Travelocity Launches New App for iPhone: Hotel Deals by lastminute.com

SOUTHLAKE, Texas–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Travelocity’s newest iPhone® app for U.S-based travelers – Hotel Deals by lastminute.com – has launched and is available for free download on the Apple App StoreSM.

“Hotel Deals by lastminute.com is perfect for the leisure traveler looking for a deal for an impromptu weekend getaway or the road warrior who gets stuck late at a meeting and misses their flight”

The latest mobile travel app by Travelocity draws upon the heritage of lastminute.com, Travelocity’s sister company in Europe and concentrates on travelers who are truly booking at the last minute. It lets them book tonight, tomorrow or the next day for up to seven nights, giving travelers instant access to three-to-five star hotels with discounts up to 55%.

“Hotel Deals by lastminute.com is perfect for the leisure traveler looking for a deal for an impromptu weekend getaway or the road warrior who gets stuck late at a meeting and misses their flight,” said Jason Fulmines, director of mobile at Travelocity.

Hotel Deals by lastminute.com is the first travel app to implement an innovative credit card scan tool that uses the iPhone’s camera to capture and auto-fill the billing information fields to save on-the-go travelers the hassle of tapping in numbers on a small screen.

The app offersdiscounted rooms from both major chain hotels and independent properties that are designated three star and higher, and features Travelocity Top Secret Hotel deals, which offer consumers even lower rates by not naming the exact hotel until the booking is complete.

Additional features of the Hotel Deals by lastminute.com app include:

  • Single page checkout with auto-fill that inserts and remembers the traveler’s name, address, and email info
  • An interactive map to see top-rated hotels located nearby and/or local points of interest
  • Filters that allow travelers to search for the best hotel based on price, distance, customer ratings or hotel star rating
  • The ability to view upcoming and previously booked trips in the “MyTrips” tab

5 Great QR Code Campaigns

QR Codes are quickly gaining mainstream acceptance. This simple technology allows users to easily move from an offline (newspaper, magazine, hoarding, brochure) environment to an online one, by just using their smartphone cameras.

Apart from the ability to move users online, QR Codes also open up fascinating new opportunities for content creators to engage their audience. Following up on my earlier post on the topic, I have listed some of the most innovative uses of this technology. The campaigns below are my personal favorites. In fact, it was the Tesco South Korea example that really got me thinking about the potential of this technology.

1) Tesco in South Korea: The retailing giant actually created a virtual store in subway stations so people could actually do their shopping while waiting for their ride home.

2) Mytoys.de: German online toystore used the codes (and Lego) to promote Lego!

3) Chili’s: The QR codes where part of a charity effort and appeared on marketing materials on tables.

4) Starbucks and Lady Gaga: Am not sure who benefitted the most from this campaign. My bet would be this campaign did as much to popularize QR Codes as the two brands using it.

5) JC Penny: Personalized messages using QR Codes. Love the idea.

As the Penny campaign says, "maybe its magic." Yes it is and there’s more of that to come, especially when content creators incorporate mobility, time and analytics into their QR code campaigns.

Finally this is a very short list to do let me know other interesting uses of the code that you are aware of.

Battery Running Low? Get System Manager For IPhone and Control Your Power Usage

There’s no big secret that Apple’s designers based the look and feel of the operating system for iPhones on their already popular Dashboard for Mac. And, if you’ve ever used your Dashboard, then you know that the system monitor widget is arguably the Dashboard’s “killer app.”

People love to monitor and manage the inner workings of their machine — whether that is a Mac laptop or their shiny new smart phone.

What is surprising is that it has taken so long for a developer to port that monitoring functionality and make it available for iPhone and iPod Touch users. Nevertheless, at long last, the wait is finally over. System Manager for iPhone is here! And this app aims to answer every question you have about what is going on behind the polished shell of your iDevice.

The look of this app is polished enough that it could easily be mistaken for a native application. The developer has cleverly mimicked the “rubberized” appearance of the Mac Dashboard as well as the original dock for the iPhone. All appearances aside, System Manager is very good at what it sets out to do: tell you everything about your phone, from memory usage, to processes, battery life, and miscellaneous system details.

These various categories are easily accessible within the app through tabs at the bottom of the screen, and each tab comes with a handy visualization of the data that System Manager has collected. For example, the memory use of the device is displayed as a pie chart, so you can easily see what’s slowing down your performance, or how much disk space you have left. Below the visualization, the app displays an easy-to-read chart of relevant information.

