labeled as 3.7 V and 5.3Whr while the iPhone 4 Battery 3.7 V and shows 5.25Whr.

The new section also packs an appropriate part number of 616-0580, compared to the iPhone # and # part numbers, while the port is turned on iPhone 5 battery, unlike the iPhone part 4.

Now back to the iPhone 5 camera module, that are tightly integrated flash similar to the iPhone 4 design exhibits. It negates all previous rumors that describe camera iPhone 5 may be separated from the camera module, or propose a dual LED flash lights for iPhone 5th It is expected that the iPhone is 5 would equipped with an 8-megapixel camera built in, from the 5-megapixel camera into the existing iPhone 4 updates.

iPhone iPhone 5-4-camera

As with all these early iPhone 5 parts, the supplier site has no details on the specifications. In fact, we doubt that they once the specifications at this stage. Some dimensions do seem to be given for the parts, but in comparison to the known parts (like the iPhone 4 Battery) on the same grounds, it seemed a large discrepancy compared with other published specifications, we would be found on the Internet. So we can not too much faith in the aforementioned dimensions.

Finally comes the new part of the leaked iPhone 5 – An audio jack flex cable. Currently we are not able to say much about it, although it is quite different than the cable we were in current GSM and CDMA using parts looks.

Cam Wow for IPhone: Hours of Photo Fun

One of the most popular things about today’s Smartphone’s is the wide variety of applications that can be downloaded and used for a wide variety of things. Games are popular, of course, but there are a great many applications that are useful, interesting and downright fun. One such application provided me with hours of fun from the moment I downloaded it to my iPhone. Cam Wow, by Jolly Dream Studios, is a free photo booth application that lets you capture yourself and your friends in ways you’d never imagined you could.

Navigating and using Cam Wow is easy. Just click the “FX” button on the bottom right-hand corner and you’re given a total of 24 different types of effects that you can use when taking pictures of yourself, your friends, your pets, or just about anything you’d want to take a photo of. Just choose the effect you want to try and start shooting. It’s that simple!

Here are some of the digital photo booth effects that come with Cam Wow:

Colors

For some really cool shots taken in different color scales, Cam Wow has several to choose from. The app has pink-scale, green-scale, blue-scale, grayscale, and even a combination of red and blue scale effects. Black and white and sepia are other standard color options available with the app.

For more interesting color effects, the application has several more to choose from. X-ray can be a little freaky, but cool at the same time, and the black and white cartoon effect kind of reminds me of the video for a-ha’s “Take on Me” video from the 1980’s. There’s another black and white effect that kind of makes you look like you’re made up of snowy pixels from an old black and white television set. Very cool!

Other Photo Effects

The other options available for taking pictures in Cam Wow are the really fun ones. There are effects that twist, turn and otherwise distort all different parts of the subject depending upon how you hold the camera, kind of like in a House of Mirrors at the carnival. Make yourself look like a member of the Lollipop Guild from the Wizard of Oz or Mr. Spock’s Klingon long-lost cousin from Star Trek. The possibilities are endless.

Last but not least is what I like to call the “Andy Warhol Effect.” Of course I’m talking about the four-in-one type of picture that the artist made famous in his day. Recreate a Warhol masterpiece with this one, a la Marilyn Monroe or a Campbell’s soup can. Again there’s no limit to what you can do.

So if you like to take photos and play with visual effects, then Cam Wow is definitely for you. The only catch is you’ve got to have an iPhone. To download the app, simply go to the App Store on your iPhone and download Cam Wow for free. Of course there’s a paid version with even more options, but the free one is simply good for hours of fun. For technical specifics and more information on Cam Wow, just click here. iPhone 5 users are Europe’s biggest data consumers

Mobile data analysis firm Arieso examined more than 1 million smartphone users on European 3G networks over a 24 hour period to gauge data demand.

It found that newer smartphones, tablets and devices that fall in between in terms of screen size and capability, dubbed “phablets”, were creating ever growing demands for data, putting increasing pressure on 3G mobile networks.

“One iPhone 5 user is effectively worth about 4 iPhone 3G users,” report author Michael Flanagan said in an interview.

The study also found iPhone 5 users demanded 50 percent more data than iPhone 4S users, who were the most demanding a year ago, he said.

The amount of data uploaded to services like social networking sites had also increased, he said, and it was now one sixth of the amount of data downloaded against one seventh a year ago.

Samsung’s Galaxy SIII smartphone, edged ahead of the iPhone 5 in terms of the average amount of data generated and uploaded by the device, for example in posting a photograph to Facebook.

Google may be paying Apple $1 billion a year to be the default search engine in iOS

Google (GOOG) could be paying Apple (AAPL) as much as $1 billion a year for the right to the be default search engine on iPhones, iPads and the iPod touch. Scott Devitt of Morgan Stanley praised Google in a recent note to investors, Business Insider reported. The analyst said, “the next Google is Google,” noting that the company is continuing to prove itself in an ever-changing market. He believes that Google’s search business has more room to grow in expanding markets and subsidiaries such as YouTube could generate as much as $20 billion by 2020.

[More from BGR: Four Android smartphones lead the iPhone 5 in customer satisfaction ratings]

Devitt estimated within the note that Google could be paying Apple up to $1 billion just to be the default search engine in iOS, and that figure is expected to increase over the next few years. Earlier reports claimed the two companies were involved in a revenue sharing deal, however the analyst doesn’t think this is the case because it would be too messy.

[More from BGR: Next-gen Xbox may feature advanced multitasking and require Kinect to function]

He thinks Apple would instead be far more likely to do a fee per device agreement for the benefits of upfront payments and easier accounting. The analyst believes this unlikely partnership has helped Google control an estimated 95% of the mobile search market.

As Jay Yarow of Business Insider wrote, “when you consider that Apple and Android are swallowing the mobile market, paying ~$1 billion a year for a monopoly on the most lucrative online business in the world is a no-brainer.”