Even with hours and hours of playtime, one of the most common problems users complain about is battery life. You can use this app to track your iPhone’s power usage as well. In the battery tab, you will find a list of how many minutes of usage you can expect to get if you were to use your phone in various ways, from standby mode to 3D gaming, and everything in between.

System Manager strives to be more than a passive data-collection app, however. If you opt to use System Manager while charging your phone, it will attempt to optimize battery life by keeping track of when the battery was last allowed to drain completely. If local notifications are enabled, System Manager will remind the user to run a full battery cycle monthly– a proven technique for getting the most life out of the battery. System Manager can also be used to launch applications that are running in the background.

Unfortunately, this app is missing one key bit of functionality: the ability to force-quit applications that are running in the background and gobbling up the device’s limited memory. This isn’t the fault of the developer, however, as Apple denies App Store passage to any app with a task-killer function. It’s a bit of a shame, and we can only hope that Apple will change this policy.

All in all, System Manager is stable and highly functional. It is essential for anyone who already uses their smartphone as if it were a second computer.

iPhone Apps Development – New Way of Business Aspirations

New boundaries & their achievement are the key drivers of Apple phenomenal rise since 5 years now. Its inception has changed the way people take their business domain. Micro-computing, coupled with telecommunication saw their beginning with iPhone & today, worldwide momentum had befriended business to the T. So, it is natural for small businesses to follow suit, on the way to have iPhone app for business

To generate more patrons, business aspirations have come ahead of facebook Page, Twitter Handle etc & a customized application for your own business unfold the way to reach global customers. So, relation with what you offering is the core USP of the launch of your mobile expansion.

For this, personally I feel to have a barometer to calculate an application’s potential for monetary accomplishment. Suggestions are always welcome, for the time being

It is always good to compare few things in business ways. A classic example used to be those days when we could see someone with pamphlets & informing about their offerings. Likewise, we also saw the time when door-to-door marketing saw its rise with leaflets & small booklets describing features of particular product & services. Now get back to this time when the whole world thrives on smartphones. We need to inform our potential interested buyers to inform what we have for them. The prime benefit of developing an app for your aspirations coerces people to download & use it. It adds virility as well.

Now, let’s discuss some features which might help your updates. Actually, the owner of the firm knows best what kind of application would enhance the brand of his endeavors.

News – For example, it might be fruitful to opt for news application which might be adept to let people know what is happening in your company – products wise as well as service change, & what not.

Search Feature – Besides, to keep the hassle of brochures & their corresponding confusion, an application to search your services & products just by typing some search string might help the visitors in getting what they are trying for.

iPhone Apps for Newspapers

Times have been tough recently for the Newspaper business. Remember when major cities had at least two competing newspapers, and each newspaper company usually had both morning and evening editions? If you’re under age 40, you probably don’t. The newspaper business has been in decline for some decades, but internet technology has recently speeded it up.

First you have countless free online news websites siphoning off newspapers’ former paying subscribers, Craig’s List has ruined classified advertising revenue for newspapers, and printing and other production costs continue to rise. Long time columnists are quitting to publish their own content on the internet. This gloom and doom can also be applied to the magazine business. Is there any good news out there for the publishing world?

iPhone apps may help newspapers to rise again or at least maintain themselves while they reinvent and regroup. Newspaper iPhone apps can bring a leading edge technology to an industry many consider tired and old fashioned, maybe even comatose. What an iPhone app can do is bring the newspaper and its content one step closer to the customers, who are able to personalize and share their favorite news content and read it anywhere they are, even offline. iPhone apps can help newspapers add a social networking feature to their publications and give an advertising sales force something new to talk about with potential advertisers instead of dwelling on declining circulation numbers.

The next iPhone operating system upgrade later in 2009 will add a subscription capability, allowing newspapers, magazines and other publishing formats to take paid subscriptions for their content directly through the iPhone app. It would be advantageous for newspapers and other publications to start planning their own custom iPhone apps now to take advantage of this exciting new technology. Six months from now you’ll be glad you got started now.

Major newspapers with their own iPhone apps inclued The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, USA Today, and The Telegraph (UK). The Associated Press just released its own iPhone app newsreader, but we don’t consider them an actual newspaper. A group of three major newspapers in Japan has even combined forces to release a combined iPhone application that features all three papers in the same app!

However, you don’t need to be a major newspaper or a newspaper with deep pockets to have your own custom iPhone application. And not every newspaper needs the level of features and functions that the New York Times and USA Today apps incorporate. If your publication’s online version already has RSS Feeds for different categories, you’re halfway there – your custom iPhone app will use your existing RSS Feeds to power the stories in the app. And if your paper’s website doesn’t already have RSS Feeds they’re pretty easy to set up. Now if you don’t yet have a website for your paper, you’re probably in big trouble!

If you need an iPhone app for your publication, try searching online for “custom iPhone apps for newspapers” and you’ll find a developer that can get you started.

TSheets Private Sector Time Tracking App Outperforms DOL iPhone App

BOISE, Idaho–(BUSINESS WIRE)–In May 2011, The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) released an iPhone application for employees to independently track time. The first-ever app designed for a smartphone by the government agency, the DOL time sheet app allows employees to track hours worked in contrast to their employers time tracking system, a critical and often contested element in wage and labor disputes.

“Unfortunately, while designed with good intentions to protect employees, the DOL time sheet app will create substantial problems for employers”

“Unfortunately, while designed with good intentions to protect employees, the DOL time sheet app will create substantial problems for employers,” says Matt Rissell, president and CEO of TSheets, based in Boise, Idaho.

TSheets, a private sector time tracking technology firm with over 40,000 users worldwide, now offers a DOL-compliant smartphone application that tracks, manages and reports time to protect both employees and employers. It also improves on the capabilities of the DOL technology to better address the nationwide nuances of labor law.

“This new DOL time sheet iPhone application is a game changer for employers and employees everywhere,” says Rissell in a recent blog post. “However, even with the best intentions, we think this new app is going to create an onslaught of problems and a landslide of litigation. With two separate time tracking systems in play, how often will employee hours realistically align? And why spend taxpayer money to develop an app that’s going to create a wedge between employees and employers?”

Well before the DOL release, TSheets had already developed a mobile time tracking application designed for iPhone and Android smartphones as well as other platforms. In contrast to the DOL technology, the TSheets time sheet offers an undeletable log that tracks and accounts for not only elapsed time, but who checked in when and even where with GPS time stamping.

“No longer can an employer dishonestly change someone’s timesheet without it being accounted for. And no longer can an employer be vulnerable to an illegitimate accusation by an employee for changing their timesheet,” notes Rissell. “With technology like this, it’s all tracked. Period.”

Instead of allowing the new DOL timesheet to create a dissonance in the work place, employers should install a flexible, user-friendly system that protects both sides of the paycheck, with existing DOL-compliant solutions like TSheets.

TSheets is a fast-paced time tracking technology firm based in Boise, Idaho with over 40,000 worldwide users. The company designs time keeping solutions that empower business leaders with more accurate, mobile and flexible ways to track, manage and report employee time.

12 weirdest smartphone apps

Apple are always telling us that there’s an app for everything, and do you know what, they’re not lying.

So when you hear the line “There’s an app for that” you’re probably thinking of the thousands of applications that help you do things like book restaurants, find out train times and even translate foreign languages. But alongside the thousands of useful programmes, our smartphones also play host to a rogue’s gallery of weird, wonderful and downright bizarre apps that have to be seen to be believed.

So from feline friendly photo editors to death calculators here’s our pick of the 12 weirdest apps around.

Death App

iPhone / Android – Free

The Death App tracks recent car accidents and murders in your area, plotting the deaths on a macabre map offering an ideal tool to help you avoid those life-threatening hotspots. Or, if you’re a goth, a nifty way to find new places to hang out.

‘I Am Rich’

iPhone – £599.99 (no longer available)

Originally released in 2008 this app cost a whopping $999.99.  So what did you get for all that money? Absolutely nothing. Yes, the idea was that people would buy it just to show off how rich they were; which amazingly eight people did before Apple eventually pulled it.

My Vibe

iPhone – Free

MyVibe is pedalled by an online sex shop who had the bright idea to take advantage of the iPhone’s vibrating feature and put it to an altogether different use entirely – nudge, nudge, wink, wink.

Hold On!

iPhone – Free

Possibly one of the most pointless apps available (and that’s saying something), the aim of the game in Hold On! is to hold down a virtual button for as long as possible. That’s it.

Blower

iPhone- £0.69

After being blown into a billion times by over enthusiastic gamers, the iPhone’s getting its own back with this madcap app which uses your speaker to blow out air. Designed for those of us who are simply too lazy to exhale, Blower isn’t strong enough to help you clear your driveway in Autumn, but it’s certainly got the lungs to help you blow out the candles on your average birthday cake.

Easy Metal Detector Lite

Android- Free (iPhone equivalents available)

Need to find a way to pay for your expensive smartphone? Then look no further, as this handy app will have you digging up buried treasure in no time. Easy Metal Detector is weird because it actually works. Apparently all smartphones have something called a magnetometer to enable their compass function, which this app (and it’s iPhone equivalents) hijack to turn your phone into a rudimentary metal detector.

Annoy A Teen!

iPhone / Android – £0.69

Next time you come across a particularly unsavoury bunch of hooded youths simply whip out your smartphone and select this app. Annoy A Teen! plays high frequency sounds that only young people and presumably dogs can hear. It’s more likely to annoy them rather than leave them convulsing on the floor clutching their ears though, which, come to think of it, might not be the best of ideas.

iNap@work

iPhone – £0.69

This app claims to generate a string of random office sounds such as mouse clicks, keyboard taps, paper rustling and the like, in order to provide you with cover should you ever decide to take a power nap at your desk. It’s a great idea until you realise it does nothing to disguise the fact that you’re slumped over your keyboard when you should be finishing the Frankfurt report.

CatPaint

iPhone – £0.69

CatPaint claims to be the premier, and presumably only, cat-based image editor for the iPhone. The app, which counts Taylor Swift and Katy Perry amongst its fans, enables you to effortlessly add any of its sixteen adorable kitties to your favourite photos. And you thought Photoshop was cool?

iPoo

iPhone – £0.69

iPoo is a social network that brings together toilet dwellers from around the world. The app lets you chat to your fellow defecators from the comfort of your own toilet and even earn badges for your exploits. It also lets you browse real time stats and even track the location of fellow pooers via GPS. Just be thankful Apple insisted the developer disable the photo function before they made it to the App Store.

HangTime

iPhone – £0.69

HangTime encourages smartphone owners to lob their valuable pieces of portable hardware as high into the air as they possibly can. But don’t worry it’s not reckless, it’s just so that you can use your phone’s accelerometer to measure how long you’re expensive piece of kit stayed airborne for and then compare your personal bests with other idiots/users.

iLickit

iPhone – £0.69 / £1.49

A game that asks you to mop up grandma’s cooking using your tongue, that’s pretty weird right?  Seriously, they want you to physically lick your phone and the developers even claim to have developed a special ‘tongue optimised engine’ to enable you to do so. Just make sure you clean it first.

iPhone Application Builder- How to become an iPhone App Builder

You may have heard about i Shoot, an i Phone app and its builder who was working with Sun Microsystems and built iShoot in his spare time. This iPhone app builder has quit his day job and become a full time developer. This is one example but there are many instances available that the developer of different domain becomes the iPhone app builder. If you want to become an iPhone app builder here are some tips for you.

Buy a Mac

iPhone is an Apple product and it needs development environment in Mac. iShoot was developed on old MacBook  with 1GB of memory, knackered wi-fi and an Ethernet port. Mac Minis are powerful, easy on desk space. They are also easy to move round, developers can take them home at weekend!

Get the SDK

Apple provides free SDK (software development kit) on their developer site. You can download it and use for development. This kit has everything you need to get going, including development environment called X-code, the iPhone simulator for testing, performance analyzers, interface builders and the full documentation reference library.

Learn Objective C

This is primary programming language for iPhone development. It is nothing but extension of C to include object-oriented principle. It has scripting elements to it, so is easier to pick up than some languages and anyone with programming experience should be able to transfer their skills. Apple developer forum is the best place to ask your doubts and grow further.

Start Writing

Start writing something. Forget about the language you are going to learn. This is the most practical way of learning something quickly. This is more or less a standard procedure in the development community when you are exposed to a new platform. Something should appear on the screen. The SDK comes with example projects and you can learn it through reverse engineering. You can build it by your own way adding extra features.

Be Official Developer

To become an official iPhone app builder you are to sign up as an official developer at Apple store. There is a standard procedure and you can follow up easily. Sign up also helps you to test your code on actual iPhone rather than onscreen emulator. Once you are on the developer program you will receive a certificate which allows you to pair up with iPhone device.

Submit

Once you finish the development you submit your app to the Apple store. It is a simple and straightforward procedure. Upload the zip and select the icon and write the description and wait for the approval for a week.

This way you will become an iPhone app builder and earn lot of money with it.
